Hi All,

This is the mplayer (famous linux media player ) port for Windows smartphone . I have tested this with Application unlocked SP5m ( WM6) . It should run on all WM5+ smartphones as well Pocket PCs .

Installation guide..

Unzip all the contents to memory card and run mplayer.exe , All files should be in same folder.

Advantage of mplayer
-- Full support of streaming
-- supports all real media formats including streaming.
-- Supports RV40, RV30, R20 , sipro , cook and atrac codecs.
-- Supports MP4 streaming over RTSP.
-- All flavors of Flash video are supported.
-- Uses coremp4 for MP4 decoding.

TODO:

-- Need to imporve GUI ( current version is just for preview)
-- WMA decoder is not supported ( Need to add windows DMO driver, any help will be great)
-- Need to fix some crashes .

Overclock your tornado to 240 MHz , this will give best result.

Download armv4 version of Mplayer this should run on all devices (http://rapidshare.com/files/70769805/mplayer-armv4.zip.html)
Menneisyys' Mirror (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/mplayer-armv4.zip)

Download armv5te version of Mplayer this should run on all omap850+ devices (http://rapidshare.com/files/70770709/mplayer-armv5.zip.html)
Menneisyys' Mirror (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/mplayer-armv5.zip)

Download iwmmxt version of Mplayer this should run on all devices which has iwmmxt optimization, not tested thought, pls share your results (http://rapidshare.com/files/70859496/mplayer-iwmmxt.zip.html)
Menneisyys' Mirror (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/mplayer-iwmmxt.zip)

I will post the device list with compatibility soon till then you have to hit and try different version on your device.

Regarding high CPU usage on streaming and missing live555 support , this is something I have to debug , will update you soon.

Finally , If you feel mplayer port is useful please donate :) , It will help me to make Mplayer more useful and powerful. Hi amitv_17! Great work.
I am russian. When I try to open file with russian name, your plays said that can't find this file, and show me on screen abracadabra, not russian name me the file I try.
Your player don't understand russian font symbols.

Hi,

Absolutely amazing! :)
Are the codecs all written in software? Or do you use hardware acceleration?

I'm running it on both my Kaiser and Vox. I tried a few flash video files and a mpeg4 file. They all worked well. Unfortunately I got an error when streaming mpeg4 via rtsp. The errors are:
"Server returned 400: Bad request" and then "no stream found to handle url rtsp://192.168.1.26:7070"

With VLC player I can play this stream without problems. Any solution?

And before I forget, let me know your palpay address then I will send you a donation :)

Cheers

Wowz! I'll frontpage this!

BTW, what makes the port Tornado-only? The entire WinMo coummity would certainly welcome the port!

Hi JockyW

I am currently too busy. I will make the website up by next week. Does port 7070 is correct for your rtsp link , try with 80 as mplayer doesnt try port 80 by default.

It uses realplayer binary codecs optimized for ARM , for some rm files you need to overclock your Phone.

Great, you support RealOne? Do you also plan to support HTTP to stream RealOne, as opposed to RTSP? RealOne's official player doesn't support HTTP tunneling, only RTSP, which means it's useless on many NAT networks.

(Sorry for not trying it myself - I'm very busy with two other articles right now.)

The address and port I use is 100% correct (rtsp://192.168.1.26:7070).
It works in VLC and Quicktime. I'm streaming mpeg4 video via RTSP.

Any ideas about releasing source code ??

It should run on all windows smartphones as well Pocket PCs with QVGA display (240x320)

well, it can't initialize a video for me... Himalaya. There's a lack of a whole central part (video area) - I can see an underlying application. The voice is working, though...

It should be as fast as TCPMP , this could be a video display issue , anyway can you send me or tell me which file you are trying to run, This will help me to debug this kind of problem.

I think it would be helpful to have a set of test clips encoded with different codecs and parameters (resolution, bitrate, profiles, etc.).

