View Full Version : Justed ordered an Orbit 2 on O2

I've just got off the phone from O2 after ordering my XDA Orbit 2 on their new tariff. I am a little sceptical however. I called them yesterday and they said that the phone was released today, the guy I spoke to was adamant about this. So I called up this morning and spoke to a nice lady. She told me that the screen said the phone was not released until the end of February but thought that was wrong and was sure it was today and went to check with someone.

She came back and told me it was available and the original Orbit was not being sold and all orders would be dispatched as the Orbit 2. I was given a choice of whether I wanted it with or without co-pilot, I went without and was told the cost was £19.99 on an Online 35 18 month contract or free with the Online 45 18 month contract. Still dubious whether I would get the original Orbit, she said she's go and check with a manager and call me back. Got a call back 5 minutes later to confirm it will definitely be the Orbit 2 so I placed my order.

Still wonder which I'll get, anyone else placed an order?

woohoo!

Just ordered mine (by dialing 202 on my existing o2 phone) - will be delivered by DHL in 1-2 working days (so Monday or Tuesday next week)

I triple checked it was the Orbit 2 (rather than Orbit 1)

Just for info the deal I managed to get was:

Free phone
18 month contract
600 x-network minutes
500 texts
unlimited internet
without the satnav software (not sure how much extra that would have been)
£25/month (is the £35 tariff but went through the retentions team who knocked it down).

Phoned up a few weeks ago asking for a PAC code. They offered me £15 off my current tariff (£35) if I also took the £7.50 data bolt-on taking it to £27.50. I said yes but wanted to wait for the Orbit 2 and he made a note on the system. So when I called again today they offered me the £35 tariff which now includes a free bolt-on. Told them about the previous offer which was still on their system so they offered my £10 off the new tarrif.

Might just have been lucky, but means they are willing/able to go down that much if you push them.

I spoke to Martin Peers ex 70682 in the retentions team initially. Not sure if dropping names and mentioning offers that other people have got helps but it might be worth a try.

Guys!!! Please tell me what you said!!!! I called them 3 times. Here are my experiences;

1. Called upgrades. Not out till end of Feb sorry, can't help.
2. Called new buyers. Out on Monday (this was reconnaissance work to see if they had it). As it happens I want good upgrade offers!
3. Called the retentaion dept and said I wanted to leave. I said the I know for a fact that other people have bought the Orbit 2 and I had been denied. The guy sounded bemused and said, well let me check....end of Feb. I said but it's on your website under the business dept. He said ohhhh yes I'm afraid that's a diff. dept and only available for business users because it's a business phone. He did say they would knock £20 off my existing £30p/m tarriff however! But no phone!!!! How can I blag it? Normally it's 3rd time lucky!

Sounds like the message hasn't trickled through to all the departments yet - so sounds like you've just been unlucky!!

When I ordered today, it was through the upgrade number, but because I mentioned that I'd already spoken to the retention team they put me through to them. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the girl I spoke to, but was definitely the retention team. She did take a while when checking if they were available so might not be on the screens yet?

Gonna ring upgrades back on the 6th because so far all the representatives there have been excellent. was offered £35pm, 400mins, 1000txts, 12 Month Contract and the phone for £39.99 and that was without haggling.

I should add that my £25pm deal with the handset for free was an upgrade and they'd put me through to retentions.

Makes a nice change from the days when I was with O2 previously and they wanted to charge me £50 (at end of contract) for a handset that was free to new customers! :p;)

1st February 2008, 08:24 PM
:) Well I did it!!! Called again :) I did what nick did, I called the upgrades dept and said I would like to speak to the retention dept. This time they had the Orbit 2's available to everyone (as opposed to my last 3 attempts). He wanted £49.99 for the phone and I retain my old £35 a month contract.

After a little blagging - he agreed that I could have the phone for free and I've swapped to the new 500 texts & 400 mintues, unlimited internet which is £35 a month AND because I'm an existing customer he knocked £15 a month off.

So - Orbit 2 Upgrade, Free Phone, New Tarrif for only £20 pm. Good eh!

:) Cheaper than buying a Touch Cruise retail, assuming you're an an 18 month contract.

Don't think that's the "proper" new £35pm tariff you're on though as you get 600 mins and 1000 texts with it (as well as the unlimited data bolt-on of course).

Still, £5pm saved if you don't need the extra minutes/texts. ;)

£50 for handset (although with trade of £30 for an old brick = £20), but thats on a £40 12 month contract. Sim card is for the Mrs as she talks a lot !

