Thanks for the response. I had incidentally installed 1.16 because first I think higher version is better, so can I downgrade to 1.15? If yes, can you share how to do that. And is there any way to be superCID?

You should read the 1st post to know what to do for install 1.15, and yes u can do it with 1.16 already installed.

This problem is well known and covered to the bone...
Nonetheless, I will help you.

Unpack the exe (in you have winrar installed) like this:
rightclick on the exe and click extract (or something with a similar meaning).

I know the OS ROM is the WM5, WM6 etc...

The Radio ROM is for the antenna, GSM or watever radio device inside the phone.

The SPLs... I have totally no idea and I'm having trouble finding information about them.

I just wanted to convert this Chinese touch dual to English. Been reading the threads but I'm really lost on where to start. :(

It is in chinese because it is a chinese OS rom.
You must flash a new OS ROM.

But 1st you need to install hardspl, to do so just follow the steps on 1st post of this thread. (If u have a niki model...)

The attached SSPL, USPL and HardSPL are based on the Nike shipped SPL v1.16
EDIT: HardSPL v.1.15 (MFG - manufacturing) with rtask support now added. I highly recommend to install this version !!!

1. download the attached files

4. copy sspl-1.16-nike.exe to your device and run it (usb cable must be connected!)
5. after a few seconds "USB" appears on the display
6. unplug and replug the usb cable
(OPTIONAL, better to skip it! step 7. if you only want to test the sspl try flashing the attached splash screen by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-splash-niki)
8. you can now flash the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki
9. after installing the hardspl you can flash any rom (rom cook project here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355397))

Note:
The USPL is not a "HardSPL" which means it gets overwritten when you flash a full ROM. You have to run the SSPL if you want to flash any ROM again.
The HardSPL is never overwritten which in case of flashing trouble is a great insurance. Should you want to flash another SPL or USPL you must run the SSPL.

Important:
Use at your own risk! I'm not responsible for any damage to your device caused by using the attached files.

Hi kabayan, you don't really need to know what those acronyms mean.. they may not even be acronyms but rather just variable names that doesn't really mean anything understandable. :D

As long as you follow the instructions (by the letter) on the first post, you should be ok on uprading your ROM.

After that my phone booting to WM, where I must do "first initilazion" (~touching little cross on different places on screen, time and place settings, instalation some HTC packages, ...). After that everything looks like before flash.

When I try flash WM61 ROM from tom_codon, I get Error 202.

niki is the model id on the phone.. the code name for the sake of spoken terms should be nike.

After I read all 52 pages of thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364335 (Release Niki Project Rom v1.0 WM6.1 CE OS 5.2.19716 ( Build 19716.1.1.0 )), I have found "secret" with unpacking exe file :-/.

I don't understand, why such valueable information isn't somewhere at the top of the thread or with ROM file. Why I must read 52 pages long thread...

I want to upgrade my Orange UK touch dual to the Niki project but really need a point by point list of what to do.

Still unclear and appreciate this is basic stuff for you guys. I am trying to update my touch dual to the Niki project. I am stuck at getting the Nike SSPL USPL HardSPLL to work through my lak of understanding. I follow the basic instructions:
1. download the attached files
2. REMOVE SIM and SD CARDS !!
3. connect usb cable
4. copy sspl-1.16-nike.exe to your device and run it (usb cable must be connected!)
5. after a few seconds "USB" appears on the display
6. unplug and replug the usb cable

I get to point 5 and onscreen of the phone I get a few coloured bars and USB at end which I guess is what it means. I then go to 8:
8. you can now flash the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki
this cannot work as I have no Actvesync connection so I reset the phone and get activesync running.
I then run ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki (I assume this is the right one as there seems to be a few flavours included)?
I get no option at this point to load hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh - it just wants to update my ROM down to version 1.00.000.0. through the PDAPhone Rom update utility 1.31.61.10

PLease help I am obviously missing something.

Further info - none of the non MS programs run, nothing happens some report not trusted certificate, I therefore did a hard reset, and all seems okay. As I have only rmanaged to un sspl-1.16-nike.exe what has this actually done.
Any additional advice on saving original ROM and ways of reversing if I get a problem would be much appreciated.

