This is very nice ROM. Speedy and balanced - minimal bloat and neccessary apps.

This rom is absolutely fantastic, [fastest] rom I have flashed yet and I have tried them all.

Blackwood is a fast, lean rom based on the new AT&T official 1.62 ROM. Blackwood includes many new updated drivers, a faster (actually usable) camera, better video performance, quicker messaging and file explorer apps, and many more improvements that make it the quickest ROM I've ever used. You'll never be happier with your Tilt!

This ROM features a whole new and original look and feel.

This ROM is recommended for AT&T Tilt owners, but should work for everyone. For the best performance, it is recommended that you use radio version 1.27.14.09 (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Kaiser/Radio/KAIS_Radio_Only_1.27.14.09_CustomRUU.rar) with this ROM.

Main Features:

Exclusive Designer Home Clock
Original Utility Home Icons
Subtle Battery Meter (see screenshots)
Outstanding Performance

Inside you'll find:

Original HTC Home
Daily Agenda
HTC Task Manager
BTcrawler
AT&T Proxy Manager
Streaming Apps
FieldTest
Intent Java
RDC
QuickGPS
WiFiFoFum
A handful of games
HTC Album
HTC Audio Manager
TCPMP
Advanced Config
(Fast) Voice Command mapped to PTT
Real Player
Pocketscreen
PIMBackup

and more...

Screenshots:

New in Version 1.0 (with battery meter while charging):
http://gthing.net/STUFFS/ppc/blackwood/blackwoodv1.png
Left softkey mapped to "New SMS", Skinned Dialer, Audio Manager.

The subtle battery meter is a customized version of Batti. It blends in with the theme so it doesn't look ugly and stand out, but it's easy to see when you look for it.

!!! IF YOU HAVE NO SOUND !!!

Installation: Install as normal. On first boot, wait for all automatic stuff to install BEFORE clicking on the box that says "click to install..." After the first auto installer has run, click "ok" on the box to run the second one. The second installer will reset your phone, at which point it should automatically configure to your carrier and reset again. Restore your PIM data, install optional applications, and soft reset once more for good measure.

Looks interesting...I will give it a whirl in a couple of hours. Will let you know what I find out. What kind of feeback are you looking for in this ROM....pretty much everything I assume at this point?

Edit: Does this ROM already come with a radio or do I need to flash the radio seperately.

btw download was nice and fast :D

The final version of this ROM will have a handful of tweaks and goodies, as well as a more unified theme. Right now I'd mostly just like feedback on the stability and speed of the ROM.

I've found the responsiveness to be outstanding - especially in the File Explorer (including start menu), camera, and messaging apps. In fact, this is the first ROM where I have been able to use the camera with any sort of confidence.

I am sorry to say that you downloaded a version with a serious bug that will cause the ROM to crash ... a lot. Please download from the link again and delete the old file!

You will need to download and install the radio separately using the link in the 1st post.

Is the one on your server the correct one to download now? Or should I wait till you upload a fixed version?

Since this is an AT&T based ROM, should I expect Cingular Video to work right out the box or do you think tweaking will be needed.

I, too...will flash later on today.
Just inquiring.....:D

I've never used CV before, I'll have to look into it. I doubt it will be working out of the box with this rom. Other video sites seem to work well though.

edit: I have added realplayer into the new build. The AT&T proxy manager applications are in there too. Is that all that is needed?

New Version Posted!

Have a look! (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1944231#post1944231)

I still have some minor things I need to sort out, but I'm at about 90% on this ROM.

A lot of time went into making the new theme. This includes a WM6 theme made from scratch, new wallpaper, boot screen, home clock, and home icons. At some point I will also be skinning the dialer and improving the theme in other areas. I hope you find this ROM as good looking as I hope I made it!

I can't track down the bug with the File Explorer icon. I replaced the icon in the file with a new one, but it appears that it is still showing a scrambled version of the old icon. I don't know where this is coming from yet, but I should have it fixed it short order.

Hope you enjoy it, please leave feedback!

Yea that little bug took me by surprise today. It's SO annoying! Not only does it make typing text impossibly tedious, but it slows down the overall ROM as well. LAME! I should have tested more before release...

Fortunately I've fixed it in my current build and will be making a release probably tonight (read: early morning like 2am) if I can manage to squash a few more bugs.

NEW VERSION (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370442)

Okay, I should probably give some time between releases to let people play with each version of the ROM, but I there were some bugs that were too annoying in RC1 to leave around for long (like the keyboard thing).

RC2 is a marked improvement and includes about 90% of the changes I wanted made. This could be considered a milestone release and as long as there is nothing major that turns up immediately, I won't be releasing another version for several days.

