View Full Version : EXCHANGE MAIL SERVICES - incl. push / aliases etc

hey guys,

I'm now offering exchange mailboxes to users (subscription based service). right now i see two, one by austindkelly in the wizard forum (he's disappeared for over a month and looks like he doens't offer his service any more) and one by denial in the kaiser section ($5/month). I thought I'd offer up a similar service starting with the hermes group (cheaper of course) with a few extra tidbits of joy...

- supports iphone exchange services, saves a heck of money over apple's mobileme service!
- outlook web access (with the advanced interface)
- 1gb quota
- both SSL as well as standard port options
- *IMAP access* - you don't even need outlook, syncs flawlessly with your phone.
- *MAPI* outlook access - hook up your outlook on your PC to sync with my service which in turn syncs with your phone. no plugging in ever needed!
- alias included (get your own email)
- changing your password through outlook web access (one-way non-reversible encryption).

I figured it's a bit of an overkill having my own exchange server that's serving a single account (i.e. mine). so why not open it up!

Price is $10 for 3 months, $19 for 6 months.

Please PM me if you're interested... Already have a number of beta testers who I've received only positive responses from so far. I'll probably set up your account within 12 hours (probably less).

And yes, will give you unused credit money back etc etc if you're unsatisfied for whatever reason. I'm really not in this for the money, it's more to utilize something I spent hours building up, plus to cover the costs of my internet / server hardware.

And, as usual, if you need any files hosted for xda-developers just let me know, i'm already hosting over 40 ROM images and serving 5-6gb/day in ROMs from the wiki!

cheers!

free accounts:

will provide 10 rotating free accounts at any given time for test purposes, will base it off of usage. so if you use the free account, i'll keep it up indefinitely, if not then account will be removed after 14 days and given to the next person in line.

Free accounts do not have MAPI access, have 50mb storage, have no aliases either.

Depending on utilization I may increase this 10 free account limit.

exchange 2003.

much easier for both of us if you just forward your personal .com address e-mail to the e-mail address my server assigns you. if you have an alias, your replies will appear from your personal .com email, not from my server :)

for those who've PMed overnight (i'm in london time, 8:20am here now) i'll set up your accounts within the next few hours.

Hi !

I can understand. No problem.

I'm 35 myself but my last daughter is only 2 weeks old ... that's why I'm still alive and kicking at 2.30 am (Paris Time).

Cheers for the account. I'm giving it a try and will report soon.

Hi everyone,

I have to acknowledge that the service provided by Chamelion is working flawlessly. I've been using it for a week now and did not encounter any trouble except encoding issues but apparently not from his side. Flexmail is getting crazy with encoding, but poutlook is working great.

For sure, give it a try (if not more) !

thanks Chamelion for the good experience.

Note also that Chamelion is very accessible and quick to respond.

few people are asking about synching from multiple sources...

from my understanding i can only give you one alias for your accounts, which means you can't select your "from." however you're free to forward as many accounts as you wish to the account i create for you, but you can only send from one "alias."

another multi-synching thing people are asking is whether you can sync calendar with your desktop and email with my service. sure!! its best that way in fact - that's what i do. i have my outlook on my desktop which has my calendar, contacts, and only sync my email via push on exchange to my server... you can even take this a step further and set up IMAP access so what you see in your email client is the same as what you'll see in your pocket outlook... if you delete from your desktop, whoosh it disappears from your PDA too :)

Hey Chamilion -

As always, thanks for the cool service. It has been working well. I have been waiting to show my wife all it can do until I can show her on Outlook on her PC how to create appointments, etc. Any ETA on figuring out the issue with connecting to the server via Outlook?

sadly not having much luck with MAPI... i've enabled MAPI over HTTP so it will only use 80/443 ports, those ports are working fine, mapi is enabled for all users, but for some reason i get authentication errors when trying to make it work.

you guys should give it a go too, maybe its my machine? in outlook you'll have to go to the exchange server settings and under "connection" ensure that "connect to my exchange mailbox using HTTP" is selected, putting in my full URL in the options dialog under this, using basic authentication...

maybe one of you will be lucky :)

Hey Chamilion -

We still can't connect via Outlook, and that may be a show-stopper after this first 3 months. I think you and I are about 8 hours apart (I am in California, GMT -8), but I'd be happy to get online with you and try to sort out what might be the issue. I do have Outlook set for basic authentication, but of course there are a lot of other factors (SSL, NTLM/Kerberos, domain sensitivity in wonderful MS products, etc.) that make trial and error slow-going - especially if it could be something server-based.

