View Full Version : [UTIL]PointUI - Skins!

PointUI has been out for only one week, and skins are coming soon!
According to the developers of this free application, the theme management will simply use the same "Update Manager" to be able to download a new theme. They indicate that this new feature should be out to the general public in "a week or two".
More nice work by the Pointui Team. Here is the "Black" theme.

The Point UI or Home UI is one of the promising UIs that are around for a while. Great to have nice skins going along with it. The Team has been working hard to iron out some of the issues reported. I am looking forward to the next release in two weeks' time? Cheers:)

I totally agree that PointUI in its current avatar needs some changes... But it's the best UI I've seen floating around... May be soon, we'll have a better version... Keeping my fingers crossed... :)

This is interesting both both because the PointUI team is adding the skins and also because of the unique distribution method.
For forum users that do not use PointUI, there is a very simple integrated update method in the application that allows direct upgrades of the application. No cabs, no exe's, no registry edits. Really easy.
In this case it is used to add new features (Skins). This is a great concept and I can see that this will be used to easy add new features in the future.

i have installed PointUI for testing... but for real life usage, i think navigation within this UI is not user friendly enough... you will always think where to go back and how to go there.... but of cos, it is still very innovative, looking forward to their update in future.

I fully agree ... at any point in time you'll find yourself wondering what to do next ... I think the design should be more intuitive ... but other than that it's a wonderful idea!

well pointui is rly nice, step forward, skins are nice.
but to be honest, from my point of view there is awful lot of things to improve and implement to this kind of ui - don't flame me for saying this, but i rly don't know what are userw getting from using point ui in the state of ark in which it currently is, imho it's almost useless, just another gadget - when it will have it's own complete ui including messaging, contacts, calendar and dialpad etc etc - then it will be fantastic piece of software, but now? only another today skin (good one though, but still - when u have to get back 2 WM ui to write a message or to make a call, what the hell is it for?)
Don't get me wrong, i'm not blaming pointui itself, but the users which are making so big hubbab about it

I think they will go commercial.
For a freeware GUI Pointgui is just a great piece of software. When they will have implemented launcher, dialer and messaging and will have given us a bit more customizing opportunities Pointgui will beat all the other Mobile Shells of SPB or HTC.
But for now it's freeware and this is a enjoyable fact.

However, do not underestimate the dark side of software arena, it may get eaten up by those software giants....so there will not be any "beat the hell out of whoever" happening :o

Pointui is the best software that I have on my Cingular 8125. It works perfect... of course improvments can be made but as it is I find it very usefull. As somebody was wondering what use can one have of it, well here is mine: I can fully operate my phone with one hand while I am driving. That's a big plus for me...
I have one problem though, I have previously installed SPB Pocket Plus and Slide2Unlock Pro. So when all these 3 progs are running my memory goes down to 11-12 MB available, so if I am starting any other program that is memory hog, like a game my phone is really, really slow. I am thinking of uninstalling SPB Pocket Plus. What else can I do to improve the memory???
Thank you.

You can look at some of the cooked ROMs in these forums that can significantly increase available program memory. There is also an interesting thread in Xtriny Rom about an new MemoryManager program that may increase program memory by upto 30%!

I believe that it was designed to do that, meaning: when you slide your finger to the right, it takes you to the left and vice versa. But if you dont like it, what you can do is:
Go to setting (by pressing the icon next to the battery icon) and change the Slide Navigation to Object Navigation. By doing this you dont have to slide..

lepsyfou...the tsk file did not work properly on my Treo. If anyone else is having an issue with it (the background went white and the plugins were jacked up), just grab tweakui and change the bottom bar to jet black.
However, I'd rather not re-invent the background. Any chance you could post your version?

1- I have read about some issues in uninstallig... Now solved? I don't want to hard-reset (even if i have a backup with spb backup...)
2- Some screnshoots are in french... Depend on rom isn't it?

Here is some information / comments about localization to the French language:
http://forums.pointui.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=120
The French descriptions on the screen shots come from the programs installed and underlying version of that user's device. I am sure the developers are interested in multiple languages.
Look at all of the countries on this map that do not have English as a first language:

a TSK file is a theme file for your device If you want to run it you have to copy it into your windows folder and then select the theme from
Start>settings>today (it should be added to the list of themes)

Here is a little sidenote on PointUI. I am an ELFin user and at one point I ran a little test to check power consumption. SPB Mobile Shell which is my current UI is the most power consuming UI out there, i never really got to test PointUi 1.02b, but the previous released version consumed 100 mA less than SPB Mobile Shell.
The reason?, beats me, i try to thinks it's all thats going on behind the scenes, for I've place darker background, reduced, brightness and other stuff and still.

Never hold your breath waiting for a PointUI release but have you seen the new interface?
Check out the PointUI home page to see a blurred version of what I hope is on the way. It looks like HTC Home meets WM7 meets Manilla. There also seems to be an arch on the manilla slider as if it is circular, hmmmm.
I sure hope the clock can be skinned.
