View Full Version : [1/28/08] iPhone skin for PCM Keyboard - refined

After many months of tweaking this skin, I think it is about as good as it can get (for my personal use). For those of you not familiar with PCM Keyboard, it is a program being developed as a replacement on screen keyboard for PPC devices.

I am providing the skin and layout files only, please refer any program or device compatibility questions to the developers thread or website.
The latest version the application can be downloaded at this link (keep in mind the developer currently puts an expiration of 30 days on each version until it is commercially released. So plan on upgrading to the newest version each month or plan on purchasing the software when it is launched):
http://pocketcm.com/keyboard2.php
Support:
http://pocketcm.com/phorum/index.php?9
XDA thread with the latest version information:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321712

There are two types of files that have to be loaded onto your device and selected in the options/settings for this skin to work: The keyboard layout file and the keyboard skin file. Choose either the Eng 2many or Eng 2many., layout (the second having the , and . next to the space bar) AND either the 2many GreyiPhone or 2manyiClone skin. I suggest restarting the device to make sure everything has changed correctly.

This design was done to allow almost any layout work with this skin, so check out the multi language layouts and a "azerty" layout created by ialu in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330525

Here are some features of this skin:
Main screen:
-Numbers pop up if you press and hold the "123#?" key
-Basic symbols pop up from the space bar. Period with a space is the default pop up key, so if you press and hold too long and don't slide to another symbol, you will get a period and a space.
-If you press and hold a letter, you will get a caps letter (idea borrowed from my BlackBerry).
-Caps lock is still double press on the shift (up arrow) and double press to change back to lower caps.
On the symbol keyboard (one press of 123#?):
-If you press the internet explorer key you will get "http://www."
-If you press and hold the internet explorer key you can choose: https://, .net, .org, .com or www.

The Grey iPhone skin / layout also supports landscape. This was not easy and I had to compromise some eye candy to get all the buttons to look right in both orientations. It does take up a LOT of screen in landscape, but I didn't want to make the buttons smaller for portrait use.

Keep in mind all of this customization is set in the layout file and can be opened and modified in wordpad. The only trick is making sure it is saved as a .layout file. I suggest making a copy of the layout file you are changing, rename it, make your changes and then save it (not save as).

I made this skin for my personal use and am sharing because I haven't seen anything else that works as good - for me. I am not a developer or a designer, so again please try to search for questions in the thread links I have provided. Please feel free to modify, use, distribute any of the graphics or file settings - no need to ask ;)

Newest Version has been posted in this thread:

Excellent! Thanks! Though I will need to slightly mod it to add the "_". No one seems to put that on their layouts. Apparently, I'm the only one who ever uses it, and I do in my passwords sometimes...

EDIT: Just noticed that a hold of the "-" will also do a "_". Cool! I'll still add a dedicated button for it. I don't need the .com since I made the press and hold of the http button default to a .com, instead of .net, and also I use the "_" much more than .com as I have most of my sites bookmarked...

But awesome skin again! Thanks for the time and effort!

I download the zip file but how do I install it on my PPC 6800 ?

1. Download the program cab from the link on post one (v12 is the current).
2. Install onto the device
3. Using active sync, open the folder program files\PCMKeyboard
4. Drag all of the files in the zip (or just the iphone12 skin and eng iphone12 layout if you don't want the multi language options).
5. Go to settings, input and select PCM Keyboard as the input method
6. Click on the options button and change the keyboard layout and keyboard skin to Eng iphone12 and iPhone 12. See the screen shot. I alsot changed the feedback on letters to 30 ms from the default 100. This is how long it takes for the feedback graphic to pop up. Basically 30 is if you want it to show up quickly when you press letters (like the actual iPhone) or if you want to type faster and not have it show the pop up of the letter you pressed, leave it at 100.
7. Once the options are set, press OK and OK to exit the input screen.
8. I suggest restarting the device to make sure the layout and skin set correctly. If you do not have a SIP change program on your device, when you restart, it will default back to the standard keyboard. I recommend default IM and have attached the cab file in this post. Install it, run it and it should keep PCMKeyboard as your default, even after restarts.

