I can't comment on the quality of the Softbank because I've never seen one, but I'd advise going for the HTC or Dopod. The reason for this is that the Softbanks seem more difficult to SIM or CID unlock and more difficult to upgrade the radio.
Have a browse through these forums and you'll find loads of threads from people who can't upgrade their softbank.

No problem with either white or black, as long as you get a reliable person selling to you an unlock version. Check around to source for your phone! I have been changing my rom since I got it from orginal softbank to WM5 Chinese to WM6 rom. No problem encountered so far....

I use Softbank almost 1 year, and I never got any problem at all including for unlocking. I do it myself with many guides from this forum (thx to xda-developers and all the member)
About the unlocking SIM and CID, since Olipro release HardSPL V7 and pof's Free HTC Hermes SIM & CID Unlocker *New* version v3a, I think the "painful" unlocking CID and SIM for Softbank became a history :D. Try to search Hermes guide to unlocking for that.
Please feel free to unlock w/o worry anymore :D

I just bought a softbank here in China too. I am just wondering how much you paid in RMB? I am an american so prices tend to be a bit high for me...
By they way, have had no problems, changed the OS and upgraded the radio.