A fixed reference helps to test players much more objective.

Just tried it on my Herme - white screen then it exited. tried mp3, divx, rm, RMVB... all with the same results.

1. What format are they in? Doesn't CorePlay play them?

2. don't forget the current MPlayer build is VERY bad, performance-wise. Only use it when you simply have no other chance (for example, RealOne HTTP streaming).

I am streaming season 2 episode 8 of heroes to my Ameo!!! Through in2streams.com!!!

WOW!

I didnt think that this would happen so soon. First we get Utube support and now :) Proper streaming :)

It freezes and stutters and the screen layout sucks, the controls are wrong but I really dont care. This is a BIG development. If I get a decent version which allows full screen, orientation changes etc and proper VGA support I cannot express how much of a change this will have on how I view entertainment media......

I mean......with HSDPA (which for some reason after this weekend seems to have changed in Central london and sped up like a GaZilion times.....) and with www.in2streams.com I have Every south park episode Simposons.....well every show you would ever want....all coming to my Lurverly ameo.

Even more reasons why I dont have to take a laptop away with me on holiday or when working...

Thanks to the Author :)

I just loaded Mplayer (mplayer-armv4) up on my Fujitsu-Siemens N560 (624MHz & VGA) and was able to play a .rmvb file (THANK YOU!). While the audio seemed to play fine, the video seemed to be in slow motion or at least much lagging behind the audio. I have A LOT of videos in .rmvb format and this program may just be what I am looking for.

amitv_17, when you finally update the program to get my N560 playing .rmvb files up to speed, I will immediately donate £10 towards your project! Keep up the fantastic job! I'm sure there are many others (at least couple thousands, if not in the order of ten thousands, other people) who have been eagerly waiting for a .rmvb player on the Windows Mobile platform. You're doing something profound for this world!

EDIT: just found out what iwMMXt stands for and realised the processor in the N560 (Intel PXA270) should in theory support it. But when loading the same .rmvb file with mplayer-iwmmxt, I get a popup saying "Unknown option on the command line: -sws"

Just figured I'd ask, since I'm surprised nobody else has: are there any plans for hardware acceleration? I have an HTC Athena (which has the ATI W2284), and if it could use the hardware acceleration available in TCPMP (one of the two methods which was oddly dropped in CorePlayer - the one that actually worked on mine!), that would be awesome. I'd also imagine that there are a lot of people who would love to see support for the Intel 2700G, too. :)

If need be, I may be able to get my hands on some of the information needed for supporting the NVIDIA GeForce Go chips, but I'd really love to see support for the ATI chips (especially since they seem to be more common). Any other help I can offer, just let me know, since I think (like others) that this is an awesome development!

I need more information on this , We need to think how acceleration can help.
First quick question is does ATI W2284 supports direct yv12 rendering. than we can skip slow yv12 to rgb conversion.

Honestly? I don't know what the exact capabilities of the ATI Imageon are. What I do know is that TCPMP has (had?) two ATI Imageon video drivers listed: "ATI IMAGEON Decoder" and "ATI IMAGEON". The former didn't work properly with the ATI Imageon W2284. The latter did (not sure why).

Compared to the Raw FrameBuffer and GDI video drivers, it had significantly better speed and softer edges. I would expect that all of the code is in the TCPMP 0.72RC1 source (available from, for example, the TCPMP backup download site (http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/)). If need be, I could probably help crawl through the code to figure out what's going on.

From a quick overview, it looks like the ATI Imageon code is in the ati3200 directory, while the Intel 2700G code is (predictably) in the intel2700g directory. It does seem to support YUV420 (where, according to Wikipedia, YUV420p is the same as YV12 except that U and V are reversed, but the same algorithms can be used), or at the very least, the driver appears to know how to handle YUV420.

Same Problem With This!!!! Wait Next Update.:p :p

Excuse my ignorance but...

What is the advantage to this over TCPMP?

