Bootloader mode needs some kind of hp driver and it'll fail if you try to change the language
by changing the rom with a rom that doesn't match your device's SKU ID.

Try to look after 514, 510, 513 and some other variants of the 510 Series, the last digit is a regional product difference code, so you can checkup at different numbers in order to find a related language pack, bootloader can be found by checking up exe files and commands from rom update wizard (hpruu) it dissasemblies some dll and instructions into some temporary folders

be careful this hp devices are not as friendly to flash comparing them with any HTC Platform SP

I have the same problem. I want to change it to dutch to. But maybe I have solution too... I downloaded a program called bootloader. I downloaded the correct firmware from the HP website. (.nbf file). So i have the necessary stuff to change the ROM. There are only a few things that I still ask myself.

1.) Can I make a backup from the ROM so I can return to the old state if things go wrong?
2.) Is there someone that allready did this with the program Bootloader?
3.) More in general--> Has someone ever did this before?

Tested last night. This doesnt work for me as I tried to cut the very first 3435-bytes from the original ROM and paste into the ROM which I wanted to flash. Some new 34xx numbers might help.

Normally, you can't flash a ROM that doesn´t match your SKU ID.

That means: When you have an iPAQ 514 with English, Spanish and Portuguese,
you can't flash a ROM with Dutch.

But with that tutorial of mine.. YOU CAN DO IT! :D

its for the Hermes but can be used to dump other roms as well.

The new version contains new voip files. Maybe these will work for other phones as well and fix the problem with internet calling everyone is experiencing.

The link to the 'howto dump a hermes' is not intended for the install of a rom to the phone, but to copy files from the phone to the pc. The other link i supplied is an update to WM6 os on a HP514, but i don't know to what version. Any way it's probably newer than the version most people have on their phone

I don't know if the regular voip files (rtcdll.dll etc) are different. According to the website of HP there are improvements in the new rom concerning voip quality. If you read the voip thread in the Development and Hacking section (good luck:)) you will read that there are more files involved with voip

a list of files involved:

voipphonecanvas.dll
dnsapi.dll

But also
rtcmedia.dll (supposedly supplies video voip)
gsm610.dll (or other gsm codec)
ossvcs.dll (for switching sound between phone and rear speaker)

Hp state on their website that they improved the sound quality, but not how they did it. It could also be a registry hack. Thats why i want to examine the entire rom. Unfortunately i didn't find a way to unpack the file that's on the website because its encrypted:mad:

The attributes of the files I mentioned are from an upgraded HP 514 (v2.05). It's much more stable for WiFi connections, but I have problems with SIP sound quality, seeHP support forum (http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1215116)

I've just bought an unlocked HP iPaq 514 in Spain.
The network signal is good and I can send and receive sms.
But when I try to make a call, it just says Ended call and finish the dialing.
When someone tries to call me, it rings and when I answer, it doesn't do anything, and for the other party it just keeps calling.
Any ideas?

Tried that but got the "Could not update itsutils.dll...." error even though the key mentioned there was already set at 1. The referred post is about WM5, Perhalps different for WM6?
I also get an error on the HP 514: "starting this program requires a component from an unknown ........"

Probably the hp514 is application locked. Some manufacturers and/or vendors apply local policies to prevent owners from installing third party software or editing the phone setup.

These policies can be deactivated by editing the registry.

Check this wiki article on information about how to avoid that. Basically you have to modify this registry key, and then softreset using power button:

dword: any thing other than 1 disallows unsigned

You can use Total Commander for Windows Smartphone (free) to edit the registry

To change the registry with Total Commander, you have to startup the program and hit the root (\) next to the address bar and then select \\plugins -> registry and navigate to the registry key mentioned above. After setting the value you have to reset the phone (turn it off and on).

The registry key change is nothing permanent, you can change it back to the original value if you like.

If dumping the rom doesn't work check after setting the registry value, check if the registry value sticked. There is a difference in a soft and a hard reset. One reset flushes all changes to disk while the other doesn't. don't know what's the case with a smartphone.

Also make sure you have the latest version of itsutils (http://nah6.com/~itsme/itsutilsbin-20070705.zip)

The registry editors I ran on my ipaq 514 did not change the reg settings. It appears that the default setting of the HP 514 inhibits applications from changing the registry. The following post (Thanks myHTC!) provides a solution:


Windows Mobile powered devices are shipped with default security settings.
The security model enables Mobile Operators to make post-production changes to security settings.
This can place significant restrictions on software which has not been signed and approved.
However you can change the default settings.

Of course the update nbf file is encrypted, but the modules in the wince device is still the same. Otherwise, we couldn't dump it in the first place. I was thinking of using the Universal iPaq ROM loader to upload the already cooked ROM and not the encrypted file. We need an alternate method to flash the device unless someone is kind enough to write an NBF encrypter-decrypter for this device. It's the only tool missing, then we could enjoy cooked ROMs for this device as well. Oh, we need to CID unlock devices as well; so, other users from different places can enjoy this.