I Love it!!

This is Really good!

Just a view question,
Could you make the same thing only then change the colors
so, dark keys with light characters?
Would make it complete!

and is it costumizable?
because i have changed the order of the characters ever sinds i use pcm keyboard.
but now when i use your skin i don't get numbers but special characters when holding the 123 button.

and i don't have a . next to it so i lost the extra options when holding that.
can i change it my self in one of the files?

Depending on what device you have, I would suggest mapping a button to the screen rotate option. That way it is a simple press of the button. The only hassle is usually you need to bring up the keyboard once it has changed orientations.

Tene, you don't know any tricks to be able to create a softkey imbeded in the keyboard to switch to landscape?

For some of you that prefer the reverse on the keys, here you go!

You can use the same layout file as the one on post one, but it is included in the zip file attached to this post.

Installation instructions are in post #10 of this thread.

No, and if it's added, there need to be a way to avoid pressing it by mistake.

However, I'm not sure people want landscape device, I have the feeling they want a big fullscreen keyboard in landscape without making the app landscape. (because in landscape there's very few space for the app once the SIP is shown).

Please excuse my ignorance on this but I have a question regarding installation of this skin. I already have Pocket CM installed on my Touch and therefore rather than downloading the "iphone12 files.zip" I simply downloaded the "iphone color.zip" file and then unzipped the layout and skin file to my existing PCMKeyboard folder under programs. I selected the necessary options for these and then did a soft reset. Everything appears to be fine but the keyboard doesn't function as advertised. More specifically if I hold down any key it doesn't auto capitalize or if I hlod the space bar it doesn't insert a period and a space (ala blackberry).

Is this because I didn't install the "iphone12 files.zip" first? Is that a newer version of the keyboard that I'm running that needs to be installed over the existing one first before using the skin and functionality?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I got that message to but what I did was open up internet explorer and opened up the keyboard as if I was going to type and then if you hold down the keyboard icon it will let you choose the keyboard you want to use. Go ahead and pick PCM Keyboard and the default PCM keyboard should pop up then go ahead exit out of internet explorer and follow the instructions from before going to settings and Input Method Options and it should work!

I don't want to use IE everytime I want to get into options.... Did you try doing a soft reset and see if it works??

Thanks!!

BTW 2manyphones: What is the Default IM.zip file you attached in post #10? Is that the settings that you are describing in that post?

The Defauld IM cab is a program that allows you to set PCM Keyboard as your default, so when you soft reset, it will still be your selected option. Of course you need to install PCM Keyboard and select it in input or using the up arrow next to the default keyboard icon.

Would love to see smileys' incorporated into this though:) perhaps by holding down the space key?

I messed with putting smileys into the layout and skin, but I don't use my mobile for IM and my company exchange server is on Exchange 03 that doesn't support HTML. So, I never would use the smileys. My goal with this skin and layout was to allow you enough flexibility to add whatever you wanted in the layout file. Sorry....

All of the customization (where keys are and what pop up options there are) is done in the layout file. So yes you need to download the iPhone12 zip folder, unzip, put the file eng iPhone12.layout file in the PCM folder and then select it from the PCM settings. The .skin files only change the graphics of the keyboard. The good part, I think, about this design is I have provided three different .skin files that you can load on your device and quickly change the look to fit your taste or mood.

You are right.. I opened IE, went back and was able to get into options... However when I turn my phone off and turn it on (soft reset), same issue.. gives me the same message ... probably a bug??? I don't want to use IE everytime I want to get into options....

Did you follow the installation instructions in post #10? You need to change the selected keyboard either using your "open IE" method or go into settings, input. Once the keyboard is selected, to get it to stay selected download the cab file "default IM" in post 10, go to programs, run default IM and select PCM Keyboard. That should work.

Thanks everyone for the appreciation. Nice to see people using it and enjoying the look. :D

After you installed the Default IM cab file, did you go to programs and run Default IM to select PCM Keyboard as the default?
If you have done that, it may be a device compatibility issue and I would try reading more in the support threads that I linked to on page 1 of this post.

