I just bought the HTC S730 today :-)

Where is the s730 forum here? :-)

I have tried like a crazy person to get the 'built-in' gps to work, but i cant even find one satellite :-( Perhaps they have disabled it in the Rom...

Cant wait to hear from other users who have bought the final version of this phone and if they can get the gps to work..

Could you upload your HTC Home screen? I think a lot of users (including me:) ) are waiting here for this. Would you be so kind please?:)

As soon as I have time we will research it. If the hardware is really built in we will get it going some time (it *will* take time tho)

Got my S730 a few days ago. :-) Loving it so far, except...

Couldn't find any satellites with Google Maps so the GPS does indeed appear to be disabled in the final ROM. I hope someone finds a "fix" for this soon. ;-)

Also, I can't get BlackBerry Connect 4.0.0.76 or 4.0.0.84 to connect RIM. My subscription is enabled (works fine on my BB Pearl) but I can't get a PIN on the S730. If anyone has managed to get this working, I'd love some help.

Cheers

Go to Application Data and the best is you copy the whole Home-Folder and upload it.

Hope you can use it...

Can someone btw tell me how i can get more appointments to show in the HTC Home Screen?

Thank you very much! But not working on Vox, there are some missing files in system and plugin support.. I think the clsid is different from the Vox's one and it will be more difficult to make it work.. It only shows appointments:( I will do some researches:)

And your question - I tried to find it inside of xml, but not there.. HTC made a configurator to modify HTC home on PPC, so maybe for smartphones it also will appear.. I guess:)

I got my S730 today. Have tried with Efficasoft GPS Utilities for Smartphone v2.0 and Chartcross GPS Test Version 1.04. Both programs finds 0-1 satelliets, not enough for positioning, but there seems to be a GPS. But whay can't it identify enough of satellites?

*If* the hardware is indeed enabled, you might want to extract drivers from a Kaiser rom. Whether the hardware is indeed present and enabled is hard to determine from the unclear statements in this thread...

Please explain how we can verify if the GPS hardware is present and enabled? I tested with Google Maps and adamwasta used a number of other tools, so what can we do to make it less unclear for you? Thanks.

Can someone please help me decide between the HTC Tytn II OR the HTC S730? I am a heavy texter, sometimes check email, and want a fast phone. I'm worried that the HTC s730's keyboard is not comfortable -- can someone that uses it give me a heads up on how comfortable/good it is? Is the WM Smartphone's UI annoying? - i've been using pocket pc for a long time & I just want to know if its difficult to switch to a standard smartphone like the HTC s730? :D Thanks in advance for your feedback & comments - they are all much appreciated :D

Hmmm i havent tried yhe Tytn so i cant compare the two phones. But i had a Touch before i bought my S730 and i must that it was a step in the right direction text-typing-wise... The s730 is not as good to type on as an Nokia Communicator (imo the best phone for typing), but it's pretty good. And its great to have two options for typing : numeric with T9 and the qwerty inside...

About the smartphone ui....Grrrrrr it is a little bit annoying.. I hate that the settings are so locked. You have far few options in the settings compared to the PPC interface. But then on the other hand there are some features that works better on the smartphone than on the PDA.

All in all i am a very happy little piggy with my S730. I would not trade it for any other phone on the market.

I am also pretty happy with the S730... i used to have a vox and a wizard i must say I keep going to press the screen on the s730 because i was used to ppc but im sure it wont take long for me to get used to it..

one thing battery for me at least seems to be an issue.. fully charged at 7am this morning I had 1 bar left by 11am... Martin is your battery life the same?

the keyboard on the s730 is excellent very good i am already beginning to become a gun on it.. as for the kaiser my friend has one they are way too big for me i guess you need to ask yourself do you want a phone with pda features or a pda with phone features? :)

Brisbane_guy : I have not expirenced such lousy battery time as you describe. My battery last for about 2 days and i dont turn it off at night. So about 48 hours. But i have disabled BT and WIFI most of the time...

