Sure they are possible..I've cooked up 6 or so that I mess with.

Why don't you give cooking up your own a try? It's not difficult and all the tools you could possibly need are here on xda-dev. Hint: use the Hermes tools.

I'm currently intrigued with using the base ROM/ROW and using the CapPackage.PXP in the extROM to perform whatever tweaks software installs you desire. Much less intrusive than modifying the FLASH.
