As far as I can tell getting the data back is not an option. The best you can hope for is to wipe it and start again. Luckily this phone has a ton of internal memory so the only things i have on my card are TomTom maps and music which are easy to copy back over.
I've been using my laptops card reader to format it cause my desktop and usb reader wouldn't read it. But I just tried http://www.cnetx.com/format/ and that works too if you can't find a PC with a card reader that can read it.
I'll probably get a replacement if I keep having this problem cause I've already tired 3 different SD cards and it keeps happening: 512mb, 1gb, 4gb. All different brands Kingston, Sandisk, and Transcend.
I'm trying my Sandisk 2gb card now.

Corruption appears to be random... and not permanent...
I've been having some troubles with my phone as well... When I look at the SD card via File Explorer, Resco Explorer, or through ActiveSync, most of the files and folders will be missing - replaced with random numbers...
If I remove the card and put it back in, everything returns.
It has scared me numerous times when I thought I lost all of my files, but it's not permanent (in my case).

I just shipped my phone off to http://www.bodyguardz.com/ to get fitted for a case, but as soon as it's back I'll give that a try. I tried resetting the phone, but I never tried taking it out and putting it back in.

One morning I found all the filenames on storage card scrambled, but after restart they all came back... nothing lost. Only happenned once in a month.

Well, it finally happened to me... I lost the files on my SD card - previously, all I had to do was eject the card and re-insert, and my files would show up... But not last night.
So, I decided to figure out what had happened... Since data recovery is just one of the things we handle at work, I fired up some applications to figure out where my data went. I assumed that the data was still there, but just no longer visible - similar to when, with Windows 98, if you powered off improperly, your drive would think you had less data than you did, and a scandisk fixed it...
Ran the utils, and all 350MB of files I had thought were gone were sitting right there - the recovery apps said they were right there - I should see them. Until I looked at the PATH... Turns out that something is going wrong with the path structure, the files that were missing were in the "." path... Confused?
Let's say the root of my SD is the "I:" drive... So
I:\Blah.file is where my files were...
But now, they were here:
I:\.\Blah.file
Still there, just in "." - and of course, you can't access that! So I simply had it move the data back to the root, and viola - all my files, no corruption, no lost data.
I decided to do a chkdsk on the card, to see if anything had gone wrong other than the data (it was 5AM and I didn't want to do a full byte scan with the recovery apps). XP's chkdsk reported that the path structure was invalid, and even noted that "." and ".." were wrong, so it corrected them! WARNING - DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE DATA, XP/VISTA CHKDSK WILL NOT RESTORE YOUR FILES THIS WAY, IT WILL ONLY CORRECT THE BAD PATH, BUT YOUR FILES WILL NOT COME BACK. And, funny thing, it said I had CROSSLINKED FILES! Now that's weird - and the only time that really happens is when write processes are interrupted...
Anyway, for people that have important files that they think they have lost, they can probably be easily recovered... Just do NOT use standard operating system tools to fix it, since they probably won't...

I received my Spring Touch on 11/5 and loaded a bunch of pics and a couple of video clips onto my SD card. A day or two later I went to show someone the pics in the Camera Album app, but it was empty. I looked at my card and everything was gone.
I think that was with the 512MB card that came with the device, but I can't remember for sure since I soon went out and purchased a 2GB card. Regardless, I have had no troubles since then (almost one whole month), but I'm careful to have a backup of any file that I store there on my PC as well.

Could you recommend a data recovery app that do this job and would (hopefully) be affordable for personal use?

The memory card in my touch has corrupted 2x already in the time I have had it. The first time, I only had about 200 MB of files on the card, but it was showing out of memory--none available.
Reformatted the card, was good for a week, now my entire My Documents folder has disappeared, but the available space on the card would indicate that the contents of the My Documents is still taking up storage space.
How do we report this to HTC?
I am using the 512MB card that came with the phone as my wife is withholding my 4 GB Card as a Christmas present.

