Hi guys,
In December, I started having problems with my WiFi. When I go into Comm Manager and press the WiFi symbol, I get the WinMo6 "spinner" to let me know it is thinking and then nothing.
Since then I've tried 3 or 4 different ROMs and I am still having the same problem. Is it just time for a new phone? :( Does anyone have any helpful hints or things to try?
Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem but it will turn on, find the AP but not connect. I have a g-only router ang a b-only router (both unsecured) it will not connect to either, it'll try for a few seconds then stop. I have activate the connect to G router hack in the registry.

As a note, I just turned on the Today Item "Wireless" and WiFi doesn't show up at all. Does that give anyone any clues?

my phone sometimes does this not-connecting-to-available-router-trick, then my usual procedure is to reboot the router.
Sometimes it shows the Icon as connected, but in reality won't even turn on the WiFi, even after a reboot. Then it's a bit more complex... I switch off the AP, then the wireless subsystem, reboot the phone, while it's booting reboot the AP, and THEN activate wireless. This usually shocks it back into sense and it connects just fine. This usually happens after I accidentally use the popup window to control the WiFi, or sometimes randomly. Small problem, but when it happens, pretty annoying...

What radio version are you guys using? I think I have 1.18.00. I am using Laurentius26's 2.05.00 ROM.

Guys,
Get a copy of TaskManager and check in the devices tab and check the wlan, also check your services tab.
It is likely that you either
1 Have a bad flash
2 Have a corrupt/unsigned driver
3 A hardware fault
My guess would be 2

Thanks for the response, Beast.
I see this: $device\WWN0(WWN0:) Status: Loaded. Startup Type: Automatic. Dll: wwan.dll. Reg Key: Drivers\BuiltIn\WWN
I can stop it and restart it but it doesn't seem to do anything... Any ideas?

check out ZCF1 (zero config) device.
is it okay/loaded? which dll it uses?
and is there any other device that's unloaded?

Mine would be 3. I'm using your ROM, so I trust you didn't include bad drivers;)
Although when fixed the way I said, it works A-OK...

ZCF1 is loaded and using WZCSVC.dll.
There are 4 unloaded devices: DSK3, DSK2, COM8 and MIX1.
Thanks for your help as well. :) I hope we can get to the bottom of this.

mzalan - your problem seems different then jrronimo's.
mzalan's problem seems somewhat like something i experienced 2 days ago - relating to the wpa-tkip fix.
although i think your problem has nothing to do with the router, i think rebooting your phone is what does the trick. am i wrong?
i've made a cab for the wpa fix. after installing it my problems were gone.
give it a try - couldn't hurt.
jrronimo - maybe you should give it a shot also?

Yes, you are wrong, I must say. You see, this only happens in the dormitory where stay during weekdays at school. There is one wireless AP there, a small Linksys unit, which only stops working if there are many connections through it(solved, since I limited the number of clients in the DHCP to 10, whit a 30min lease. The tech-man forgot to set a new admin password:P:D), or if the flow is too great. My tech-savvy roommate says it dies because the processor is too weak to handle the flow or the many connections, and the firmware hangs, that's why it needs to be reset.
The other thing supporting me is that those are the times when everyone with a laptop in the dorms comes running to me, or just yelling down the corridor for me to "do something about the net".:D So it can't be my phone only.
The second case, where the icon shows me as connected, however, is only the fault of my phone, but even then the router needs to be turned off before I reboot the phone to sort of "shock WiFi system back into life". Luckily, this does not happen often. But these are the times when everyone keeps asking why there was a drop in the service...

Well, I tried this and it didn't seem to help or hurt. I now see ZCF1: as having the driver wpatkip.dll but loaded or unloaded WiFi doesn't load.
A few times over the weekend, though, it WOULD load up (before I tried the .cab, I think)... but then it would turn itself off. Also, the page in the network settings where you would normally see a list of available access points is just sorta... gone. :p

sounds like your registry is corrupt. I would format the doc with mtty Task 28 55a and re-flash your rom mate.

That sounds scary but I'm certainly willing to try. :) The registry doesn't get overwritten when a new image is installed? Eesh.
So... what do I do? heh. I hate to be a noob about it but mtty is not something I've had to deal with before.

Firstly you need to download MTTY, it's floating around this Forum somewhere.
Secondly read the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Technical
This has details of all commands accseible through MTTY.
Yes the reg should be cleared when flashing, however it requires user input to "Clear Storage" after a flash, and it is possible that the DOC is corrupted.
If you still have questions after searching on MTTY, post back and we'll give more help.

