Hi Spinny, I'm not sure if this is right but I think the prophet is not a 3G phone ( which uses the UMTS connection) but is a 2G phone running on GSM. Your phone is probably unlocked and able to use sims from T mobile ,Orange ,O2 and Vodafone etc.
As far as I know , 3G phones run on UMTS when there is an available connection but will switch to GSM when the UMTS not available. Therefore it connects to your Orange network and works but you will be getting billed by 3 network and you wouldn't be able to use video calling.Hope that helps. There is a lot of info here too http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=456&view=1 :)
