Hi,

I have Windows XP and my start menu and desktop has disappeared. I can get programs by getting up the task manager.

Does anybody have idea as to how I might fix this?

Thanks in advance guys.

This happens when explorer crushes.
If you don't want to reboot, run explorer /desktop and it should solve your problem.

I have tried rebooting, and it doesn't solve the problem.

I've also tried running explorer and explorer /desktop from the task manager. The start menu bar appears for around 30 seconds and then disappears. While it does appear, I am unable to click on the Start button. I hover over the button and an hour glass appears. The start menu then disappears.

Here are the screenshots from my process explorer. Note that I do not use the standard task manager.

f*ck me that's a lot of processes! My laptop currently has 23 processes running :D

sorry I don't have any good advice, except maybe try system restore?

I guess you already know what cdrom_mon.exe and the other ones with no description/company name are. (I don't) If not, maybe check them?

Holy shit. I killed all unknown processes and ran explorer from the task manager and was able to get it to work. I couldn't pinpoint the exact process as I killed a whole load. I have to do this everytime I reboot, but its a good enough workaround me right now.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys.

http://www.processlibrary.com/
here you can go over the processes 1 by 1 to see what they are
if you want to kill one forever doing a search for it's name on the disk
and renaming it to blablaname.exe/dll or what ever to blablaname.exe.old

it cant start up but of cause if it's vital nor can windows :P