Can I suggest to actually make the whole keyboard little smaller, as it occupies quite a lot of space on QVGA displays, and especially when in landscape mode. Perhaps another 10-15% shrinking, with that beautiful Black colour will be awesome.

I'm wondering if someone is kind enough to modify the "eng iphone14" so that there's no number row instead.. all the alphabet keys can take that place and be much bigger... i really want to have bigger keys on this keyboard.. and maybe wider too...

in short it's a "eng iphone 13" layout with bigger keys that'll take as much space as the "eng iphone 14"

Thx in advance.

Bigger (taller) keys requires all new button customization. I found this size to have the largest keysize and still work in landscape mode. If you want something with bigger keys, I would suggest SPB full screen keyboard. ;)

By new button customization you mean that we would need a bigger .png files? i am currently trying to learn how to make a new skin and layout files.. any help will be greatly appriciated

Yes. The four .png files that define the key images would need to be made taller (not wider or they will not fit in portrait mode). You would also need to increase the key row height value in the settings.ini file, within the skin file.

Hi:
Thanks so much for making this amazing skin!
Pocket PCM keyboard is a GREAT app, but does anyone know when that HORRIBLE expiration business will end? I mean come on, I'd rather just pay for it, than have to keep reinstalling once per month. And it always seems to expire at the most inconvenient times.

Go into any program that uses keyboard. For example, open to write a new SMS. Then when you select keyboard, I believe you will see PCM keyboard listed there.
After that, you will need to go into settings/input, and select PCM keyboard as your default keyboard.
If you are going to use skins, you will select them there, under options.
Also, you probably want to install default IM program, which I am attaching for you. If you don't install it, you will have to reselect PCM as default after each soft reset.

PS: If you need any more help, just ask, hopefully I'll be able to help you out. I am a newbie, so it's a treat when I'm actually able to help someone out :)

It looks to me like your battery icon is in a tray, if this is the case, it will not move (it will always be at the bottom of the today screen. You may want to look into other battery indicators which are today plugins. I really like one called Vista Hide Battery Guage. IT is a very thin colored strip which goes at the top of the screen, and changes color as battery goes down. I will attach a screenshot for you to see.

Make sure you are selecting one of the Eng iphone layout files included in the zip file from post 1 or post 46. You must select both the layout file and the skin file in the PCM Keyboard settings for it to work correctly. Restart the device to make sure the layout has applied and you should be good.

Did you first open a program which uses keyboard, and select PCM (such as IE, or new sms)?
After doing that, you should be able to set it as default.

A greek English layout for for iphone 12 skin
unzip and copy the iphone 12 skin and the greek layout in the folder of PCM KEYBOARD

Hello there,
I am testing the Greek layout on a WM6 ETEN x500 with the English Rom installed, however the Greek letters are not readable, (I see symbols rather than Greek letters).

I have successfully installed the SPB keyboard and Greek Keyboard skin and it works great with the Greek letters, but not the PCMkeyboard.

Any ideas
Thanks

Thanks for the great layout for the keyboard. I only use this one now.
But it seems that there is a problem with a landscape mode (when using PocketCM contacts SMS.)
With using the iphone12 with a note application, it shows all the keys. But when I open this skin with Pocket CM contact with SMS typing in landscape mode, the right hand side of the keys just become white and can not type letters on that side. It covers about 20% of the landscape keyboard.
Is this layout not compatible with the CM contact SMS landscape mode? Or maybe there is a problem with my phone....

Thank you

Hi,

Dowloaded and copied the Given TouchXL skins into the PCM keyboard folder beside the other skins at My Touch XL, inwhere PCM keyboard is already installed.

After I select either xl 123 or xl sym skins,
What happened is that NOT typing anything or typing, but not seen. (maybe it types white that is why non visible, as I noticed that cursor is moving.

The effect is the same when I press space button.

What the heck is this??? Anyone can comment ???

Loaded Rom is the recent Rom 3.0 from Swiftable.

