View Full Version : A modest proposal (ie. How to respond to new roms)

Could we start a trend of changing the way we respond to new roms?
Nobody wants to read 3 pages of "thnx, I'll try it out." or "thanks! Great work! downloading now!" We're all grateful for new roms, but posting a review is a much better way of saying thanks than wasting space in the thread.
It would be so much better if the only responses were reviews of the rom or bug reports and discussion.
If you agree with me, respond to this thread and keep it at the top. If you don't, let it die and I'll just shut up.
thnx.

Hear, hear...I agree. I flip through two pages of that before I get to the meat of the issues and decide to try or deny. It sometimes makes me wonder why so many noobs ask the same questions in a thread...because the answer was in the bottom of a bunch of I'm downloading now...

I don't mind it, it means my rom is being used :)

I agree, this is a good idea. People can always PM props to the chef. New forum rule? eh, eh?

But you could know your rom is being used, and we could have more useful threads if people posted feedback rather than props.

If that were the case then the thread would die after the issues if any were addressed.

posting thanks isn't what keeps any rom threads alive that I've read. Usually the first few pages are thanks, but the thing that keeps the thread alive is real discussion about the rom.
I can see your point to, though, that it's nice to get an idea of who is using your rom. I'm not sure if there is a way to solve both problems... I wish it was like Digg or slashdot where you can set a threshold for usefulness of the comments you want to read ...

In all seriousness - while I think a message that says "downloading now" isn't terribly useful to anyone, if a thread gets cluttered up with people expressing their gratitude to the ROM chefs that is wonderful! (And I'm sure those who spend so much of their time putting together stuff to help the rest of us truly appreciate it... almost as much as the contributions :-)

I agree with amg212. Test-driving a new ROM and providing feedback on it's performance/bugs isn't always a 5-minute job. Sometimes you only find a bug after a couple days of usage. I personally don't anything wrong with a quick "thanks, downloading now..." message and a more detailed bug report later. First report shows the ROM Cooker he's got an audience and thus not just wasting his time, and second report allows him to fix bugs and cook a better ROM next time...my 2 cents...

Hey, could someone do me a favor and post a mirror so I can download this too. You see I'm behind a firewall and the wifey watches me at home so I must do it here at work and the CIA have bugged Starbucks so I can't go there either!

Why not have the one thread in that contains the cookers main postings and contains bugs from users, and a seperate thread for gratz comments etc?
That way the releveent infomation about bugs etc is easily see and the cooker can respond to them, and the people who want to sing the praises can.

I wouldn't even mind if people posted "thanks" but then came back and edited their post with relevant information later - rather then posting way on down the thread.

Could I add another small proposal? There be a single place to announce roms and maintain links to the discussion in forums? I was thinking a simple list in the wiki that each artist/chef :-) could have a paragraph for their creation that they could maintain. Perhaps another section for applications and another for extracted applications.

That's how the hermes wiki originally was with original pages for seperate developers and tracking of their releases. I'm just to lazy to create a wiki page and keep it up to date...
