[UPDATED 20080411] - Contact Utilities

Hi All,
I've developed a small app to aid-me on organizing some settings on pocket outlook.
So i have putted it all together and came up with this tool.
1. -Set contact's display name for the contact's view - several formats
2. -Add Birthdays and Anniversaries to calendar;
3. -Set Contacts Picture
4. -Set ringtone based on category.

How it works.
-Install App;
-Go to Settings, provide each one of the necessary values;
-Save <Very important>;
-Go to Menu ->Contacts and select the feature you want;

Has I don't have that much time available, this tool will be updated in an "has i can" schedule.
Please leave any comments, bugs/suggestions, etc.
One bug i have is about setting the displayname (or fileas), some times you have to make a 2nd or 3rd pass in order to apply to all contacts.

-"i installed and have error for contact pictures location. I try to change the location, but it shows error n need to quit the program."
-> I've had this problem also, it seem to be related to IE cache Folders, added exception handling to the folder dialog in order to allow the program to continue.
-Added default pictures for contacts (male/female), its calculated with the last letter from firstname (or lastname if fisrts is empy) (if it ends in "a" it will be marked as female picture[Marilyn Monroe else... Elvis (it works in 90% here in portugal :D) NOTE: U have to manually put these pictures into contacts folder.

UPDATE 18.03.2008 - V1.2
-some modifications on the birthdays and anniversary's date time tasks (will start at 10AM till 23:30PM).
-some visual and log modifications.
-wait cursor on settings load ( it takes some time).
-minor corrections

the boy and girl picture thing, replaced all the existing contact pictures I had... thank god I backed them up first!
and by the way, my friend installed this program on his phone with a chinese rom, and it went pretty well! just to inform you.

Great program, but here is a bug.
On <setup>, under <Ringtones> with <Categories> window pull down. Repeated Busines, Business, Personal, Personl, Business, Business, Friends, Business, Business.....and on and on.
Can you fix this?

oh, no... I used Sprite Backup, sorry...
and no, unfortunately the picture fill function did replace all my contact pics including the already existed ones...

hummm, strange behavior..
can u validate your settings please: u will find a xmlfile in the program dir, open that file and check the values of picture location and picture format.
also check that , for instance, u have a contact and a picture format of firstname_lastname then...
FirsName="John"
MiddleName="ANY"
LastName="Marcus"
there should exist, under picture location, a file named john_marcus.xxx (xxx=jpg,png or gif). I recommend this filename format has in many cases the other fields aren't filled (company, tittle...) mabe the format u choosed is making the prog to look for a filename that is being malformed by the prog (somethng like "_Carlos_Lopes.gif") so please post your format options.
If finding the picture fails, the prog calculates if name is male/female (i'll put an option for this in the future) and applies the defaultF or M picture to the contact.
So, something is failing, i had a prob with the settings xml file that was not beeing updated, so please check your settings.
u can "fix" this picture replacement by deleting the defaultm and defaultf.gif files :D

hey great app... but had to run it two or three times before it converts all my contacts into firstname-lastname format.. each time it converts just few of the contacts.. havent tried anyother functionalities..
i am using htc gene.

Export via bluetooth to where? (no, it's not possible)
U can still try to send the backup file to any other computer , it's a XML file so i think it can be oppened via MS Excel...have not tried it yet..

Yes, read the posts, i already stated that before, I don't know why that happens the code is the same. just push the button 3 or 4 times and the thing will go :D.

Awesome app Trlopes!

I was wondering if you could integrate a feature to display the nicknames instead of the selected format on SMS, MMS, and calls (well just about everywhere except the contacts list; I would like to have the nickname in the contacts list but with their full names as well [ex. FirstName MiddleName "NickName" LastName)

As it stands right now, the nickname feature is useless. It only appears when the contact's information is detailed.

would it be possible to add a feature to set the display name to the companyname in the event that there is no first or last name

ie if the display name format would result in blank or just "," and a company name exists then set it to the company name

also when adding pictures to contact, could we have an option to first look for the personal picture but if this fails use a picture companyname.jpg if it exists

Great Apl. but i miss two features:

When i copy Birthdays from Contacts into the calender the ContactUtilitiesInstaller_v1.2.1 creates an event from 10 am to 11 am.
Is it possible to get an "Full day event" instead of just a 1 hour notification.
Maybe you can implement this additional choice?

Also:It would be great if i can select wheater i want an notification for the implemented "1 hour" birthday event or not.....

Great app.
However it seems that the age is not calcualted exept for the first year. E.g. a person borned in 1970 is 39 years old in both 2009, 2010 etc.

Adding birthday to a calendar is what my old old siemens did by default, after adding birth date to contact.
I didn't know that it's such a problem for s60 or wm.
Same thing with adding ring for group in wm. I think it's essential.

And it's the first wm program that does it :)

Some ideas to make it even better ;)

Choosing (and maybe changing it after)
- text in birthday alarm
- sound for alarm
- time / all day (as mentioned before)
- time of reminder (as mentioned before)
- status free / busy

I can't find an easy way to add persons age to alarm, so adding year of birth in birthday alarm text would probably be the best option.

Also:
- removing all added alarms
- removing alarms for people removed from contact list
- blacklist/whitelist for people we don't/do want to add alarms for

And if possible:
- auto add birthday to calendar after adding birth date to contact
- auto add ring after adding contact to a category

Possible bugs found:
- can't save "Process Notfound" as unchecked
- cant' save "Also process Anniversary's" as unchecked
- there is about 5 seconds lag, after clicking "Select" for backup location
