Guys,
Here's how you view the .exe file
Go File Explorer, make sure you check the "Show All Files", then go to Windows folder, the file name is "WLANSettings.exe
The attributes for this file is "Read-only", "Hidden", "System" & "ROM"
Any of you willing to test if it works, as i do not know how to enable this function on my device
sounds interesting. On a plain winmobile 6 this file doesn't exists, seems that HTC placed it for some reason...

Exctaly today I found (casually) the same settings on my device!!!
I think...these are the settings swith off of WI-FI!
Anybody knows how to turn ON?
If I click on TURN ON...it does not works... maybe it's necessary to change some valors in Windows..

Hi everyone, this is what i found in windows folder.
(see screenshot002)(hold your cursor over the pictures to see which screenshot number!)
when i click on WLANSettings, I see the option to turn on. (see screen003)
on "menu", there is "Comm manager"(see screen008) & "wifi"(see screen004)
also in wondows folder, there is a htm page for wifi.(see screen007)
I havent really tried to "fool" around with it yet...may try so very soon..!
Oh yes, & one more thing...there is also an exe.file "wrlsmgr"...which shows a different looking comm manager than the original one.I wonder why?(see screen009)

Here my 2 ct:
I think, the phones with the qualcomm chipset in fact are able to do GPS and wifi; HTC just disables them to save licensing cost, because, if they enable wifi, the cost will rise for the phone.
Sounds like making sense, huh?
Anyway, i ordered mine yesterday and am dying for wifi... :-)
So, i hope the best for all of us....

i don't have HTC touch or touch dual, yet.
suggestion:
have someone tried to extract the COMM Manager program from HTC touch and create a .CAB file for it, if need. then take it and install to HTC touch dual device.
once you have it install, do the normal WIFI configuration such as network card and etc... and test the wifi connection.
if it is not working, then most likely the touch dual does not has the wifi hardware addon it.
can someone perform this wifi experiment.
open it and post some hi-res picture. If you do it slowly and gently the warranty will be safe because they will not realize that you have opened ;)
With pictures will be possible without any dubt understand if wifi is in or not

I'll give it a go tomorrow, It just so happens that for that day I will have a touch & a Dual sat on my desk.
I'm also going to do a full dump of the registry and files of the touch tonight, Not the ROM though.
How do you do a registry dump?
Ive got a dual here but dont have any idea how to get a dump or the registry.

It's me Mr Foo, i believed you're the one that called me
I want to tell you that Touch Dual has hidden Wifi settings. Since it has this setting, why don't HTC enable this function ?
Why don't GPS be included too ?
I want an answer from both you & Anne Pan, the product manager

Hi,
Newbie here. I too sent an email, got a reply within a day.
================================================== ========
Like thousands of users out in the world, we are waiting for a Touch Dual with WIFI. I got a few questions:
1. Can the current Tocuh Dual be enabled with WIFI?
2. If it cannot, is it because there is no antenna?
3. Will you all be coming out with a new version of touch dual with WIFI?
I think many many people will buy it if you make Touch Dual like the Japan version with WiFi.
Thanks,
Andrew
===============REPLY============================== ========
Dear Andrew,
Thank you for contacting HTC International.
1. Sorry, can't enabled with WIFI.
2. No, It is default setting.
3. There is No plan currently. We have forwarded you feedback to the R&D center. If there is any update, we will release it at www.asia.htc.com immediately.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again.
Best Regards,
Gary Guo

It's still a bit unclear about the antenna - but it seems like a default setting - more than a hardware issue. However, it's still vague. I'll question them more - but don't blame them if they won't want to reveal. At least they have forwarded to the R&D department. Now - if thousands of us swamp them with mails to have a touch dual with WIFI & GPS ..............

Ok, here is a zip file... Throw the DLL in your Windows folder and import both the registries. Soft-reset, see if it does anything for you.
From the two registry files (one for touch, other for dual) I see that some things are missing for the touch, and a lot of things are missing for the dual. It is quite likely that this won't work, but I guess it's worth a try for a daring individual :)
Good luck!

The zip file contains a DLL and two REG files, put the REG files on your device and 'run' them, this should import them to your phones registry.

