Samsung i780 - Is it possible to run Hard SPL and other ROMs?

Hello Everyone!

I want to thank you all for making this site so informative and to the point - as I have been a frequent visitor since the days of my first (original) SPV. I have finally decided to try a different phone to my usual HTC choice and have just got the Orange i780 (which is a great phone! :-) )

I was wondering if it might be possible to run something like HARD SPL on it and then put on a cooked ROM as the supplied Orange ROM is, as ever, far from thrilling. I would appreciate any help and if anyone wants some more information about the phone (as so little is currently available at the moment) ask away - and I will reply as soon as I get the chance.

yup- they have. But its a gorgeous phone so as soon as it becomes possible to put new ROMs on it, it will be one of the best ones around in its form factor. Its nice to have something that feels half the weight of the TYTN2 and more than half as thin :-)

Definetely. It's the fastest WM device ever. The mousepad is really cool. Better resolution (also yet, many programms have problems with it, not correct displaying etc.). Amazing build quality.

One thing that's missing is a cooked rom. The Software has bugs over bugs. a developer customized rom would be amazing.

But the device itself and esp. it's performance (processor) is the best ever!

As a favor to the community would you be so kind as to upload the SDHC drivers from the i780 to the FTP section of the site? That way people with other Samsung devices (SCH-i760, SGH-i760, SCH-i730 etc) could perhaps get full usage out of their SD Cards? The SGH-i780 itself looks pretty cool. Did it come unlocked?

You make it sound like putting on a diff ROM would be very easy - please let me know how! :-) I have always had to use HardSPL and other methods prior to that... Itsnot really full of bugs, its just the annoying ROM orange with useless things there and ... well I just want to run Schap's ROM for example or any other I choose

Sorry i got no idea im afraid....But i thought thats the way it works.....Use a rom dumper which will dump the rom to a memory card and then build a installable ROM from the dump of the generic handset.

Might be wrong though.

I don't think the i780 is full of bugs, more a couple of glitches which aren't too annoying.
There is no vital bug and there is nothing which can't be fixed with the next OS update.
The most annoying thing was actually that the i780 didn't come with any navigation/GPS software and apparently only Google Maps and Garmin XT mobile seem to work fine, the others(like Tom Tom 6 for example) require the tool GpsGate to work with the i780.
The i780 is VERY fast, not only the CPU but also the GPU. I actually started to love this little thing, it really is a stylish and pretty light powerhouse.

Right now, I think the i780 is the most powerful Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone on the market(considering CPU & GPU performance) and also the most underestimated device too. Battery life is decent too, build quality is impaccable. I just wish Samsung would have provided a 5MP camera and a quadband GSM/Triband UMTS functionality, especially since the new Marvell CPU seems to provide hardware support for both.

Have you tried holding down 6 and the # key when you power the phone up..this should hard reset it....if its like other samsung win mobiles.

I am just wondering if anyone has had more info about putting on cooked ROMs? I am loving the i780 right now - it looks great, is so thin and to top it off, the battery performs much better than I thought it would! Great!

They should be in the Device-Windows folder called something like sdbus another is sdmemory and another sdhc they each may have initials for the name of the i780..what is it the black jack 2? If so each may have bj after each name..so it may be like sdbusbj sdmemorybj etc..Just use Total Commander or Rescos File Explorer software to go to the Windows folder in the device and copy and paste each one into a folder on the Safestore and just post them here or you can send it to my email address I can PM you. Does any of the directions make any sense to you so far? Thanks.

mine was korean changed this way to US. How I got to US? at the end of the list as I recall there is an "other" option. choosing it will take you to another page with tons more choices. Hope this helps. As for the codes, I simply used the ones from the samsung i600 I previously owend and it worked.
Note: maybe you need to go to regional setting under settings inside windows mobile after you choose the preconfiguration. Also did u try hard reset?

It must be a different ROM by the look of it ... anyway you can do a ROM dump so it can be uploaded to my phone? I have no idea how to do it though!

Where are this codes from i600? i can´t find it...

I can´t enter on the "other" optios, called "internal" with the code used in preconfiguration.

I have a Portuguese ROM and i would like to change it to english, but UK don´t work, just HArd Reset the device, but still in portuguese.

Ive just tried it on my i780 and works fine at 128dpi...but it also includes language packs....so maybe worth a try as it changes the language from the default to what ever cab you install.

Spoke to Samsung today .... and it would appear that the rumours are true and that no -one including Samsung know how to perform hard reset !!

They also confirmed they would not be able to flash update the ROM to UK version for me .... GREAT !!!

I really don't understand how these mobile manufacturer handle and communicate with their staff, example, giving out fake/mis-leading info. to customers just because they don't know much/enough about what they are paid for.

i780 do have boot loader of some kind in hardware level, hold left Fn (the button where you press for front row key) AND ENTER key and pin reset brings you to emergency mode, which claims to be used for download applications with usb, from what it looks like, it is used for downloading codes from a lower level.

