View Full Version : dcd's 2.x ROM + GPS + time reset

Anyone else getting their System Time on the Titan reset everytime the GPS is used?

Now this may only be related to Garmin XT software. But so far i have tried dcd 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 ROM and all have this issue.

THis is what happens:

1) Start Garmin XT - everthing is OK
2) GPS gets a lock (indoors)
3) At this point is when the system time resets to 7PM (Feb2,2,2008)

That happens every single time the GPS is first accessed.
I can manually Upate the time from the network and it sets correctly, even while Garmin XT is running.
The time stays this way until the Titan turns off (timeouts).
So when i hit the power button. The time resets again as soon as the GPS starts to lock into the Cell towers (AGPS)

I don't have any other GPS apps to try. SO i don't know if its a GPS radio issue.
Basically it looks like the GPS driver or software accesses the system time (probably form the cells towers) and it resets.

Garmin is the culprit, it doesn't happen with any other GPS software.

This same exact thing was happening to me. I then did a HARD reset by pressing the 2 soft buttons while powering up and then hitting R on the keyboard. I went through the setup wizard for WinMo 6.1 (I'm using dcd 2.2.0) and immediately installed Garmin Mobile XT. Got a sat fix in a few seconds and my time never reset.

I highly doubt Garmin Mobile XT is the culprit. I killed all apps in Task Manager before doing the hard reset and my phone was constantly resetting the time. And after the hard reset and installing ONLY Mobile XT I don't have the problem. I did not install QuickGPS this time and noticed that it runs as a background process.

This was also happening when I would launch Holux GPS Viewer and has even happened to me when I had no GPS software running at all. So either Garmin is installing some sort of filter driver or runs some sort of background process that is completely not obvious to me... or it's just not Garmin and is something else we all have in common.

Are you sure about that? I haven't yet tried to do the hard reset after updating the ROM. Hard Reset wipes out everything right?
Which soft keys did you push when power up?
What exactly is the procedure?

THis is what I found out so far. I would say that it is indeed Garmin XT that is causing the issue, or at leat the Intermediate Driver that its using.

Basically its like this:
Garmin XT receives a GPS lock and syncs the GPS time with the Titan's System Time.

When Garmin XT locks onto only the AGPS it syncs with what im assuming is the Cell phone tower time or partial time if it can't triangulate. Hence the incorrect system time sync.

However, if you are outside and have actual Satellite GPS locks, Garmin will sync to the correct time.

So the temporarly work around is either.
Turn on Garmin while your outside and have your phone ON (not in standby). So keep it ON for a couple mins, before starting Garmin XT. This will pickup GPS not just AGPS.

or Start Garmin XT as usual.
At which point your System Clock will change with the Sync to an incorrect time. Now wait for full GPS Sat lock (3D is best). At this point DISABLE GPS (within Garmin XT) and renable it again. And BAMM...just like that the clock will change to the correct time, since it has this info from the GPS Sats.

So my conclusion is that Garmin Syncs the Titan's System Time to GPS time. BUt like i said it could just be the intermediate driver.

Note that i tried Google Mobile with GPS and did not have this issue.

So the real question should be, is how to Disable Garmin from Syncing our System Time?? ANyone?

Your right on CannonBaller. I'm seeing the exact same behavior. But now that I think about it, I've been running Garmin Mobile 10 (Garmin with the external GPS) for 6 months and I never had a problem until I upgraded to the ROM from here (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=16806). This isn't a cooked ROM because I didn't need to unlock my phone to install it. I'm not too familiar with kitchens and cooking so I kept it simple and just installed the basic one that came out in January.

But if we're seeing the same behavior from WM61 ROMs then that tells me that it's something in the WM ROMS. Would you agree? I hope this isn't the case because that may mean that the official HTC ROM could have the same problem and that would SUCK!

it is Garmin XT. Same thing happens to me. What I have done is I run quickgps to get a lock, close that app and then open garmin and it gets a lock within a few seconds. If you run garmin without getting a lock on your location within a certain amount of time (not sure the amount) it will reset your clock as well as the date. Then when you update your phone to the correct date/time you will receive all the appointment and alarm notifications that occurred between the date and time it went back to and the current date and time.

In conclusion it is easiest for me to just get a gps lock with quickgps and then load garmin.

I think you mean GPSViewer not QuickGPS. QuickGPS downloads EE data from the internet.

I too have resorted to getting a fix with GPSViewer before loading Mobile XT and have had great results. I searched for a registry key or something to disable time sync but I didn't find anything.

Maybe someone can write a script that automates this. I tried writing on that automatically syncs the clock to the cell network (via settings on the comm manager) after MobileXT is closed, but the RunWait command wasn't working properly.

This same issue, except with Garmin Que is in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368035

Apparently there is a setting to fix it via Menu>System Setup>General Tab>Uncheck the Synchronize system clock, but that menu option isn't in Mobile XT. It does give hope that there might be a registry setting for it somewhere though.

Has anyone asked Garmin about this?

Has anyone asked Garmin about this?

I sent them something a couple weeks ago and this was the dialog:

Me:

I've had both Garmin Mobile 10 as well as Garmin Mobile XT and both are
resetting my system clock on my phone to 7pm, 5 days ago. Very
frustrating because every time I go to use Garmin, I have to reset the
system time.
I'm running:
Garmin Mobile XT 4.10.40wp
Window Mobile 6 Professional CE OS 5.2.1622

any ideas? Thanks

Them:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

This is the first that we have heard of the Garmin software resetting
the date and time in a Cell phone. They are typically updated by the
Cell towers of the phone provider. If this device also has a built in
gps, it may be resetting your date and time.

