Open a blank document or try creating a new emai8l. When you have the hardware keyboard active, press and hold the key */XT9. A menu will pop. Select ABC and then XT9 will be disabled.

Hi Kabayan.. also from the Philippines here. XT9 really is a pain.. the only solution I found was to use pcm keyboard.. rendering the hw keypad useless.
Language is irrelevent, most fields default to that sodding XT9, its getting reallly tedious to set input method to 'abc' every single time I want to compose a sms...
I played around with SIP reg settings but the device did not boot on next soft reset (hung on HTC flash intro) and required a hard reboot - so I am not eager to fool around further.

funny coz i bought this device thinking that id get the best of both worlds,a pocket pc and the old way of texting messages(i sort of missed that being a ppc user for the past 3 years),but xt9 has really annoyed the shayt out of me so i just put this otherwise sweet little baby up for sale.

I would think that changing the keys under
HKLM\software\tegic\eT9\Sip\DefaultInputModule from 1 to 2
HKLM\software\tegic\eT9\IME\DefaultInputModule from 1 to 2
would set the regular abc as default rather than the et9

Im getting used to pressing and holding the * before typing.. a complete waste of 2-3 seconds everytime I send an SMS. And unfortunately, all the good ROM cookers and developers here does not use a Niki so I guess a solution of using a cooked ROM is still far ahead.

Well here is how to turn it off at least for the old default WM5/6 keyboard, doesn't work on the Touch keyboard
It's great for me as I use the WM5/6 keyboard as my default personally rather than the Touch keyboard, I like how little of the screen it covers and plus I can go so fast with my stylus.
Go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\ and change the key "XT9SupportMSSip" from value "1" to "0"

this sort of works... it disables the xt9, but on the hardware keyboard, each time you tap a key, it writes the character, so you can only type half the characters (on the 20 key version) :(
--- edit ---
My guess is that we need a modified et9ime.dll, but i don't have the skills to do such a thing...

This is the workaround for my Hermes when Schaps included XT9 in his beta 2 ROM.
You need to edit the registry:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software delete Tegic folder
2. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID delete 2 folders beginning with:
{198D503A-EFFE-....}
{62B00599-25D2-....}
First option switches it off.
Second one deletes it from SIP list
!!! I don't have your phone and therefore I cannot confirm whether in option 2 you have the same folders. I don't remember what was in them. But possibly it was something named Tegic.
Just use FIND option in a registry editor and you'll find it.
Enjoy

So far none of the suggestions here work. THe suggestions found here completely disables alphabetical input and only allows numeric input.
Best thing I could suggest right now is to use Pocket CM (Contacts not keyboard). The SMS feature of PCM defaults to ABC rather than XT9. I suggest using 0.15, the later versions crashes often.

I'm kinda sure this is not what most of you want, but I installed a program called POCKETCM. It kinda manages contacts and sms! With it I can write SMS without the predefenition of XT9 ;)

Hi Guys,
some of yuo will hate me for this:
My new XDA Star (O2 branded Nike) comes with abc mode as standard for the HW-keyboard in all windows. And now the really funny thing: I am really searching to get xt9 as standard since it works very well for german. Hence we have the same problem and perhaps some comparing of reg-files will bring a soultion

that Is not true. Actionscreen --> sms --> highlight the message field and the Star will also change to XT9. Should be exactly the same as on the Touch dual

Forgive me, but i don't believe you. Double check it again, it defaults to abc on some textboxes like name entry, website entry, etc. But on SMS and everything else that you can type a paragraph into, defaults to XT9.
If you really have it the other way around, I wish we could just trade our handsets... LOL :D

Hm,
you are right: For textboxes like concern or address it defaults to abc, for SMS it defaults to xt9.
Sorry for giving hope :-/.
But nevertheless this could be interesting:
In my registry I found the following key:
HKLM\software\tegic\eT9\IME\TextInputMode
This Key influences the default behaviour for creating Notes (not SMS or contact unfortunately) 0:abc 1:xT9
I am pretty sure that there is a similar Entry for SMS contacts and all others as well, the question is just which one

i just bought the touch dual with the Greek Rom (although i use the English settings) and i found completely stupid the fact that you cannot change the xt9 default setting or even disabled it completely!!!
I also asked the Greek HTC support team for a solution but no one has replied yet although reading from your replies there is nothing that we can do. Also none of the registry entries did the trick
Why on earth you cannot change the setting is a complete mystery!!

The previous cab that i found only displayed the first letter of the key (from ABC key it only displayed the A)
Can anyone else confirm that this works ?

