Its 18 months or so since I joined this forum, and it was because of my new MDA Vario II.
I'm now due for an upgrade, and there is only one phone I want - the III.
So, tell me - what should I do? I'm so confused and disapointed. I use my Vario II to stream YouTube video and surf the web, and from what I've seen, the III isn't up to it.
Please tell me I'm wrong and I should call for my upgrade tomorrow !!!!

Seriously, do you want to buy mine off me / swap? T-mobile branded, but you can flash / do what you like with it.
I really can't use it as an everyday phone. On another forum (hexus.net) the guy said simply - it's not a phone as such. It's a tool for techs / devs or whatever who need the extra functions. But for a phone it lacks in many usability ways that your average nokia / SE / samsung does not. It's a shame really, the device has so much potential to be awesome, it's completely the software side of things that lets it down.
It has dropped a fair few useful features from WM5 / earlier versions too - like having a t9 text input rather than a touchscreen keyboard. Now you *have* to get the stylus out if you want to send a quick message without altering from portrait to landscape to use the hard keyboard, which takes around 2 - 3 seconds anyway for the hardware to redraw it.

Looks like HTC are working on the vids driver issue. Someone has suggested a patch in feb/march. Have a read of some of the posts on it.
take the plunge. get one. :D

Yea I read that. But also read a post saying that there is no driver due for release since there is no ATI Imageon hardware built in to have drivers for. Who knows? There comes a point where you need to say you've had a product that hasn't delivered what you expected for long enough. However, it is full of features so maybe a good choice. But if I was buying right now with the knowledge I have now I'd probably not get a smart phone but something nice and simple that could perfectly perform the duties I wanted it to :)
So short answer: it's up to you :p

Thanks for that feedback guys. I'm pretty use to my MDA and its functionality, even though making a call can be sometimes difficult.
So, is video playback as bad as is mentioned?
Also, I use voice dialing and the hands-free speaker. Are these functions on the III?
cheers guys,

I watch youtube on mine all the time. I think it is just fine. I have been using the Kaiser now for 5 months and I love it and would not make another choice.

Yes those feature are in it out of the box. U should get one. All in all, it is the best pda out yet. I personally love mine, and with the right rom u can make it fly. It doesnt have problems with any 320X240 video, and with the new coreplayer 1.1.3 not even with bigger ones so get it. It's a great pda phone!

Thanks guys -- still a great place to be for advice!
Speaking of the right ROM, which is the right ROM.
I never flashed my Vario II, but have been reading a bit about it.
Can anyone point me to the right thread for a first timer?

The Vario II is the HTC Hermes. Have a look here at the upgrading forum. There are some stickies on HardSPL, which you must follow before upgrading the ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=306
