Most T-Mobile WM5/WM6 phones are able to skip the cold-boot Welcome screen entirely and goes straight to "Configuring Device". What registry settings make it do this? Also, what configuration files is it executing when this occurs?

In the initflashfiles.dat file, there are two lines responsible for the applications running at first boot: Directory("\Windows\StartUp"):-File("coldinit.lnk","\Windows\coldinit.lnk")
Directory("\Windows\StartUp"):-File("welcome.lnk","\Windows\welcome.lnk")Removing the second one or adding the comment tag (;), will prevent the "Welcome" screen from appearing. Smartphones do not have the "Configuring Device" screen, just the "Welcome" screen, where you can set date/time and email accounts. :)

The TMO ones really do have a configuring device screen. My SDA had it with the original WM5 and my T-Mobile Dash (Excalibur) has it.

I've attached a pic of what the screen looks like. It completely bypasses the welcome and does this "Configuring Device" screen instead. I think it's setting things up, but I don't know what files it's using to set stuff up or what it's doing.

I think my Cingular 3125 (StarTrek) does this too if I recall correctly.

How do you cold boot your Dash?

How do you cold boot your Dash?
Cold boot is old language. Strictly speaking, a warm boot would be a soft reset and a cold boot would be recycling the power (off/on)

restart with power = warm boot (with DOS PC it was Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
and restart from no power = cold boot (with DOS PC it was the reset button, or toggle the on/off switch)

The 'boot' required to get the welcome screen would be a hard reset. You can get a hard reset by going to the Settings for Storage and clear storage, or:

From power off,

Hold left and right soft buttons (Start and Contacts).
Push power on.
When you see a black screen, press 0.

N.B. These are the directions for hard reset of the Tornado. It does work the same for many other devices, but you may have to check the Wiki for your device if it is not a Tornado.