From service manual of i780, it stated clearly that the device is flash-able, it even show the exe file, rom image name, tools and steps on the flash process, the catch is we need someone who can get into Samsung mobile biz partners FTP.

So it is, lets say...policy? that they "would not be able to flash" the i780, not the device itself do not support flashing operation.

About the hard reset, I personally thinks there is no way of Samsung missing out a button combo of hard reset in boot level, during the developing, during training on sale person, how many times would the device needed to be hard reset with a Windows mobile OS device? back to factory every time? don't think so...

My wild guess on the i780 a very strange keys combo was assigned(wonder why and how would someone do this kind of design, we are not asking for cheats of games, we only want hard reset of our device!), so the staff who did the GREAT documentary miss that out.

I have no luck too on the hard reset combo yet, same boat as everyone here does, I spend 2 days to come up with the Emergency mode, shall we start up a thread to try all key combos together? (2 keys combo gives how many combinations?)

And to anyone who is planning for i780.

The problem here is we can't even boot into the windows mobile (WM logo and load forever till battery gone).....wonder does these key works in the samsung booting screen.........(will try.......but well chances are small........)

(A bit of google seems return the above key is only for some samsung phone not with WM OS, and I tried to input those key in the samsung booting screen with no luck......)

while we dont have the hardware key combination for hard resets, maybe this will work for now.....has anyone tried using a program for Safemode on this ppc?.....perhaps thats the only way to perform a hardreset for those that are stuck on the welcome screen.....because the safemode will kick in when the ppc detects resets in a loop and then thats when you're able to enter the ppc in safemode just like a normal pc......i guess from here you can either uninstall the program that was incompatible or go through start-setting etc etc-hard reset option......anyone here cares to try this and let us know which safemode program they are using and if it works?.....thanks

You must click on preconfiguration than will ask for passwort that is *#81230*# than you can sie wich country you can setup choose any country than will hardrest automaticly. After than make it again and choose your country you living.

I see the point you dont have preconfig menu in my version i have 4 options.
So what Software version you have? and what PDA version you have?
But today i have another solution for hard reset: typ *2767*3855#
Or switch of your device and after press 0 buton and switch on your device you must hold both buton together than the divice will ask for hardreset.

Do u mean that with this sequence you can hard reset your i780?
Possibly a stupid question: if your device is loked or looping for a sw corruption, can you hard reset with this sequence instead of going trough the settings menu?

The Hardreset will delete all settings and data after your device is like a virgin again :D

My phone is also not perfect specialy i miss the software extention for GPS setting. I have only setting for Externel GPS. But not for extented GPS where you can setup AGPS.
And on my phone do not run GARMNIN XT after start the software disapear.
I get only RUN i-GO MY way but resolution is not perfect :)

So i wait for a 100% ROM in my rom i misss some setups.
Seems my rom is only 80%.

So i wait that Samsung bring WM 6.1 Update

Sorry abt that I tried it with the device on. I read from another forum that you can press the SOFT RESET twice in succession in order to HARD RESET the phone. Maybe you could try this? Hope this works...:confused:

Can someone explain more on "poking the soft reset button twice in succession"?

"Can someone try if the below steps can cold reset the I780???

Not special you need only the original modem driver from sgh-i600 or from sgh-i607 black jack. you can find it in internet search in google.com

You should download the Italy ROM and the loader and flash your bricket i780 but remember you need the cabel driver look search for modem driver sgh-i600 in google.com or.italy.

Good luck and sorry i dont know how dump rom never done befor. maybe the japanies guy he knows

I extract the Italian ROM like below;

Convert i780_XIHA7_Rev12.img to _xip0.nb0
This _xip0.nb0 is not true .nb0. This is MS BIN formatted, called B000FF format.
Strip MS BIN headers from _xip0.nb0(MS BIN) into diskimage.nb
(I scratched a tiny filter tool)
nbsplit -data 2048 -extra 8 diskimage.nb
You'll get diskimage.nb.payload
diskimage.nb.payload is 128KB BootLoader + IMGFS.
You can get imgfs.bin to strip BootLoader by a binary editor.
And you can dump imgfs by imgfstodump.In the reverse steps, maybe, we are able to rebuild a flashable ROM image from dumped English IMGFS by pdocread.:D

It is a WM Pro device, as far as we have here, most apps does work correctly with 320x320, some apps that direct access to the display do not, example, some games does not work correctly.

after pressing "detect", before plug-in usb cable, you need to put i780 in emergency mode (by fn and enter depressed and reset).

I had entering the emergency mode as you said before pressing "detect" but downloading stays on 0% without further progression.

For your effort, we know the right sector size is 0x800.
The raw files are correct. Usually, Part00 is BootLoader, and Part01 is XIP.
Part03 is your internal storage. You shouldn't post Part03.

You guys ROCK! I picked upn i780 two days ago only to discover that it was dutch... tried all the 'engineering menu' settings, but nothing made it speak english to me :-) (guess that only works with the Korean ones that have a US-option in the menu)...
So just to summarize: we know have an english ROM and a way of flashing? Any chance you guys can post the instructions????