Didn't lose any files. Directory is just scrambled.
Restart and it all comes back.

add me to the list... in my case, it could be due to me removing the card while the device was in sleep mode. SD card corruption has happened at least once on every WM device i've owned so i always create frequent backups of "important" stuff. fortunately, i recovered from today's corruption (in 5 mins) using a day old backup.

ppcgeeks.com found a minor solution to this, and that is to prevent the device from fully going to sleep by using s2u2 to turn the screen off but leave the device on, it prevents 3 problems people have been having 1, it prevents the corruption issue with microsd cards, and it prevents the device from not waking up from sleep and as well as prevents people from missing calls because of that

I had my second run-in with corrupted storage card on my vogue.
Mostly I wanted to save the pictures and was able to do so using this free program http://www.download.com/PC-Inspector-Smart-Recovery/3000-2242_4-10261986.html?tag=lst-1
PC Inspector.
It took hours for it to inspect the files, but it found all of my photos. It doesn't however look like it can find and restore anything other than files in image formats.

I encountered the same problem. I usually just need to restart the Touch. But today, reboot doesn't work any more. This is really frustrating.

I'm not sure if i'm happy to read that i'm not the only one having problems with the Vogue :( After a week of ownership, I experienced my first data corruption on the standard 512 card. However, the only main problem was the 100MEDIA folder in DCIM was gone (along with all my photos). I believe I had the camera album open when the device went to sleep. I just cleaned the bad clusters and made a new folder.
Every week random programs stored on my card won't run and File explorer shows the files aren't on the card anymore. After a soft reset, they're back.
When I take the card out and replace, it becomes "Storage Card 2." Opening this folder shows only Outlook email attachments. I can also open the "Storage Card" folder but missing files are still gone.
I also miss about 3 calls a week from the thing locking up and not coming out of sleep. Besides just having the backlight turn off, has anyone found a solution?
I'm a bit upset about this, but I always keep my contacts (my only important data) synced with my exchange server.
Should i try a replacement phone, or will i have the same issues?

Well my last phone was a Magician which I still have and have never experienced any of these corruption issues that's why I was so alarmed when it happened to my Touch.
So I've started treating my SD card a little more gently. I completely power off my Touch before taking out or putting in the card and I don't store emails there. And when I soft reset I never use the pin-hole button, I hold down the power button till Windows asks me if I want to power down, this seems to allow all the programs to shut down properly. That seems to have done the trick for me I haven't had a corruption in weeks (crosses fingers). So I’m guessing it was my fault since I was so used to being able to pull my card out at anytime on my Magician without any fear of repercussions. If it does happen again after all these precautions that I’ve taken I will have my phone replaced under the warranty or insurance plan.

I never needed to remove my memory card or even touch it once I put it in. that was the same for both my phones yet I still have the problem. I completely reinstalled everything on my current microSD and need to figure out some good way of backing it up in case it happens again. Since the issue seems to be on a multiple number of phones, I can't imagine it has to do with the type of phone or a problem with the phone. The problem seems to be with Windows' management of the card. I sure wish someone on this thread could recommend a good utility that can see what's up with the card when it has this problem. The space shows as used but you can't see any files and I've tried several utilities.

I also believe the problem is related to the way windows manages the card.
As far as backing up the card that can be a bit of a problem since you would have to take it out and plug it into your computer to backup. If you're willing to do that then the simpliest/cheapest solution is to just copy the contents of the card to a folder on your computer.
Since the Touch has so much internal memory I suggest you don't risk installing anything to the card except for really large programs like TomTom maps. On my card I only have TomTom maps, music/movies, and extra bibles for OliveTree.
I haven't found anything to completely restore the card, but I've used Norton Disk Doctor to recover specific files.

i thought i was the only one!!! :( im using a 4GB.
well,,i already had this problem twice but i thought maybe it was due to my resco radio. i was ok until i put that program on my device and then card and both times i saw the problem of files being deleted or having files i couldnt access or try to delete.....looked just like the pics on sand_man post. so, yeah i had to reformat but i exchanged my card for a new one and not putting resco radio and ill see if that was the issue. i also have tom tom and all the maps were just erased but of course i have a back up.
and i dont use Slide 2 unlock...i hear its VERY buggy. but hopefully someone can figure it out and i dont think getting a new phone will solve the problem.

Well as I said earlier i started treating my SD card a little better and I haven't had any issues in weeks. I went from having multiple wipes a week to zero just by avoiding the reset button and never taking the card out while the phone is on. So you shoudln't be too worried.