THanks for that and yes it was a school boy error, though I had tried so many things I had forgotten that.
THe issue now is that one you run ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki
I get the various splash screens on my PC, click next each time until I get to the point where it says it will take 10 mins HOWEVER at no point does it ask me or give me an option to select the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh where does this come up, perhaps its after the final warning, I have'nt yet gone that far, I expected it to allow a dialog alongside the ROM version it displays that you want to upgrade to OR perhaps the new ROM should sit in a specified directory.
Appreciate any assistance.

You will have to disable the password on your phone.
This makes it simpler.
Keep the phone connected with activesync.
Read the first post very carefully and go step by step.

I have done everything perfect up till step 6: unplug and replug USB cable, when i try to do step 8, run ROMupdateUtility, not only the update firmware shows version 1.00 and it only took my few sec to complete the update. after the unit restart, it' goes bak to the original WM OS,

that means u did the 1.16 update not the 1.15 one...

as i said last time it is because you have run the sspl again. you run sspl 1.16 it shows spl 1.16 .
once you have run the rom update with the hard spl thats it job done. running sspl again will overrite it
if you want a different os you need to install the hardspl then you need to find your new rom and run the rom update again to install the new rom.

Note:
The USPL is not a "HardSPL" which means it gets overwritten when you flash a full ROM. You have to run the SSPL if you want to flash any ROM again.
The HardSPL is never overwritten which in case of flashing trouble is a great insurance. Should you want to flash another SPL or USPL you must run the SSPL.

if you already have version 1 on there, you probably have the hard spl on your phone. if so, just proceed and flash the new beniki rom.

I tried to follow the instructions but I can't get far.

After I have connected the USB cable I start the sspl-1.16-nike.exe from my touch dual (USB cable connected). The screen with the 3 colors appears shortly but no USB massage. After that the screen changes to the white screen saying "loading ..." After that nothing else happens and I have to do a reboot to come back.

I tried this both on a Vista System with the mobile center installed and on a XP Media Center Ed. 2005 with ActiveSync 4.5 installed. Any time the same behavior. Any advice how to go on?

Any comment is appreciated.

Finally problem is solved. I forgot to remove SD Card. After that I managed to update with XP Media Center.

1. download the attached files - Success

My HTC Touch Dual (Nike) is in French and I would like to change it to english:
After reading many posts about upgrade, I started upgrading but I stuck at
at step 6 . I removed and plugged usb cable but nothing changes.
I tried to run ROMUpdate utility but it got error 260 . Could not find device.
I had to reset device and if I run again ROM utiliy , it says
your image is 1.31.7109 do you want to 1.00.00.0
my system info :

Rom Version : 1.31.71.09
Radio Version : 1.58.16.27
Proto : 26.61.30.03H

SPL is only 256kb big, it only needs some secs.

If you doesnt see any Rom Infos in your RUU Program ... ignor it! Only the Value in the SPL AK Bootloader are importent!!!

I hope someone can help every time I run hardSPL(i have tried 3 versions) on my Nike, I get the continue screen which I confirm and then.... black screen and Bluetooth LED is permanently on. At this stage only removing the battery will allow a reboot.

everytime i try to make an update using sspl and hardspl, for
example:

i try to install the 2 boot screen on my htc touch dual as described here:

So i run then the "CustomRUU.exe to update new Splash Screen for niki device".
All went fine, 100%, the device restart but now i'm again at
the bootloader with same:

NIKI100
SPL-1.15.Hard
CPLD-4
so after a while a "new installation" of the ROM start again and i have to reinstall all...*sigh*

which are the correct steps if i wanna flash for example a new radio or another tool without reinstalling again the ROM from the begining?

Are all the same weight of 600 ko and when I try to decomp. them an error message says: compressed file not valid or corrupted.

So no way to go on with the process...

I thought that after this, i dont need to do the same again, i mean

Then i try to flash the bootscren image, and when i do it,

After I've restored this I got the SmartMobility with banner "not for sale" (that is not suitable to send phone to assistance) and then "HelloNasty" screenshot from a previous ROM... is there any way to solve this issues?

Up till here i have absolutely no problems, after this i connect the usb cable to my computer again running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki. However thats where i dont understand the instruction about:

"now flash the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh" by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki

because i can only run ROMupdateUtility.exe and follow the instructions, i do as it tells me that its going to update my rom and then with in seconds its 100% complete. I know that i am missing a step and even though i have tried to the best of my abilities i have been unable to understand how to flash the hardslpl-1.15 mfg-nike.nbh i simply dont know wt that means.