I recommend contacting the manufacturer of the phone to make sure it is
completely up to date.

If you continue to experience this issue, feel free to call our 800
number listed below for more information.

With Best Regards,

Anthony L

I'm still hoping that the official ROM will fix this. I didn't have this problem when I was using an external GPS receiver. I have a friend who has a Tilt using Garmin XT and her time does not reset.

This leads me to believe the problem lies within the pre-release ROM that opened up the internal GPS for my Mogul. I know all signs are pointing to Garmin but I haven't been convinced that it isn't the new ROM that's the culprit. If you know it's the Garmin software, please explain to me how it is so I can move on in life. =)

oops, you are right. i use gps viewer to get a fix first and then close out of that and open garmin xt up. kind of a pita. ive got a garmin standalone and im used to that interface. i still might switch to tomtom but i would like to see an official radio release first

I have the same problem with Garmin using internal gps.

I'm using DCD's 2.0.0, which is wm6.

It resets my clock to 4pm, but then resets back to the correct time usually within a half hour.

Since using the internal gps with Garmin requires a hack, maybe it's related to this.

I also use TomTom 6 and Sprint Nav, and don't have this problem with either of those programs.

Garmin has better graphics though..

I'd like to 2nd, 3rd, whatever the issue with garmin xt using the internal gps and resetting / changing the time.

very annoying... however garmin is simply so much better than tomtom that I will suffer through it until I can find a workaround.

I checked Garmin's site last night just to see if they had any new updates and came across this:

Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile Ver. 4.20.20w as of Feb 26, 2008 Download (http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00).

On their initial software update (http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp) page, it says last update for Garmin Mobile XT for Smartphones was November 14, 2007. But if you click on the link you see more recent updates.

I downloaded and installed it. I've soft resetted and booted up Garmin without booting up any helper GPS app (instantGPS, GPSViewer) and my time hasn't changed since I installed this version. I've been using it all morning and it hasn't changed once.

I'm running:
ROM version 3.16.651.0 (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=16806)
Garmin 4.20.20wp

my time isn't changing =)

That update fixed my time issue as well. I also seem to get more SATs much faster. I soft reset my phone and fired up Garmin. I instantly had a lock on 8 SATs. Nice find.

I tried this new version today. My clock still changes before I get a fix (no bars in the GPS strength meter in the main menu), but it does re-update to the correct time after it gets a fix. Better than before, but problem NOT solved.

Its definetly the Garmin XT software. It updates the system time when it gets a GPS lock.

But there is a FIX.
There is a new version of GarminXT on the garmin site.

This new version actually lets your settings stay on COM4 instead of always defaulting to the Intermediate Driver.

However you will loose aGPS. So won't work indoors.
In Com4 mode, Garmin waits for actuall GPS Sats. When it gets a lock the time is correct, updating the system clock is ok.

to Recap
1) download GarminXt v4.20.20w
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3389

2) Make sure your GPS setting in Garmin is set to the COM4 port instead of Intermediate Driver.

Thats it problem solved. (minus aGPS)

Latest version of Garmin XT is still resetting the system time for me. Any tips?

Also, Garmin can't find my GPS when I set it to com4, though it does find it when I set it to the intermediate driver.

Any advice or guidance (pardon the pun) would be most helpful.

Hmm. I'm running dcd 3.0.1, I can't run the official release since I'm on Verizon. I'm also running Garmin 4.20.30wp.

I'm observing some other strange behavior that might be related. When I start Garmin, I don't usually get a satellite lock for a minute or so. Then, a couple of things happen in rapid succession. First, the phone vibrates with an alert. At the same time, a new icon appears in the top section of the screen, next to the wi-fi connector icon (what do you call that part of the screen, anyhow?). Also, a totally blank notification window pops up, and the label of the left softkey changes to "Hide". Also, about at this point, I get a satellite lock, and the time changes to 8:00 pm.

I can hit Hide to get rid of the notification message, but the left softkey now reads "Notification" and that won't go away no matter how often or how energetically I hit it.

Any insight would be most appreciated, it'd be really nice to get this to a point where it's usable.

I was on Garmin XT 4.20.20wp and everything was fine. Upgraded to 4.20.30wp, and a lot of strange things started happening as well. GPS also didn't seem to work as well once I went to DCD 3.0.1. I ended up going back to 4.20.20wp, and things were a lot better. I would suggest going back to 4.20.20wp. No more time resets.

I would also recommend doing a Clear Storage. You will have to reprogram your phone afterwards, and you might have to call Verizon to be able to dial and access data again, but after doing that, things on my phone seemed a lot better.

Clear Storge is like performing a hard reset. It just seems that it actually wipes the memory, whereas a hard reset just overwrites files.

I don't know about the storage card, but I always take it out my Micro SD card whenever I perform a hard reset or a Clear Storage.

Just make sure you realize that a Clear Storage will most likely result in a call to Verizon. It did for me and a friend, but we had no problems with getting everything sorted.

Yes stay with version 4.20.20wp.

Do NOT upgrade to 4.20.30wp
It just brings back all the other problems.

What the heck is is up garmin....how many people called them about this arleady.
