if by unlocked you mean a sim-unlock, contact your service provider ~90 days after you purchased your phone and ask for the unlock code.

if by unlocke you mean a CID-unlock, go to the WM6 forum and hard-spl your phone. Make sure you follow the directions.

In the future, please search before you post.

I meant sim-unlocked. I was just wondering, 90 days is much to wait ...

Do you know how to sim-unlock it?

Sure! You have 2 choices. Either pay for an unlock code on line or be a T-Mobile customer for 90 days in good standing and get it free.

I'm in the US Navy. I explained to the service rep that I was going overseas and wanted my unlock code. I got it no problem. This was 3 days after I bough my phone.

Really? How long have you been with TMobile? I unlocked my phone after 90 days with tmobile (the wing was my first tmobile phone). It might be different for those that upgraded though, especially if they 've been with tmobile since they were voicestream (like my mom).

I would like to +1 to the going overseas. I went to guam for a month and wanted to use my phone there. They sent me the unlock code in about 2 days I think. Once there I used a local GSM provider on a pay as you go. was like $70 for a pre-paid with 1200 minutes that called the US for 1 to 1 minutes. It wasn't too bad.

I guess, I will have to wait. The thing is, I am T-Mobile customer since 02, but I got the phone from my cousin who signed a new contract with T-Mobile less than 2 weeks ago, just to give me the Wing, since he has N95.

I just thought there might be a way to sim unlock it without payin for unlock codes on ebay,...

Quick question, and sorry of this seems dumb.

Why do I need to "unlock" the phone and what does it achieve? I have had the Wing for any about 2 months but I will be leaving in a few to go out of the country and need it working. I have had standard phones in the past and they always worked outside the US.

One more, I live in Colorado and went up to do some snowboarding over the weekend and had no service...I always have service there, does this unlocking thing have something to do with that?

I have flashed to a new ROM recently that I found here so it is not stock.

Unlocking has nothing to do with your problem. I live on a hill, almost eye-level with a Sprint cell phone tower, and I get 2 bars most times in my living room.

In that case I am a bit concerned about not having service at Copper Mountain.

I wish I could remember but I went up a few weeks back and I think...I am not sure, I had flashed this new ROM just before that, and I had service so I belive this new ROM worked up there before. Now, Saturday it did not, not even weak signal, just "searching..." I though also it might have something to do with a cab I downloaded last week to fix my problem with not receiving MMS. My MMS works now and here in town, I get fine service but why would it not work at this resort? I have always has great service up there, even on the top of the mountain. My friend has Cingular and his phone had great signal.

Unlocking enables you to use any other SIM card on your phone. it has nothing to do with the reception. Your issue would be the new ROM you flashed, try a different Radio and that should help.

Actually, I should have been more specific. I know what unlocking does (both types), I am just not sure if I need to do it or not. Do I NEED to do it if I am leaving for Europe for my phone to work? My previous phones I have had worked with no problem in every country I have been to. But I am not sure about a PPC.

What would cause my phone to only work in a specific area? When I got back to town, I had fine reception. Just not at the resort and it had previously worked fine. Could it be a setting that got changed when I added that cab to update setting for MMS or is that just data connection settings? The cab was listed here on post # 205.

I have the same ROM (Touch IT 4.4) and have had issues with the MMS so have used exactly the same CAB you pointed out-

I did notice that the reception is worse with the 4.4 so i dont think its any issue with the CAB. Like i recommenced, try a new Radio, some could boost your reception. ( but yea, places where i had 4 bars now only has 2 or less, so i would say its the Radio issue rather than the MMS Cabs you installed)

the purpose of unlocking for EUROPE is so that u dont have to pay a ridiculous phone bill for roaming in europe....especial if u use your GPRS...if u unlock u can get one of those prepaid t-mobile chips or any carrier in EUROPE...load the credit..and talk...that way u r in charge of your minutes...thats what i did in the UK

In the United States, cell phone towers gradually broadcast downwards. It's an FCC violation to broadcast upwards because they're afraid of RF signals interfering with air traffic (that is, the RF signals that go from planes from air traffic controllers).

I just thought there might be a way to sim unlock it without payin for unlock codes on ebay,...

