Appears to work fine and fast. But! Alass... after a short time it freezes and then there is nothing else to do than to reinstall the rom. A hard reset doesn't even help here. Tried it three times, and ik happened three times.
Any suggestions?
In the meantime I put my wm5 rom back on my N311...

I've been waiting for this rom for so long.

Thx, I'll try it.

Running fine, no problem syncing with vista. And still no freeze.
Unfortunately it's a english rom, ayone knows how to change the input (azerty) and menu language (french)
I did something like that with my qtek 8310 when i installed wm6 on it, i'll check for some extra language cabs.

I've been using the ROM since a couple days and there's no freeze yet!
I have the same problem as Tazouk: I tried to change the regional settings to "Italian (Italy)" but the only thing that gets a translation is the date!
Info or hints anyone? :)

Hey Vince...

It's just a workaround, but y installing realvga and language files for this software, you can have your PDA, with your native language.
you can find a post about it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327830 (here).

But seems not to have italian language pack :(.
There was a requests for it, maybe you'll find.

I reply to me: With the above procedure, I've successful installed WM6 on my Acer n310b in seven minutes! :) ... it's all right 100%! No freezing, more fast than WM5.1 and more... "green"... :)

After a week of WM6, I have some questions:

1) to all who have "freeze" problems: can you describe what happens when it freezes? Yesterday I had wifi on and several applications running, and suddendly the device just froze. I tried a soft reset, but it didn't work, so I thought that my device froze just like said in the previous posts. But then, I tried an hard reset, and it worked good. Anyone got similar experiences?

2) I can't find Messenger anymore! It's hidden somewhere in the menus? I have to download a cab? Can anyone please help me on that? :)

3) Anyone happens to have a good black theme for WM6? [edit: I found some good themes here (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ATOM_THEMES) on xda!)

Ciao, ti rispondo in inglese in modo che la risposta sia utile per tutti.

To solve the wifi problem after the ROM upgrade:
- run "File Explorer"
- go to "Windows" directory on device
- locate the file "trayicon.exe"
- tap on "trayicon.exe" and select "copy"
- go to "Windows\StartUp" on device
- tap and select "Paste Shortcut"
- soft reset your device

Now, you should have the WiFi icon in the system tray, near the "bluetooth" and "rotate screen" icons. Use your WiFi as usual! :)
This workaround survives your soft resets, but if you hard reset your device you have to do it again!

For my experience, i didn't see any differences regarding wi-fi. It was just like the latest acer official ROM, and far less efficient than my "out of the box" rom :(
Not a big issue for me, as I don't really use wi-fi, with my pda.

I just tried this upgrade and like fore some other posters it hangs for me after a while. I need to restore a WWE WM5 rom but there are no roms on the Acer ftp any longer. Does anyone know an alternative source where I can get an os image?

Hy, I've updated my n311 to wm6 and now bluetooth don't work!

I've been experiencing the same problemen, however a soft reset does not fix the problem, the device won't reboot but keeps on displaying the white device image. A fresh romload is the only way to resolve this image.

I'm currently reverting to rom wm5.

After a couple weeks of WM6, I'm switching back to the last official WM5 ROM. I found the WM6 pretty stable and fast, but as previously reported it suddenly freeze without any reason. I hope to see a new WM6 ROM soon! :)

I've solved the bluetooth's problem installing the last official rom (1.00.24), before I had the 1.00.15, and then reinstalling the wm6 rom.
I'm waiting for a new release (perhaps with italian language...)

I am having trouble installing this rom upgrade. I did the hard reset, the boot loader loaded, still holding reset. I get the downloading from SD card. but instead of the bars in the bottom I get the bootloader loading again. My card's formated FAT16 and rom is now updated to .24. Still can't get pass downloading from SD. Any suggestion?

If you're upgrading from WM5 1.00.16 to WM5 1.00.24 using the official Acer ROMs, you have to repeat the flash procedure twice: one is for the upgrade of the bootloader, and the second one will upgrade the ROM.

The correct procedure is the following:
- perform an hard reset (hold today button + mail button + reset)
- release the buttons
- immediately hold the power button you have on the left side of the device
- hold the power button until the 5 seconds countdown goes to zero.

Be sure to format your SD card as FAT and then copy ONLY the ROM files on the SD, respecting the folder structure.

Once you're sure that both your bootloader and rom are upgraded to 1.00.24, you can try to flash your device with the WM6 cooked ROM.

I hope this helps!

Two weeks after my upgrade to WM6, I got my first freeze thingy today :(
After a some atempts to hard reset the device, I succesfully got the n311 resetted, and WM6 is running, but I'll have to re-install enverything now.