Are you able to open these programs from the start menu, programs menu, file explorer? Have you looked through File Explorer to see if there is anything wrong with your card? Are you saving attachments to your card? Which Today plugins are you running, which programs have you installed? A little more info from you would be helpful.

Well, the corrupted card issue occurred to my friends Sprint Touch the other day. He was unable to fully recover from the corruption. By the way, he was using the supplied 512mb card. This happened to me using a 4GB sandisk card.
In the end, this forum is great, but we need to take this a step further. How many of you have either emailed or called Sprint and/or HTC? They need to hear from us. If anyone has a good email address for HTC, please share it so we can start sending this issue in for a fix quickly. By the way, I called HTC and passed the buck to Sprint. I will call Sprint to give them the info on our issue.

Here's a very interesting observation that may or may not be relevant. I use the Garmin Mobile XT software which when installed via a card reader to the MicroSD card it puts an autorun file on it. When the card is inserted it tries to install. Once installed if removed and inserted it gives the message that it's already installed, do I want to run it? What has gotten my attention is that randomly I may glance at my phone only to find the prompt for the Garmin software on my screen. The card has not been removed nor has it been jostled. It acts like either the card shifts in the slot, potentially disconnecting the card like it was removed, or the driver is resetting causing it to re-detect the card. If this is happening while data is being written, there's a good possibility that this is the cause of the corruption. I would never have noticed had it not been for the garmin autorun program, but I am willing to bet that others had something similar, we'd see similar messages.
Just my thoughts...

That has happened to me with both email, text and Windows Media Player.
For the email/text issue, delete the email/mailbox folder on your storage card that may have been created and corrupted if you chose the option to save attachments to your storage card (I no longer use this option).
For the windows media player issue, I had to select Menu/Show All files in File Explorer and then delete the hidden WMDRM and MSMETADATA folders that were corrupted.

That's a very interesting observation. I had TomTom on my card which basically does the same thing. But I never had it auto-open. So in my case that theory is blown but I'm sure this could definitely be the cause for a lot of people.

hey, my card was corrrupting daily, then someone mentioned that it could be happening due to the way wm handles the card on suspend, so I made sure I have no sd prog's running during a suspend, and got rid of any today items that tell me how much room I have on the card. once there was nothing accesing the card on suspend, all my problems went away, and the card no longer corrupts.

Had this issue 2-3 times daily until a couple days ago. Out of desparation I installed the driver for the Orbit described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305531
Worked perfectly on my Touch.
Also, I've begun reformatting my cards as FAT32 with 4k clusters.
Anyway, I've gone from 2-3 corruptions a day to ZERO. Hope this helps everyone who may not have stumbled on the Artemis driver already.

Been using a Kingston 2gb micro sd in my touch since I got it, was the same card I used with an adapter on my 6700 and treo.. ( on and off ). Without a problem, it still works. No files or folders lost.
Got a new sandisk 8gb micro sdhc. Copied off some items from the 2gb to the phone and copied those files back to the 8gb just fine. Memory app on the phone reported just over 7.5gb left on the storage card.
Took it out and put it into a micro sdhc card reader to xfer some more files. At about 2gb of data the card got an error. I tried again and again and still same error.
Took it out put it back into my phone, loaded wm5storage. Plugged in the phone via usb, loaded the computer management disk management and reformatted the card fat32. It completed.
Took the card out, and back into the reader to xfer files.. PC doesn't see it, put it back in the touch, nope doesn't see it..
Now I can't see it thru PC nor Touch. WM5Storage, disk management, no media.. insert media..
All my other 512, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, cards I do this all the time still work.. Never a problem switching between devices, cameras, phones, Pc..
Returning the 8gb for an exchange. But I am hoping for an answer
thanks,
-CC
P.S. File corruption due to removing a disk while it has open files or files being written to it I can understand. I think that is why Windows has that "quick removal" setting. I've not messed with caches, so I assume the defaults on the Touch would protect the card.. Unless for performance sake they tweaked this considering we'd probably not or never or at least hardly ever remove the card due to it's difficulty..
P.S.S. Haven't tried this but was interesting http://www.cardrecovery.com/?rid=google&kid=cr3101 might be useful for those that have corrupt cards and need the data off them.