Unrelated: if you get streaming audio to display each song title properly rather than just station name... you've got me won over.

Thanks

The advantage that I am completely sold for is that Mplayer is the closest thing (at the moment) there is to play .rmvb (a compression that is higher and more efficient than DivX or Xvid) on Windows Mobile. Not even the original RealPlayer for Windows Mobile could play .rmvb files.

Hi All,
This is the mplayer (famous linux media player ) port for Windows smartphone . I have tested this with Application unlocked SP5m ( WM6) . It should run on all WM5+ smartphones as well Pocket PCs .
.....

Hello Amit and all!

Congratulations with this great port! We just tested this application on few WM5 and 6 devices and it worked pretty well.

We compiled a CAB-installation package for the users convenient and added it into our Smartphone Freeware Directory (http://www.smartphone-freeware.org). Our short review and the CAB itself can be obtained here (http://www.smartphone-freeware.org/download/mplayer-for-windows-mobile).

We have few suggestions for the next releases:

Start to tag releases with version numbers, for the sake of order and compatibility
Make background of the screen black, when a movie is being played
Center the movie on the screen if it doesn't fit the whole screen

Both issues can be clearly observed on the screenshot which we made:
http://www.smartphone-freeware.org/system/files/screenshots/MPlayer_Windows_Mobile.jpg

We wish you all the best and keep us informed about your new releases!

Best regards
SFD Team

Mirror link for mplayer-armv4 (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/mplayer-armv4.zip)

Download armv5te version of Mplayer this should run on all omap850+ devices (http://rapidshare.com/files/70770709/mplayer-armv5.zip.html)

Download iwmmxt version of Mplayer this should run on all devices which has iwmmxt optimization, not tested thought, pls share your results (http://rapidshare.com/files/70859496/mplayer-iwmmxt.zip.html)

Has the person that released this also released the sourcecode for other people to work on? If he doesn't release the sourcecode with the program (that he modified to run on Windows Mobile) does that not violate the GPL license MPlayer is released under?

Or is my understanding of the GPL lacking...?

YorikR32
4th January 2008, 03:30 AM
He only needs to release the source for which the GPL is covered, not his own source. As an example he must make available the source for the mplayer components, not necessarily the new components or anything that he has written, unless he covers his code under the GPL.

GPL is there for us to use and at the moment I am seeing a lot of people pointing the GPL bone at coders, when in fact they are compliant. Not sayign this is the case here, but it is something to be mindful of as these people are effectively volunteers and the GPL is pretty much the only thing protecting them.

I noticed that the OP was updated 27/12, not bad if you ask me, also the builds that I get from various websites seem to work okay.. With VLC (an old nightly build from a long time ago that I have), TCPMP, mplayer and a few other apps, I notice there isn't much I can't play. That I have tried anyway.

spyda256
5th January 2008, 07:06 AM
Thank you, I was a little confused since I didn't see the source released (by the way I love he did the work at all, I'm very thankful of that indeed).

I do hope he releases what he intends to release the source though, we could get a lot of support behind this I believe. I'm an amatuer coder at best, but I tell you I'd LOVE to support the development of software like this, software I believe in and have a good vested interest in seeing grow.

That said, I do apologize if I came across as mean-spirited at all.

Nothing but cheers to the developer, and I do hope you release the code for some more folks to help :)

I'll keep coming back to this forum, I can't wait for what comes next.

I noticed that the OP was updated 27/12, not bad if you ask me

It was me who edited the OP, not the original author - I've just added my direct download mirrors, hosted on my own database server so that noone needs to download from Rapidshare.

hello,

should it support Real Media Stream with RTSP:// - or only with HTTP:// ?
i didn't got it to work. the brief releasenotes doesn't make it clear to me:

-- supports all real media formats including streaming.
-- Supports MP4 streaming over RTSP.

i'd like to use ZDF.de's mediathek: http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/mobile

Thank you!