I very rarely use my Touch in landscape and never with PocketCM / SMS, so I can't say if the skin is set up for that or not. You may want to try some of the other skins or layouts that I have posted (links) on page 1 of this thread to see if some work better. If you can post a screen shot of what you are seeing, I can try to help identify the problem .

I had this problem with one of the PCM Keyboard versions and one of Swiftblades ROMs. If I remember correctly it is a compatibility problem with the HTC Touch Keyboard/Keypad with XT9 and PCM Keyboard.
I would try:
1. Make sure you have the newest version of PCM Keyboard (version 13 was released 1/13/08). http://pocketcm.com/keyboard.php
2. Swiftblade lately has not been including the Touch Keyboards in his ROM (THANK YOU!!!) so my guess is you installed it. I would unintsall the keyboard, reset and see if PCM Keyboard works.
3. If the Touch Keyboard is on the ROM, go into settings, input, Touch Keyboard and unckeck the box for XT9.

Good luck!

this works perfectly. thanks for the good instructions as well!!!

edit - SPB keyboard does not seem to be the default when I restart device, even though I have installed IMselector as well... does anyone have suggestions as to why this is? it's not a big deal I guess... I made sure I set everything to SPB as default, then went into IMselector, then let it stay on for a few minutes. When I turn off/on the device to see, it doesn't work. If I open IM selector it actually has SPB as the default, but the windows keyboard icon on the bottom is showing the stock touch logo. That's pretty weird...

This thread is related to PCM keyboard, so I don't know if you are confusing the name or the application.
If you are trying to set SPB FullScreen Keyboard as the default then you have likely done right, you just need to press the top left keyboard key on the default looking keyboard. SPB works best to have a buttom mapped to it as it will not automatically pop to landscape full screen automatically.
If you are having problems setting PCM keyboard as the default, I would try the program SIPChange, instead of defaultIM and see if that works.

Thanks! I used that skin for the "Happy Tapping Keyboard" before PCM Keyboard came out. I will need to look and see about the arrows. I don't know what the layout commands are for those. I guess I always just tap on the screen to move around, so I am not sure how needed they are.

Try this skin and layout I have been working on. It is a clone to the iPhone keyboard (created from screenshots of my iPhone ;)). Let me know what you think.

OK I'll take a look. The arrow keys - in a tight screen space - are more accurate than a fat finger. We find ourselves holding the tiny stylus to navigate the cursor - you know how you type something and then want to add a line. Even more useful in typing a URL since when you first hit the URL line it auto highlites the entire URL - and maybe you only made a mistake on 1 letter, but 7 spaces back.

Your layout 12 is phenomenal with the pop-ups like CAPS and number line - perhaps the same with the arrow keys ?

The only problem we had is that the CAPs perhaps should have a "lock" option, or the time to press and hold to initiate caps, adjustable - it really slowed down the typing.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT PROGRAM - BY FAR, the best we have seen !!

Glad you like my skin and layout. Keep in mind this is not my program. Tene (aka Quentin) is the developer and deserves most of the credit for such a flexible SIP.

On your caps comment, if you press the shift key (up arrow) once you get one letter caps. If you press twice quickly it will caps lock. Tap twice to remove the caps lock.

Depending on your device and application, you may also try the d-pad (up,down, right, left) buttons on your device. This is how I navigate into specific text without using my finger.

I realize that it's not your program and Tene deserves a ton of credit , but you made a huge difference to the many users I have read, including us now !!

The forums on Tene's site are the first place we scoured before truning to XDA and PPCGeeks. Why isn't this reference on Tene's site ??

The CAPS lock works excellent, now that I understand the sequence.

Not so good for the d-pad. I just tried a test message in Word, and left right arrows work well - but the up/down jumps, for some reason and not 1 line at a time ... strange. I'll try some other apps to see if it is the same ?

Does it do that for you ??

2manyphones

You are correct it seems to be application driven. In word the d-pad controls right and left, but up and down go from top of the page to bottom of the page / text. In Notes, the up and down don't do anything.