Well I've been toying with the idea for a small util app that does exactly this (for both ROM files as well as registry) but it will take me a couple of hours to write and I probably won't be home til monday. If you haven't found anything by then, I'll look at it.

tried that, it says "Could not update itsutils.dll to current version, maybe it is inuse? try restarting you device or restart activesync, or maybe your device is application locked." tried the first two, but not sure how to check if my dual is app-locked
that said, it does start with cpoying d:\blah\itsutils.dll to WCE:\windows\itsutils.dll, and i can't open WCE:\ in start->run either...maybe this is the cause of the problem?

Ok guys, here it is. Note that this one is for the
TOUCH DUAL
WARNING
Be prepared to do a HARD-RESET if you do this!
Attached is a zip file. Extract it somewhere, put both the files in the same folder on your device, SOFT-RESET and run the exe. Click "Patch" and wait. A LOG file will be generated. Please attach it in a new post here. SOFT-RESET again.
If all goes well, your device will not be bricked. If all goes really well, WiFi and GPS may be working. You may still need to fiddle with the WLANManager.exe and such, as well as internal GPS settings before it actually comes alive. So if it doesn't work, keep fiddling with it for a bit before saying "NAY, Chainfire wasted my time and made me do a hard-reset". Also, you may have to reinstall the Comm Manager (use the CAB posted in this topic earlier).
If it was a total waste of our time, you should do a hard-reset, it could be that your device doesn't act weird, but it probably will :)

ok...um...how should i be testing it?
i could get to the settings for wifi from comms manager, but it doesn't turn the wifi on
also, does this patch replace the original comms manager? it looks different, though the functions are still the same...like a new skin perhaps :P
p.s. i just hard reset the dual to try again to make sure...don't have much on it anyway, so doesn't really matter

Good question... how to test it :D
For one, you could download WMWifiRouter (see my signature), load it up, and see if it gives you TNETW1251 device name in the log box on startup. It'll also turn it on if you press 'connect', btw.
You can fiddle with GPS with GPSViewer or GPSTest, see if it does anything at all.
The Comm Manager is from the Kaiser, but I'm not sure it works well on a Dual...
Anyone have any bright ideas?

Could be. As far as I can tell you have all the files to make it operational, as well as the registry entries, radio rom is the only thing left I'd say. Maybe you could try flashing the radio rom from the japanese version that does have WiFi and GPS. Or maybe there is just no way to make it work...

But there is something I don't understand, if the radio is really off in the ROM, why hdubli in the GPS topic, could get the GPS Fix ?:
I did some investigation and made GPS work to get the satellite Fix.But the Comm Port is very much differrent and now need to b checked further so that the other apps such as Tom Tom, etc can use the port.To my Surprise the Protocol is Qualcomm and Comm Port is SMD 7.

Well it SEEMS all the files and registry entries are accounted for. Ofcourse there is always the possibility I missed something.
However, you must keep in mind that this guy has tools from HTC that we don't, that may will be able to activate / deactive things we cannot.
This is also why I told you guys to fiddle with the GPS with GPSTest and GPSViewer, as it may be there after the patch, we're just not having it complete right yet :)

Just wondering if you could post a RegDump (possibly directory/file listing) of your Kaiser?
I think we are still missing some registry entires.
One such entrie:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\CommManager\WLAN]
"DeviceName"="{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\TNETW12511"
If I know how to extract files from Rom's I'd probably stand a better chance at all this.

Yet another attempt, some things changed on the actual driver files front:
- make sure to have your device backed up (with sprite or so)
- be prepared to do a hard-reset
- use at your own risk
- download and extract the attached zip file and copy files to your device
- install the CAB
- run the EXE
- soft-reset
- be disappointed, probably ;)
EDIT: forgot to attach the file, AGAIN! :)

Just tried it.. I'm somewhere in the region of 'be disappointed'..
Copied it.. installed both files.. did a softreset.
Started the Comm Manager:
Comm Manager msgbox:
Failed to reading "Software\HTC\CommManager\5"...
After some browsing I noticed the following:
There's a Wi-Fi icon in the Setting / Connections, clicking this shows connections.
First in line: IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi, but unable to 'enable' since comm manager is not working.
Regarding GPS: The device now seems to detect something on comm 4 Tested with GPSTest.exe and google Maps. Google Maps halted after switching to comm 4.
Started TomTom.. now I can select GPS on Comm 4.. but GPS Status: No GPS Device..
Close but no sigar I guess..
Time to restore the backup.
Keep it up!
Edit1: after restoring my backup I got a 'strange green' Comm Manager.. but seemed to be working.
After performing a hardreset then restoring it was back to normal..
I think we're getting closer as on the kaiser its comm4
As anyone tried this patch on the test rom in the other thread?
Chainfire

