I have been reading around the forums. As always when a device gets popular, alot of stuff for it surfaces and it becomes a little cluttered. I wanted to create one thread with general information regarding flashing and the many different versions of the Elf(in), inorder to minimize frustration and make it easy for all ELF(in) users. Please, input would be wonderful. I will post what I know, and links and information in the first post.
1) Versions of the Elf(in):
The Elf is the GSM version of the touch. For the CDMA2000 version of the touch please visit the VOGUE Forum. There are currently two variations.
-The first and original is the ROM128/RAM64 version or the Elf/Touch or the P3450
-The second or "enhanced" is the ROM256/RAM128 verison or Elfin/Touch XL or the P3452
FYI Code names are actually not an indication of the model at all. Code names will only tell you the manufacturing cycle/revision or regional information.
Currently there is the:
Elf010xx
Elf020xx
Elf030xx
200 and 300 seem to be coming from Europe mostly.
NOTE:Please correct me if I am wrong.
The next sections will cover basic operations that can be done to the phone. Visit http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=FAQ, for descriptions of what the terms I use mean.
2) SIM Unlocking Phone
In order to use the phone universally across different carriers it must be SIM unlocked. This is different from CID unlocking which is what allows you to flash the phone with different ROMS. SIM unlocking was greatfully provided by rishi, and can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328221.
The instructions are easy to follow and can be done in minutes without any problems across all versions of the Elf(in).
3) CID Unlocking
This is necessary to flash an unsigned or no-vendor ROM to your phone, a.k.a cooked ROMS. Some cooked ROMS provide their own CID unlocking and I recommend you use those. Otherwise there is a general CID unlocking greatfully provided by POF here at this link:
For both Elf and Elfin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320155
Note: For the elfin, you should place Cert and EnabeRapi files on your phone. Run the cabs. Install them and you should cancel on step 3 !!!of the process inorder for it to work.
Update: Just for Elfin. DJVW has made another USPL,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366875
4) Flashing ROMS
Flashing is a generally easy and painless process thanks to the hardworking developers here at XDA_Developers. There are many different cooked ROMS available and of course official ROMS.
Information about ROMS:
Now a full ROM code has SPL, IPL, EXT_ROM & RADIO and the actual ROM Code itself. These components can be installed in one package or seperatley.
For new users ROMS come in three flavours:
a)Original, non-cooked ROMS straight from the manufacturer. These ROMS are fully packed and contain all necessary parts to function. Comes with you phone and is generally more restricted then custom ROMS.
b)Vanilla which is a clean basic and nearly empty ROM. These ROMS tend not to include most of the above mentioned components, but some do.
c) customised ROMs by users who use a "Kitchen". They provide you with the IPL, SPL, Radio(usually standard across device), and Ext_Rom.
currently there are two popular ones in this forum for the Elf(in), WM 6.1 (not sure which build):
-Elves 5.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364901
- ShadowS 2.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363637
Currently a WM 6.1 is being developed for the Elf(in), but a version has already been leaked and many developers here have Roms based off of this.
For ORIGINAL OEM ROMS please visit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1676118#post1676118
Tips for Flashing:
1) Remove Sim Card and Memory Card inorder to avoid mishaps and possible interruptions to the flashing process or damage to the cards.
2) Follow step by step instructions. Although most flashing is standard across WM phones some different things have to be done for different ROMS and phones.
3) Make a back up of your original ROM, using one of the many utilities provided around. I will post up links to some of those soon.
4) Make up a back up of all your contents, and contacts because a flash erases everything stored to the phone's ROM memory.
5) Make sure nothing distrubs the flash process and it is being done from a computer with an uninterruptable power supply, so you do not damage or brick your phone.
Please tell me any thing else to add, correct my mistakes, as well as provide me links to ROMs here and from other sites.
UPDATES:
This section has officially been moved to the Wiki, but this thread is still open for questions. Please ask any general questions you have as I am compiling an FAQ. Remember its just like your teacher says in school, "There is no stupid questions. Ask because some one else might have the same question". That crap doesn't fly here though. Use the search function first, then ask away!
Thanks!

Please any Mods, if you see this thread as useful, sticky it,
1) to help new people to the phone like I was about a week ago
2) inorder for me to not search for it every time I want to update. I know I made a subscription to the thread, but it would nice to just come on and find it. :p

NOTE:Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you for your post which I honestly believe is very useful to many people.
I am just not sure if the P3452 is Elf0101 because the label on my device (under the battery) indicate Elf0100 - P3452.
May be some other members can confirm that as well.
Best regards.

Yep, I already found out that the number "Elf0xxx" is a production phase number or a regional number, and has nothing to do with the version of the phone. I have the Touch XL and I am in NA, and I have an Elf101. Someone else may have the Touch XL in another part of the world with another number. So these numbers don't indicate anything.

If you read the Wiki I explain that these model numbers are production codes. They talk about the "time" or the production phase of your specific handset. Usually production happens, stops, a revision happens to the phone, then production begins and so forth, and these are used for regional and production phase information. Has nothing to do with actual phone.

Hey OH! Vibranze there is no unique identifier for the Elfin. Essentially the Elf and the ELfin are the same phone, but HTC decided to slap a little more memory in the Elfin.
The model numbers are different on the other hand. The Elf is the P3450 and the Elfin is the P3452.

Apps and Addons are so many it would be impossible to do so. You can find almost any PPC app and use it on the touch. You yourself could undertake the challenge and begin compiling a list of links for useful touch apps.

You have a variant of the Elfin. Visit the Wiki and download the WWE original Dopod Asia Rom, and attempt flashing it. If you have the original SPL you should be able to use it. You could also ask around the forum for anyone who has the Ted Baker edition of the ROM, since I am not sure where you can find it.