He only needs to release the source for which the GPL is covered, not his own source.

Unless I am much mistaken, this is not 100% correct (unless I misunderstood what you're saying). The GPL requires any modification done to GPL-code to also be released under the GPL license. As such, if he modified the code at all, it needs to be released.

I am interested in it because I wish to (attempt to) back-port it to WM2003SE so I can run it on my Axim x50.

Read my reviews and radio streaming guides - for RTSP, use the traditional RealOne player. It's only with HTTP that your only choice is Mplayer - assuming you have a VERY fast (at least a 624 MHz Xscale) device.

Working fine on my S620 to play Realaudio files.

Only issue I have is that I have to go through the open menu of the mplayer application to open a file and can't manage to make it play on file association or "open with" from explorer.

Any clue anyone ?

That's my understanding too.

There really wouldn't be much point of you only had to release the code that's already been released.

That's why big companies sometimes run into trouble with this, they don't realize they have to release the source of their work too.

Sorta working on my xv6800(AKA Titan)

It will buffer an nsv Vp6 stream but the video is laggy, the mp3 audio is steady but quickly out paces the video slide show.

This is the closest I've come to playing a nsv video stream. I really hope this port is not dead and continues to develop.

How do I properly setup an ARM toolchain for this? Have you actually done it and cross-compiled mplayer? Is the available source code ready for cross-compilation?

I have Ubuntu distro on my pc with cegcc, binutils, etc...what else do I need?

It would be nice to have some instructions on "How to cross-compile mplayer" since there are many people interested on this.

Where is the source code?

I see metion of a svn repository but no links.

Using the source from the mplayer homepage/original source is not going to cut it. mplayer was released under GPL and the source code for this project MUST be released.

Hy,

the source code is the original mplayer source code. You have to check out it from http://www.mplayerhq.hu and built it by yourself.

But you can watch to my Site http://www.torsten-klinger.de . There i have done a little tutorial to build ffmpeg for mobile. Thats your entry point i think. Or you can use ffplay for WinCE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3819157#post3819157 .

I watch iPlayer almost every other day on my Touch Pro 2.
However, I have noticed a few problems.

Video stops playing in 5 minute segments. Buffer stays at 0%
Audio level is extremely low. Forced to use headset.

I noticed mPlayer automatically asked for an update recently, all it did was change the app icon. Would have hoped these problems would have been fixed.

Anyone else experiencing these problems?

* I'm using the default streaming application that comes on TP2.

this article made me interested in the possibilities...., ill give a whack at compiling it and running it in the Virtual Mobile 6.1...

i dont have a PDA/Smartphone that has WM5/6, but for the community and future use (when i eventually decide to part with my own ARM-based device) i plan on getting one.

what you need to focus on is...

FFDSHOW/FFMPEG implementation

MPLAYER W/debug,shared,dynamic-plugins,runtime-cpudetection(for different phone support),SMB, External FFMPEG(this will allow Dynamic Codecs).

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have managed to do a succesfull complete streaming from dreambox directly to my phone with the Mplayer-armv4.
This Player don't work on my Glofiish X900 (win 6.5).
But works on my Glofiish X500 (win 6.1 Pro).
When you load the player go to
View->Open URL
and write http://<dreambox ip>:31344
i have mine without password
You have to wait 15-30sec for video to appear.
for low resolutions channels like 352x288 the video is perfect
for high resolution channels like 544x576 video loses frames and audio has sync problems (probably i need a more powerfull mobile like HD2)

I have DM500s with Pli Jade3 image.
I don't know if this help , but with Jade1 you could watch the stream only with VLC 0.8.6i (from a PC)
With Jade2 and Jade3 you can watch the stream with VLC 0.9.x
I don't know why , maybe they use different codec.

If you use the Gemini Project image the stream is very buggy and sometimes is not working at all.

Try to use mplayer-armv5 with the HD2 and tell us the result.

What image do you have on DM7000s ?