They will match-online basically. However since he could not properly check online - since it was not showing today (apart from in the business section)...any differences will be sorted out next week.

Inc. co-pilot and car charger / mount.

Hope this helps.

No they do an unlimited web package now. Actually, if you choose a 600+ min tarriff you can have the unlimited web bolt on free (or £7.50 pm if you aren't 600+).

I just realised my tarriff is 600 mins, 1000 text, unlimited web, free orbit 2, 18months, upgrade from last tarriff all for.......... £20.00 p/m! I think I got a good deal! Phone arrives Monday.

Hi all,
Hoes the unlimited web allow you to use it as a modem or is it only for web on the handset?
I am on Orange at the moment and out of contract as of today.
The rounded corners on the XDA appeal to me in preference to the more angular Cruise.
Are there any internal differences between the two?

Thanks

I have to wait til May for my T-Mobile contract to end but I went in to O2 in Chesterfield today just to get a feel for the Orbit 2. They had been sent 2 handsets on Friday. 1 was sold on Friday and the 2nd was being sold while I was in store. Popular handset!

I did have a play with the dummy handset - the scroll wheel isn't like I imagined. Whether it was because it was just a dummy handset I don't know but it protruded out more than I liked and it felt very 'grainy' when scrolling, like there was sand in the mechanism. I was expecting it to be like a mousewheel - with definite clicks as it's scrolled. Is a real handset like this?

I much prefer the overall shape of the orbit2 to the polaris, but I definitely prefer the look of the scroll/nav wheel of the polaris, especially as it has a light around the central button.

(I would also like to know if the O2 unlimited net allows you to use the phone as a modem as I use my Hermes like that all the time)

Damn. I just ordered mine on an upgrade today at £35 a month for 600mins, 1000 texts and unlimited data.

Should I call them back before the phone arrives to try to negotiate a better deal, or threaten to send the phone back under their 14 day return policy as a negotiating tool?

In my experience - ALWAYS pretend you're leaving and that you've had bad service and that you're going elsewhere and they will pull all the stops out. Okay so you have to lie a bit (or maybe not) but it's worth it.

As far as using the new O2 tarriff for data as a modem...don't! It clearly says, not to be used as a modem for a PC/P2P/Audio/Video Streaming/Voice! Anything else goes though!

I don't think that would stop me from using it on the odd occasion as a modem for my laptop. I don't think they'd be able to tell the difference between me using the phone to collect my emails or the laptop to do the same.

So how about establishing a VPN connection to your home router (DD-WRT) over PPTP on your phone, then setting this as the connection for the internet. You could run voip, stream media, use as modem, etc without o2 knowing what traffic is being transmitted?

Just a theory...

Bought mine on Friday; it has 1GB microSD with CoPilot7 pre-installed, car charger, windscreen-suction-cradle-thingy, headphones, remote control, USB connection, mains charger. That's it (I think).

Very expensive, considering some existing customers are getting them for free on the same contract BUT reduced from £35pm to £20pm!

Good to see them treating existing customers well but seems expensive for new people, especially as the N95 8Gb is free on the £35pm deal and it's a more expensive handset (retail).

Yes its expensive when you consider that for £45/months its free with copilot 7, as I got one on Saturday in Chesterfield O2.
So an extra £10/month is still cheaper over 18 months.

I have read on this forum that some are getting it online with o2 for free on a £35/month contract and paying £25/month.

My friend is a new customer and has been informed that the Orbit 2 is being held for existing customers only until Friday 8th.

Success at last!, I called O2 today and was told Orbit 2 wasn't on their system yet and therefore orders could not be placed, despite being called and offered an Orbit 2 by one of their reps on 1st Feb.

I tried again and again thinking maybe a different operator would get a different result, I explained the situation to the last guy and it turns out that the Orbit 2 is available first as a business phone and you can get it before general release if you call their business number.

When they asked I told them I was self-employed and I was offered the phone for free on a 12 month £28/month contract.

Now I sit and wait, happy hunting!

I got a rubbish deal from O2 even though I have been on there top package for over 4 years (O2 MAX).

I couldn't get anything and I tried... so in the end I got the Online 45 (1200 mins, 1000 texts) + data bolt on for £45 (18 month contract). Phone + GPS software was free.

So basically I get the same as a new customer so nothing for loyality for free.

I'm tempted to sent it back within 14 days and go somewhere else.