The solution: MS OneNote Mobile. That works great with the d-pad. I have attached a cab for it, if you don't have it on your device. Of course I will still look into incorporating it into the keyboard skin layout.

I am having troubles installing the PCM Keyboard onto my HTC Cruise. I have tried several solutions opted in this thread.

Firstly after I install the .cab, then copy the skins to the right directory, I went to Settings > Input. There I select the PCM Keyboard, as soon as I press options I get the error PocketCM Keyboard has to be the current SIP in order to configure it

Ok, no harm done, let's use Default IM (IMSelector) to set PCM Keyboard as default and reboot. But it still gives me the same error.

Then I have tried disabling the xt9 via registry, but that results in the error:
the selected input method could not be loaded

I have no idea where to go next, any help is much appreciated!

When you press the button "àA" this had all the vowels with the accent.
Try it and you'll understand...That skin is perfect for all the nationalities of keyboards.

Greetings

I get it now. I am the typical American that doesn't think any other language exists :o. I will see if I can make a layout file that includes the vowels with accent, in addition to the cap of the letter pressed.

Great skins 2many. Using it for a while perfect.
I have been trying to make my wizard easy to surf the net and one of the most frustrating things is entering passwords, having to remember different ones, on my desktop I use SplashID and also have it on my ppc. On a desktop you just keep maximising, Minimizing, copy & paste password, its simple. But not on ppc its to fiddly.
Now my reason for posting is this, I've thought of an idea (well still thinking, really) to make it easier using tene's keyboard.
Another layout with numbers or letters either randomly placed or even hidden? and instead of remembering the password you just remember a pattern? i.e. say around outside keys and a middle key?
Like I said its a thought in motion, what do you think? The layout is not to difficult but the graphics for me is beyond my scope.

Comments please. Flame me if you must.
Sorry if this is hijacking your thread.

Not a bad idea. In fact I have customized a layout with my common passwords. You can add anything you want to any key (other than anything random) by modifying the layout file. Change the extension from .layout to .txt, open in wordpad, add your characters to the key you want it to pop up from, save it, change it back to .layout, copy to device and select it in the keyboard settings.

That is my fault. :o I have made so many layouts with different keys, this one I didn't add them. I have attached a layout file that has the greater and less than if you hold the space bar (same place the ! key is :D). Make sure you select this new layout file "2many2" in the settings and I would suggest restarting the device to make sure it has applied the change.

Thanks for your work! Your efforts are appreciated!!

IM'd you regarding this problem, but I want to post it also.

With my regular windows keyboard when entering the name in the "To:" field, after typing a couple letters, it suggests the contact. When using PCM keyboard, it doesnt suggest anything. Anyone else have this issue?

New to phone tweaks ect and wanted to purchase the HTC Touch from Sprint, but hated the keyboard and from the reviews most people do. Since I text a lot I started looking for another phone until I found this site.

So my question is, once I install it per your directions, will I have to update it if it works fine? Also, this is designed to work on the Touch correct?

Thanks again for helping a newb... :)

Yes, you may have to install new versions of PCM Keyboard as the developer releases them. The program is under development and the creator sets the beta versions to expire. You shouldn't have to reload the keyboar skins or layout file however, just uninstall one version, restart device, install new version and reselect the skin and layout.

Yes it works great on the Touch. There are some issues with the default keyboard and the windows autocomplete feature, but if you have never used another device with this feature, you won't know what you are missing. ;)

hmmm Maybe I'm missing something (I am new to this stuff), so please forgive me.

To clarify I will not be able to just load up PCM keyboard version *.* (i guess this is the backend programming part) because the its set to expire? Does it just stop working? Isn't it a pain to constantly have to dl these revisions? If it works and I dont care about a few bugs, why would I need to change it or why would it expire. Is it like trial software on a PC (expires in x days)?

Apologies again as I'm just a tad confused on the objective since the the idea of mods is to make life easier, not a monthly change which from an initial thought seems like a pain. My n00blet self has gotta be missing something here lol

thanks again...

