because rom rom is placed in a bin file and the question is how to get the file in a bin file...
Hi, can someone help me to write part02 back?
I have just German ROM and I tried all another methods, but it didnt work.
I just wanted to change the string SGH-i780 to HTC-Hermes. It works but i cant flash it to my device back. I tried the original file, but it doesnt work too. I tried to use pdocwrite -w -d DSK1: -b 0x800 -p Part02 0 0x4e40000 Part02.raw and became this:
CopyFileToTFFS(0:0, 4e40000, 00000000)
ERROR: Unable to open host/destination file - Das System kann die angegebene Dat
ei nicht finden.
==English: cant open file - system cant found this file. But its inthe same directory
Then I tried to extract all raw to os.nbh. I used http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=255090&mode=linear But step 8 is imposible for me becouse Custom RUU Updater with NBH Generator and script is not there.
PS I tried to replace it with downloaded english ROM but it didnt work too. I tried mirage_LV_1.8

If someone post English ROM imgfs dump,
I can get start to reconstruction English ROM before my i780 arrival.
Hi Chaimd,
firstly I want to thank you for your work, really very valuable. I downloaded your tools, but perhaps they are compiled in debug mode and they cannot be ran without the appropriate VC++ debug libraries. Can you please share them in a redist format?

Ok, here we go:
1) Extract the Italian ROM from the original .img file by running Mirage_LV_v1.8.exe, stopping it before downloading the rom to the phone (kill the process from the task Manager).
2) Copy c:\_xip0.nb0 to a safe location (another directory).
3) Copy the _xip0.nb0 to i780.bin so you'll have a backup of the file for later use.
4) Convert the _xip0.nb0 from the bynary format to the .ROM format with the command:
cvrtbin -r -a a0a00 -l 5211c00 -w 32 i780.bin
a file named i780.nb0 will be generated.
5) Now split the .ROM file and separate the device independent data:
nbsplit -data 2048 -extra 8 i780.nb0
Two files will be generated: i780.nb0.payload and i780.bin.extra.
6) Open i780.nb0.payload with an HEX Editor and search for the hex value "E9 FD FF". Cut as a block the part of the file before the first "E9 FD FF" occurrence (it should be at hex 20000) and paste it as a new file named i780.nb0.payload.header, then save the i780.nb0.payload stripped file.
7) It's time to use the tadzio tools and extract a dump:
prepare_imgfs i780.nb0.payload -nosplit
You'll obtain a new file called imgfs_raw_data.bin
8) Ok, then the final step:
imgfstodump imgfs_raw_data.bin
and the dump directory will be generated with all the contents of your original rom.
I personally tested all the procedure with complete success.
You can now modify your rom as you like using one of the available kitchens, adding or removing packages and so on.
Now it's time to rebuild the rom with the inverse path:
1) Let's rebuild the data from the dump directory:
imgfsfromdump imgfs_raw_data.bin new_imgfs.bin
then delete the old imgfs_raw_data.bin and rename new_imgfs.bin
del imgfs_raw_data.bin
ren new_imgfs.bin imgfs_raw_data.bin
2) Now let's update the i780.nb0.payload file
make_imgfs i780.nb0.payload -nosplit
3) Fire up your Hex editor and append your i780.nb0.payload.header file to the beginning of your new i780.nb0.payload file
4) Then, we can merge the device dependent data
nbmerge -data 2048 -extra 8 i780.nb0 -conservative
5) The final step is converting back to binary format
conv3 i780.nb0
a file named i780.nb0.b000ff wil be generated. This is the file (renamed to .bin) that you can use with the Mirage loader (update only the pda part).
If anyone wants to try....DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!! I TAKE NO RESPONSABILITY AND I GIVE YOU NO WARRANTY!!!!! you only need a hex editor, tadzio tools and the conversion utilities attached.
The same thing can be performed from a rom dump, that you can easily obtain with pdocread from your running device. Then, you can use the i780.nb0.payload extracted from the original italian ROM as a template for make_imgfs with the imgfs_raw_data.bin generated from your dump.
When I'll have some more spare time, I'll write a tutorial on dumping the xip part, so that the rom cookers among us can try to port a wm 6.1 release on the i780. This device is very amusing and the form factor is really the best you can desire, but the current rom is full of bugs. Bluetooth Audio Gateway is awful, it connects and disconnects randomatically giving me headaches. When connected to a BT car kit, the most of the times the phone answers the calls from the device instead of passing the audio to the BT gateway. Sometimes it answers correctly and passes the call to the BT audio gateway, but two or three minutes later it switches back the audio to the device. Contacts are screwed up when the device tries to sync with the car kit and so on...It's a nightmare. I really hope that someone will cook a better rom.

