This is Ariel Battery Monitor v2.1 2009 Official site

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/605/arielbatterymonitor1.jpg

Short description:
-Ariel taskbar battery charge monitor/indicator/gauge/meter replaces the "Start" button Icon at the taskbar with battery info icon.
It is a freeware and will remain so.

Installation:
Just delete the old ArielBatteryX.exe if present and copy the new one.

Main features:
-Makes good use of the unused space of the "Start" button icon.
-Battery power is always visible, because it is on the taskbar.
-Very low CPU consumption (Only about 0.001% !!! Much less than any other battery monitoring program !!!)
-Tiny memory usage, Much smaller than kBattery, pBar, magicbutton, batmon or xbutton.
-Just put it on StartUp folder or link to it, and it will do the job!
-WM2003, WM2005 (WM5) , WM6 .
-Full control of all displayed colors.
-The gauge can be moved to replace any icon on the taskbar
-Landscape mode is supported
-VGA screens are supported ( Drag the "pick color" window by it's title to see it all )
-HTC Diamond supported
-HTC Touch HD supported ( Some small graphic representation issues of free space in memory cards , that will be fixed). Please tell me if you have any problems.
-Compatible with QuickMenu ( Just go to QuickMenu options and check "Replace system's start-menu" checkbox ).

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9923/dmndlinewy9.jpg

What's new in version 2.1 :
-Ariel Battery Icon can now be alligned to both right and left, to support people who frequently change from portrait mode to landscape, and chose to put the icon on top of some other icon, and not the start icon.
-Performance improvement

What's new in version 2.0 :
-WM6 gradient color compatibility
-Full control of all displayed colors

The Ariel Battery meter is dedicated to my son, Ariel :-)

You click on the battery icon ( where the start icon used to be ) and a menu opens downwads. Go to "setup" and there you will find how to move it to replace any other icon in the taskbar :)

I like ariel battery but I find the font doesn't stand out well and is hard to read on all built in themes. Just my opinion. I assume the graph will work but won't be as accurate as the number percentage. Nice work though, maybe a choice of text font size and color or ability to change both the text and background around it might help. Just my $.02

Ditto for me too!! Baby crawling pretty quickly now??

By the way, any chance that we could get a similar little app to show the free running program memory in the taskbar? I have tried many battery meters and this is fantastic. I love the idea that I can put it anywhere on the taskbar..beautiful!

Cool! Confirmed working well in WM6.1 mwang (DFT) Universal VGA device. Suits well SnapVUE users who practically doesn't have the Today Screen occupied by SnapVUE.

Color selection screen on setup expands outside the screen preventing selection of other colors or adjusting the hue slider (if there's any, just guessing coz I don't see it). But, that's no big deal just would like you to know. Probably coz Universal is a VGA device.

Thanks a lot, Ariel would be proud to have a cool parent like you!

On VGA screens, the color choosing window is very large. The window however can be dragged (by the titlebar), and moved, so every part of it is accessible .

Nice program because i dont need and use the startbar.

But 3 Problems on my htc touchcruise (wm6):

1. i cant move the battery icon
2. if i close your setup with ok, your software stops an the windows icon is still there.
3. the default windows battery icon is still there ?

is all this normal ?

Is it silly to ask where you download the actual application from? The attachment on this note is the only place I could find to download the application, and this only has version 1.6.2. I noticed the download link on pocketpcfreeware, but that just goes to a page on xda-developers that says this:

"In order to accept POST request originating from this domain, the admin must add this domain to the whitelist."

There were no problem reported so far with HTC.
Regarding your questions:
1. It is very odd you can't move the Ariel battery icon.
2. Maybe you have installed a program that really closes other programs when you click ok or x. In that case, you should pu Ariel battery monitor in excluded list.
3. To hide the default battery icon, you can move the ariel battery to cover it. ( However you said u have a problem with moving ... odd ...)

Good luck.

Fantastic application sunny127! Any chance of making an all white color version?

I presume you want the black and white version for htc touch and similar devices with black themes by default. Anyway, the new Ariel battery version ( v2.0 ) allows to choose colors manually, and by that, make them all black and white, or with shades of gray.
Enjoy.

This may sound like a strange question but:
How can I get the meter to run without showing up under the Today menu (running programs)? Or this even possible?

I love the idea of this batt meter, but can't get it to work with Moto Q9. It has Win mobile 6, but no touchscreen. By not working I mean I can't get it to display on the home screen. If I look at the icon with file manager, it shows batt pwr in icon, so the hooks to the system work.

This proggie is not designed to work on smart phones, however if more ppl will ask for it, the issue can be reconsidered :)

This sounds like a good idea. Maybe even swap your suggested taps, so that a short tap will open the start menu, and a long tap will open the Ariel battery options. I will consider it for a future version.