Well just thought this up with the patch I posted a few posts up:
- the first guy that showed GPS working already mentioned this GPS talks with Qualcomm protocol, while I think those tools all use NMEA. We should find a tool somewhere that talks Qualcomm (I think TomTom can actually do that, btw). The Windows GPS layer should translate this (I think) but I guess that's something else that doesn't work yet
- seeing as comm manager stop working, try installing the patch, and then installing the "kaiser 10 button comm manager"
Klutsh

- seeing as comm manager stop working, try installing the patch, and then installing the "kaiser 10 button comm manager"
Hey, Done the "kaiser 10 button comm manager" patch after, Result's in no Wi-Fi and if you attempt to start wi-fi Comm Manager starts to eat the device RAM up, so much so that Start>>Programs/Start>>Settings/Calendar all refuse to work, Calendar even report an error of not enough RAM.
A couple of other thing's, MAC address is still blank, without this Wi-Fi would not turn on anyhow.
I think, as somebody else also posted, the Radio ROM is the cause of these features not working and no matter if we get all the right files and reg setting's these features will not turn on.
Another possible solution would be for somebody to flash a kaiser's Radio ROM to the Dual, (I'm not that mad to do it)
Edit:
I've also been getting an error with QuickGPS failing to launch every time I try to sync.
This can be fixed by getting the English QuickGPS CAB found on this site.
It's caused by missing or incorrectly named MUI files.
This would be nice to have working in the end, although for me it's becoming less of an issue.
So now I'll leave it to others who know more about it. (Thats if they ever come back and respond to claims they have already made!!)
But if this does not ever work, Don't stress, just wait for the end of your Contract/Got enough cash and buy a model that should do it.

It's pretty much trial and error because I do not have a Touch (or Touch Dual, or Touch Cruise, or ...). The latest set of files I have posted here at least do something, as a GPS is locatable on COM4. Someone who actually has a Touch Dual will have to figure it out from there. As I have said before, the best thing would be if I had a Touch Dual in my hands so I could fiddle with it, but I don't know anyone who has one.
Still, even if I DID have a Touch Dual in my hands, it'd take me a lot of tinkering to know if it will work in the end.

the Polaris is similar but not identical.
The difference between the 2 terminal is the absence of keyboard, the rollr, the fm radio. Probably the internal architecture is very different.

Well all i can say is i really hope you guys crack this. The Touch Dual is a lovely phone, but to leave off Wi-fi from it, is in my opinion as unacceptable as Apple's Iphone having no 3G. A truely backwards step, all thigns considered.
If things dont come good here, i guess ill be buying an O2 Orbit II in the new year, but damn, the DUAL is sexy, and so useful having a keypad. I wouldnt look like an excecutive holding it up to my ear to take a call. . .

For me... I think I need to import the Japanese one. Fido runs on GSM 850, so whoever posted this link: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=847&id2=736 , If they're right, will be my saviour. My prophet is doing fine, I just want to type faster.

thats very interesting that page explicitly says Wifi on the January 2008 version. . .umm ill keep an eye out on that.
There has been a little bit of interesting news with them getting approval for a few phones via the FCC i think and then, a Japanese broadcast approval for a device called the NIke 100, but looked the same as the Dual, except for a sim card slot on the side, like the Touch.
maybe they will release a wifi version after all

Hello everybody!
I'm a spanish guy and I have some questions, because the topic is so large and I loose in it:
Wifi is now running, but a ROM must be build?
GPS is running too, but there is no antenna?
If I flash my Niki with a custom Wifi-operative ROM, I loose spanish language? No way to translate it?
I have the money for a Niki. Can I buy it? Or you think the ROM will not run propertly?
Sorry, I don't want to hurry you up. Thanks a lot for all you hard work.