Thank you so much for posting this rafiki6, very nice!
Two questions remaining:
- if I follow all the instructions to dump my original ROM, does that dump include all components (IPL, SPL, Radio, EXT-ROM and general ROM) ?
- if I flash USPL and then proceed to flash an original ROM, the SPL will have been overwritten. So I need to reflash USPL to flash again, right?

Hey Fritti, two good questions that I will actually include in the guide. I will start an FAQ section since I have getting alot of these.
Any way short answer, your rom dump generally contains only the ROM components. So it does not contain the SPL or IPL. It will not include the ext-ROM either, if you use the method that is written for the Elf, but there are other more advanced methods which do include the ext-Rom.
Yes the USPL is replaced by the SPL, if one is included in the ROM. If no SPL is included in the ROM, the USPL will remain there. But that is not always a good thing. I have flashed a ROM and left the USPL there, but the phone was unstable, so I recooked the ROM with an official USPL found with the OEM Rom and it went fine. The USPL is based off of SPL v 1.1.3 I think....and is only meant to get you past the signature check so I suggest making sure the ROM you upgrade has an included SPL.
If you want to avoid using the USPL you can either HardSPL your phone, which is a hardware method, but you should have substantial experience because you can potentially damage your phone.
Thanks and I hope that answers your questions!

Interesting. Although I am sure that the Elfin is infact called the P3452 as a model number, there could be a number of reasons:
1. You are using a ROM which is for both Elf and Elfin and therefore it just assumes one model number that being of the Elf
2. Microsoft has not updated the database used in ActiveSync/ Mobile Device Centre to include the P3452, since it was just like an incremental upgrade and the differences between the devices are only in the memory
3. Some models of the Elfin are actually just the P3450 with upgraded memory, as is the case here in North America.
I am not sure which it would be, but any of those would be my best guess...

Because it's pretty easy to change your Model ID after Flash with a Cab or XML file after flash.

Dear rafiki6,
I would like to flash my new Touchy, and I am following some instructions for "CID unlocking" found in the forum; but I did not understand whether the immediate next step is that I have to start the "ROMUpdateUtility.exe" or the "EnterBootloader.exe" (both files included in any "upgraded ROM zip files").
Many thanks for your support.
rafiki6
18-03-2008, 12:34 AM
For CID Unlocking, you will have to load the two included files, Cert_SPC.cab and enableRAPI.cab on to you phone. Run and install both of these files. Then you must run the elf-uspl.exe file provided with the CID unlocker. It will take you to step 1. Press enter. Then step 2. If you own an Elfin version of the Touch, instead of hitting enter after the second step, cancel. If you own an Elf just hit enter.
Once you are done, your phone should be in a white screen while still connected to your computer. Then you can load any Rom, but running the Rom update utility for it. Thats it!
If your phone has been HardSPL or has issues, you can use the EnterBootloader.exe to troubleshoot or flash. All that will do is take you to he RUU boot loader screen so you can flash from their, but using the USPL and the temporary CID unlocking accomplishes the same thing through a much safer and software method.

Hey all-
I've been lurking in these forums the last week or two as I researched phones, learning about terms like 'hard spl' and 'cooking ROMs'. I have come to the conclusion that, other than prepackaging popular add-ons, custom ROMS always seem to help the phone run faster.
I am, however, not looking for too many bells and whistles; rather, I'd like to add my own as I learn more. In addition, I am not a Blackberry-esque power user. I doubt I'll even get a data plan, but I have a handful of very useful WM apps I'll use for work, no internet connectivity required.
I am looking for a fairly simple ROM, something that speeds up the phone (overclocking?), maybe gets rid of some useless factory stuff, etc. My goal is mainly to speed it up, but maybe the ROMS I've found out there (Shadow and Blue Elves) are what I'm looking for- I have only learned what a few of the add-ons are really all about. I need it to be simple, as this is my first mod attempt.
Can anyone help me run through the popular ROMS and tell me how much they improve performance, how easy they are, etc?
I'd plan on doing the HHC package to change the clock and icons, a battery/overclock app, and from there who knows?
Any help is greatly appreciated...
Thanks,
Ryan

Do you know the basics of ROM cooking first? Do you have all the correct tools. Did you download Bepe's kitchen or the one made by Noonski?
Alot of it becomes self explantory, but including and excluding apps is simple and tricky at the same time. You must exclude the apps you do not want from the SYS folder generally.
But you should also make sure that you have the correct registries setup for the ones you have included.

(no one is cooking SPL, IPL into custom roms because it's not save and easier to leave USPL in someone's rom, Real EXT rom isn't being used by anyone anymore)
And we don't want to be giving the idea to New Sous Chefs to make Custom Roms with SPL included ;)

Tips for Flashing:
7) Manually go into Bootloader mode by pressing reset with stylus and then pressing and holding camera button, while not being connected to USB.
Then connect USB and start flashing utility. (don't use this method when flashing CID unlocked USPL)
Above helps prevent a few connection errors on Vista.
8) Re insert SD card after device has reset after hitting the 100% flashing target to prevent Rom of creating New Storage Card folder in the rom and renaming Storage Card to Storage Card 2 (when reg tweaks to move IE cache to SD to safe rom space)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320155 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320155)
Hey Noonski, will do, just give me sometime as I am currently extremely busy with Work and School and had to put alot of things on HOLD.
FYI, I am still working on the General Cooking Guide, but it got postponed by projects and exams.

I
The Elf is the GSM version of the touch.
I just bought a Touch Elf0100 (dutch) in The Netherlands where I live

No I am not angery. If it's not in that list, then just post a request in that thread for a shipped ROM and indicate your CID/Device ID.
