I just purchased myself a used orbit off of Ebay. Its in cracking condition but the problem I have is my sim card just doesn't work.

I have a o2 pay and go sim card and when i put it in and start the phone it comes up saying 'invalid or missing sim'.

The sim is correctly inserted and I have tried 2 other working o2 sims, same problem.

Do i need to unlock it (http://www.imei-check.co.uk/c3unlock.php), buy a pay monthly sim card or what?

Also, I wanna upgrade to wm6 using the o2 webpage update link, if unlocking is what i need to do. Does it matter if I unlock before upgrading or vice~versa.

Hopefully ill get this decent piece of kit up and running soon :)

Are you sure you've inserted the SIM card the correct way around?

Inserted with gold contacts aligned with the reading pins on the Orbit

I am positive it is the right way round, I have tried 3 cards, all working in other devices, two of which are brand new cards.

Ive also tried placing a bit of paper behind the sim card cradle to make sure it has a tight contact.

I also tried flashing to wm6 and all it said was no sim inserted, so ive flashed back to wm5 and im back to the same old invalid sim message.

Maybe that's why the vendor sold it?

I'd considering reporting it as a dodgy auction personally

So you recon I shouldn't bother wasting £20 using imei-check to try and unlock then. Just try and get my money back/report a dodgy auction.

you don't need to pay IMEI check either, search these forums and there's a free, working alternative one of the mods came up with...

Is that the one? Seems to be all I can find. Plus having a look through there doesnt seem to be anyone saying it worked on there artemis, just a lot of people asking will it and getting no reply.

If you could point me in the direction if thats not it cos I really think ive gone blind..... :)

Hi,
I don't know if this helps, but I had the same problem about two months ago.

Did everything you did, about once in every 8 reboots, it would work for a couple of minutes, then that message again.
I sent it off for repair, they changed the Sim reader, and an internal wiring loom connector thingy.
Now it works!

Regards,
Paul

I would check the phone isn't blocked by the network

http://www.checkmend.org/

allows you to check the IMEI

i too also had an xda orbit with this problem, had to send it back under warranty, took them 37 days, but complained like fook and managed to get £50 off them plus a brand new o2 stellar (result)

but yeah nothing worked to repair it.

I ended up going through paypal and getting my money back eventually, the guy gave me every penny back. It was a bust phone it turns out.