I have the following problem with my i780 - I ended up buying a Dutch version and reflashed with the WWE_Test2 ROM using Mirage... everything went fine and the device works... BUT whenever the phone loses network connection, the phone part turns itself off (PDA, Wifi and BT continue to work).
And for the life of it, I cannot turn the phone back on... Connection Mgr or going into 'Settings' will tell me that the phone is off, but when trying to turn it on, nothing happens. The only way to turn it on again is to reset the device... has anyone else seen this? It's rather annoying...

This is the basics of rom dumping and you can find all the detailed instructions in the wiki. Anyway:
prepare_imgfs.exe Part02.raw -nosplit
and you'll get imgfs_raw_data.bin

Topogigi i have done what you said and now how i can mix files obtained with wm6.1 files.
Topogigi

The first part is trivial. Dump a rom with your desired build of WM 6.1 and replace all the files with the same name from this dump to your original dumped rom. Then you can use g'reloc to rebuild module addresses.
The hard part comes when you'll realize that you cannot actually find a WM 6.1 rom that contains the required resources and dlls for a 128 dpi unit (all the files containing "128" in the name). So, the best way for now is cooking a rom with realvga built in (in this way you can use all the 96 dpi files and dlls that you can easily find in a wm6.1 rom built for a vga device).
When you are ready with all the files and modules replaced, you have to edit the .hv files to allow realvga by default.
The last and hardest part consists in extracting and modifying the XIP part of the rom for transplanting at least coredll.dll from the WM 6.1 release you have chosen. I'm trying to extract the XIP portion from the original rom, but neither MSFLSHTOOL nor ROMMASTER allow me to extract that part (the first says that the file is not a MSFLSH50 file, the latter can't identify the ending address of the XIP).
Remember that the XIP part in Samsung ROM is SRPX encrypted just like the ASUS ones, so you have to use special tools to work it out.

SRPX2XIP worked fine, but XIP2SRPX didn't work correctly with i780.
I'll report it if I found a method to rebuild XIP.
So you had better give priority to rebuild DXHC1 including a new driver.
I disassembled FingerMouse driver and almost understood how it worked.
But it is hard to make new FingerMouse driver from the beginning.

I agree, but nowadays I can't find a DXHC1 rom dump to work with.
I noticed that the MSFLASH50 header in the original ROM is different from usual (after the MSFLSH50 signature, you'll find a byte with value 01 instead of 00). This doesn't allow all the tools we know to recognize the signature as a valid one. NBINFO fails, just like IMGFSTONB, MSFLSHTOOL and all the others.
My last chance is extracting the XIP part by hand using a Hex editor or starting from a pdocread dump, but if XIP2SRPX fails too, we are stuck for the moment.

Yes, I know. My ROM analyzer have been corrected. I think that NBINFO supports this format but just a point of MSFLSH50 offset address. :)

Ok, here you can find (chaimd already has it) the XIP part of the original Italian rom dumped with xipport.
I had to extract the XIP part from the NB0.payload by hand (used my HEX Editor, stripped all the part of the header before the real beginning of the XIP partition and stripped the IMGFS partition at the end, then decrypted with SRPX2XIP).
EDIT: THIS IS ONLY A PARTIAL DUMP!!!! SEE BELOW

It could be, the address is at 0x800 instead of 0x200, but it is not really an offset issue. If you change that byte from 01 to 00, nbinfo recognizes the signature but gives incorrect infos. So, the header format is really different (i checked).
Topogigi
24th April 2008, 01:38 PM
Ok, I think I found the problem:
Extracting the XIP by hand from the nb0.payload file, I realized that it is composed by more than one section. When you try to reencrypt it with XIP2SRPX, only one section is encoded. XIPPORT also gives only a PARTIAL DUMP!!! (I checked it dumping at first all the xip file, then dumping it section by section: some modules are not dumped if you dot it in a single pass from the complete file)
But the tool as is works like a charm. I made a byte compare between the file before SRPX2XIP and the file after XIP2SRPX. The first section after the SRPX signature is the same byte by byte, so the tool really work. Now we should be able to find a way....

Oh, sorry.
mamaich's header file has the information for the size of reserved block.
It's included in imgfstools.
But MSFLSH50 header is used in mounting ImgFS.
Normally, BootLoader would not look the region informations in MSFLSH50 header.
I had handled these area when I made Treo750 to freeing ULDR and ExtROM for RealBigStorage.
And my Japanese 96dpi ROM is running on my i780.
Maybe, the key point of bootable XIP is the first 32 bytes of SRPX or last of boot partition.
I'll inspect those area. :)

The first is boot partition includes ULDR, the second is XIP.
It's normal in official ROMs.
Only some highly costomized ROM was free ULDR, like mamaich's or bepe's ROM.