Thank you for your inquiry regarding disabling XT9 on your HTC Touch Dual device.
you can disable XT9 on your device by:
1 - Click on Start and then Settings
2 - On the Personal tab, click on Input
3 - Select Touch Keyboard on the Input method drop down list
4 - Click on Options
5 - Click on XT9 Settings
6 - Uncheck all the options

They're not very helpful when I said the steps didn't really do anything.
I am sorry to hear that the previous troubleshooting steps did not resolve the problem. Unfortunately, that is the only procedure available for disabling XT9. What you are encountering is the hard coded predictive spelling feature of the Touch series. It was included to make typing as fast as possible. With some work and some patience, it will hopefully improve your typing experience.
I hope somebody will finally know how to eliminate XT9
Cheers

the cab one did.
sorry I havent seen my wife to check, will let you guys know friday night when I see if if all the buttons work. but I'm pretty sure they do.

Try this, i removed it on my G900 and works perfect. I don't think it works exactly the same for you, but at least you have some direction to go in.
Remove key {73AB106C-A726-484B-b610-be3e1cf39821} from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Remove [HKLM\Software\Tegic] Key
Delete the \windows\programs\tegic folder
Edit [HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\layouts\e001 0409]
Ime File : \windows\xt9ime.dll change to Ime File :\windows\compime.dll
and
Layout Text : XT9 IME change to Layout Text : COMP IME
Edit [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip]
Change the DWORD TurnOffAutoDeploy from 1 to 0.
REBOOT!
Looks like a few things are in different places on the niki:
Remove key {73AB106C-A726-484B-b610-be3e1cf39821} from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Not present
Delete the \windows\programs\tegic folder
Not there
Ime File : \windows\xt9ime.dll change to Ime File :\windows\compime.dll

Can we grab that ime from anywhere?

"Ime File : \windows\xt9ime.dll change to Ime File :\windows\compime.dll", instead of xT9 IME i have "eT9 IME"

Ok, so about what that cab does.
I can confirm that the key pad still works... however...
I can only get the primary keys to work... ie <ALT> doesnt seem to work.
so you get all your numbers 1234567890, Return ... and the letters on the left and right side.
not sure why <ALT> doesnt work....
my wife uses the stylus all the time so it isnt a big deal. turning off XT9 was worth losing the letter typing on the key pad....

I'v tested the cab on my touch dual with german rom
the cab disables letter typing on the hardware keypad (only numbers possible)
The screen keypad layout with @.?, / abc / def / etc. was also disabled.

I guess there really isn't any for now.
It looks like it isn't just mere editing of the registry, we may need a certain different dll that will handle the keypad of the Niki. Much like a different keypad driver.. or if there is anyone knowlegeable enough to hex edit the current dll to default to abc instead of xT9.
Unfortunately, the hardcore developers aren't using a Niki. :(

yes you have to use it all the time...
about the shortcomings, 1stly you cant scroll thru the msgs using dpad. 2ndly when replying to a msg you need to touch the screen to start typing. 3rdly its so much harder to put contacts into the "to" field coz it doesnt have the predictive capabilities of the built in sms app. there are several other things that need refining in this app but as i said overall i prefer to use it now coz it got rid of xT9!

Open a blank document or try creating a new emai8l. When you have the hardware keyboard active, press and hold the key */XT9. A menu will pop. Select ABC and then XT9 will be disabled.
-Feaps
It doesn't stay disabled tho. Seems to default back whenever. I used to hate xt9 to the max, but I've been getting used to it since I can't seem to get rid of it anyway. Don't know why that selection doesn't hold. It was that way on my nike and now my neon is same way.
EDIT: @tacia, Thanks for the link to the cab file. I tried as others to get the hang of xt9 and found it to just be to frustrating. I know some peeps love it, I'm just not one of those. This is way better. btw it's a neon I have and it works great. I wish someone would come up with a cab for the keypad lite to be adjustable for longer on time. I'm not comfortable fooling with the registry settings yet.
EDIT#2: I think I read previously a post that said the windows live search function box when typed in using the hard kpad would produce only numbers. Well, I can verify that mine is that way also. I am happily using my kpad with no xt9 sudden default, but this is a def bug. Using the virtual kpad is o.k. tho. Not that big a deal. The trade off is def worth it IMHO.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\IME
CarrierDefaultTextMode=dword:0
(0 for ABC / 1 for XT9)
So I think maybe that's the only edit you have to make to change from xT9 to ABC mode. I just thought I'd mention it if somebody doesn't want to install the CAB file.