Ariel battery is not listed in the "Running programs" list in WM5, however it is visible there in WM6. In the future version, I hope to keep it unlisted in WM6 too.

Under "Tools" it shows "Estimated Battery lifetime". I have the xv6800, how is this calculated? Is it just a standard or right on? Good app, especially for those that upgraded to DCD's ROM that does not have a battery indicator!

To use the "Estimated Battery lifetime" feature, you should input the maximum minutes your phone can last between recharges.
Ariel battery only estimates it, very roughly.

To really estimate the time that a phone can last, many details has to be taken to account, and most of all, a program that can estimate that time good enough has to be a "learning" type program ( wich monitors your phone during various usage types, like making a phone call, surfing , standby etc .. ) and after some period of time, should be able to estimate the remaining time pretty good, specifically for your phone.
Ariel battery does not have such an aglorythm, however, you gave me an idea for a new program/feature :)

My suggestion is to put the exe file in the .\Windows\Startup directory, so it runs itself every soft reset. Of Course you can put the exe file anywhere, create a shortcut to it, and put the shortcut in the Startup directory.
Both ways will do the job.

Yep, runs fine on my Treo 750 (which technically is not a smartphone in the sense that a Blackjack or Moto Q are smartphones).

Reducing the size of the hide button or placing it in the softbutton bar at the bottom would do the trick nicely. Even better would be a simple tap of the main portion of the screen to hide would be slick since there is no other action taking place in the main screen other than the display of info (not including the softbutton bar).

Cheers!

Great. Running on my mogul, like the fact that I can choose the colors and make it fade into the task bar. This may sound lame, but I use the "start" icon a lot, so I had to dump it on top of the "EV" icon. If I put it next to it, I could not see the missed calls, messages icons when they show up. It would be cool if it can take that last place in the icon bar and move to the left automatically when a new icon shows up (like missed calls) and then move back. But so far Great! Tell Dr. Evil to spare us!

There are many battery monitor programs for the today screen. Ariel battery came to present a solution for not being able to see the battery level at all times, for example, while using the phone ( at phone enabled devices ), when the today screen is not seen.

Thanks for the complement :)

Ariel battery is designed to take as little resources as possible, so it consumes only about 0.001% CPU ( very little ), therefore consumes negligible battery power.

also how do you install this? i'm tryinf to install it on my tilt phone?

Just copy the ArielBattery.exe file to the "/Windows/StartUp" folder on your PPC. No windows install is needed.

Very nice app ... great work....

couple of suggestions for some future version:

1. I'm using it on TyTN II (Kiser) and I have set batt icon position to show over original battery icon. Is is working great in portrait mode, but when I change to a landscape mode (by sliding keyboard out) it covers some other icons and not the originall battery icon (i.e. it stays on the portrait possition and gets missplaced for a landscape). It should be a simple possition recalc in "orientation change event/notification".

2. Is it possible to make the battery icons skinnabe ? I very much like look and shape of original OS icons (with small bars in it), and i would love ArielBatt to be able to use them just with color coding for remaining capacity and <no>% indicator.

Thanks, Nenad

Great app. Thanks!

I may be going mad, but I thought somewhere I saw something just like this that could monitor other things, like memory or CPU usage. Anyone know? The main thing I'd like to see, as well as battery, is CPU usage.

Cheers

Rob

The CPU usage can be monitored via a program named "XCPUScalar", which can also overclock your device, so it runs much faster ( or slower if underclocked ).

However, writing a program to monitor the CPU speed is very tricky. If you find a program other then the one I've mentioned, please share the info.

is it just me or when i installed version 2.0, my battery meter increments only go by .10 instead of .01 like it was previously mentioned in this thread.

Ariel battery is built specifically to appear at all times, so the battery info will be visible during phone calls for example. If you wish to see battery info on the today screen, consider using program called "BatteryStatus", wich shows batery info on today screen.

super nice app! works perfect!

I have one suggestion:
I use it on my diamond (VGA) and it's some pixels too near to the top of the phone... I hope you get what I mean...

Propably the best solution would be to implement not only the "move left-right" buttons but also "move top-bottom" buttons...

of course I can move battery icon, but i think that start menu button is great place for that. but I can't use start menu :(

maybe like optional settings.....

hmm.. what about this.. let say that the total height of the battery from top to bottom is 10 (ten is a number to reference height for an example). now the battery takes up 6 and the text below it takes up 4 in height. Now if you take the text off the bottom (4) you end up with extra space for the battery icon. you can make it larger on the top and bottom by 4 using the space you just got from removing the text from the bottom. then put it inside and it should end up being the exact same space in height.

in the end you will end up with a larger battery icon with the same size text inside it (X Percent).

