View Full Version : [SOLVED] 2.2 DCD ROM and Data now drops to 1x??

Carrier: Alltel
Started with WM5 ROM.
Flashed to DCD's 2.1 WM6 ROM last week, no issues noted.
Yesterday flashed to 2.2 WM6.1 ROM and now whenever I get a data session going in a strong EVDO area I get dropped down to 1x when the data session finishes connecting?
I've moved back to 2.1, used no2chems 6.1 ROM and back to DCD's 6.1 ROM. Same problem all around now.
Radio problem maybe? Or user? If radio, anyone get me a link to the original 1.4?
Thanks in advance if anyone has any tips, I've tried looking around but only find people with MMS or other issues.
---------------------
This solution apparently only works for Alltel customers, if anyone finds solutions for Sprint/Verizon/Telus I'll add the solution to this post.
ALLTEL:
1. Enter EPST (##778), Edit (password= 000000).
2. View Info (left soft key).
3. Choose the "Security" item.
4. In the "HDR AN AUTH Password(LONG)" field, click to highlight.
5. Menu (right soft key), Edit
6. In the "Value" field, enter your Hex ESN (make sure all characters are CAPITAL, lowercase will FAIL).
7. Ok. Menu. Ok to save, then reset.
--------------------------------------------
SPRINT:
Hey in case you guys are still having problems with this, I can tell you what worked for me with Sprint.
You'll need your unlock code, if you don't have it, you've gotta get it from either Sprint or from one of the tutorials i've seen floating around here and other forums.
1. Sync your titan to back up your data.
2. ##786# Choose edit, enter your unlock code, then choose menu>restore. This will reset everything to factory settings.
3. Reset
3. ##UNLOCKCODE# Again choose edit.
4. Both MDN and MSID should be your wireless number (this was confirmed by Sprint T2 tech support)
5. Reset
6. Call your voicemail to make sure your phone service is working.
7. Connect to the internet. It should trigger IOTA/Provisioning and then EVDO should be working.
8. Resync your shit and you're good to go.
Hope this helps, it worked for me.

I think with Alltel you get 1x when roaming. Do *228 option 3 < Thats to activate your phone if you haven't already
Then do *228 option 2 to update your roaming preferences which ridded me of roaming in coverage area!

Thanks for the response, I've been through that already and same results... :(
I even went back to the stock Alltel ROM and Radio, same thing.
With PRL 30029 AND 40029... :(
Oh well, I'll figure something out as I love the speed of DCD's 2.2!!!!

Did you check Start->Settings->Personal->Phone->Services->Mode of Operation to make sure it wasn't set to 1X only? I think that was the default setting on my phone.

I had this same problem, and then I reflashed with the 3.16 sprint rom twice and it went away.

Appreciate the responses, but I don't have the "Mode of Operation" on my Alltel 6800. And I've reflashed all kinds of ROMs with no luck... :(
Thanks for the ideas though...

With the newest Advanced Config app, you can unhide the "mode of operation" option in there. I got it from here somewhere, do a search. I doubt this is your issue. I had this problem yesterday with Sprint. I got data in 1xRTT, but not EVDO. I ended up calling Sprint and they had to deactivate and reactivate the internet services on my phone. Immediately it worked like a champ.

I had this problem also and was able to take care of it by going into EPST (##778) and going under the security settings and putting the ESN Hex Value of Your Phone under the HDR Password. Mine got lost whenever I upgraded the radio. This will allow you to lock back onto the EVDO network

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
That did the trick (after I did it a second time and made the letters capital) and now I'm cruising EVDO style!!
Thanks!!!!

What did you guys have in that slot before you added your esn hex number?

the password you need is unlock code you can only get from sprint.
i also had the weird characters, i edited these out with my esn hex as mentioned and now i cant get a data connection at all, i get an error that i cannot connect. Anyone with any idea on what i can do?
I thought of downgrading the radio and then installing this one again and starting from scratch any better ideas?

My HDR password is also extended ASCII characters, has been for every ROM version I have run, and I get EVDO and on the Internet as well. I thought that was a problem when I had no data connection from a previous ROM, but it wasn't.
What worked for me was to go all the way back to the official 2.17, then to the leaked 3.16, etc. I made sure everything was set up and working properly on each version before moving on to another ROM.

