Does anyone know of a software package I can load with individual maps for different countries in Europe. I want something that is phone based as I don't know if I will have network access.

You can purchase European maps for TomTom.

I'm going to be spending 10+ days in Italy at the end of this summer so I'm planning on using my Tilt and TomTom to help guide me around the old country. I haven't yet SIM unlocked my Tilt, but I'm going to and then get a pre-paid SIM once I get there. I'll just toss like 20 euros on the SIM and pay by the kb for data (which is really cheap from what I can tell).
I was in Italy last summer and used tomtom on my then 8525. TomTom was amazing. Wife and I drove through wine country in chianti and punched in addresses of vineyards and never got lost.
Finding the right address was the challenge. Once you have the right address, TomTom had every road imaginable, even small dirt roads.