I would prefer seperate line to display text and icon of battery status as the original one. The text is more readable in tiny device.

One suggestion: Can you make the frame in a thicker line? Since there is only an option to change the frame colour when in charging, and it can be showed up better if the frame size is thicker.

Ariel battery was written in pure API, without .NET or any other components.
It should work on any Windows Mobile device.

Try launching Ariel Battey manually from the File explorer on your device, and see if it runs ok.

http://i33.tinypic.com/2h6zv9z.jpg

1) In your first sugestion, there is no %, just a number. In my opinion, if the number is there by itself, it is bit unclear what is stands for.

2) In your middle illustration, there are 16 pixels in width to hold the number and percentages, when in the current version there are 20 pixels for that. ( In your midle painting the number is touching the side walls of the battery drawing. It makes the number sometimes unclear. There should be at least one pixel to seperate the number from the walls. That leaves only 16 pixels in width to work with , which is 20% less then 20 pixels, thus the number will be 20% smaller).

3) In your third suggestion, the number is very small and thus unclear relatively to the current version.

If you manage to come to some other variation, let me know :)

HTC Touch Diamond has a VGA screen. Therefore, when you go to Tools->Setup , and try to change one of the chosen colors, the color selection window is bigger than the screen. However, that color selection window can be moved ( just drag it with your stylus pen by the title bar at it's top ).
Did this solved your problem ?
BTW , the colors can be changed thrue the registry as well. ( 0xFF0000 = Red, 0x00FF00 = Green etc ... )

No cab file is needed. Just put the ArielBattery.exe file in the .\Windows\Startup directory, so it runs itself every soft reset. Of Course you can put the exe file anywhere, create a shortcut to it, and put the shortcut in the Startup directory.

very good program but you need to add some facilities they can be optional by marking them tickmark unable. I feel this meter should replace original meter which it does but it should not be permanant on display and should disappear when original battery icon disappears and should take exact place of original battery icon. This can be a additional option and you may add tickmark to unable it. But this feature will have lot of takers as it looks bad if time is shown in half from behind battery meter. I understand you want it on task bar permanently but that can be an option too
Think and if possible modify it to make it more attractive.

Unforchently, there are several WM operating systems ( WM2003 , WM2005 , WM2006 , WM7-new ) and even more home screen shells. Each one handles battery display differently, draws it differently, etc.
It will be extrimely hard to make Ariel Battery to detect even a few of all those different options.

Let me correct you. Ariel Battery has options. Those options need to be saved somewhere, so that when the program restarts ( after a soft reset for an example ) it will remember the chosen options like colors etc...
Those options shouldn't be saved inside the exe file, and are saved in the registry.

Ariel battery was built with a great thought of efficiency and power saving. Since the program's CPU usage is about 0.001% , and it's memory footprint is so tiny, the processor barely wastes any resources on the program, therefore the impact on the device's battery is absolutely neglectible. :)

I got that impression from this thread. No complaints. Thank you very much for this program. Very simple, yet very handy. I was running SPB mobile shell and the today screen had the battery %. Now, I'm running Manilla, and this app fits the bill perfectly since I didn't have a battery meter.

The problem with using a battery monitor program that adds another Icon to the icons in the top bar, is that it leavs less space for other top bar icons, so when a new icon has to be shown ( like a reminder , or an sms ) there is no space for them, and they are gethered under a general icon. Not very convinient . Ariel Battery replaces unused icons, therefore wastes no realestate space :)

There are several electronic ways to determine battery percentage.
My guess is that pocket pc devices measure the batteries’ output voltage and current, respectively to the device's inner resistance, and by that can determine the remaining battery power.
However, windows mobile programmers don't have to worry about these things, as there is a simple API call to determine the remaining power, in percentage.

Hi - I've noticed that the battery icon is only updated in 10% increments on my Sprint Diamond. Is there any way to get it to update in 1% increments?

Thx,

At my Diamond it is just updated in 1%.

I am wondering how you could programmatically put the battery icon on any place at the top-bar? And how the callback of pressing the battery icon is detected.

It is not done via a notification icon, I guess.

The reason I ask this, is because I want to add a lock icon to the top bar, but I do not want to a use notification icon, because this interferes with other notifications.

I would be happy if you could share some example code.

Thanks.

Ariel Battery is based on an open source project called kbattery1.0.3 which can be downloaded here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kbattery/

All you should do is find the DC of the taskbar, and create a window as it's child. Then, it will be redrawn every time the relevant part in the taskbar is.

Some devices have outdated drivers. If you update your driver, all battery meter programs will be able to detect 1% chages in battery life. Check this page:

I really like Ariel Battery and I use it 100% of the time, but curious if there's any way to fix some bleeding of the colors I see on my Tilt.

