I just downloaded file, how do I use it?
I found my answer from another thread:
-----------------------
a PRL is a list of roaming information and for evdo users it lists all the evdo towers also.
to manually update your prl, type ##prl# on the phones keypad, enter MSL, browse to the msl file.
----------------------
just did the update and testing now :)

enter ##PRL# (##775#)
it will ask for your MSL enter it (search for msl generator) if you dont know it
and hit ok
tap Update Prl and then goto menu edit, load up the file it will ask you to reboot and your good to go...

hmmm, seems my previous PRL was blank??
With the upgrade, I dont see much of a difference but I dont know if I have REV A speeds.
At the bottom it shows 3 KB and now shows 134 KB but is kind of frozen on nba.com.
nfl.com opens pretty fast but I went back to nba.com and same issue. Stuck with 141kb showing at the bottom now...grrr

before updating the PRL i was getting around 134kb/s with dslreports.com/mspeed
now i get about 670kb/s

Using www.mobilespeedtest.com (http://www.mobilespeedtest.com) before I got 676 now I only get about 600.
Not much of a change for my area I'd say...

I updated yo Prl 60711 today on mogul. My speeds at office have always been about 22-32 kbs. Office is in bad area. Now after update pages seemed to flash . Did speed test at dslreports where I always go. Nows I am getting 123 kbs WOW!
Update. Went to freespeedtest and shows 151 kbs and before was about 24 kbs, of couse i always clear cache before each test. This rpl is great, I have called Sprint to complain about data speeds.

I don't see much difference between this (60711) and the 60611 I loaded up after updating to the 3.16 ROM. I'm getting roughly 770kbps down and about 77kbps up.

wow guys, i almost choked when I seen my numbers. Never tested before this update but I went on website, it says "your current bandwidth reading is: 932.10 kbps" which means you can download at 116.51 kb/sec from our servers.
I hit retest at the bottom of the page and i keep getting 0 kbps as numbers.
I went back to the website and clicked on the original link and got 599 kbps.
Hit retest and same 0 kbps BS.
Went back to website one last time and now i'm getting the same 932.10 kbps. I'm not sure where I was originally but this sounds fast as heezy :).
I'm actually in love wit sprint, never thought I would say that lol.

Ya know... I was gonna call bull on this - because PRL files are used as a roaming list which is not directly related to your data speed... However, it appears that it may have "properly" associated the Mogul with the REV.A towers. I mean, see for yourselves...

No change in speed. PRL's only effect roaming and if you can use other peoples towers or not. The only thing that would fix the speed would be a new radio. And yes I did try this PRL. If anything it is a bit slower.

Can you run speedtest.net though pie or opera mini? opera mini uses a proxied server, so those results would not be accurate right?:D

This is not true. While it's true RevA can speed up your download speeds, you could VERY well be averaging those speeds and be using RevA. RevA is seen a LOT more noticeably in upload speeds, where Rev0 uploads max was around 160k, with RevA upload speeds can max out above 1mbps. I am using RevA and I average roughly 800-1200k down and 600k up.

I really have not seen any increase of speeds. I always get between 700kbps to 950kbps. I did notice that on my way home on a phone call I would always drop my connection at the same place. This time with the new PRL I didn't drop my call. So that was a nice bonus.

Although I've only been testing today, i've consistently been getting 850 - 970k download speeds.
There seems to be this dead spot where my call always drops to/from the office, and today it didn't drop!

LOL.. do many of you really know what a PRL does? It's not a list of towers. It's a list of SID's...tells your phone which ones are Sprint's and which ones you can and can't roam on. If they add a tower in your area you don't need a new PRL to access it.
Placebo effect....
cohowap
20-02-2008, 05:18 PM
Actually, your only half right.
PRL also tells your phone bands to scan, as well as tags that depict the network types (RTT/EVDO/EVDO rev. A). Therefore, technically it is possible for a PRL update to make connections better, thus making speeds greater.
Essentially a PRL is a driver for your phone on a CDMA network, drivers can be updated to make better use of the hardware.
Not a placebo effect.

Well, I don't know that I have any definitive results, but after I updated my PRL, I breached the 1000kbit/sec mark for the first time. Of course, after running the test several more times, my average was lowered by some data stalls (dang-it I can't wait till they fix this new radio), but I would say performance is a little zippier.

Anyone know why the speedtest.net servers pick you up at different locations then you are? Sprint proxying data? Interesting enough, I'm still faster to local servers than the LA which is what speedtest is showing me I should be closest to.