If someone can make me understand i would love to donate money to this site because i see that ppl over here are really helpful. Thanks:confused::confused::mad:

I'm new here at XDA-developers and i tried to update my HTC touch dual with vodafone lock and first tried the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.zip (101.1 KB, 7280 views), but nothing is happening... my display says NIKI SPL-1.16.000 CPLD-4 and there is USB or serial when i connect or disconnect my USB cable.

I really want to update my HTC with the Tom_Niki_Project_v2.1.3_WWE...

Can anybody help me with this?

I get the test only not for sale then it freezes at the next screen of 'smart mobility' - then computer cant obtain info from the phone as its stuck in the particular section

The attached SSPL, USPL and HardSPL are based on the Nike shipped SPL v1.16
EDIT: HardSPL v.1.15 (MFG - manufacturing) with rtask support now added. I highly recommend to install this version !!!

1. download the attached files
2. REMOVE SIM and SD CARDS !!

4. copy sspl-1.16-nike.exe to your device and run it (usb cable must be connected!)
5. after a few seconds "USB" appears on the display
6. unplug and replug the usb cable
(OPTIONAL, better to skip it! step 7. if you only want to test the sspl try flashing the attached splash screen by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-splash-niki)
8. you can now flash the hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh by running ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki
9. after installing the hardspl you can flash any rom (rom cook project here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355397))

Note:
The USPL is not a "HardSPL" which means it gets overwritten when you flash a full ROM. You have to run the SSPL if you want to flash any ROM again.
The HardSPL is never overwritten which in case of flashing trouble is a great insurance. Should you want to flash another SPL or USPL you must run the SSPL.

el_boda - There is no problem, in Bootloader mode ActiveSync can't synch with device. Just replug cabel and start flashing

In 8 step you need put this file to flash folder.
uspl means it will be deleted after fullrom flashing
hardspl - it will never deleted by rom flashing

Ok my friend i make this tutorial as simple it can be to you follow the steps to unlock your HTC NIKI-100 hope this will healp you here is the steps i did i make 7 NIKIs just like i rote here just follow if i can healp more or radio you whant just let me know plz im glad for healp you guys here you go;


Copy to your phone the (ssplpro-1.16nike) he will move to 1.15,
The program will be on the phone, run it the phone will boot you will se SPL 1.16 JUMP, now run the program in folder; (Flash-hardspl-Niki, and run ROMUpdateUtility.exe ) but dont forget to change the

(hardspl-1.16mfg-nike.nbh by this (hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.nbh) in the folder.

Wen its done you leave the phone to restart remove the USB cable phone and connect again to see if it is in
SPL.1.15HARD to see this put the phone in boot mode and see if it is, if all went ok
now put the phone on normal mode connect to pc and in folder STEP1 run this NikiCustomRUU.exe let it finish and
leave the phone restart if he wont power up you turn on , ok now after you finished put the HTC in bootmode in
ActiveSync right-click activeync icon and uncheck "Allow USB connections" from Connection Settings
and run the program's folder STEP2 Niki-supercid.exe it will open a window DOS if ran
ok he will say this:

says that there will appear to unlock the code but that does not appear as if it was all right on top.
and now restart and put a card from another network providor and is unlocked to connect the phone

he says on top of phone SECURITY UNLOCKED is 100%.

I think we need a new USPL or HardSPL as the new official WM61 ROM comes with spl 1.22.000. Using the new SPL, the WM61 ROM performs much better. At least that's what i noticed.

I really would like to give it a try...but i'm quiet sure that once spl 1.16 will be back, I won't be able to flash the upgrade again because of the CID (my dual is from Orange France).

There's a lot of people who have not been able to flash the upgraded rom without HardSpl 1.15 MFG, so I don't know...

One more thing for everybody who has a bricked device, e.g a solution if SPL or radio patching went wrong somehow...

If you have the three colored bootscreen and see that SPL is still the original 1.15,1.16 or 1.22 ( spl patch didn´t work ) - You can get your device back to life:

1) Deny Active Sync USB Connection in Active Sync Settings
2) Download MTTY 1.42
3) Connect MTTY 1.42 with USB (button to the right)
4) Press "Enter" 2 Times
5) type: "boot" without quotes and press the enter button again.