I'm running ROMeOS 4.6, so WM 6.1. Running a fairly basic theme, nothing fancy, and not doing anything funny to my top and bottom bar colors (like the glossyblackbars.exe or such). But under the numeric battery percentage, there's some weird color. I'm running some Today screen items such as SPB Pocket Plus, some others, but I don't believe they affect it at all.

I'm attaching a scaled-up snapshot for reference.

Thanks for the program!

I was able to get the capacitive hardware touches in a Child Window of the Top bar, as descibed in CapacitiveFingerlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2873555&postcount=44)

But the problem is, that only at start of the child window I get the sensor events back. I suspect, that when another window has been opened, the child window does not get focus anymore, so no sensor events (and keyboard events) will be given to the Child Window.

See CapacitiveFingerlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2873555&postcount=44) for some code, I used.
Do you have an idea how to get back the possibility to receive keyboard/sensor events?

To detect a key press when your program window is not on top is very tricky, even on a regular Windows mashine, not mentioning Windows Mobile.
This is called "KeyHook". Used mostly to create "keyloggers" ( Bad bad bad ! )

This is one way to do it for Windows: ( Now Windows Mobile)

Thanks for the help and hints sofar :) I don't want to write a keylogger :D Actually, I only want to get back the capacitive sensor touches from the HTC Touch Diamond and Pro to my Child Window.

I figured out, that on the Today screen, I get the focus automatically, when I create the child Window in CreateWindow with:

WS_CHILD|WS_VISIBLE|WS_POPUP

The WS_POPUP makes sure that when the Start Bar is shown, the Child Window can capture the WM_HTC_TOUCH callbacks. So that part is working now :)

Now the next problem occurs. When another program (non-full screen) is active, I can see the Child Window, but then it does not get focus. I tried to hide/show the Child Window and funny enough, the Child Window is even shown over a full screen window. But the WMC_HTC_TOUCH callbacks are not coming now, unfortunately. That is of course understandable, because normal the input should go to the active program. But I am writing a locking application and when locked it is not a problem that the input is going to my Child Window, that is the intention.

I tried to send a mouse_event to the Child Window, but that does not seem to work. I will search further how I can get the W_HTC_TOUCH events when an active program is running. Any hints or alternative ideas are welcome

I have a workaround for the second problem. When I recreate the child window, it gets the focus, although another (full-screen) program became active (e.g. call coming in). So now, when it is locked, I am going to recreate the child window regularly (when the backlight is not off).

Maybe there are other more elegant ways to get the focus to the WS_POPUP child Window , but at least this one works

1) Did you put Ariel Battery on top of the Start button icon or on top of some other icon ?
2) Why would someone change the default battery icon to clock ? Can you post a screenshot ?

What I meant was: if you place AB on the standard battery icon (not on start) while on Today screen its fine. BUT if you chose the option Settings>System>Clock&Alarm>>More and then tick "Display the clock on the title bar in all program. THEN while one enters another program the AB covers the clock which actually appears in place of the standard Battery indicator. I hope its clear? Or I could try and post a screen shot. If only AB could behave like the Standard battery indicator which disappears and is replaced by the clock when one enters a prog. Thanks.

Ariel Battery was built to be visible at all times, unlike other Today Screen programs. It is recommended to put Ariel Battery to cover the Start icon.

Personally, I can't see why it's usefull to replace the battery indicator with a clock every time a program is ran and covers the today screen.
On my PPC, the clock is visible at all times, and Ariel Battery is visible at all times as well, covering the start icon.

You see when you have the HTC Home for Today one really doesn't need a clock the Today screen all the time. Because there is such a huge clock anyway. Whereas there isn't any Bat indicator on the HTC Home plug-in. So your little prog would/is a great replacement for the standard bat indicator. Especially the fact that is shows bat power in %. Anyway, just my view. :)

I'd love it if dmarden's request for a separate landscape position was added, though. Right now, I have it covering the Ok/X button in Portrait, and it moves (or rather doesn't) to cover the wifi signal meter in landscape.

Covering the start menu was a great idea, but I found that I personally used it too much to keep it there. :)

Wich "Fill" type did you choose in the setup? The Background value is ignored unless you set the fill to "custom"

I'm noticing a couple background color problems recently (Fuze). It seems that youtube and opera take the background color away from it once they are opened, used and then closed. If I click on the battery status icon however it seems to reset to the color choose. Opera seems to be the main one, so i would put the blame on that most likely.

The suggestion is, an option in the setup, to change the backgroun according to the percentage. From 100% to 40% green, from 40% to 10% yellow, and bellow that, red. It would give the app a better look and funcionallity and i think in my ignorance that is easy to do.
