Hello I have just recently began looking into the idea of a UMPC. I look at the stats on these and they seem decent at least some of them with 1 gig of ram and what not. Can these devices function as a laptop/desktop/pda replacement or have they not made it that far yet?

if you want an UMPC and you want voice, then you may like the HTC X9500 (AKA "Shangri-la")

It has now been confirmed that the shift can make voice calls.
See the thread in the Athena forum for a link to a new video showing the phone pad on the shift.

ive seen a UMPC with the built in GPS and the voice functionality. Im just asking if this can run all the programs that a pc can. Like will i be able to active snyc a PPC. I have stumbled upon an interesting site that has quite a bit of affordable UMPCs...

Shift is a bit pricey on this site.

Hell no!
It's a glorified comms device - that's all.
If you think even a little bit that it can replace even a fraction of your PC usage, you're gonna be very dissapointed and waste a ton of cash.
Office apps are extremely limited, and non-PPC software is simply a no-no.
This was much covered in the days of the Universal, and things have not improved much I'm afraid.
Forget it! Can't be clearer.

if it's running vista non ppc software should be no prob
of cause aero would not work nor any apps which required any kind of directx stuff

do you really think it will make WM6 and phone working ? I'm so sad to see that there is no ability to receive and give calls... and no ability to have WM applications .. it's so sad that the "fake WM6" is just like a wallpaper and a mail reader and nothing more :(

Even if it does not make phone calls out of the box, It will probably be hackable after a few weeks.
If HTC decided to put SnapVue because of marketing reason, there should be a full rom floating somewhere. It's impossible they didn't try one at first stage of development.
If it's for technical reason, then the problem certainly lie in the component sharing between the PPC part and vista. These component are:
Wifi: Must be shared and will probably be a problem to activate on both side. We must find a way to alternate it's switch.
Bluetooth: Same as wifi, but may support dual access as bluetooth can set up multiple connections
GPS: If it's desactivated, there will be the same work as for the artemys hopefully
SnapVue is a WM6 system trying to limit itself. It's not a real operating system build from ground. I'm sure it is crying to go back to normal WM6 state once we add the necessary system files.

wow u guys are living under rocks or something? the athena's snapvue is like the htc home plugin. go into the athena mobile 6 forum. i have it included as a addon for the athena. the athena will have a phone AND gps. yes me and oli have access to the rom. has been mentioned before. no you can't have it. it can go back to normal wm6. disable the plugin in settings and change the tsk. you can also get the menu back and stuff. this can be done by i guess running the cab for athena. the original cab we made during development had the startmenu and all gone. it was built into the dlls to hide softkeys and start menu. if u run the cab i believe all will be back. if u guys want a rom for shift. u know where to find me.

well..... I'm not 100% convinced by everything .. the Shift I have used does not show anything in the SnapVue ... no IE, no explorer, ... nothing to be able to download a cab or to install a cab... maybe synchronizing ? but I think that it can't be synchronized ...... so how? .. I have seen 2 shifts and both were not able of reading SMS and receiving or giving a call.
I will keep tune in this thread since the phone is out this month .. and will see how it works for others... I hope we will be able to put a phone on it and GPS and anything else.... but I think even without that the HTC SHIFT issss the best choice for a small notebook and it is clearly THE BEST CHOICE for an umpc.

idk are u reading what i said correctly? I dont need to put phone or gps on it. IT HAS IT!! like i said if u run the cab it should open the windows up to have a start menu and all that. internet explorer and all that are in the phone. maybe they want u though to only have in wm6 what isnt in vista. if u think about it vista has ie and all that.

i'm not talking about ADDING a phone or a gps ... but about downloading "THE" cab you are talking about... and installing this cab.. I have used the Shift a little .. and it seems that there is no way to access the SnapVue ... just use the snapvue.. but impossible to see something behind it ... no explorer, no I.E. ... and I think that it can't be synchronized with a computer.

 surely it would be possible to hard reset the snapview side and before customizations take place and install sbnap view soft reset then use total commander to get any other cabs from the extended rom that we need ??? (but ive not seen even a sample unit in the flesh i assume this is do_able?)

Sorry to bust your bubble but SnapVue is a part of the ROM... but so long as the device will happily sync away with Activesync, we should be in business.

listen the phone has everything u guys are talking about. ie, file explorer, windows media player, windows live, transcriber and all that. IT IS HIDDEN!!! because vista has all that in it. so why have duplicates? NOW what i was saying is snapvue is a addon like htc home. THATS WHY ITS A CAB IN DUAL!! if u download the cab of snapvue in the dual thread olipro and cmonex modded it so the softkeys and start menu are back. install the same bac in shift and those 2 are back. we then have a normal wm6. its basic on the htc apps side but has all the apps of windows mobile 6. what kind of proof do you need? get me the shift for a few days and not only will i cook it a rom but ill show you what i said.

I just want to test it too ;) .. I have just had the time to use the vista mode... and I have seen a little the SnapVue mode... the guys that were showing the shift weren't that smart...so I hope I can test it on my own.. not just "use" it

Hi guys,
I am following this very closely. Since the Shift has the GPS and WM6 can be, let's say activated to the full, the Shift is the ultimate tool for me.
I want to use it as a navigation system for flying.
Most of the navigation software out there runs on WM5, WM6. Some run on Win XP but most pilots do not trust the stability of Win XP. WM6 works more stable. I am currently using Flymap on a Ipaq HX4700 but the manufacturer says it runs on a Athena.
Now having a 7 inch touchscreen, built-in GPS, screen resolution beyond 640x480, and a processor that is faster than the Athena CPU makes it the
the closest thing to glass cockpit avionics (a little bit of jet feeling in a single piston aircraft).
Now, my question to Pawel62 and all you other guys:
- Do you think that activating full WM6 on the Shift will then allow it to behave like an Athena, or will there be restrictions/collisions due to the concurrent Vista?
- Will the built-in GPS allow dashboard installation of the Shift, in other words is the GPS receiver so sensitive that it does not require visual access to the sky? (Some SIRF-III receiver allow installation under the dashboard instead of windshield installation)
- Can anyone say how bright the display is? Can you use the Shift even under sunshine conditions (transflective display)?
Anyway, I can't wait to get one.
Thanks for your answers

my guess is wm6 will be full almost from the start just menus for it will be hidden. there might be some dlls that need to be modded but that should be it. the athena works on the dash of my car and seat of car. im guessing as long as there is no metal above it ull get a signal ok. i mananged after flashing last night and turning on gps today in my room to get a cold start signal. so its sensitive enough. the athena when brightness is on full is good under sunlight so same should be with shift.

So if the Shift really can make phone calls, maybe it's possible to port the app to other UMPCs (EEE-PC, Advent, ...)?
I'm no expert in UMPCs, but i'd like to know how to add Phone-calls to UMPCs with build in SIM-holder (Datamodem) to have something like Athena with WinXP or Vista.

I think that the UMPCs will be a little to large to function as a phone without the use of bluetooth. I have a sim slot in my XPS but cant figure out how to get it to work for the life of me.

Right but can you imagain how bad your battery life would suck if you had a device like this on all the time as a phone. Ill be happy if they can just be used to replace a laptop.