Creator of the rom forgot to put the wifi shortcut in the windows startup folder, create one yourself and put it in there, your wifi will start normally next time you do a soft reset. When you hard reset it, simply repeat he procedure above to get wifi working again.

but the freeze thingy makes me crazy.

I edited my registry using: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager
PNPUnloadDelay : 4096 but my pda still freezes. It didn't help much. In less than 2 minutes after wifi turns on my n311 will freeze. With about 50% battery wifi almost freezes in seconds. Any suggestions?

I tried this ROM yesterday and, so far, it's pretty good! Some freezing installing live messenger but I had a backup so, even with a hard reboot, it went OK. Thanks to the author for this amazing work. And happy new year to u all.

but i wonder if I can modify it.
I search for the whole forum, I can extract the rom data.
After I repack the rom data, put it in the SD card.
When computing checksum , it always got error.
May I ask you what tools you use ?

Hi Football.
Im new in here, but 'd like already to test your ROM with my N311.

So, as i'm lookin for some nice stuffs, i plan to install many new proggies from here and there.

My question is:
Do you think everything can still work with:

TouchNav or FTouchFlo v.1.4.1
o2 mini new bluetooth stack
SDHC card patch WM5 and WM6
if those progs are compatible with N311 Acer of course (but have still many pages to read before knowing that fact!)

Actually, my N311 is becomin boring to me and i'd like to try some new stuffs and effects, like an I-Phone style or something funny/handy. So if you have any idea...

not a good idea to change this value without changing the other I/O value.

in fact, 1500 (rom default) for both is the most stable for me, changing either one will within minutes freezes my n311.

i believe it is better to wait for football's next release, which may happen any day now.

There's a german language pack, but you've go to use it with RealVga software, so first instal realVga, then langpack, and choose your language in realVga options. That's what I did with french langpack, everything is running fine, except that i can't startup notes :(

Thanks for this WM6 its the best that my ACER n321 has ever worked!, the ony problem was that the WIFi would not function, which I have sorted out now.

To fix the WIFI
Browse your wm6 windows directory and find the file TrayIcon.exe, right click on it and create a shortcut. Now move the shortcut into the startup folder.....and thats it:)

I installed WM6, it is running fine, however mPhone doesn't show me the bluetooth option anymore, why?

I installed ROM 24 and it is the same. If I can not get mPhone up and running with ROM24 I have to go back to 16, where can I get it? I found one by www.acer.co.tw but it is chinese. Can I convert it or where can I download an english version of ROM16?

Hi Juerg, mphone is a quite old software, I used it with a my old ppc2002 toshiba e350 and a samsung a300, was fun.
But 4 years had past, can't you find others softwares to suit you needs ??

WM6 rom for acer n311 !! Now that's nice :)

It's my first post on the forum but I seen there are WM6 unofficial rom for some HP and Dell device. Acer Pda don't seem that popular in general (a part of it I guess being they're not sold in the US) so I didn't expect much... really nice to seem someone working on it :)
I hope the freeze problem will be resolved in a new version !

Might be a little off topic but how stable is/was your acer n310/111 with the official rom... I never considered mine to be stable. Don't know how much is soft/hardware related but the device not turning off properly and draining the battery, device that won't turn on (have to pull the battery out), and some WM5 crash too.
The worst is that the device performed an hard reset (yes hard reset!) by itself twice... basically the device crash, have to remove the battery and when it start again it's hard resetting...
Still I use the device with dictionary software and hacked Japanese input nearly everyday (and flashcard program, some email checking...) so it's a useful tool for me but it's really a nightmare from time to time.

the_marshal, there are many topics about N311 stability. Seems this PDA isn't so stable for many users. I use to have same problems as you have.
Then i send it back to ams Acer. They changed motherboard, battery connectors and BT. Now it runs pretty well indeed (thats whta make me hesitate to swap to wm6!)

Thanks to football for his oustanding work.
My report after testing his latest release is as follows:
- WIFI and Bluetooth work, I had no problems in browsing the net with Opera and in syncing my n311 with my pc via bluetooth.
- No freezing anymore.
- Lower memory usage than WM5
- Slight improvement in performance

Problems that are still unresolved:
- Minor annoyances with localization (I'm Italian and word suggestion uses an english dictionary)
- The alarm clock doesn't play any sound when it goes off ... it almost made me arrive late at work this morning ... never use beta sw for real life matters! :o

My PPC is an Acer n311, rom v1.00.24, bootloader v1.24, firmvare v2.6

I just flash my WM5rom to WM6 latest update from Football last night.
Still now , no annoying problem and WiFi+Bluetooth work fine.
And so easy to restore all data and programs from previous WM5 .
By using resco-backup and after flash up rom to WM6 , I just restore it , almost programs and setting and also register keys are back in useable.
No need to start to re-install a new programs.
(Except few programs in my device that cannot function such as multipad...)