I just ordered mine this afternoon, been an O2 customer for 7 years, I managed to get the Orbit 2 free on:

800mins, 500 text, data bolt on all for £32 a month, 18 month contract. (£40 p/m with 20% discount). I'm tempted to send it back too after reading some of the other guy's deals!

I would have accepted your deal! Not sure why some people are getting better deals that others. I have been on the O2 Max £75 a month plan for 4 years.

I think you get 14 days to return the phone, so I might do that if better offers come out within that time.

I think I got an OK deal. Not sure if the minutes are rollover? They used to be on my old tariff! That's good you got the sat nav too. Is that just software? I heard google maps works quite well too, I'm new to WM so still learning it all!

I was wondering if there is a way for me to buy O2 XDA Orbit 2. I live in the US, and of course I can't have a contract with O2, but Orbit 2 is much cooler than Touch Cruise!

I hope there is a way...

I could get you a German Orbit 2. My GF is from Philadelphia and her family is still over there. Her father is a business guy and jets back and forth between Europe and the US. I could give him a package and tell him to send it to you. Price would be 499 Euros plus shipping (inside US) of course. If German is to you what cooking is to me ;) you could always flash it with an English ROM, be it a Touch Cruise or UK Orbit 2.

Question@all: In a German forum I found pictures of the UK version of the Orbit 2. It looked quite different, bigger screen and no O2 logo at the bottom. Can anyone confirm? Can anyone provide a picture of his UK orbit 2?
And the German Orbit 2 ROM features the same stuff as the Touch Cruise except a different default theme and preconfigured O2 data connection stuff. Weird you Englishmen have to suffer some O2 branding :(
Forgot to add: TomTom including Germany, Switzerland and Austria plus Major Roads of Western Europe is included, for free. Other maps, covering almost the whole world including US and parts of Asia can be found online...

The review at http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/4wm-reviews-hardware/14241-o2-xda-orbit-2-review.html reckons that CoPilot is in the ROM. So I dunno whether it's an optional extra anyway, or whether they all come with it. Sure they could give you the phone without the maps (which I think comes supplied on a 1gb SD card), but I wouldn't be surprised if they *all* come with CoPilot.

I am in a slightly different position, as I am on the All Time 200 Pay Upfront tariff (basically I pay £149 a year for 200 anytime minutes, but no texts). I'm happy with this - I only ever use about 20 mins a month - so don't want to change my tariff, but would like to upgrade my Orbit (which I use mainly as a PDA and GPS device) to an Orbit 2.

I rang O2 yesterday on 0870 5860860 and was told that their systems were down and to ring back today on 0800 0321402. Rang that number today and got an automated message saying that I should ring 0870 5860860 instead. Rang that number and was told that the phone was out of stock and that I need to ring back tomorrow, as they are unable to take orders for Out Of Stock phones. Was also told that the handset would cost me £250.

Rang back immediately, got a different operator and was put through to the "Specialist Team" (as I am on such an old tariff). They said that their systems were down and to ring back in an hour.

Was fed up, so went to my local O2 shop. They had one in stock, but when they went to find out the price it had mysteriously been reserved by somebody and was no longer available - but I can have it tomorrow if it's not collected. They also quoted me £250.

I've been an O2 customer for 12 years, and am well hacked off at how badly they are handling the release of this handset.

I was also on an older tariff, (Can't remember the name, but £25 pm).
Rang up requesting a PAC code yesterday
Of course the usual questions kick in from a retentions point of view.
I was fairly adamant that I was going (to save money), but asked "out of curiosity" whether the new XDA orbit 2 was in.
Fairly quickly negotiated (by reference to the T-Mobile PAYG and W&W20 (at £22.50/month) to the following position, which I accepted.

Free Orbit 2 (w/o Sat Nav SW), 25pm 200mins/400t/Web-bolt-on + £50 cashback (which brought the rental down to 22.25 on average if I can be bothered to claim. Not too interested in the minutes / texts, but the web bolt on was key.

Hmm - not so lucky here. Have been an O2 customer for 8 years (ish) - my wife uses the phone so is only on Online 15 tariff. Spoke to sales / upgrades who offered me the handset only at £329 or if I wanted to change contract, would be £249 on £20 monthly (18 months). Oh and I'd have to buy out my current contract which runs until December so another £120.

I don't think so - will be looking for a private sale of the O2 or HTC Cruise now.

Not that impressed with O2 TBH.