Let me know if I can assist in any way.

Thanks!

absolutely NEED this - some real time testers for the MAPI system. just to confirm - you tried using the tunnel over HTTP option in exchange settings right? i really need to narrow down the problem and right now there's just too many things that could be causing it!

i'm going to be in ireland for the next 3 days (back sunday) so can't do anything until then, but when i do get back lets have a chat and work out some real-time testing schedule....

thanks for the offer to help :)

No sweat. Yes, I do have the "connect using HTTP option on", and the info in the form field for the "proxy" is "azim2.is-a-geek.com" (no quotes). Mutually authenticate is unchecked, both fast and slow headers options are checked. Basic authentication is selected. Only other option, and I am not sure if it comes into play, is under the Security tab - and I have Kerberos/NTLM selected (because neither other setting seemed to work, and this is "auto", I believe).

Have fun in Ireland - if you are in Dublin say hello to the Temple Bar area for me. I need another Guiness ornament to match the one I already have.

could i get 1-2 of the existing customers (or 1-2 new members?) to test out the MAPI access with outlook? I got it working for my account but the one "outside" tester i have hasn't had any luck in setting it up. It'd be a great feature to have!

Thanks for setting up my account so quickly, however i am having some problems, if i send an email from a seperate account to the one you set me up it gets bounced back with errors, (something to do with the domain) also, if i try to send an email from the account you have set up for me i get a sync error even though it connects, syncs and stays connected its only when i try to send an email it gives me a sync error. Any ideas? Thanks

Has anyone running vista/outlook 07 gotten MAPI to work? I have been playing with settings and cached mode or no cache it still gives me the error "The admin has blocked this version yada yada yada". Did anyone doing anything special to get it to work?

carphead

I managed to get it to work on one machine but not on the other. If your running vista you need to make sure that the certificate is imported into the Trusted Root Certification Authorities and not the Personal section. You can tell if it's worked because if you pull up the secure OWA site in IE7 it will display a warning about it not being secure if it's worked you won't see that warning.

As a side note and might be useful to some people I got it the service to work 100% using Emoze on the Symbian (N95) platform. I now have full syncing to both my Tytn II and my N95. I was less concerned about email and more concerned about Contacts and Calendars.

Now I've just got to work out why Outlook works on only one of my laptops.

I got the certificate imported correctly awhile ago, I didn't realize vista didn't put them in the root folder. And I am pretty sure it's logging in correctly, it just claims the admin has blocked this version. Thanks for the tip, did you do anything special with login authentication? :)

hey guys,

i've received some requests to install blackberry enterprise server express on top of my exchange services so blackberry users can benefit too. I've already obtained the license for the software, but the client access licenses are $99 each for a perpetual license. Bearing this in mind - would anyone be interested in this sort of service? It's quite a procedure to install it from the looks of it so it'd be nice if I got some sort of feedback to gauge interest before diving in!!

Quick update regarding update in the server!

I know I've had some VERY avoidable downtimes this past few months. Because this is running on a laptop it has been unplugged from the power / ethernet while its been moved.

however good news! I've just purchased a replacement - a nice server :)

Specs - dual core AMD 5600+ with 2 gb RAM, 820gb storage (for those attachments ;) ).

i'll do the switchover soon as i get the machine, should hopefully take 10-15 minutes as i just need to image the drive across.

once i get the machine i'll push up the trial accounts to 15 or 20 so if you're interested i'll post here when the migration is done and you can drop me a note :)

cheers!

I just noticed thanks to one of the users' error message that the partition holding some of the mail had filled up. just spanned out the volume another 10gb (keeping partitions small to keep them high performing) which should keep it purring for some time to come, and installed an alert to tell me if i'm running low again!

I just wanted to let everyone know how great his service is, and his support is top notch. We had an issue with a specific ISP and he sent an email, and all is resolved, and is well worth the small charge.