Voila, if there is still some kind of WM on your device, it will boot !

You need to run sspl on your phone first and then flash the 1.15 spl

I was wondering if people who use the 1.22 hardspl could post saying if they feel the 1.22 spl has changed the performance of their nike in anyway (for better or for worse).

I am also looking at how wifi works in the spl and eventually in the radio.

Is the niki wifi team still active? Could any of you give me any pointers to prevent any duplicated work.

I know from comparing the nike spl to other MSM7200 spl's that the code used to load wifi firmware is missing in the nike spl. I'm going to work on porting the wifi loading code into the niki 1.22 spl. I guess the wifi still needs to be enabled in the Radio and the OS will need wifi drivers. I don't even know if there is any wifi firmware at 0x50100000 on niki devices.

Not noticed any, in fact I'd say it's the opposite - I find that I'm recharging less. Whether that's ROM, radio, SPL or a combination I'm not sure

My battery lasted all weekend with 6.1 htc rom and spl1.22.
It used to drain really fast with wm6 and orange UK rom

I must say, I'm not noticing any major difference with HardSPL 1.22. (the SPL was the only thing I changed)

Battery life is still good - definitely not worse than before, but hard to say if it's better - I've never managed to flatten mine in recent times anyway.

Boot time is also hard to pick, as I'm still using a custom super-lite rom which booted damn fast anyway.

Haven't changed radio recently - still on 1.65.29.

My verdict: No enourmous pressure to upgrade to SPL1.22, but it certainly won't hurt anything. If you're coming from a stock rom you'll notice far bigger improvements by upgrading to the right Radio and a suitable custom ROM than you will from just the SPL.

I think the biggest battery life savings I had recently were when I upgraded to radio 1.65.29 (oddly - 1.71 won't flash on my device - consistently suffers a communication error - but anyway).

Ok, this may sound really stupid but i have to ask .....

I flashed the 1.22 HARD SPL this weekend and ever since I did that, I've noticed that my alarm does not work properly. I'm using the normal WM6.1 alarm, no special software.

What I've noticed is that the alarm will ring once as expected but when I snooze it, all subsequent alarms only vibrate with no audible! This only happens with certain rings, not all of them. Very strange symptom.

The only thing I've changed on the phone is the HARD SPL.

Can someone test the snooze on theirs? I'm using the LILY ROM (see my signature).

I have tried upgrading to WM6.1 - on 2 Onage branded phones - I first used SSPL 1.16 Nike - and was then able to run the update on the first phone. The 2nd phone reset at about 9% and I get the boot loader screen.

I have tried running flash-hardspl-niki but it just does nothing - and running the upgrade for WM6.1 gets to 1% and then resets to the bootloader - I think because it cannot upgrade an unofficial Orange Rom without SSPL.

I am under the impression I need an official Orange UK Rom to get back to where I started - anyone have it available or is there another way to get this fixed?

Hi guys,
Here's what I did (something very stupid) and what happened :

I have a NIKI100 which has simlock and HAD a vodafone dutch splash screen with original rom and radio.

I followed the instructions and managed to flash a new rom with
RUU_Nike_HTC_NLD_2.09.404.1_Radio_NikeMR_1.65.28.2 5_signed_Ship.exe

I still had SIMlock so I started over the procedure with Niki-SuperCID
Here I made the STUPID mistake to hardspl while I FORGOT to SSPL first!
so this is what happened next: rom update halted at 95% I got error and began
recovery. (1) Ever after this I get ERROR[262] whatever I try and update halts at 0%.

Here I made the STUPID mistake to hardspl while I FORGOT to SSPL first!
so this is what happened next: rom update halted at 95% I got error and began
recovery. (1) Ever after this I get ERROR[262] whatever I try and update halts at 0%.

1) Kill activesync processes: Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Windows to bring up Task Manager. Kill wcescomm.exe and WCESMgr.exe (by selecting the task on the processes tab, and clicking the End Process button below)

2) Phone needs to be POWER + Record + Pen Reset and on Serial/USB screen. COnnect it to the PC, and it should show USB, with the backlight remaining off.

3a) Run mtty1.42.exe. (or the attached mtty application)
b) Select USB from first list (where COM1 is displayed. Don't press USB button). If USB (or a list item containing USB) isn't in the list, then you have't connected to the PC properly.