You really should consider the Asus P750 (http://www.heise.de/bilder/100173/0/1). It's only 130g, has 3g, gps (sirf3), wlan, bt2.0, touchscreen, WM6 Prof, 520MHz ARM, 256MB flash and 64MB ram.
On Modaco someone called it the kaiser killer.

Hi Jocky :) thanks for the info - however I'm a qwerty keyboard lover and absolutely cannot live without one --- any ideas on a small phone with a qwerty keyboard that has strong specs, please let me know :) many thanks

How's the 730's speaker (for alarms). I need something loud to wake me up in the morning. :) The 710's speaker is perfect so I hope the 730 is the same, right?

Hi

Wondering if anybody else have a issue with changing day when having the calender view open.

When i try to change day with the 4-way button it responds very very slowly when it finally change day the calender data doesnt update, to check my calender i have to go to week or month view.

The speaker is very loud..

I've found one guy at modaco forum that says he has s730 with some prerelease ROM with GPS working. I've asked him for dumping ROM, so we will see..

Well, it sounds trivial to dump the ROM, but unfortunately on a MSM7200 platform it isn't. The MSM7200 is dual core and consists of a ARM9 which runs radio and a ARM11 which runs CE. The CE part of the firmware is easy to dump, but it's the radio you want and that fttb is not possible with tools such as pdocread. Besides, the only difference between preproduction and production models is very likely that the production model is missing the internal GPS antenna.

I didn't mean it will be easy. But will should start somewhere. I'm also in doubt whether device has GPS antenna or not, but, you know, maybe we will be in luck.
As to the radio, radio ROM can be still dumped to the SD card using bootloader..

In the meantime, is there a way how to find out what display controler is used in the S730? I would like to know if is there a way how to control display brightness, cause full backlight is too much and backlight off (tornado lowlight) is not enough.

Could someone look at the phone's box and write down the FCC ID? I've thrown it out..

A.Bagatov
11-12-2007, 02:14 AM
What is that?

saman-cz
12-12-2007, 07:51 AM
It's the ID under that is device registered in the FCC. When device is submitted for FCC test, manufacturer mostly passes also a couple of documents, including photos of device's inside. When you search for NM8VX (Vox) you found for example photos of antennas.
Using search option i've not found anything which would look like Wings.

HTC S720 has the same chipset (MSM7500) but still no GPS antena.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=783231&native_or_pdf=pdf

Does S730 really need the FCC approval even it wont be available in US? They have HTC 5800 but I havent found it on FCC site.

saman-cz
12-12-2007, 01:15 PM
I guess if it wont be sold in USA, it doesn't need FCC approval.
I don't know whether device which supports both GSM and UMTS needs two antennas or one is enough.
I've checked Kaiser's internal photos but there is no explicit description what part is antenna and for what radio feature serves. In the photos on the link https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=791337&native_or_pdf=pdf, on the second picture, you can see, i guess, bt/wifi antenna in the decoupled part on left and gsm antenna near the left edge of the body part on the right. But, where is a GPS antenna?

12-12-2007, 01:47 PM
Although I was disappointed with the lack of fully functional GPS on this unit, and was hoping it could be sorted, but now as owners are reporting onyl 8-10MB of free memory after a reboot, (compared to 23-25Mb on the VOX) this device is a definite no-no for me. GPS enabled or not, the lack of free available memory is ridiculous, and another nail in the S730's coffin.

R.I.P S730 (HTC wings) - It had the potential to be one of the greatest smartphones but the manufacturers messed up big time when they built it.

Hmm, I do not know where in the Kaiser the internal GPS antenna is located nor what it looks like. But, the external gps antenna connector is definitely the one which sits closes to the camera. So perhaps the copper coloured conductor coming from that connector and running around the edge of the pcb is the internal gps antenna. We need pics of the inside of S730, both pre-production and current production model.

About the ram issue, that's just software and will for sure be solved by rom cookers or by official rom upgrades. To begin with you can run a processviewer and check what is consuming so much.