:pSorry to make confusion. Yes,my backup programs is SPB.
And another bug? report is battery drain a bit faster than before,but not yet confirm my obsevation.

Good release. I like it so far but my wifi still doesn't work, still freezes. I think it is a hardware issue. With this one release I could activesynce with the pc using usb and get online initially. I was very surprised. After installing programs it doesn't work anymore, I can't use activesync to go online. Anyone know what settings to use to get online with activesync via usb?

Great thanks for Footbal's excellent work! The only problem is WIFI & BT seems not so stable than WM5, disconnect frequently although its signal shows fine.

My device's firmware is 2.0 instead of 2.6, I don't know if it is the reason.

I've tried the new rom. It works fine, but when I soft reset the N311, I sometimes have a white screen, to whith the only solution seems a hard reset.
So I went back to WM5. Any advice ?

I have sometime same screen ...even with wm5.. reset doesn't succed every time. The worst is i need to take off the batterie, wait for some minutes then restart. sometime too, even if seems good restarting, the installed programm don't appears...and need to restart it again.

I compare ASUS 620 and ACER ...i never have so much problem with ASUS.

it works fine in my n300. Both WIFI and bluetooth work fine.

One drawback is: I cannot control the power mode in WIFI config. How could I set it to power save mode?

I have tested this latest build for few days. Here are some comments:
1. cannot control the birghtness of LCD, after the PDA is used for certain period. But you can control it after soft rest;
2. the battery life looks shorter than before. It may be the power management problem, especially on the WIFI section (no power save mode);
3. If the site will to many wifi signals or too many service provider (around 10 singals found in thw wifi config), sometimes it cannot access to your pre-defined network.
4. When I tab the Antenna icon to check for the network status under the main screen, the dialog box is always empty.

Again, has someone already tested this rom on a n310? This is the same pda as the n311 except it doesn't have wifi. The official Acer roms are the same for both pda types so I was wondering if that is also the case with this unofficial rom.

Hi Footbal,
I've installed the wm6 second ed on my N311.
I'm sust say its nice ROM, but, if i have no problem with WiFi, my Ericsson K750i freez when i try to connect it to N311 by BT! Never had this problem before.
I can't use Excel nore the notepad. As i need them, i have to go back to WM5...

Does anybody has an idea how to fix the notepad/excel issue? Maybe Regedit could help?...

By the way, the battery is verry strange. Sometimes it keep full tank during 4 days, sometimes it get empty in 2 hours WHEN N311 SWITCHED OFF. Seems it still this ****ActivSync that sucks again. How can i set this mess up?????

Problems with Excel may come from RealVga and not WM6. I experienced that and I had problems desinstalling RealVGA (I had to hard reset).

On my n311 WM6 Excel works (almost) fine and bluetooth to (I connect to my SonyEricsson W810i to share contacts).

PS : I said "almost" because Excel seems unable to remember a row formatted with "custom" (in my case a custom date format). When closing and re-opening the sheet it reverse to another format.

To replace notepad (well, wich notepad ? There is only Pocket Word or Notes as far as I know) you can try FicEdit or Made (both freeware and capable to open text file > 64k).

PS2 : Wifi is Ok to (used with IE and Windows Live)

Many thanks to football for the great work you achieved with this wm6 rom for the acer n311 !
I did the upgrade and this is mostly amazing : wi-fi and bt are good.
- Actually, I'm testing my wifi to access the internet with PIE and also Opera.
- I used BT to link with a GPS antenna which work fine.
I also used RealVGA + french translation and it seems working fine too, except for some apps not supporting the extra resolution. So far, I noticed a minor display bug when going to settings=>power=>advanced: checking the 'adjust 'backlight' settings' : the screen seems to go back to QVGA so a quarter is good but rest of the screen is dark.
At first Win Media didn't seem to start (or too busy?), but last try was good. Even if TCPMP looks better and handles fine heavy videos.
I've been using other apps as GSPlayer for audio files, goes great with VGA. Better than WinVibePro (even if Winamp look was fine) and definitely far from MortPlayer (awful to work and to uninstall).
Last thing is with Windows Live Messenger that is OK.. but hard to uninstall... I guess I'll have to hard reset and backup one apps after another.

Next step will be compatibility with SDHC 4go and Ttn with GPS...