I am most excited about the new subtle battery. It works like batti or vistahide battery meters, except it is themed to be just barely noticeable. At 100% battery power, you can't even see it at all. As the battery drains, you can see the meter only if you're looking for it. It's FAR LESS annoying than the rainbow battery meter that has been so popular lately. Let me know what you think!

There is a bug that I believe has to do with Net CF 3.5 that is causing Windows Live Mobile not to work. This is one of my favorite programs, so I will be tackling the bug soon.

Let me know what you think - I'd especially love to hear feedback on the overall theme and new battery meter!

If it's an AT&T Tilt you should be just fine. But before installing the ROM, be sure you have installed HARD-SPL!!! I cannot stress this enough!

so I tried it and I really actually like how zippy my phone is. The only problem is that I have no sound. At first I used the polaris radio 1.58, and then I switched to the 1.64 radio and I still have no souind. Does only a certain radio work with this ROM?

Looks great! Thanks for cooking this up.
A few questions -
I'm a sucker for benchmarks - have you run SBP, VS, etc.?
What have you cooked in that requires NetCF3.5 if anything?
Could you elaborate a bit on your reg/speed tweaks when you get a chance?
Cheers,

DoctaJay - looks like you need to use 1.27.14.09 (Tilt) radio.

gthing
22-02-2008, 11:24 PM
doctajay - that's right, you need to use the radio in the first post. Don't worry though, it's a great radio!

gasman - The only program I really care about is Windows Live Search mobile, which will actually run with NetCF 2.0. But whichever one I cook in, wls doesn't work anyway - so I've got some other problem somewhere.

I have no preference so once I fix the bug I will cook in any version that it sounds like people want.

As for the speed tweaks .. hmm, there are lots - and more to come. Button-press sounds are removed first of all because those tend to slow thing down. Windows animations, menu animations, etc. are all disabled. I have the filesystem cache increased and the glyphcache increased. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Try installing the cab from the BUGS section in the second post of this thread. Should fix it right up.

This looks really cool, but can anyone tell me if they can stream XM via xmstream or musicdock? This is pretty important for me..the last 1.62 ROM I tried couldn't do it but the 1.61 by the same chef could.

Since this is a .62 based ROM it would really be appreciated if someone with an XM online account could test that. Thanks.

I am giving this ROM a twirl on one of my Tilts.... So far so good. I replaced the Home plug-In as I am not a BlackWood fan. This ROM is also customizable. I able to install Opera and In4mobility, iGO 2006, 1-Calc and SBP without glitches or hangs. It is as fast if not faster than any WM6.1 cooked Rom out there including Dutty's.

Great work gthing.... I like ... I like...

BTW I added Nadavi Phone Dialer, and it looks and functions great..

I am streaming XM on the 3 day free trial. Works great. I assume if the free trial works, a subbed XM would work as well.

If you're not getting sound you need to update your radio. I linked to one in the first post that will work.

I did not include mobile office in this ROM. I always liked having it, but never actually used it. If there is demand I will throw it back in.

Hey Joe - you can install the radio whenever you want, it *shouldn't* mess with your current ROM. But it's always a good idea to back up, because you never know.

As for MS Office, once you have the cab you simply need to put it on your phone somewhere and access it using file explorer. This is how you install programs on your phone.

NEW VERSION!!! (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1942657)

BLACKWOOD 1.0 IS HERE!

RELEASE NOTES:

Here we are with the final stable release of the blackwood ROM. This does not mean I'm stopping development, just that this will be a major milestone release!

I squashed some big bugs with this one - the netCF issue that was keeping advanced config and windows live search mobile is taken care of (phew!) and the dialer is fixed. I stuck with the default AT&T dialer because it is the fastest. I will develop the skin further in a future point release.

I've further optimized the speed of this ROM by increasing the scrolling speed, disabling touchflo sounds, and a bunch of other stuff. You should find it to be the fastest ROM yet.

I've also introduced a new audio manager skin to bring it line with the home screen and dialer.

The left softkey has been mapped to "New SMS" which I think most people find to be very convenient.

I hope you like it, please leave feedback!

I'm going to give this one a try. Is it still recommended to use radio 1.27.14.09? I'll flash this one unless someone advises a beter one.

Tried the rom with my original radio (1.64.08.21) and had no sound - flashed 1.27.14.09 and sound ok again. Now to set it all up and play with the Rom. Looks good so far.

Cheers.

Yea, I would still recommend 1.27.14.09. I think it's the best radio available - at least for AT&T so YMMV.

No, it's not just you. This is based off the latest AT&T Official ROM, so you need the latest official AT&T Radio. There is a link to it in the first post of this thread.

It is NOT included in the ROM, but because so many people have been having problems, maybe it should be.

Note: you can flash the new radio without deleting all your data, but you should back up just to be safe.

This rom is perfect for me - at least until the next one comes along :D

It's a bit slow when first installing apps (writing to registry etc I suppose), but after everything installed it zips along.