My card corrupted today. My battery was running out, so I turned off the phone. When I turned it back on, it didn't even detect that I had a card in there.
I get home, put the card in my card reader, and all the files are there, but the DCIM folder was corrupted, and I couldn't delete it or anything. I ended up just formatting the card, since all I use it for is music anyway.
I put in a 1gb card, and the phone can read it, but when I try to put it in my card reader, all the folders are corrupt now. What a piss off.

No problems since install. I only have music and documents I read on the card, no room for much else at the moment. Music and reading documents have been fine will other programs running.
FWIW, I also use NotifyMe from FdcSoft to let me know if the card has popped out. Everything is working fine.
grr, files looked goofy today in resco explorer. I did a soft reset and it's fine again. I might have had TCPMP playing off the card, paused it and then had the device go into suspend at some time before that. That's the only thing I can think of.

Ditto -- my 2 gig card corrupted today though a soft reboot brought everything back. Dammit...it worked for so long! I suspect the driver does indeed help with the problem to a great extent, but does not actually resolve root cause.

It was mentioned on a similar thread on ppcgeeks that the vogue's registry doesn't point towards or use the .dll provided by this .cab - It was further suggested that the registry be perhaps edited to point towards the .dll and tested.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=11404&page=17
Some mentions of having installed this .cab and still had corruption.
Anyone else care to ellaborate or shed more light?
Thanks,

It is advisable that when transferring data to or from devices that use memory cards, to safely remove the card and use a card reader attached to the computer. This greatly reduces the risk of power surges and other errors when transferring via a connected USB cable. It also reduces power consumption on the device and is much faster. If a power surge happens when you are transferring the data, it will corrupt the data and may also kill the device. This is common practice for users of expensive digital SLR cameras.
I don't think that this is the problem users are experiencing here, but I would like to add it as a side note. Also formatting the card once a while helps clear up file system errors.

I think this may be a hardware problem, maybee the contacts inside the phone are poorly designed, any way to possibly add a wedge in to force the contacts together and see if this solves the problem?

I've stuck a ripped off business card inline with the card. Since that time (two weeks ago) I've had one known corruption; however I did some travel out of cell range in the past week and due to the phone constantly freezing and needing a reboot (another story altogether) it may have happened more often without my knowledge.

guys i have 2 questions,
1. do u know if the hard reset can fix the corruption problem?
2. is it more likely a hardware problem or a software issue?

Here is what happend to my 4gb card. when i picked up my phone this morning and browsed my SD card i found that most of the data/files on it where gone. i tried to do a soft reset but still not all the files where showing up so i looked at the properties of the card(see screen shot) using Total commander and saw that it found 251mb of data but was only showing 1 or so gig free(it's a 4gb card that i just got last week) i also turned the phone off and took the battrery and card out for a while but still nothing. so did i lose data or is windows just not able to see it. i will try putting the card in my computer tonight and see what i get. Any thoughts on this? And i have a telus HTC Touch(CDMA)

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I can't get my Email and Text Message apps to launch from Home scren. When I tap the Email and Text Message icons, it freezes up for a couple of seconds and then does nothing. I can't launch text messaging from contacts list either. Everything else seems to work. Shutting down programs, soft reset doesn't help. I decided to take out the MicroSDHC card and it starts to work again, but once I put it back in, the same thing happens. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
Are you having attachments saved to the storage card? You have to delete the inbox folder in your storage card. This should let you open the messaging application. Then, uncheck the box for lettting the messaging app save to the storage card. There is a bug with that for some reason.

Somehow I lost the ability to write files to the storage card from WM6. The camera would act like it took/saved a picture, but the folder was always empty in the Pictures Viewer. The phone would save to the internal memory and display the pictures fine in the Viewer. I didn't lose anything else on the memcard, like music or cab files, just everything in the DCIM folder was gone and nothing new could be written.
After deleting the DCIM folder, everything worked fine again. I've hard reset a couple times and flashed a new ROM, but it still seems to be working fine for now.
Are people seeing more corruption problems with the SDHC cards?

