View Full Version : Nervous GPS?

Hi all:

I previously owned a mio A701 (sirf3 gps). I compared the GPS in the Touch Cruise and in the A701 by launching tomtom in both of them and by putting them next to a window in home.

I noticed that the bars which showed the strength of the signal of each satellite seemed to go up and down quickly and to turn from blue to grey and from grey to blue also quite quickly compared to the MIO A701, which seemed to have a more stable behaviour.

¿Is this normal?

I have also done a test when I was going to work. In this case, the bars seemed to have a more normal behaviour, but the TC didn't get all the satellites which there were in the view.

I am using COM4, 115000 bauds. I am not using the tomtom bundled with the TC.

¡Thanks for your help!

This is normal as Sirf Star III chipset is much better than Qualcomm's.

Well, I had read in some reviews that for normal user, they were almost the same (qualcomm and sirf3). That's why I am a little surprised.

I haven't tested the performance inside mi city, but this worries me a little

You should use 4800 bauds.

You should use 4800 bauds.
What is the benefit of 4800 bauds? Is there a page where you can get tipps for enhancing the gps positioning with qualcomm?

I only now that this is the recommended setting for Tomtom and MIO Map.

You should use 4800 bauds.

Thank you for the tip. I had read in another forum, that some people had tested the device with several settings, and that the best results had been obtained with that setting (115000). I used it without thinking, although it seemed strange since 4800 was the setting I used with my previous device.

I'll try 4800 and I will test the TC inside the city to see how it performs...

¡Thanks!

Raúl.

Nothing will change with 4800 baud rate.

The Qualcomm chipset isn't really good, but for navigation in the car it's ok. With QuickGPS the fix is fast and well, thats all that matters for me.

Sirf3 is better than Qualcomm but not much better... I have 3 gps solutions - Dell Axim X51v with Holux GPSSlim236 bluetooth GPS reciever based on Sirf3 + Eten X800 with Sirf3 build in and obviously TC..
I compared all three of them - Qualcomm one is a little bit more nervous that other but it does the job without any problems..
So no need to worry..
