Just heard that there is a maintenance ROM release for Sprint devices coming on Friday, 11/30. This is NOT the Rev A and GPS release. Its supposed to have some bluetooth fixes, among other things. It should be posted on the HTC website on Friday.

This is the promised ROM they refer to on this page.

"Sprint and HTC regret any inconvenience customers have recently experienced with the Mogul. HTC is working on a new version of the software ROM for the Mogul which incorporates enhancements for Bluetooth performance and corrects issues that were unintentionally created by ROM version 2.16.651.0 (posted on HTC’s website on October 24). Both Sprint and HTC have begun testing the new software and are targeting to make it available for download by the end of November. Once fully tested the download will be made available on this webpage. Please bookmark this page for easy reference."

Common knowledge at this point.

Any word on the roaming freezing problems?

I installed 2.17 last night. I previously had the roaming lockup problem with 2.16 set to 'Automatic' just stepping into the elevator at my office. This morning with 2.17 and roaming setup to 'Automatic' no lockup riding the elevator.

I also experienced the Dpad issue on 2.16 with Bluetooth enabled. With 2.17 and Bluetooth enabled the Dpad is functioning just fine. I also bought a Plantronics 520 headset this week that is BT 2.0 and it is working just fine.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks for the update, Tom! I too got a little impatient last night and installed the new rom. I've yet to run into the same roaming problems inherent in the 2.16 release and everything else seems to be running well. I suppose only time will tell at this point.

This is great news! I downloaded the ROM this morning, but I have been waiting until the weekend to install it to see what the early adopters had to say. Great to hear that it seems to be working better.

Observations:

-DPad working when BT enabled.
-BT working with a Motorola H500 headset. Will also test a Plantronics 510, Motorola S9, and H9 in the next couple of days.
-The ROM is more responsive (paginates more quickly) and transitions from portrait to landscape more faster as well.

Here's a question. Remember back when the Mogul came out, to make the battery last you had to hack 4 reg keys? Have you guys had to do that with 2.17 at all?

I never did the power hacks for the last rom and I can get 2-2.5 days with normal use, although the phone goes on the charger every night regardless. I've only been using this rom since about 11:30 last night but it seems to be the same as before.

I don't know if it's just me but it seems that I have had less signal bars since upgrading to the 2.17 rom. I am convinced, however, that the Mogul is just not very good at displaying it's bars. Whether I have "full signal" or only 1 bar my calls are always clear and I have yet to drop one, so even if it appears as less I haven't had any issues.

Lucky...i only got 12-14 hours normal use, email check every 10 min, no bluetooth, but I'm ok with that. I'll wait another day or so but this ROM looks promising

does this new rom erase the memory on ythe phone so that ill have to reinstall everything? i have a nice setup and an incrremental upgrade wouldnt be worth it

I doubt anyone really knows the answer to this, but...

Will the GPS and Rev A upgrade be a full ROM upgrade that scorched-earths all your programs, settings, etc...or something else? (eg. radio upgrade only) I can live a month and a half or so with what I've got if that's the case.

yes, i can say with an almost certainty that it will be a full rom upgrade

Yes, but not the memory card. you will have to reinstall everything.

Anyone tried the Google Maps "My Location" feature with the new ROM? It would be a nice stop-gap while we wait for real GPS.

Yea lobo back up everything and anyhing you want to save all rom updates start from scratch.

I downloaded 2.17 but havent had a chance to really push it but it at least hasnt caused any problems.

As many have already stated, ROM updates are equivalent to a "hard reset" and will erase everything stored on the devices internal memory. What I find amusing is that Microsoft obviously took the time to build a mobile version of Windows Update into the operating system but don't seem too eager to push updates via that method. After all, we don't have to do a full reformat/reinstall every time we do an operating system update on our desktop machines. It is rather frustrating, but I guess if it makes improvements we'll take it!

I experience the same thing. I can often make calls and use my data connection with "no bars". It does seem flaky.

From my experience (first DSOD within 14 hours of installation), and reading other forums - the problem is still there, though not as bad. i.e. it still freezes, but not as often. Not that this is acceptable, of course.

Does anyone think the maximum volume through the BT headsets is lower now that before? I've got it cranked all the way up and its "normal" no matter what headset I use.

Try hard resettingand skipping the Sprint Customization. People on ppcgeeks have tried it both ways and skipping seems to make the volume better. If you haven't done this after first installing I would highly recommend even without skipping as it seems to eliminate a lot of problems.
As for the DSOD, I drove through most of Minnesota,i.e. bum-ffff-nowhere, with the bluetooth on phone and didn't have any issues. YMMV.

Hey guys, its my understanding that this ROM does not have GPS and Rev A. That ROM will come later in 1Q of 2008. This ROM just fixes isssue with BT, Memory, and Music store I believe.

It appears to have something to do with the way the phone "calculates" the signal bars under EVDO. Sometimes at my house its on the fringe and when the phone displays EVDO it's down to 2 or 1 (sometimes none) bars but it'll flip over to 1x just for a second and show full bars. Kinda goofy, but it's been working fine.