On the unlocking thru T-Mo via code- to clarify...

1: (1) unlock request per line, per 90 days

This means that if you are a NEW customer you have to wait 90 days- Unless you are military. The only other time you can get a unlock code right away on a "new" account (account being opened less than 90-days) is buying the phone from T-Mo at FULL RETAIL.

If you are a EXISTING customer and your account is in GOOD standing- has had I think no late payments within the past 90-days you can request a unlock code same day you buy /acquire another phone.

PS: Unless doing a WM phone is different...

When doing the sim unlock via code- you will need a foreign sim and a FULLY CHARGED battery. Upon power up with a foreign sim a prompt apears asking you for the code.. Follow the instructions you will get from the unlock dept for the details...

(Foreign non-t-mo sim is needed.. -unless you have the keypad sequence press so you don't have to have a foreign sim)

PS: If doing a unlock via Febay-unlocking service, etc... it is a GOOD idea you obtain the code entered via the KEYPAD, instead of other means- unless that method is proven to work the 2nd go around....as that code may come in handy if you flash with a locked rom?
(On non-Wm phones if you have a unlocked phone you can re-lock it if the flash file is "locked". With the code if you re-lock a phone you just enter the code again- and you're unlocked again...)

Yep.. you are correct..

For those that don't know:

Unlocking does not magically add any hidden options to the phone, allow you to control satellites in orbit, etc... It just allows the use of a competitors sim in the phone.

If the phone is SIM locked you can only use a sim from the provider your service it thru. Unlocking it allows you to use the sim card from another provider.

When I called T-Mo one time on a unlock the girl was trying to talk me into using T-Mo internationally... I told her NO-WAY due to the RATES...

Another reason to use a European Pre-Paid card is for whoever is calling you (if you're in Europe on business) is it's a local call for them.... Another reason for using a pre-paid card besides being able to just throw it away when it's used up is that you will never have to argue over disputed charges.

(Imagine trying to dispute charges on calls made overseas... it would be a nightmare.)

Unlock the phone- get a pre-paid card, use it up and throw it away...

NOTE for those using your phone in another market- Not all features of your phone may "work"..

Thanks, that's very useful info.

Thanks for saying "Thanks", it is appreciated.:)

Questions on unlocking come up all the time- people new to cell phones thinking sim Unlocking will add extra options to there phones, wanting to know what "unlocking" is.

Most of the time when someone has a unlocking question- 'What is this unlocking all you guys are talking about, do I need to unlock my phone ?" it is related to the SIM LOCK that providers put on their phone so it is "married" to only their network.

That said and since I'm new to this WM stuff but have been around doing cell mods since 2004 and I may be "off" in my terminology , providers may "app" lock the phone to try to keep you from running apps not approved by "them"..
(Read that as third party apps in competition with their installed apps).

Their installed apps generating $$ for them EACH time you use the feature- The alternate app you are wanting to run each time you run it not costing you ANY money. Additionally they may hide settings you want or need to change to make the phone perform as YOU want. Some people may refer to that when they are wanting their phone "unlocked".

The main purpose of unlocking being VERY useful when traveling.... No offense to other countries but I'd rather get a pre-paid card from whatever country I'm going to- that have to FIGHT over billing charges on phone calls made overseas with people that speak other languages... I for example speaking English and not Chinese (or whatever)... On the filp side of that imagine for a moment you speak XYZ language and very broken English and you're trying to get billing charges adjusted.... Besides the language barrier- the actual language itself due to the fact others grow up /are taught differently they have viewpoints- thought processes that ARE different from region to region.

(As a EXAMPLE of different thought processes- Take MEN and WOMEN- both from the SAME species BUT they are worlds apart in how they process info- view things.):D

The above being said the cell companies WANT you to use their native international services as they make $$$$ on it.... and they really don't like your phone to be used on competitors networks, hence they sometimes may give you the "run-around" if you inquire on getting your SIM LOCK removed.

90 days comes from TMobile's policy of only unlocking 1 phone per number per 90 days. I had them unlock 2 phones at once, but I have a family plan. I had to wait 90 days for them to unlock another phone. Hope this info clears things up for a few people.