518 kbit/sec
677 kbit/sec

745 kbit/sec
842 kbit/sec
617 kbit/sec
684 kbit/sec
610 kbit/sec
514 kbit/sec
746 kbit/sec
with 60611 prl I got the following in order
988 kbit/sec
658 kbit/sec
679 kbit/sec
753 kbit/sec
721 kbit/sec
768 kbit/sec
with 60711 prl I got the following in order
823 kbit/sec
860 kbit/sec
687 kbit/sec
402 kbit/sec
830 kbit/sec
814 kbit/sec
880 kbit/sec
I am using the 60711 right now because it stayed at 800+ kbit/sec
I don't really know if this helps. I just tried it out to see which one performs best. If there is another way of checking the speed I hope someone would share the results.

disregard this i figured it out. If you are on Verizon all you have to do is download the PRL you want to use. Transfer it to your phone using ActiveSync then do a ##778 edit and browse for the new .prl file. Once you find it you can update to the new file. IT will prompt you to reset your phone. Done!

Ok, time to derail the misinformation train.
All Sprint towers are Rev A, all of them. The only difference at a tower is if it has a Rev A modem or not, and they all do now and no sites are being build with Rev 0 modems.
Why not do this instead of using some random guy's "real" PRL that could have just screwed your phone:
http://www.timeatlas.com/mos/Cell_Phones/General/Updating_Sprint's_PRL/
Rev 0 and Rev A are related like 802.11b and 802.11g, as in they can BOTH BE SERVED OFF THE SAME TOWER. Which, in fact, they are. Those things cost so much money there aren't two sets of towers out there and you magically found a secret set.
So here's why some people got a boost and some didn't, THE REAL ANSWER and not something someone just imagined. The speed of your connection is directly proportional to your signal strength (go look it up it's called DRC) and your distance from a tower dictates how good your signal is. A PRL is a Preferred Roaming List (nothing to do with roaming on another carrier) it's actually a list of Sprint cell sites. What some of you did was update your PRL so now your phone is finding a closer tower than it once did, so now you're getting higher speeds. Now what other people did was put on a similar PRL OR they didn't add any new towers in the vicinity so they saw no improvement.
Got it? Let's recap: a) there are no magic towers that only do Rev A, any Rev A tower is a Rev 0 tower too b) you can just call Sprint for the newest PRL instead of trusting some person on the Internet, I honestly can't believe anyone just used a random PRL from the Internet c) this has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FILE DOWNLOAD SIZE PROBLEM, NOT A THING AT ALL. That is because you're using a test version of the radio ROM and it's got some problem, NOTHING WILL FIX IT UNTIL SPRINT RELEASES THE REAL GPS/REV A ROM, NOTHING.
This is not a "hack" in any way.
Because I just have to know, how many of you are testing outdoors with your hands a few feet away from your antenna? There's no point doing a speed test with your sweaty mitts wrapped around the antenna.
EDIT: Something I just thought of, this PRL may be a test PRL for cell techs to use when testing new cells, so don't be surprised if your phone goes to roaming or drops a call all of the sudden because a tower that's not officially on the air yet goes up and down in the middle of the day while you're trying to use it.
I updated to this PRL and can't force roaming at home anymore. I get the error:
"Welcome to Verizon. Your phone cannot be authenticated at this time. Please try your call again later."
I had my account flagged for a PRL update and had it done, but the PRL is still 60711. What's the latest official PRL and what's the difference between the 6-series and the 2-series?

A PRL is a Preferred Roaming List (nothing to do with roaming on another carrier) it's actually a list of Sprint cell sites. What some of you did was update your PRL so now your phone is finding a closer tower than it once did, so now you're getting higher speeds. Now what other people did was put on a similar PRL OR they didn't add any new towers in the vicinity so they saw no improvement.
The PRL file lists SID and subnet information for both sprint and other carriers and establishes regions and the order in which networks are tried within each region. It does not list "towers." A new tower can be picked up by an old phone with an old PRL with no update. A new site using a new SID would require the update. When a large company like sprint acquires a small company, usually a new PRL is required to incorporate that SID into what your phone sees as home service.
Your phone looks for a SID. A new tower would have the same SID you've been using and be picked up with your existing PRL.
Signal strength (well, SNR actually) and throughput are somewhat proportionate yes. But, the PRL didn't change what towers you are connecting to unless the SID changed. You can check it in the field trial application.
Bottom line is im not buying the speed increase from a PRL either but I think theres still a ton of misconception on the topic. Someone needs to just view 60611 and 60711 in a PRL editor and find the difference.
