View Full Version : KEYBOARD FIX for NON-English HERALD hardware keyboard v2
GAMBIT999
08-02-2008, 02:07 AM
Every Herald user with a non-English keyboard layout is familiar with this problem:
After flashing a custom ROM the hardware keyboard is remapped with an English layout.
On my German Herald I always lose the QWERTZ layout and the Ää,Öö,Üü letters.
A solution was already posted by papamopps some time ago here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1764074&postcount=7).
It worked well but after every hardreset or new ROM flash I lost the settings and had to repeat the whole procedure again.
Having some active chefs/cooks among us doesn't make things easier:D
So I created a CAB with all necessary modifications which does the job for me.
Papamopps and a few others here already tested my CAB and confirmed it working.
Thanks for that.
Installation:
Copy "[your language]_Herald_Keyboard.cab" anywhere on your device and run it.
Setup will start automatically and asks to reboot.
Please restart your PPC!
Note:
The onscreen keyboard will stay unaffected as I didn't had time to solve it.
The backlight of the hardware keyboard changed to 15 seconds of lighting instead of the standard 5 seconds
Requests are welcome:
If you want me to create a CAB for your language please send my the original or modified copy
of your sym.04xx.txt file located in the \Windows\ folder of your Herald.
I will do my best to provide it as soon as possible.
Added languages:

I have a german Herald and after flashing it with Open Touch rom I applied to Wing<->Heral keyboardfix and then your fix for nin english keyboard.
The umlate ä,ö,ü work fine but most of the special characters are misplaced, ?, !, (, ) are all switched on the keyboard.
Any idea why this is the case?

I've just downloaded the CAB again and installed it again, but no change.
I am using the slimline version as well.
Could it be that the keyboard fix (this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359696)) overwrite the settings because it's autostarted everytime.

I'll search how can I do that and keep you posted.. Thank you in advance!
One more thing, do you know if after that the <Alt> + <Space> button will work? When I was stock, it was used to automatically accent the immediate letter at left .. I don't know where I saw it, but seems that the German Wing/Herald have a similar functionality ...

In the third paragraph on my first post there is a link to papamopps short tutorial on how to edit the sym.xxxx.
It is written for the German keyboard layout, but you should be able to edit the letters to your keyboard mapping.

The sym.0409.txt file is located in the \Windows\ folder of your device.
The best is to connect your PPC to your computer and open ActiveSync (on PC) to explore the Windows-folder on your Herald.
Find and copy the sym.0409.txt to your PC and use editor/notepad to add the missing letters or symboyls to your keyboard layout.
After you edited you should test it yourself by copying it back to the windows folder on your Herald and restart your PPC it should now have the correct layout.
Even if it didn't worked straight away, just make sure you edited the sym.0409.txt correctly and send it to my mail adress I will PM you later.

key Symbol Should be key

Hello,
Can you make a fix for ptg 0816?
Thank's
I am on an English OS with a German hardware keyboard (QWERTZ).
The thing is, that all cabs (or reg tweaks) circulating around don't work anymore. Since build 19xxx all those reg changes don't have an impact anymore! No way to change the hardware keyboard!
any update on that??

I'm still using my keyboard fix on all the latest version and never had a problem,
right now I'm using it on the OpenTouch 7.7
Since it is working fine for me I can't see how i can solve that problem,
did you followed all the steps as mentioned in the first post and restarted immediately?
BTW from your SIG line I read that you are using a Wizard not a Herald, I guess that's the problem ;)