(Leave default parameters: 8 bits / Flow Control NONE / Stop bits 1 / Parity None / Local Echo No)

c) Click OK

3) Run following commands:

5. type "set 14 0" without the quotes to tell bootloader to boot the OS after reset.

The attached SSPL, USPL and HardSPL are based on the Nike shipped SPL v1.16
EDIT: HardSPL v.1.15 (MFG - manufacturing) with rtask support now added. I highly recommend to install this version !!!

1. download the attached files

The USPL is not a "HardSPL" which means it gets overwritten when you flash a full ROM. You have to run the SSPL if you want to flash any ROM again.
The HardSPL is never overwritten which in case of flashing trouble is a great insurance. Should you want to flash another SPL or USPL you must run the SSPL.

Important:
Use at your own risk! I'm not responsible for any damage to your device caused by using the attached files.

I downloaded all the files attached to a folder. Follow steps 1 through 6. After finishing the stage 6, I tried to install this ROM "RUU_Nike_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.1_Radio_NikeMR_1.65.28.2 5_signed_Ship.exe."

Before this file is just 1%. After the last attempt, managed to reach the 15% but gave error.

I tried "ROMUpdateUtility.exe from flash-uspl-niki". Do not start.

How can I relive my Nike?

My htc touch dual was previously locked with telstra until i did the hard reset (hold green and red + reset button) and now it works fine, but it is laggy due to all that extra crap like those applications the service provider puts on. i was doing this rom update (to get rid of the extra stuff) and it was working fine until the last part where it said my device was incompatible with the update. I'm not sure why this is because i have met all the prereq's for it.

I am now using an optus simcard with it

If you want to upgrade to official ROM, then the process of HardSpl is not necessary.

What HardSPL does is create a 'permanent' form of SPL on the phone (hence Hard SPL), and is there so that no programs will overwrite it. This is installed as insurance if you flash the phone a lot, or want to use non official ROMs.

An alternative upgrade is SSPL (SoftSPL). This will update the SPL to whichever one you want, but it can be overwritten by another SSPL or HardSPL routine. Newer (or older) SSPL just needs to be flashed as required.

If you want to overwrite HardSPL, you need to use USPL first, followed by new HardSPL or SSPL. The latter is done in cases where you need to return the phone for warranty purposes etc.

Once HardSPL or SSPL in installed, you can flash your phone multiple times without needing to reflash the SPL with HardSPK or SoftSPL if the ROM you are using is compatible with this version.

You'll need HardSPL 1.22 if you want to use ROMS with radios greater than 1.64. This includes the latest official ROMS released by HTC. Hard 1.15 is good for the older ROMs, including the custom ROMs of Tom_Codon and Hello_Nasty.

Consider USPL and then Hard1.22 if you want to use the latest HTC ROMS or cooked ROMS.

i have it from the bootloader. Now i cant flash other Roms. Its without hardSPL.
I tried to flash other roms, but after 2 mins there comes a Problem with the Connection. But at the first time it saw good, then it stops by 15% and now im only in the Bootloader.

I tried to flash from SD, but ist hangs on Loading...

Please Help mee ;)

Hi all, 1st post.

I am a complete novice re unlocking phones let alone some of the other techie stuff that I have been reading all day yesterday.

Detail of my situation to avoid confusion:
I received an htc Touch Dual about a month ago, as a replacement for a different faulty phone. Just getting used to it, when my contract ended and due to watching pennies and not happy with Orange, I decided to get a PAYG sim. Doing this to work out just how much I can save compared to lengthy contrats.

Anyway, I have searched and read more posts than is healthy to no avail. Therefore I throw myself at your mercy please?

I have tried to follow the unlocking instructions but my phone sticks at the 'usb' screen, and I can't access it further. Keep having to take the battery out to turn it off too. Everything works still, even TomTom. But will not allow new sim.

Please please could someone take a few minutes to gently talk me through the process.

Right, I get to action 6. and my phone screen is red, green, blue, whote with SPL-1.16.Jump displayed.
I skipped step 7 as suggested.

Nothing happens.

My phone does not show in 'My Computer', and Actve Sync can't see it either.

By the way, I dowm=nloaded the zips to a folder on my PC desktop, and onaly copied the "sspl-1.16-nike.exe " to my phone, is that correct?