I was a new O2 customer, and got the phone for free also a spare (£20) charger free. This was on a £35 a month for 18 months contract, with 600mins and 500 texts. This saved me a £50+ quid over ordering online, well worth a trip to the O2 store!

picked mine up last night and I love it already before Ive had much chance to play!
much lighter and a bit thinner than my Orange SPV M600. touchFLO is lovely and it seems nippy enough. O2's rom isnt even that bad... im used to Orange's shockers though!

Result!

Rang O2 Upgrades this morning and they wanted £269.99 without CoPilot or £319.99 with CoPilot.

I politely declined this kind offer and went back to my O2 shop, where they sold me the Orbit 2 with CoPilot software for £199.99.

I'm a happy bunny!

A few updates to the above -
technically I was with (and still am with) Carphone Warehouse, not directly with 02, and it was carphone warehouse customer services that I dealt.
The package arrived today (10:30 AM, only 20hrs after ordering)
Good news is that all of the SatNav SW and accessories (car holder/charger/memory card, Copilot disk) were in the pack
Bad news is that they forgot to include the 3G compatible SIM, but having spoken to them on the phone, they've agreed to send out a new one.

I got my Orbit 2 delivered today after hageling hard for around 50 mins on Monday night. I visted the store to see if it was available and what price I would have to pay. Was told I was on upgrade band C as I only pay around £20 a month (previously my bills were way more than that which is why my original orbit was free) was quoted £240 and I was like

Rang up that evening and hageled harder than I ever have before in my life, the guy was adament on my tariff his system would only allow a reduction in the cost of handset to around £180 no free bolt ons nothing. After constant thats not good enough.. Ive been with O2 for 5 years etc and having been put on hold a good couple of times In the end he agreed to free phone 600 mins 500 txts Internet bolt on and copiolot for £35 pcm with £5 discount so £30 pcm basically, wouldnt budge any further. I was happy with that because my bills end up around that price anyway but with only 75 mins and 40 txts or something ridiculous like that.

Im happy I've got my new toy, much more proffesional packing compared to the orbit and loads more included too.

Are you meant to get a 3G sim with your upgrade? I never thought about that until I saw r_southampton's post Ive not been sent one either

Hi

there are better deals to be had! I managed free phone with sat nav and 200 mins/400txt on online texter 25 - normally £25 but £10 discount on 18mth contract.

After reading the posts above I am well pleased as I was only paying £15 for last year as out of country most of time in Romania/Serbia. Phone arrived next day - but has to follow me out here now!

So well worth spending the time haggling! Now I need to sell my old Orbit ....

Or does the same tariff have to be used throughout the entire 18 months?

The billing receipt for my deal had a line item for a 3G sim. However, as to whether you need one or not - it depends (I think) on whether you already have a 3g sim. In my case, they'd forgotten to pack the SIM, so I swapped in my old one - which worked, but only in GSM mode. After I phoned, they agreed they'd made a mistake, and credited me with a new 3G sim which I picked up from Carphone Warehouse last night.

Note:
==============================
WARNING RE WEB BOLT ON / UPGRADES.
when discussing the absent Sim with customer services, I thought I'd confirm the web bolt on. "Oh, yes it's included" she said... "It will be active from your next billing cycle - 19th Feb". "What's my current cost / Mb", I said - "£3/Mb" was the answer. Upon which I insisted that data was disabled until the 19th of Feb.
3G web-browsing at £3/MB isn't for me!!

I think that I must have got a good deal, on an existing £25 p/m online deal, I called through to the retentions team and was offered the upgrade for £250! No thanks I replied quickly and with no movement on prices or tarrifs I requested my PAC code. Same day went in to my local O2 store where they had it in stock and charged me £49 for the Orbit II and stayed on my existing tariff (aparently I am a band 'E' customer whatever that means! So I recieved a discount.) so now I am playing with my new toy. Good Deal - what do you think?

DMAND
13th February 2008, 09:14 PM
The bands are according to how much your bills come out to each month I think, with A being the lowest, last year I was on F when I paid around an average £55ish a month even though my tariff was £25.

So not a bad deal I'd say, Im surprised that the retentions people couldnt do it for less yet in store you got it for £50

Upgrade. I kept calling them asking for a deal for a couple of weeks, they wanted £80 + I think they knew I was trying it on. In the end I decided that it wasn't worth the £80 + 18 month contract so I told they guy I didn't want any deals i just wanted to cancel as I was happy with my old Orbit 1. That’s when he came up with that deal but still wanted £30 for the unit. I said if it was for free I would go for it he spoke to his manager and okayed it.