Hi Everyone
Upon completing a mass of research and sucsesfully installing a hard SPL & WWE rom on my no longer Orange branded touch dual i have been trying to find out how i can enable the GPS & Wifi that are on board with the Qualcomm 7200 chip.
While researching (someone may want to back me up on this) i have done a thorough comparison on the 2 handsets and they seem to be the exact hardware base. the only differences are as follows....
A few mm either way in dimensions
GPS is enabled on the cruise
wifi is enabled on the cruise
The cruise is quad band (dual is tri)
Cruise has no keyboard but 4 way nav wheel
Cruise has 3mp camera
Not a great deal between the 2!!
Any opinions?
Can we combine the 2 roms? or install cruise rom on dual and update the keyboard driver? or even the other way (bit more complex with wifi and gps drivers) :D

Hi guys,
I am also asking myself, has someone succeeded in enabling the WiFi on the Touch Dual or not?
I have been following this thread for a long time now, and as I have understood so far there has not been any success in flashing the ROM or some other way to enable the WiFi.

I've been trying this for a while now, whatever drivers I include etc i cant get the wifi to turn on, or decide it has a MAC address, thus i conclude that our last hope is in the radio rom.

Ok, I've found some Kaiser Radio ROMs here http://www.cinetsystems.com/xda/index.php?path=Kaiser+Radio+Only+Upgrades/
I assume the one to use would be the one with the highest REV, i.e. KAIS_Radio_Only_1.27.14.09_CustomRUU.rar ? Downloading it right now.
Then use CustomRUU.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356259 ?
Not clear if anything else is needed ?
I'm starting from an Orange Dual.

Hello everyone.
Excuse me for my poor English.
I am the one living in Japan, and got really excied to hear Dual Slide would be released in Japan.
However, the phone is not yet approved by JATE ( FCC). NTT Docomo hasn't been update the web page since last August. The web page says HT1100 will be available by the end of 2007!!
It will be highly unlikely that HT1100 is release in Japan soon....
Originally, some web page posted that HT1100 has WIFI conectivility,
but they may be confused with F1100, Docomo anounced on the same day.

Hello everyone. I am a new member. Since 1 month I am trying to decide myself wether to buy HTC Touch Dual or HTC Touch Cruise (the new comer). I prefer the HTC Touch Dual but as this cell has no gps and especially no wifi, I was waiting for the cruise to see it and test it in live in a shop to be sure.
In the meantime I have been through the net to see what people was thinking about both, I read that HTC have maybe disable Wifi and GPS on the dual, and I discovered your forum. It gives me hope to buy the dual and activate wifi and gps later on. But unfortunately all great tests you proceeded failed.
So today I decided to call HTC support in Paris (01.70.75.91.71). I explained them that I have a dual and that I have read on the net that it was possible to activate both wifi and gps. They asked me why I need them, I explained and they said that if I accept to reload my cell more often they could activate them, they said it was possible to do it. They asked for the S/N of my cell but as I have not bought it yet I coud not give it to them. Then I explained that I was about to buy one but the missing wifi and gps was a problem for me. So they said I could buy one, call them again and ask them to activate both wifi and GPS and they will do it (on condition I accept to reload my batterie more often).
Can someone with a dual call them and try to find out if this is possible.
Thanks in advance, maybe the solution is getting closer....

Amazing story, will call them too, did you get the name of the person you talked too by any chance ?
I'm a bit perplexed though because we haven't been able to activate wifi yet but we've been able to activate GPS and sensitiviy is terrible, would they be able to activate the antenna as well, a hardware component? How does this activation work, with an SMS ?
Also what's the story about reduced battery life, if you don't use the GPS and turn wifi off there would be no extra power drain.

I hope KoOka will have more luck, this is no crap, this is what the guy told me but maybe he was kidding me but I do not know why he will do that. I also asked about the difference between the dual and the cruise if gps and wifi were integrated in the dual and he said that on the cruise the camera is a 3 mega pixel and even if you are using gps and wifi it is ok for the batterie, they managed to resolve this problem on the cruise but not on the dual because it was released too soon (for Christmas). As for the antenna and hardware stuff I am not very good at technical issues so I do not know exactly what does it mean.
If KoOla has no luck I will call HTC support again, try to talk to the guy I had yesterday and ask his name...

