Could it be that is was overheating? I remember that long usage of gprs on my device caused it to act funny. One time I had mobiletorrent running for quite a while and suddenly the device said the battery was dangerously low even though it was being charged, 10 seconds later it deactivated.

It could be the reason HTC does not enable it.

i've never needed five hours straight wifi but if you put it on then fell asleep to wake up to a fried device would not be good

Overheating could perhaps be the issue. My Niki gets pretty hot using 3G continuously.

Overheat ... HTC build in Protection ... the reason why niki havent wifi

This is only a Software error. We edit parts in the Niki without full knowlage about it. We activate subroutine in the SPL to activate this function. We patch Radio Rom too. This are all possible errors. No on knows in the moment what happen. We are only a big step closer, to finish this Project.I thin next step is, we copy some subfunctions to a niki SPL and looks whats happen.

the HEX-code means there is no Byte set... cuz all got deleted/formated.

It's not true brick after that when it is security unlocked and also
when it's not security unlocked... after SPL is deleted it jumps
to the OEMSBL... jockyw2001 brougth us the very powerfull Tool
"FrankenKaiser" and with that u can nearly unbrick every MSM7200

Chips are every time small ... and in the futur much smaller! you must look under the metalshild and you found the right chip. if you use google you know what this chip does.

2 for Blutooth/Wifi

u don't need 2 Antennas for bluetooth and Wifi both functions are at the
2.4GHz Band.

Finally my suffers are gone. I bought Nokia E71. No f..ing touchscreen, great Wi-Fi (working very well), GPS, !!! QWERTY !!!, not much bigger (but thinner) and heavier. Very comfortable! 1500 mAh battery (living 2-6 days subject to usage). And almost nothing to improve. You've got everything you need!
And all this for smaller money! I'm very angry on HTC. :mad:

There was no possibility to sell my Niki (at least for adequate money), but I could change it to HTC Wings (as my second phone for abroad trips). It is not perfect - but it has qwerty and WiFi :)

As I said, No specific wifi chip.
Unless one of the 2 chips (HFQA29 or HFQA55) has wifi functionality.

But what I understand is the wifi eeprom in the the polaris and in the kaiser is based on TNETW1251 from Texas Instrument. But in the Niki, it is not present.
Also the eeprom needs to be activated by the SPL Bootloader.

Wifi expert: Just to summarize for everyone:
Wifi antenna present. HTC uses a shared antenna for Bluetooth and Wifi.
Wifi ship ? unknow. Although Netrunner told me he succeed to activate TNETW1251 eeprom, I dismantled several time my Nike, removed all shield cover and the usual TNETW1251 ship is not present. But after toons of Internet search, I read news saying HTC implement wifi on their ship. So maybe in one of these 2 chips (HFQA29 or HFQA55).
Wifi activated by SPL: This is exactly the problem. On nike the SPL doesn't activate "wifi ship" (if it is present). Without very expert knowledge on SPL, it's quite impossible to have this done.

I'm still with my Nike, and enjoy it (I face only one problem with the front speaker. after a while, strange sound comes. In fact the gold contacts are bad and I soldered a really thin cable to allow permanent contact. et voilà!)

I'm still keeping hope on wifi ... why not? I don't have money to buy a new device.
I'm not ready to complain on wifi crew. Just thing about this: they are people like you and me, with real life, real job, real obligation. They are just more than us ... they are also spending time for others, free of charge, anymously,sometimes during night and day, sometimes during week-ends and holidays. I'm quite hold ... and saw so many times Internet comes from free help communities to money based tool.
Do this test .. type any word in a web search engine .. and the 2 or 3 first pages are lot of "buy ..." the word you wrote.

So please for who complains about no success on wifi task, if you have money to buy a new one, stop complains and buy a wifi enabled device. No one told you wifi was here at the beginning. For others, keep hope but stop asking again and again "any news" ... If it's happen, news will be widely published, don't worry about that.

If in this new upgrape, it might be aswell coming from HTC the device and so on. Maybe with the newly discovered chip it might already be! But if the chip isn't recogniced as such, as in, say the touch dual, i must conclude it doesn't exists as of such with the HTC..!!

I've tried to read this thread, but I can't read it all, too many lame posts saying "is it ready?"