I just re-flash WM6 rev.2 of Football rom and re-install all programs ( the first flash WM6 , I restore all programs back by resco backup(wm5 background) and it work, but later , I found conflicts in some programs )
Now, after re-fresh all OS and Programs, it run smoothly for 2 weeks without any trouble ( WiFi+Blutooth are OK )
Recommend to try this rom with re-install all programs!

I upgraded my n311 with lastest ver.24 rom. It looked verything is ok! However, the pda is not stable and hanged always. Then, I ran bootloader again. However, there was a message "Check sum" error. Hence, I power off the n300 for a while and ran the bootloader later on. This time, the pda were going to "write" operation then it was frozen and no status bar appeared! I felt sorry and powered off my pda. Luckily, I can boot up the pda with ver.24 but it is unstable and always die as before! I want to upgrade the bios again. However, I cannot go to the bootloader sceen even I try to hard reset then press the power botton in many times.

Can anyone tell me if I can flash the bios through USB/CPU software?

I was able to get my 16Gb SDHC card to work on the Acer N311 by using the sdhc.cab and Certs.cab found elsewhere in XDA forums. I'll try to attach these here. I believe the SDHC must be formated prior to use in FAT format.

Hi, is your 16gb sdhc formatted in FAT? Thought SDHC can only be formatted in FAT32? If yes, how and what software did you use to do it?

Anyway, does the n300 correctly display/access your SDHC card as 16GB? Cause most of the users out there who use the SDHC.cab workaround only manage to get n300 (or any other old machines that does not officially support SDHC) to display 4GB or at most 6GB SDHC capacity. I think so far no one has managed to get 8GB cards displayed/accessed correctly, let alone 16GB.

You mind posting some pics? Thanks!

I've attached a picture of my screen showing the SD card info. I'm not an expert. I used this sdhc.cab to get my HTC Trinity to mount SDHC cards in the past and thought I would give it a try. I did format this card FAT32.

I would like to help you. You just need to copy these two files into your SD card(by a sd card reader or sync cable),and then run them in the file manager(first certs.cab ,then sdhc.cab),after a rebooting,just enjoy.

I updated my n311 from offical 1.00.24 firmware,I should say it`s really faster and nicer except some bugs below:
1.although the bluethooth and wifi can work,the power consumption seems huge and sometimes the device suddenly go to a self-power off with no reasons,especially when I am using the connection through the bluetooth dial-up network via my samsung gsm phone,I guess the reason is the buggy power management.

Installed yesterday morning, until today all seems working ok, wifi reception seems improved though I have no hard evidence about that :o The only things to point out are two glitches that were present also in the previous version: the WIFI icon in the top status bar, when clicked puts out an empty baloon, without the usual message and the possibility to change network parameters, and the encryption feature (Settings/Encryption) is "disabled due to the security policy of your corporate network".
Except for these two minor issues everything is going just fine. Great work as ususal for Football :)

I tried on my acer c530 with 8g sdhc, it worked but it sees only 4g:confused: do you know why? and if i have to do som oher procedures?

I had the same problem when I first updated the rom of my 311. I made a full system backup before upgrading and then a full system restore after the upgrade. That messed up the bt drivers and I got a message saying that the drivers were expired. I made a cold restart and reinstalled all my programs from scratch and from then everything was just fine.

My problem seems a bit diferent, when i try to start application of Bt..mssg say not enough memory space free..it really seems when i read all, we have all some problem but really not common..like anuy componants are diferent on any n311. ..not any respond same.. i have sometime too, with temp, a problem with "alignement" on screen, don't U/

I have the same Problem after the update:
i bought 2 brandnew stronger batteries for the n311 to navigate with my motorbike and bluetooth gpsreciver but WM6 has no charge level, and the 2 dont work for me...

is this the known problem with the powermanagement?

Is football maybe aviaiable to solve this problem or is the projekt allready closed??

Such a shame, evething else functions perfectly just this problem, which is for me the biggest!!

Any suggestions how to handle that??

Hey guys!

i have a strange one for you,

my acer n310b has suddenly stopped going to bootloader. it also doesnt really turn on unless i leave out the battery for ten minutes and then when it does come on it stalls after about two minutes.

returning it isnt an option as its out of warrenty.

so, i think it may be bad boot files. i can get into its windows system folder and whatnot, i'm thinking if i got good boot files i could copy and replace the existing ones? no?

can anybody help me get those files? or are they the actual files im looking for. there small boot files in the windows directory. not the ones on the rom.

the original problem was that the machine kept staling after 5 mins. then it just basicaly stopped one day after a bad rom. i was checking to see if it was wm5 causing the issue. for some reason it worked better with a japanese version of windows. but now its crippled.

can anybody help me?