Again, I'm on Alltel so maybe for some unknown reason there is more to it for you Sprint users.
But, my MDR Password field was goofy stuff, deleted it and put in my Hex ESN in ALL CAPITALs and I stay at EVDO when my data connection is made now.

yes i also have a bunch of giberish in there. i am afraid to change it becuase there will be no way for me to put that giberish back in there with all those weird looking characters.
i found the edit password which was a bunch of 00000 as many as the field would take

I had the same problem with not being able to connect to evdo after about a week on the new rom. I ended up calling advanced tech support for Sprint. They told me that I had an older plan before evdo. I have every feature you can get including phone as modem for 12$ a month because I tried to turn off the service and they cut me a deal to keep me on board.
The tech explained to me that there are alot of people who dont have the evdo flag on the account they have. He knew I had rev A but didnt care he was pretty cool. He explained that alot of people are using the new radio and setting off alarms on Sprints side. Once the alarms go off you are kicked from the network. He told me flashing the radio might fix it temp but it would come back soon. In the end they just added the evdo to my account and flagged me for the network. Now I get flawless data and all of my download problems are fixed.

Use this to get you MSL password.
Make sure you run it on your PPC and then enter your HEX ESN in capitals and you will get your password. no need to call provider ;)
Update: I tried changing my HDR password to my ESN in HEX...but it seem to permanently force my connection as 1X.
Changed back and have EVDO again. But it seems odd how it does randomly change to 1X in a EVDO area. (I am with Telus BTW)

I have Alltel and not Sprint so I am sure Sprint uses different settings of course. I am sure after some massive searching the correct HDR password can be found hopefully. Just by reading the forums it appears that Sprint sometimes can be difficult configuring phones.

ok here goes. my data connection while on the net did not drop to 1x from evo. it stayed at evo. i did the "procedure"
1.) dialed ##778 then pressed send, it brought up the view, edit , cancel screen.
2.) clicked edit
3.) entered 000000 for the password
4.) went to view security and edited
5.) HDR ... ... password to my hex esn
6.) reset.
I didnt notice anything different. I guess it is working the way it is supposed to from the get go. i thought i had this problem but i may never have had it.

Has anyone tried doing an RTN reset? For those who don't know, it is a hard reset that also erases all phone provisioning data. Maybe do that than reprogram and IOTA? Anyone wanna try? I would but I don't have EV in my area so I wont know if it fixes the problem. Only try if you know your MSL and MSID to reprogram it.

Alot of us that did not have evdo phones before now are going to have to get Sprint to add the evdo flag to the account. It does not cost more. Its just an edit. 2 of my friends at work had to do it today and they are working fine.

No that didnt change for me PPP password is blank what's weird is that my HDR password changed back to those weird ASCII characters.
One more thing I noticed is that my MSID changed after doing the reset to 0000003512, but I am glad it fix my problem.

Am on dcd2.2.0 rom and 3.27 radio too.
Is this the reason my web pages hand after loading a few KB on PIE? Also, I was listening to stream radio on GS player - works fine for about two songs and then it goes dead. I have turn the phone radio off and back and then re-launch the player so it gets the data connection established. My phone does not drop to 1x when browsing though. Stays on EV on top of the screen.
If calling sprint and asking them to add the flag is gonna fix it - am calling right away. Pls confirm. I dont want to alarm them that I have rev.a unless I have too :D

The problem is just that this radio ROM is buggy. Also, PIE does not seem to work very well in WM6.1.

Hi I have this same issue.
i typed ##778 send

do i find the hdr password under the edit?
when i choose edit, i get a password prompt and i do not know the password.
i am on dcd rom 2.2.0
So I too had the same issues and after reading all the threads on here and ppcgeeks... I decided to call Verizon. There is something in the 3.27 Radio that locks onto the Sprint towers. I was told that as long as you dial *228 and don't get the option to program you're phone, you are not on the Verizon towers. I even drove around to where the tech told me a Verizon tower was and no go!
This was all after resetting my A-Key, which is a VERY long number they generate... kinda like a certificate, and various troubleshooting.
So, I've given up and going back to the default ROMs. Has ANYONE on Verizon been able to get the 3.27 Radio and maybe DCDs kitchen to work!? I see lots of Sprint users with NO issue. (which makes sense after what I've experience)
Kudos to anyone who knows of a 3.27 radio that works truly works with Verizon!!!