I think you missed one important thing. I have FA905AA#UUF device. There is no current ROM update utility for this device. Which means flashing by RUU to trick SKU ID is impossible for me, unless, you guys have a solution for it.

One more thing... there is a slight difference in our memory addressing for the ROM layout after looking at your 514 dump details. Which means if I cook a ROM suitable for pdocwrite, it will not be suitable for 514. I've been trying to research as to how I could bypass and manage to update my ipaq 512 1.08 with a 512 2.05 ROM, so, if I cook, it will be for both devices 512 and 514.

Well, it is easier to dump the 2.05 ROM if it is already inside the device. Also flashing a full ROM will format the device appropriately.

EDIT: maybe because I'm using vista that mtty has problem connecting even with the downgraded usb drivers.

I also have bootloader 0.76. Where you buy your 512. Some of 512 in Singapore, they preloaded it with Chinese Language support and typing.

I dont want to hijack this thread, but it seems that this is just one huge iPaq 514 thread. So, does anyone have one of these on O2 PAYG with a working GPRS internet connection?

I got the phone brand new and used the HP data connect utility on the phone and let it configure itself, which it did do, and I can receive MMS fine. Everywhere I've looked all the settings are the same as the ones I've got, but when I use IE it connects (as an "E" or a "G" appears by the signal strength), but after about 5-10 seconds of saying "opening" it disconnects saying that it's lost it's connection.

Now, I have set it up to pick up my O2 email, and it does that with no problems, so the GPRS settings must be correct or I'd get a similar error when trying to download email to the phone.

So, if someone on O2 has a working set up on an iPaq 514 (other places I've looked have O2 settings, but on different smart phones), could you please post that set-up here so I can check it again (for about the 50th time!). Other than that, does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

thank god, i found another big(ger) HP iPaq 514 thread. Information for that mobile is really hard to gather. (mostly russian, or german with no aspects of rom flashing/dumping)

Good to hear that people are still interested in the iPaq HP 514. I got a HP 514 as a company phone. Our old company phone was a HTC StarTrek - which is twice times better than the HP. (StarTrek runs stable on 286 Mhz & WM 6.1 Professional - can't understand the change - i still puzzle about this decision)

Now i am at the point, where i hate the HP 514 - because nothing is working. WiFi is still buggy, and Battery Life isn't really good - even with the Battery Drain Fix. Some time ago, i was responsible for the rollout of aprrox. 30 pieces of this smartphone at our company. It was horrible - i got the half of them back, because after a few days, they had the problem, that they didn't recieve any GSM signal anymore. I had to reset the bullheaded HP 514 phones, to get them working again. (Settings, SMS, everything lost - huge amount of time spent into troubleshooting these phones... :mad:) - i need not to mention that they are appalling slow for 200 Mhz.

So i'm still hoping for anyone releasing a new ROM for the HP 514. Preferably with all the bugs fixed and WM6.1. ;-) - because HP is incapable of making a functional and fixed ROM, i'm sure. (i suppose they do not know the hardware-platform - HP wanted to start making money at the smartphone market, but probably had no capacities to develop an own hardware-platform...so they are contingent on CMCS...weak

You need to application unlock your phone before you make the changes to the registry. What bugs me is the settings application not working. Maybe you need to reflash a ROM to your ipaq.

I application unlocked it, that doesnt make a differance.
I tried installing the rom update from the HP website, but i think its the same that was allready installed 2.05.. and also that doenst make a differance.
I think its just a bug in the rom... i send the phone back to the shop where i bought it.
They are going to try and fix it, but im hoping i can get a other phone cause i think it sucks... :rolleyes:

Bootloader mode needs some kind of hp driver and it'll fail if you try to change the language
by changing the rom with a rom that doesn't match your device's SKU ID.

Therez WM 6.1 development project on russian forum www*ipaq514*ru. Silix (the one who disassembled ROM 4 motorola MPx220) has almost decoded update for our device! He needs just test it, but he has no device.

Our forum administration decided to donate some funds for this. It will be great fee for Silix's job, will not it? Everyone with data connection problems on iPAQ 514, this is a radio unit software problem.
I managed to have it working, after contacting HP support, by loading a radio patch to 1.090.
As this is a test patch i was told by HP not to release it.
They are going to release a new rom soon, that fixes this.

Hello I have been using the ipaq 514 but i never got voip to work well. I have a sip account with my ISP and the phone hooked up to my router functions well. I was hoping to be able to use my sip account on the ipaq also. The problem is that when i make calls the audio i receive is very distorted and inaudible. The ppl i call say they receive perfect audio though. I have seen threads on the HP forums about this issue but no solution. Would this radio patch fix my problem and where do i get hold of it? Do other ppl suffer from this flaw? Thanks in advance.
