"Communication error" when flashing Schap's ROM

I'm dying to try the Schap's 4.01 ROM on my Vario II, but each time I go to flash it, I get a communication error, right when it starts to transfer data. I've gone through the recovery steps, made sure it's synched with Activesync, etc. and let the software detect the bootloader (1.09, I think) but still can't get past the setup.

Is there some trick to this that I don't know about or another software program that works better?

Either use SSPL (not autodetect) or better yet, get HardSPL isntalled on it and then do it from the SDCard. Quicker and more reliable :)