If you do not have a SIP change program on your device, when you restart, it will default back to the standard keyboard. I recommend default IM and have attached the cab file in this post. Install it, run it and it should keep PCMKeyboard as your default, even after restarts.
This is another thing that has been annoying me so I was excited to try this .cab. Unfortunately for me, no dice. I have PCM selected in the program but after 2 soft resets it still defaults back to the stock 20 key. Ideas?

Do a search for the program SIP Change. I am on my mobile or I would attach it for you. :) That works on my Touch XL with the 20 key keyboard (and default IM does not).

Personally I think this takes up too much space, but it may work for you. Attached is a modified layout file "Eng iphone14" and the black skin.

thanks for the black skin it looks nice and functions extremely well.

However, when I download the zip file and open it I do not see a cab file for which to install the skins on my phone, to go with the pcm keyboard.
What am I doing wrong?

There is no need for a can file. simply place the skins into pcm keyboard folder, then select the skin in the keyboard settings.

The one and only problem i seem to be having with this newer version that i didn't have with 0.13 is when i type in a contact name... i dont get auto suggestion as i did before. all settings are the same but for some reason i have to backspace to get my contact suggestion.. for example if i want to send a text to "Jason Smith" with 0.13 i could type j and all j's would come up as suggestion and would narrow down as i continue to type in letters.. now i type in j-a-s-o-n.. etc and nothing happens unless i backspace a letter.. then i get my suggestion.. any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated .. thanks

Unfortunately this problem has been documented in the main PCM Keyboard thread here and on the PocketCM.com forum with no resolution. Your choice is to use V14 and use the backspace or install V13 and live with the beta expiration notice anytime you restart or change input methods.

We have requested V13 with no expiration, but the developer doesn't want to do that.

2manyphones,

First of all thanks for the great skins!!

I hope you or somebody else can help me out with the following problem on my HTC Touch:

Because of the bigger height of your skins, the autosuggest box (for email and sms) appears aligned with the top of the screen. With smaller keyboard skins (like the default pcm ones), the autosuggest box is aligned with the top of the keyboard itself.

With your skins (and also with other large keyboard layouts like Resco uses), the suggestion box is placed over the start bar. So far so good. However: after I have used a full screen application like the camera or Tomtom and go back to using the keyboard, the suggestion box is not on top of the start bar anymore, but partly hidden behind it!!

The top two names are hidden by the start bar, and these are of course the most important ones if I refine the names list. This makes the suggestion list completely useless
After a soft reset everything is ok again, but as I use Tomtom several times a day this is a big problem for me!

Do you have any idea how I can make the suggestion box appear on top again of the start bar after a full screen application? Or is there perhaps a tweak to reposition the box directly above the keyboard instead of at the top of the screen? I've searched in every forum I could find, but nothing..

Hope you can help,

Thanks,

Marc

I have Dutty's ROM on my Tilt and when I tried to get the latest 2many skins/layout installed, I lost all of my key skins and don't know how to select a skin. All I have is an ugly layout with letters and no graphics. When I go to options and all tabs that are available I see nowhere to select skins. Do I need to rename the 2many file names in program files/pcm keyboard folder in order to use them? Please help.

Assumptions or suggestions:
1. You have installed PCM Keyboard V14 on the device (not sure if Dutty's ROM has it cooked in)
2. You have unzipped my skin folder and put the layout and skin files in program files/PCM keyboard.
3. Go into settings, input, select PCM Keyboard from drop down (if it isn't there, there is a problem with the program and you should restart and install it again). Then press options to select the PCM keyboard skin and layout.

This keyboard doesn't look right in my Sprint Diamond. I am using both the eng iphone12 layout and the iphone black skin, but the keys are widely spaced with the letters off to the right side.

I'm pretty brand new at this so please forgive if this is trivial:
I have downloaded the zip to my storage card/program files, tried to extract it as well but it seems it does not come up when im looking for the skins in 'options', i have reset a few times, but it seems it doesnt want to install, like the original cab pcmkeyboard program, that just installed as soon as you clicked on it. can you please tell me how to install. im using v.14 on tilt. thank you