Got new i780 with ROM versions CE OS 5.2.1944 (Build 18547.0.7.3), PDA/Phone i780MSHC3, BT SW 2.0.3 HW 2.0.1, WiFi SW 1.0.0 HW 1.0.
Default preconfig is UK English, T-Mobile.
Has Hard Reset applet and can also Hard Reset by Gn+Rd+Pwr keys.
Is this new or older than the ones being talked about here?

This is the basics of rom dumping and you can find all the detailed instructions in the wiki. Anyway:
prepare_imgfs.exe Part02.raw -nosplit
and you'll get imgfs_raw_data.bin
Hummm... Tell me something please: I dumped the ROM of my portuguese i780 and I got Part00.raw, Part01.raw and Part02.raw and after that converted the Part02.raw to .bin like you said above!
Is it ready to flash to my i780 using Mirage_LV, I mean, can I use the resulting imgfs_raw_data.bin file directly with Mirage_LV or do I need to do something more?
I wanna try i780MSHC3_UKENG_PDA, but if I need to send my pppc to warranty I want to be able to return it to it's original ROM!

i have tried the method listed also and used mirage to load the resulting bin into the i780, it shows that the flash completes at 100% but it never prompts to disconnect. i waited for 1/2hr after the 100% indicator, disconnected it and it reports that the flash failed...
however, the phone can still boot...
not too sure if this is the right method to do the flash though...

The proble lies in cvrtbin.exe
It makes the file to grow instead of shrinking it. I'm working on it, but no solution for the moment. I think that chaimd can help with his conversion utilities, but the one he posted before in this thread at page 11 is not usable because it is compiled in debug mode and you cannot use it if you haven't got visual studio 2005 installed....

Probably, the Hard-reset feature is in Bootloader.
I'm inspecting where is Bootloader and Phone in device, now.
But I have not a device that has new firmware.
And I'm hard to get new dumped RAW files for non-cooperative of a community.

Actually, the way of Topogigi goes well if I do not make IMGFS big.
His method is more simple than mine.
My method needs manually checked and binary editting
to suit for various condition.
It is difficult to explain all the technique
to a person don't understand deep ROM structure.

and you'll get imgfs_raw_data.bin
But It seems that with this file the rom upgrade fails!
Guess I'm gonna have to try to understand a little bit better the rom editing part

When you say MSN, do you mean microsoft messenger? It works fine on my device (DXHC4). I think it only use the default setting set by the phone doesn't matter what you set on the "connection" setting. What I do is to locate the setting it use and modified that to setting works on my operator.
I think MSN problem is caused from automatic URL translation, HTTP to WAP.

chaimd, is there a way to edit \Windows\mxip_oemdrivers_101.provxml?
Or can you cook a rom with this file corrected? I looekd its content and it forces Windows Live to use wap.
I even noticed that a new cooked DXHD1 rom posted here has a modified mxip_oemdrivers_101.provxml, to avoid connection redirection.

Thanks for your suggestion.
But this make Messenger connect through GPRS but I want to use wifi. And It's the file I mentioned in the previous post that forces Messenger to use GPRS.

Please chaimd, can you edit DXHD1 rom with file attached here? Maybe this can unlock WLM...
I tried your tools and got the dump folder but when I use Topogigi way to get the bin image back, I get only an invalid one.

I never understand why companies as large as samsung will not pony up for decent English translations of their service manuals!
This manual lists a copy of apps that don't ring any bells (pg 3-1):
Postcard
MTV
anyone?

I'm trying to dump my polish rom with pdocread, but i'm getting this message:
"ERROR: ITReadDisk: outbuf=Null
- device is not ready"
I have vista ultimate, and i've installed enablerapi.exe on the device, does enybody knows what is problem? I want to update rom, but i prefer to do it with old one backuped.
Coud this error may be caused by CID lock? I brought my samsung i780 from mobile operator.

What is the "Hard Reset" key combination? (What keys)
And what does it?
My phone got "bricked" yesterday and I uploaded an english bin-file to it. (First I tried an Italian version with WM 6.1 but that sucked cause I can't read italian) Now it works again but my phone has swedish keyboard and I really want a Swedish ROM instead of the english. Is it possible to download the ROM from a healthy phone? I have a colleague with another i780 with swedish ROM and I would like to use that one in my own.
I also would like to know if it's possible to backup all parameters in the phone so I don't need to reinstall everything next time it got bricked.