But anyway, must say some little things:

The fact that Qualcomm's MSM7200 series cpu have support for gps doesn't mean that it actually has the supporting electronics installed. That just means it has a port, to directly communicate with their propetary gps RF electronics, in case HTC, or whatever manufacturer wants to put it there. Simple: buy a bluetooth gps. Or, if you want it internal, look for a free uart on the phone, find a gps with a ttl serial port and wire it up.


Maybe the rom has an executable for wifi settings. Windows mobile has native support for Wifi, I think it's perfectly normal. In fact, the HTC Touch Dual has a MicroSDIO connector, so you can buy an adapter and actually have wifi. So, Windows mobile's support for wifi should be there just in case.

HTC usally puts a Texas Instruments chip for Wifi (TNETW 12XX). For bluetooth chipsets is a BRF6500 or something like that (cannot remember exactly). If you can't see that chip soldered on the motherboard, you're possibly out of luck.

Spectec does have SD, MiniSD and MicroSD Wireless adapters. It's just a matter of trying if it works. You can buy a SD and remap the wires to a MicroSD and test if it works. Or you can pay 90€ approx for a Wifi MicroSD and try it out. If it really has SDIO support, the thing should work. But you would loose external storage capacity.

I'm going to say that I'm working on the nike wifi patch.

I haven't got wifi working yet so I can't say how close I am. It seems most of the key previous wifi knowledge was with valvarin and he/she seems uncontactable at the moment (last post in september)

The problem with working on wifi is that if you aren't careful then you could brick your device when making radio edits. Knowledge dumps on forums could lead to people bricking their devices.

What would help, would be for somebody to create a wifi enabled ROM, you can't brick your device doing that at least.

Hi guys, in this days I will try tu use an SD wifi in a card reader insert in the external mini usb of the niki... If it works I wrote you here the solution and the instruction to do it.

Dont waste your time doing that, SoftTuning. It will not work due to the way how USB works. In order to connect a card reader you will need a host (an A) port, not a device (B-) port such as the one on the phone.

Well, actually there are converter cables for miniUSB to the big host ports, and there is a host-usb driver out there for WM6 (maybe 5 too), but it only supports mass storage and HID devices (it was around here at XDA in the development section). So the 'only' thing that remains is a WLAN driver. And that's a tough one, as there's not probably gonna be one driver that works on all usb-wifi adapters. It is theoretically possible, though :P

Just to clarify a point. Technically speaking, wifi is really built in, but it's disabled. It could only be enabled at a low level, within the bootloader (SPL), not with any rom. Regarding donations ... I'm away from these discussions. I'm an old Internet user, and very disappointed how the Web became a money maker. I remember these old days you easily found around the world people enjoying to help each others .. just for fun against commercials companies.

Now, like in any other things, money became the king. But we get what we built ... Don't blame others, we are all humans.:(

We have compare all phones ... you tell nothing new ... both are inside, but gps havent the right antenna and rf chip. Its very difficult to explain. Its like Wing and Sedna.

First I know I tell nothing new, but it seems people don't read more than the last page of each thread, so it seems like we have to repeat it over and over again. In fact I already said this very same thing some time ago on this thread...

About the wlan ic, if it's there I haven't seen it. I took photos of the main board inside (some here http://rapidshare.com/files/210484243/100KV803.rar), and I saw the brf 6300 ic (bluetooth module), but no traces of a tnet wlan module or anything like that. On the GPS side, I know (I've seen qualcomm's product brochures) that the msm7200 platform does support gps and agps, but that doesn't mean it's "populated" for calling it something (my english is not that good :()

Anyway, about usb host, in fact it is present (http://web.archive.org/web/20060615182655/http://cdmatech.com/download_library/pdf/msm7200_chipset.pdf). USB on the go standard tells you can switch from client to host using the same wires (http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans6). You don't have vout, so you should need to get +5v from somewhere else to powerup the device, but it should be possible to enable host mode anyway (don't know how to switch from client to host though)

What the guys here at XDA developers do is so good! Without them we would be stuck with boring bog standard Windows Mobile devices. When topics like this one appear its purely to see if it is possible and if it is then it most probably is done. Its not guaranteed to have WiFi and it to be working perfectly in hours! Like everything it takes time.

You might flame at everyone but the main point is.

If you want WiFi get another phone with WiFi.