Ok, so...
I just got HTC Hotline on the phone (well the woman i had was definitely NOT hot...).
I said that i was curious and that i read a lot of stuff here and there about wifi on the Niki, and i asked if there was any way to enable it or if HTC was about to publish an upgrade sooner or later...
Well the answer was a clear NO ! => No wifi or GPS on the niki, sir !
However i think the woman i got on the phone wasn't really qualified to answer my question (who said macho ?), she didn't even seem to be very qualified for anything... (5 minutes to get my last name correctly... :)).
So i think i'm gonna try again later, hoping i'll get someone a little more... technical...
And if any of you want to try the Hotline here's my advice : BE PATIENT ! i tried all day and finally got an answer around 5 PM after 15 minutes of flamenco music (nice song by the way...)

I called the Belgian hotline (I think it was +32 2 504 44 14, not sure tho) and my answer was also a 'no' for the GSP and WiFi functionality... :(
If the tech'ers at HTC were allowed to enable both WiFi and GPS on the devices, then I wonder why the phones don't support that out of the box...
Anyways, my two cents. :)

I used to work on a call center. And yeah.. some agents (but not me.. LOL :D), screw around with customers just to get rid of them... or just for fun. As long as we know that the current conversation is not recorded.. we can have fun all we want. We can say "Sure, we'll do it for you!" or "Yes! we can activate your GPS and Wifi if you give me the S/N of your device and buy more credits!".. so that you will be happy and go away.
The above ( lili74 ) was one of the victims of such mischief.

FYI, none of the call center agents are technical... esp at customer service.
And only 20% of the tech support people are actually technical. They just read solutions of most common tech problems with a script. If the problem is not on the script, we just get a little creative. :D
Just a tip. If you call tech support of any company, immediately ask for the L2 technician if the one you're currently talking to is "unreliable". Don't ask for the supervisor, just the L2 Tech.

Theres most probably WiFi in the Dual just disabled in Windows like everyone has said or in the Radio rom. Both version of the dual will be made in the same factory and the japanesse one also has a different Windows version. Having a GPS chipset means its capable of having GPS but wont have certain features like an antenna well sounds like that.

I have just seen this reported on over at Modaco:
http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/
Looks like they found a way to activate GPS on an MSM7500 by replacing the radio firmware as suggested elsewhere. A Niki version of this firmware update should be able to activate both GPS and Wifi, provided the antenna is present.
Only problem is that their workaround seems to also rely on an internet connection (for GPS anyway). Weird. Hopefully a fully functional GPS device wont be far around the corner.

OK ... USB isnt USB! Importent thing!
Your HTC Nike have a Chipset they cant provide a USB Host Master! It only is a USB slave. it means ... he cant communicate with any other USB slaves.
You can only buy a SIDO Wifi Card for MicroSD slot.

You, er, kinda don't yet.
Spectec were (are?) making them, but they're either not in production, or very difficult to get hold of. And expensive. I think they were supposed to be around $150? And of course you have to take your memory card out.

It was the same thing when they tried to enable GPS on the hermes. They flashed the radio rom of the trinity into the hermes. But since the hermes does not have an antenna the device couldn't get a gps fix

It is possible, but it's not the radio thats stopping GPS it's a value set in the NVRam of the device.

[Dutch] From tweakers.
Will translate it later tomorrow.
Kind regards Rob

From tweakers.
Yet not everything is better: the Dual Touch has not crazy enough wifi chip inherited and that we find in a modern PDA-phone is a failure. Perhaps HTC believe that the addition of the rapid communication HSDPA wifi support redundant, but there are currently no inexpensive data subscriptions telling you the speed HSDPA fully exploit and these are provided with a fair-use policy or a few megabytes of data. WiFi has, in our opinion, is still most definitely an added value.

For the dutch/european readers: There is NO WIFI chip in the phone ! they left it out.
Source (tweakers.net who opened the phone and noticed that they left the chip out)
The article seems to be a superificial review, I mean, not technically deep enough. I wouldn't say "...twakers.net who opened the phone...", that's not true at all, they simply unboxed it; the only thing opened is battery/simcard space, which is basic for starting the device ;)
Translated page of the article here (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Ftweakers.net%2Freviews%2F 781%2Fhtc-touch-dual-opengeschoven-en-betast.html&langpair=nl%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8).
Only one possibility and thats to buy a minisdcard with wifi!
Are you paid by Spectec :D? just joking ;)
I pesonally think we still can get wifi working on Niki.
Sorry for asking again but, has anyone else taken any photo of the bluetooth board inside the Niki?