I am beginning to think that I am out of my depth tbh rling. I do appreciate your help, but having tried to follow some of the instructions am in a bit of a tizz now. I now have so many zip files on my desktop too, and 2 new folders that I created plus the original Active Sync folder!!

The ROM Update Utility encountered an ERROR even though the progress meter did appear on the phone, but froze.

If you really do think that I can be 'walked through' the process, then I would give it one more try, but otherwise, i would appreciate it if you wouldn't mind recommending someone who would be able to do it for me? It's a pity that no-one lives in the Southampton area on here or that you don't offer an over the phone service.

As I said, I am probably out of my depth, but at least have a better appreciation of the expertise that you guys have.

I am assuming that you have installed SSPL 1.16. Reading your posts above, it has been done already. All you need to do now is to flash the new HardSPL to the phone.

1. Download the attached file from this link for Hard SPL 1.15 Mfg for unlocking, you'll need the following 2 files:

Flash-Hardspl-Nike.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=64073&d=1199289995)

HardSPL-1.15Mfg-Nike.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=73353&d=1204286404)

You need the first file, as the HardSPL 1.15 file only has the nbh - the package to be flashed.

2. Unpack Flash-HardSPL-Niki.zip first into a folder of your choice

3. Delete the file HardSPL-1.16-nike.nbh from here.

4. Unpack HardSPL-1.15Mfg-Nike.zip into the same folder. This is then ready to flash HardSPL 1.15.

Running ROMupdateutility will flash the {whatever}.nbh file in the folder to your phone.

5. REMOVE SIM and SD CARDS !!

6. connect usb cable, and make sure Activesync connects to phone.

7. Run ROMupdateutility.exe on the PC. This should start the flash procedure.

8. Once it reach the end, the phone will have HardSPL installed. Yippee!


You can proceed to unlocking the phone.

If you want to update to a new HardSPL, eg HardSPL 1.22, you will need to flash USPL 1.16 first, followed by a new HardSPL.

i have an HTC Touch Dual and some how i damaged the ROM or the some thing else and all i have is the tri-color screen nothing else and my phone is locked so i was advised to install the Hardspl 1.15 and that what brought me to here on this thread and i did understand the 9 steps but the problem is that i can not copy the sspl-1.16-nike.exe to the phone (i have tri-color screen) and i tried the flash-uspl-niki.zip and the flash-hardspl.zip after unzipping them but both of them stop responding on 0% and with connection error and start's the recovery system...

all i want is to unlock the phone and install the WM 6.1 ROM that i downloaded from the HTC official site.

what should i do ...
please help me i have no where else to go or any one to ask about this.

From your other thread. Flash the ROM that your carrier uses, and then start again. The phone is locked to all ROMs except those from your carrier.

From the begining this is my situation. I'll take it one step at a time, as I am pretty sure that I know where the sticking point now is.

I copy sspl-1.16-nike.exe onto my device, a simple copy and paste from it downloading to my PC desktop. When I 'explore' the device in ActveSync, it appears as a kermit the frog icon, but when I use 'file explorere on the device, it just appears as a teh exe file. I think this is all fine?

When I activate the .exe file using my touchscreen, it turns to the tricolour (usb) display. I unplug and reconnect the USB cable.

This is where I think the problem lies. Apart from a 'ding' on the PC, the device is invisible, both with ActiveSync and in My Computer. If I can not see the device I think that the RomUpdate Utility probably can't communicate either, hence the error message.

It's been a long weekend my friend, thanks for you patience.

Correct again. If this happens, you can disconnect the USB cable from your computer and reconnect (at the computer end, and not your phone end). If it still fails, reboot the computer.

This 3 colour screen, with USB at bottom is the standard bootloader for the phone. All ROM updates will drop it into this screen to allow flashing of new ROMs, radios, SPL etc. You are doing everything right, except that the PC will not disconnect and reconnect the USB and probable still waiting for the old connection to be reestablished.

I really was at a loss, but your continued support gave me the confidence to persevere. I have actually learnt quite a bit too, enough to have whetted my techno appetite. I am going to have a look at some of the applications that have been talked about on the forum, wish me luck. Fingers crossed I will be able to impress my I-phone owning mate at work now.

One thing that I am confused by, is the fact that when I first set up the unlocked phone, I was able to get the local weather forecast on the home screen, when I now click the refresh it, it tells me that I have no connection to GPRS or 3G! Maybe I changed something in my excitement?
