View Full Version : Stripped carrier-specific install: More recovered memory than meets the eye?

Thanks chiefly to tmknight and some others, I now have a clean install of the official 2.25ATT release without the extra ATT-specific applications junk that I don't want. This has saved about 6MB of space in my Storage Memory, which was the point.

But is that all?

There is, of course, the Extended ROM sitting there now, visible, read/writable. The siren-song calls...

If I use this space, I've gained an additional ~6MB of space for "stuff", totalling 12MB net-net over the stock ATT install. If the carrierDB.pxp file can also be deleted after install is completed, this gives up another 2MB or so. I've deleted it, and will see if anything goes bad.

So, here's what I plan to do: Clear out the Extended ROM, name it "Extra" (a simple registry key string), and use it for installing programs I would have otherwise installed on my SD card. I'll switch to the SD card after I've filled this up.

Advantage: Like main storage, this Extended ROM bit of flash is always there, so you don't have to deal with lost functionality when you change SD cards for any reason.

The only negative I can think of is that hard resets become more complicated without the cappackage.pxp and carrierDB.pxp files in a folder named "partition" on the eROM. This just means that after a hard reset, the rom will need to be unlocked, those files put back, and then another hard reset. So, actually using this space shouldn't really be an issue other than complicating the reset procedure.

Thoughts?

I don't want to monopolize this subject since I'm still learning myself, but here's my comment. Correct, I use the ExtROM to install as many apps as I can fit before I go to the ROM. I only use the SD card for TomTom. Bear in mind that some apps simply will not install to the ExtROM (e.g. google maps), so what you would then need to do is move the files to the ExtROM and update the links. I actually only "install" 5 apps and the rest I copy back to the desired location after hard reset. I have a registry file with all my desired settings, a folder structure and files saved to SD that I simply copy back to the Device (ROM and ExtROM) and I'm sailing with minimal manual config. I haven't had much luck with the backup programs so this has served me well.

I have modified my cappackage to mount the ExtROM at hard reset which really helps simplify this process - have a look at my posted cappackage in the mod cappackage thread.

Cheers!

Completely OT: I referred to you erroneously as "Tim" earlier... was I right? ;)