I used gpsTest to set up my gps and it found the com port/baud rate AND latched onto sattellites with good DOP figures in less than 1 minute - on first run.

GPS with TomTom latches on in less than 30 seconds every time.

Volume for my handsfree car kit (wired one with only small mono speaker) is louder than other roms.

Oh yes - I'm in UK and using O2 UK contract sim - so it doesn't need to be an ATT Tilt.

I'll keep this for a while.

great ROM, i've been using 1.0 since yesterday. Once wierd thing for me is that in the active sync settings (menu - options - settings button). After i chance my settings if I click the 'ok' button in the upper right corner my settings aren't saved. But if I use the physical ok button on the phone then it works ok.

there have been a few other wired UI issues like this for me also... can't think of them right now ...

But in general I really like this ROM so far, thanks a ton =).

Oh and if anyone cares max height for today agenda is 109 pixels, if it is the only plugin you use besides HTC home (I like to set it to fixed height so that I only have the today agenda scroller and never the windows mobile scroll bar).

Thanks for trying out the ROM and for the feedback! It's the only way I can make it even better!

Yea, it definitely slows down in a few places: after booting up, after installing *some* apps, and after restoring PIM data. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the stock AT&T ROM, but it may have something to do with the increased cache sizes I have done.

What radio are you using?

Yea I am aware of the X-button issue. I think it is something a bit wonky with the HTC task manager I used. I will update to a newer version for my next release. Until then, you just kinda have to know when to hit "X" and when to use the softkey. :D You could also change the task manager settings for "tap and hold to close programs" which would solve the problem.

edit: Try installing the cab from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1518386&postcount=4 and let me know if that fixes it.

I haven't noticed any other UI glitches, so if you come across them again, please let me know. I've done more UI stuff to this ROM than I've seen other cooks do, so it's entirely possible that I've missed something along the way.

Also, I need to update the today agenda program. It is also a bit wonky of an install. It works fine, but sometimes trying to access the settings portion of the program will freeze your phone.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the ROM!

Use Advanced Configuration included in the ROM (tools folder) to show SIM Contacts.

The comm manager (is that what you're talking about?) is in the comm folder. Perhaps I could map it to one of the softkeys?

Install the radio that is linked to in the first post. You install it the same way you installed the rom. In fact, it will look like you are installing a new rom but you're really just upgrading the radio. This *should be* non-destructive, but back up anything important just to be safe.

Hi, I usually don't bother people in the forum but I downloaded this rom and I like it. It's fast! The only thing I'm having trouble with is when I tap on the contacts button the contacts screen comes up with no names, but if a call comes in it will tell me the contacts name so it's reading them from the sim card. This is a first for me - I've kept a rom for a whole 2 days and will probably keep longer - it's great.

At the moment I only have one problem - and I admit I haven't searched too far yet...

... This is an ATT rom and I'm using it with an HTC device with UK keyboard layout. I've tried Alex's keyboard fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1928334&postcount=500)but it doesn't re-map the keys for me.

Any help will be appreciated before I begin searching in more detail.

Cheers.

I am looking for the dialer that you show in your screen shots. Can you tell me the name of it and if there is a downloadable cab file for it?

Thanks.

For keyboard issues, try this:

Although, that cab really should have worked...

That dialer is the stock AT&T dialer changed to have grey buttons and the blackwood background. It is integrated into the rom so, sorry, no cab.

hi thanks that actually worked :) many thanks for the reply!

anyway i have one more question:

i have the radio that you suggested in your 1st post, i have sound, i can hear calls etc all as normal!

BUT

after a while, say after 3 or 4 text messages, all text message tones go silent, no vibrate, no nothing. Now the tones ARE set correctly in the settings and the mp3's are on the Main Memory.

so it plays tone for 3 texts, then gives up after that (or there abouts)

any suggestions? a soft reset fixes it, but i receive a lot of texts so that means a lot of resets ....

considering a hard reset in a few days ..

ps, BLOODY FAST ROM!!
kudos man, kudos!

Hi, I've tried to use the Wireless Modem yesterday and noticed that the page is srewed up and can't use it. I hard reset and it's still there. After the hard reset also noticed the Beam button appeared in the Comm Manager but then it dissapeared, not like I use it since the Tilt I think doesn't have it. Here is a picture of the page.

Strange .. I can think of a few things that *might* be causing that problem. I'll look into it on my next release. That application is found in the windows directory, ya?

Beam also applies to bluetooth, not just IR.

As for using you phone as a modem, it seems that bluetooth PAN, DUN, or using wmwifirouter are all better choices. Have you tried any of those?

No I haven't used any of those. I'll check them out. This is something I would hardly ever use, but you never know when you might wanna use it to help or impress someone.:D
Other than this I haven't had any problem with this ROM. I'm using A_C's S2U2 with it and runs with no problems. I like this ROM.

