Okay, soo my friend gave me his old 8525.
I started to use it, it worked fine for about a week,
until i started to notice how the QWERTY keyboard was
becoming unresponsive at times.
I didnt think much of it, until a reboot
and my screen went tricolor
with the words

HERM100
IPL-1.01

HERM100
SPL-1.06

and below in the white
Serial

I can tell you that what you're seeing is the boot loader, from here you can hard reset the device to try and get it back.

I had this happen once before on my jasjam.

Plug in the USB and Launch the ROM installer (http://www.america.htc.com/support/8525/software-downloads.html for offical)

has gotten me out of being stuck in the boot loader plenty. That or try loading an memorycard with a rom image named HERMIMG.rbh (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing)

Mmmm,

I would be very careful. As ruxton said you are in bootloader mode. As you do not know anything about this phone lets be a bit more specific. (I hope its well your phone ;) )

The bootloader mode is there to load (flash) a new firmware (Can be the OS, a radio rom, etc...) As we speak about the kernel of your pda, there is obviously a risk to distroy it. This is why it is hardly recommended to install another SPL (hardspl from olipro) before playing. But this is another story... for the moment. :)

IF the firmware is not corrupted, you can leave the bootloader mode:

Try first to "soft reset" your pda (little hole on the bottom of the phone. Push the button with the stylus). It will reinitialise the pda without loosing data

Second: Remove the battery for 1 minute and insert it again. Soft reset if necessary

Third: the hard reset method. Here you loose your data: Push "soft key left" (above the ms logo), "soft key right" (above the ok) maintain together and perform a soft reset at the same time (see above). Answer to the questions.

If this does not work, this could mean that the firmware is corrupted. You will have to flash... But again...this is another story. Lets see if it is necessary.