I have had this problem 3 times since the Alltel upgrade and I really don't know what to do. I am using the HTC Vogue (Bell Carrier).
Initially, it happened after I installed Google Maps. I couldn't access my pictures directly from the SD Card (where you can just tap the picture and you can view it). I could view them through TCPMP or through he Pictures and Videos, but not directly. Then I did a hard reset. Everything was fine for a week. Then, stubborn as I am (and believing that Google Maps can't possibly be the culprit), I re-installed Google Maps... and again it happened! I did a hard reset and re-installed everything again.
Then I just installed Opera Mini 4 and Jbed. No problems noted. Then when I tried to view my pictures in the SD Card, again it says "There is no application associated with"___" (name of file). Run the application first, then open the file from within the application." I can play my music and videos (through TCPMP). I can view the pictures through TCPMP or through he Pictures and Videos but not directly by tapping on them.
Can anybody help me please? This seems to be the only problem I am encountering. I can view the videos and I can listen to the music by direcly tapping on them (and they are viewed/heard through TCPMP) but I can't view my pictures directly which I was able to do before.
Any input/help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

^^^ Well, I hoped that when I woke up today that my problem would go away. Unfortunately, its still there. I can access my videos/music but I can't see my pictures on the micro SD card by tapping on them. I need to view them through the Pictures and Videos program or though TCPMP.
Any help on this issue would really be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I know this is going to sound really odd, but have any of you tried cleaning the contacts on your Micro SD card with rubbing alcohol. I was having a vanishing data issue on the HTC SMT5800 and couldn't for the life of me figure out why the data on my card kept going bad. One day while I was digging through some old video game equipment, I found a old Sega Genesis cartridge cleaning kit and thought just for the heck of it of putting the cleaning fluid on my Micro SD card because at that time I had given up trying to figure out what was going on with that phone. After I cleaned it and stuck it in, I never had another problem with it since and it has worked perfectly for many months now.

My SD card used to corrupt every 1-2 days, requiring a soft reset and on a couple occasions full format. AAbout 3-4 weeks ago, I changed to the alltel rom and then more recently to the sprint leaked rom for gps and rev a. I haven't had a problem yet. The only other difference is that I no longer use resco radio (mainly because I haven't had the time to reconfigure all my radio preferences). I still use coreplayer and windows media to play movies/music from the SD card. So, my conclusion is that this is a software problem fixed by either 1) updated drivers in wm 6.1 and/or new rom, or 2) not having resco radio streaming music or writing temp files to SD card.

I have been digging thru posts here and at ppcgeeks looking for an answer to this issue and have made some progress. I tried the Artemis .cab and though it fixed the problem with complete corruption, I have had what I call the simple corruption that is fixed by a soft reset. My question is has anyone gotten any answers out of HTC?

Yes, sort of. Upgrade to a WM6.1 ROM and the corruption goes away.

I downloaded the official Sprint ROM last friday, still trying to work out the time to do it though. Probably this weekend. Easy enough fix, I suppose.

Wanna bet? I upgraded to the new Sprint ROM (6.1) a week ago and my 4g card is now missing all of "My Videos, ringtones, movies...'. Naturally, before the upgraded ROM I was missing files ever since I bought my TOUCH back in Oct. 07 (its happend 5 times).
HEY HTC, i've been loyal to you since I had the old PPC-6600 (still have it). HOWEVER, THIS IS A PROBLEM YOU NEED TO ADMIT TO AND HELP FIX OR ELSE I WILL MOVE TO ANOTHER DEVICE (God, but, what would be better than a WMD? - iphone....YUK)!

Odd. I went from corruption every other day, to no corruption in 1-1/2 months as soon as I upgraded...this with pointing mail attachments to the SD card, something I could not even consider doing prior. Judging by the sharp drop-off in this and other such threads, I can't see that I'm alone.
Is it worth it to you to try either a) the original card; or at least b) completely reformat your 4gig card? I'd try that to make sure your card isn't genuinely corrupt or even damaged at this point.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing. Nobody complains about SD issues with the 6.1 ROM. And hooyah, if you still haven't reformatted your sd, the PCI File Recovery program might be able to save the lost files. Then I would second reformatting the SD.

None that I've seen. It seems confined to the original WM6 ROM as I have had no issues since updating to 6.1 and believe me, I've been watching for them. With the 6.1 Rom all is good as to SD operation. My bitch now is the camera app, which isn't as good.

I haven't had any problems with microsd cards. I've used a 512mb Lexar, 2gb & 4gb SanDisk's. I'm currently using the 4gb and am constantly moving/deleting/copying stuff on it. I even run the Android emulator on it. I have the official sprint winmo 6.1 rom.