Tried out Dutty's ROM last week and it was fast here and there, but the GUI would become unresponsive sometimes. It ended up crashing on a regular basis and finally so bad I had to reload from the bootloader screen.

So far this ROM looks a lot faster... at least in the GUI responsiveness. I will load it up with all of my normal apps and report back if I have any troubles.

I imagine I will find it somewhere on this forum, but I need the CAB for MobileOffice to install that.

I've noticed that in this rom when you text message there is no option for emoticons. Is this because it is an AT&T rom? I know I had that option on the last rom I had that was an HTC.

No luck with the Office CAB. The links are all broken.

My biggest trouble with the ROM is that some of my software won't connect to the internet. Activesync and Opera seem to work fine, but when I try to connect with Flexmail they only thing I can do is set it for manual and let Activesync/Opera connect first before downloading mail. It seems that no matter how I set the My ISP / GPRS settings it won't connect. I've even tried erasing them and typing it in myself (using password CINGULAR1 as found on this forum.) I can get NewsBreak to download the RSS text, but when I go to download a podcast it fails. It's just weird because I usually don't have any trouble with these applications. Any ideas?

The speed is just awesome. I love how fast it scrolls.

There should be an office cab around here somewhere ...

I did some searching on the connectivity issue. I've noticed it in other roms before. Start here:

Hi, having some problems connecting to GPRS on the internet, it says its connected but no pages are bought up, had some issues with it connecting to Orange WAP rather than Orange Internet, so hard resetted, now with a blank rom it still doesnt work .. any ideas? i have the suggested radio and the settings are right it does dial/conect to Orange Internet ... hummm!!

EDIT:

ok so it wants to PERMANENTLY connect to "Orange WAP" ... even after i've deleted the settings inthe config! ARGH!! is there any registry files that will FORCE it to be "Orange Internet" ????? this is pissing me off juuuust a little now

well I sometimes have issues with connectivity .. it is hard to explain .. sometimes white pages in pocket IE, sometimes other apps won't connect to the internet. Other than this I love this ROM. I think I'm going to try Duttys 6.1 for a bit ... is there a new version of this coming?

Thanks again for a great ROM, I might be back to using it in a day or so.

I've never had connectivity problems with this rom. Could it be the area where you are? I think for the apps that won't connect to the internet you can always have your data connection on. Cause I use some apps that where made for like Windows Mobile 2003, some old stuff, and they use to work perfect, but in WM6 they don't open the data connection by themselves.

I ended up flashing a different ROM, and the connection problem didn't go away. It turns out that AT&T had disabled my isp.cingular connection because I didn't have the PDA data plan. (I had the Blackberry plan instead because the company didn't switch me months ago when I swapped the phone.) The funny thing is that it was working for the first few months. Anyway, I have switched my plan now and (using a different ROM) it seems to be working. I need to test it further, because they had me change a lot of settings under connections to get it to connect.

Anyway... I just wanted to post here so that you would know it probably had nothing to do with your cooked ROM. Thanks!

It was an improvement that AT&T made in their latest official release. I would recommend using a ROM built off of the same base rom.

Blackwood is a fast, lean rom based on the new AT&T official 1.62 ROM. Blackwood includes many new updated drivers, a faster (actually usable) camera, better video performance, quicker messaging and file explorer apps, and many more improvements that make it the quickest ROM I've ever used. You'll never be happier with your Tilt!

This ROM features a whole new and original look and feel.

This ROM is recommended for AT&T Tilt owners, but should work for everyone. For the best performance, it is recommended that you use radio version 1.27.14.09 (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Kaiser/Radio/KAIS_Radio_Only_1.27.14.09_CustomRUU.rar) with this ROM.

Main Features:

Exclusive Designer Home Clock
Original Utility Home Icons
Subtle Battery Meter (see screenshots)
Outstanding Performance

Inside you'll find:

Original HTC Home
Daily Agenda
HTC Task Manager
BTcrawler
AT&T Proxy Manager
Streaming Apps
FieldTest
Intent Java
RDC
QuickGPS
WiFiFoFum
A handful of games
HTC Album
HTC Audio Manager
TCPMP
Advanced Config
(Fast) Voice Command mapped to PTT
Real Player
Pocketscreen
PIMBackup

and more...

Screenshots:

New in Version 1.0 (with battery meter while charging):
http://gthing.net/STUFFS/ppc/blackwood/blackwoodv1.png
Left softkey mapped to "New SMS", Skinned Dialer, Audio Manager.

The subtle battery meter is a customized version of Batti. It blends in with the theme so it doesn't look ugly and stand out, but it's easy to see when you look for it.

Ill have to give this a try. Ive been a steady Dutty fan but hey. FYI im a Provo boy myself.
