View Full Version : Tilt - No Service

So I have a Tilt and I'm having a problem that is becoming more and more frustrating.

Usually my reception is great. I have a comm manager installed that lets me switch between 3G and Edge and I have it on edge most of the time to conserve battery (3g coverage in my area isn't the best). In any case, no matter what mode I am in, sometime the phone randomly seems to say No Service (even when I am outside, and it happens in all areas). It then takes forever to re-acquire a signal. The issue is only resolved by a soft reset, after which I will regain 5 bars.

To recap, Ill have no service while outside, soft reset and then have 5 bars. How can I either get the phone to re-acquire a signal or prevent this from happening? It is making me miss phone calls all the time. Sometimes, Ill have no service for over an hour, soft reset and then have 5 bars.

I am running the stock rom.

Help.

I had this issue with my 8525 and I had to have the phone replaced because it was defective.

My tilt has done this one time a few days ago. Kept getting no service in my home. I did a soft reset and all has been well since then. I hope it doesnt become a regular thing because usually the service in my home is quite good.

The service in my home is very good as well. Right now my Tilt is next to me and displaying 4/5 bars. Sometimes, when I come in from work though it says no service. I can put the phone near my window and it will sit with no service UNTIL I soft reset it. Once I soft reset I get 4 bars again.

If I try to make calls, run activesync or anything while it says no service the phone still does not ever find a signal. A soft reset is always required. This happens about 2-3 times per day as I move between home, work, and various other locations.

Did anyone ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue, and don't know how to fix it. This one came from ebay and was all ATT with HTC Duffy. Any ideas?

This was happening to me and I got a warranty replacement from AT&T. I was running Dutty's official 6.1, but I am going to flash back to original ROM and see if it still does it to try and resolve if this is a hardware or software issue.

I have had this problem too, and have no explanation for it. When the phone gets into this "No Service" state of mind, it eats batteries too. It gets very warm to the touch. All of this bad behavior goes away as soon as I do a soft reset.

This used to happen alot (1-2 times a day) wen I was using SPB Mobile Shell 2.1. I removed that and now the need has dropped to once every third day or so. No idea what is causing this, but it sure is annoying.

Same. Return to service center and mainboard replacement required.

Got my warranty phone in. First I did hard reset on Dutty's Official 6.1 ROM to see if it was a settings issues, still lost service. Then followed instructions on the post to return ROM and bootloader to ATT shipped versions, and phone still lost service after about an hour. So I grabbed my new warrantly phone after being reassured that it was not a software issue, reflashed Dutty's Official 6.1 & radio, and unpacked my Sprite backup, and was back in business.

Just a word to the wise, if you are restoring to a different device, the email settings don't transfer properly (supposedly they are tied to the MAC address of the particular device). Just deselect the email portion of the sprite restore and re-set-up manually and everything seems fine.

I have this same problem too. What can I do if I don't have a warranty anymore? Will they still fix my phone or will I need to buy insurance??

When I've had this problem in the past (although rarely) I've tried instead to go into flight mode and then back into regular mode and 4 out of 5 times it solved the problem. Since I've installed the "Band" hidden menu on the phone settings, I've never had this problem again: It's switched to "GSM" and "Auto" (I don't use 3G usually).

If you have the problem randomly and not from just coming out of a "no-reception" zone (elevator, subway, middle of the wild) you should probably have the phone serviced. If your issue is just after coming out of a dead zone, good chances the phone is just having issues being identified by the closest GSM/UMTS towers...

I've added to my reply post the "Enable "Band" page" for Tilt original roms CAB so you don't have to look for it elsewhere on the forum. Go to "Settings >> Phone" you'll see the "Band" option at the bottom with the other options...

Makes two of us. I have a unit that was purchased new three months ago. On Monday at midnight it lost signal and was unable to get a signal back (it would get a signal for 15-20 seconds every two minutes and then loose it again). I used CommMgrPro to foce it into 2g mode, but any time I let it go into 3G mode it looses its signal.

i think i just encountered the same problem...
I live in Japan, so using a Softbank sim card. i switched the radio off (airline mode) while i was flying to hawaii. Switched it back on, and it worked fine in hawaii (global roaming). I switched it off again to return to japan. once i landed...No Service...searching...No Service...etc. I havent tried reflashing or flashing another rom/radio, but that is next step. phone was an ebay purchase, so cant cry to ATT for replacement. I hope all is not lost...

Same for me! My phone lost signal 3 days ago (did the 15-20 seconds out of every two minutes thing). I found out that AT&T turned on 3G in my area at that exact same time, I had never been in a 3G coverage area prior to then. After installing the "Enable Band Page" cab and forcing it into GSM mode I can now use the phone in GSM/Edge again. If I re-enable the 3G it looses signal immediately. Wonder why they advertise the Tilt as a 3G phone if it will not work in 3G mode?

Two things: 1 - try POWERING down the device, not soft reset. Or simply remove the battery.
2 - Try changing the radio you're using. If you're on the 6.0 ROM, try using 1.27.17.11. If you're on 6.1, try one of the newer Niki radios or anything else.

Not sure if this is relevant but this is what happened to me and what i found out. I formerly had an original iphone, i then got a tilt on ebay and just put my iphone sim into the tilt and everything was fine.

A few weeks ago att stated that people with 3g ihpones but still on old plans would have there data plans changed or something along those lines.

Yesterday my phone went ape nuts. I couldnt dial out or recieve calls, when it did work it would hang up within seconds. I went to my ATT account and it showed me having a tilt instead of an iphone so I thought this may have something to do with it. So for some reason i decided to disable 3g, then all of the sudden everything worked fine. I assume that ATT is somehow blocking 3g band or something which is causing my phone to go nuts.

Not sure if this is relevant but i hope it helps in troubleshooting.