I've only FINALLY had time to get to this... thanks for your help in the first place.
I think I bricked my Uni. :(
I got in with mtty (I set "USB" and "local echo: yes").
I did "task 28 55aa" twice in a row (I didin't think it worked the first time).
I did a couple of the "info" commands.
I did "task 8" to reset it.
The Uni reset to a white screen as if it were booting, but didn't seem to go past that. I pulled out the battery. (Looking back, this would be the big mistake).
Now I try to reset it into Bootloader and nothing happens. I plug it in to my laptop and all I get is "USB Device Not Recognized".
>< I'm mad at myself. :(
Edit:// I have hope! I can get the white screen that says "Press 0 to restore factory default. Press X to exit" to come up if I press Button 1 and Button 2. But it doesn't seem to do anything regardless of what I choose. :/
Edit 2:// Nevermind! I got it into bootloader mode and was able to reflash. Now I'm starting it up with one of the WM6.1 ROMs. Phew! I was worried.

Okay! Phew, relief. Phone seems to be working okay.
Except that my Wifi STILL isn't working! Do you have to save after you do "task 28 55aa" or something? All I did was tell my phone to reset...

I don't know if it's related or not to your problem but I don't think all WiFi is created equally, as the manufacturers would have us believe.
I have several routers\APs lying about the place and I have a Vaio with G wifi. with my netgear router\linksys ap, the connection is really bad and drop regularly when I get connected. I have the same problem with my Netgear Wireless and that only becomes stable if I turn off security\encryption on the router.
My D-Link wireless router works perfectly though.
As compatible as these things are all supposed to be, this leads me to believe that not everything works well together...
Smiffy.

I have faith in my home network -- I run a couple of Linsys routers using the dd-wrt firmware. They're perfectly stable for all of my equipment.
The problem is that I cannot turn wi-fi on my Uni on. I'll hit the button and nothing happens... the pinwheel comes up but it never engages the wifi.
After I reset the DOM last night, I noticed my wifi would be on sometimes... it's really weird. I'll have to explore today if I have time. I'm also running a WM6.1 firmware.

I have the same issue.
After any WM6/6.1 upgrade the wifi works for a while then it wont start through com manager.
I am just wondering about downgrading to a WM5 ROM to see if that makes a difference?
If I could find one that is.....

After reading this thread I realized I have a similar problem.
Task manager shows WWNO as unloaded and when I try to start it I get "the system cannot find the file specified". All other devices are running.
However, wi-fi is working properly (sometimes it won't connect if I'd been using a different one). Browsing and Skype are fluent. However, Fring and GoogleMaps won't connect, saying access points are not configured, which is strange, because wi-fi is on. These two used to work fine until 2-3 weeks ago. Maybe this is related to the device not running?
Please let me know how I can start this device.
I do not have phone connection.

I had the same problem. When I flashed any 6 or 6.1 rom, wifi canīt join the internet. I made mtty, then I flashed wm 5 rom and wifi is working now. I donīt know, where is the Problem, but on my Uni wifi works only under wm 5. I hope, I help you. And sorry, my English is terrible. ;)

After having this problem for half a year or more: - what i thought was "all WM6.1 ROMS" - i figured it out after not seeing any different components between a Jasjar 64Mb motherboard, and a QTEK 128MB motherboard (except for the RAM upgrade:)
----------
It felt like:
I clicked "wifi" , the "hourglass" symbol rotated for a while, but no Wifi was turned on, no flashing on left LED, and no symbol appeared.
----------
I discovered that removing the bottom cover (the one that holds the battery in place) fixed the problem !
-I disassembled everything around motherboard,a and the motherboard itself.
-the white antenna holder was mounted using only 2 screws, one, closest to the smaller antenna was never there, and there was no hole for it beneath the PCB.
-One of the antenna-legs of the smaller antenna on the white antenna-assembly, did not touch the PCB pad.
-I reassembled everything, and mounted the antenna holder's third hole using another method.
-Checked that the edges of mylar-screen did not touch components.
-Reassembled everything, booted, and it works - every time.
Windows mobile 6.1 or any ROM is absolutely not to blame.
I might have been the antenna, or some poorly mounted mylar screen.
I assume the real Wifi antenna is the small one, near USB connector, and the one I fixed are GSM/UMTS antennas.
But the most important is that it works now, and no ROM is to blame.
same ROM (currently Tomal 8.81) works fine.

Thanks AlCapone, that's a really good find. Perhaps you can post this on the wiki under hardware. Many problems are always thought to be the ROM (or software), but who actually thinks their hardware may be at fault!

Hi,
I have found a way to fix this!
if your Wifi is not damaged (Broken hardware) then this solution will help you to fix the starting problem...
do this:
go to HKLM\ControlPanel\wifi\UIDelayAfterBoot=220
if you dont have this DWORD then create it!
It's will start the WIFI after 220 seconds on boot!
If your full boot takes less then 2 minutes, then you can change to 150
This fixed my problem!!!
Worked for HTC HD
But may work for all, this is simple action...
Please reply if it solved your problem.
Good luck