I have checked roughly EBOOT. But I couldn't find any message suspected for Hard Reset.

I check Part02.raw as WWE ImgFS dump. The real size of WWE ImgFS is 0x47C6800.
Unfortunately, because WWE ImgFS is slightly lager than Italian ImgFS,
we can't choice most simplest way.
I think we must made a few tool to separate ImgFs and generate lost extra chunks.

I'm going to ispect these files more.

I have had a call ongoing with their service department 'assistance' who have been stalling for weeks saying 'were looking into it' eventually rang today to say 'there is not hardware solution' .... 'send a copy of your warranty and receipt and we will consider a factory re-load' .... great customer service ! .... and a shocking omission from the hardware build in my opinion !

Can I ask did you called Samsung UK?

To be honest, me and my friends had file support to UK Samsung for quite a while and did gave some pressure on them, we got very simular answer from Samsung UK lastnight, and our guessing on the issue is:

Bootloader on earlier i780 does not have hard reset, it might be a miss out on the function, either by mistake or "over estimate" to their product.

This is silly, does not make sense and bad to customers and CS department from mobile OP, no one would buy, sell and support a device that when ever it hangs, it needs to goes back to support center....(think of how many devices are sold each model)

From what I have gather, I believe that some of the device, very possible FR and/or SG release of i780 do/might come with the hard reset in their bootloader, which in our case (us who got the first lot, example UK/Orange/ITA lot) nope, no luck!

We might:
a. Send it back and let them reload the OS, very possible Bootloader.
b. Let us rock and roll ourself, build our own ROM and flash them, come on if you the reader is/are staff of Samsung, do you think is fair for us who is out here sit still? If you are staff, post some info to help us instead of requesting some nice person to remove the service manual on some public net space, you got the right and better things to do right?

I personally was very upset to know we have to deal with this hard reset issue ourself, honest it is very common sense how to hard reset should be stated in the user guide, it is impossible to ask user to send back the device no matter at no cost, like my case, I am in overseas, sit here 3 weeks waiting to use the device I paid for just because of their design/policy/manual mistake? why should we wait? whats the point for card backups? do they expect us to wait for the send back every time our device hangs? thats just silly..

thinks of starting a website on the issue, I think we should let more people knowing the problem before pulling their hard earn $$ for a device needed to send back to service whenever it needed a hard reset, wonder anyone would like to support?

When you run the loader Mirage_LV_v1.8.exe, and select the ROM image (IMG) EBOOT+PDA+PHONE, notice it will create 3 images in c:\ which are:
_eboot.nb0
_xip0.nb0
_phone.bin

Do you think might help us to understand/hack/change how the loader work?

I have download the loader, Italian ROM, and modem driver, Run the loader then select the ROM files, press "DETECT", connect my i780 to computer and "PDA device 1 ready to download" shows.

But downloading status stays on 0% without progression.

Am I doing anything wrong?

Manually handling of binary files was not so hard work than I thought.
I needed some preparations of files and only Non-universal two tiny tools.
... I made a test WWE ROM:D

But I can't test the ROM. I do'nt have i780 in my hand yet.
I checked it by binary editor and some checking tool,
but the ROM is not tested on real i780.

Flashing the test ROM is very risky.
It should be used only at one's own risk.

Maybe, if EBOOT is alive, you will be able to flash back to Italian ROM.
It seems that flashing EBOOT is separeted process in Mirage_LV tool.

But nobody had really confirmed.

You do not need AS to flash the ROM. you need the EM download mode, please search the thread for how to reach EM Download mode.

In WIFI setting, in the tabs Networks adapters, when i try to select "My Network card connects To" , no options are avaliable. ( Ni "Work", ni "The Internet" )

Sometimes, Windows Movile fails to do provision XMLs. I don't know why? I extracted English Imgfs, and I found Office Mobile and OneNote.
There shuld be executive files, shortcuts and folder icon of the applications in \Windows directory.

Dear All, I am a newbie here, I ve a brick i780 recently and tried to flash the rom, but I have problem that wont allow me to flash it.I ve downloaded all the stuffs for flashing i780 already. I am using windows XP sp2. I found I cant install the modem driver for i780, when I plug in i780 (with emergency mode on) , win xp detects the phone but when it tried to search for the driver, it show the driver software cannot be installed. I have already tried different version of driver (e.g. sgh-i607). I stuck here and cant go any further. Can any experts here help me about this in details?

I put a separate thread up explaining the steps. follow them exactly. you don't need the phone to be plugged in or on when you run the loader; and then load the rom into it. only then do you switch on your phone and push the 'detect' button.

Not sure if this is ROM related but when i select the pohone to do a xtra gps download, it turns the phone off for some reason and then says it is unable to download! (Obviously as the phone has just been turned off)

Anybody got an ideas if this is rom related or just some other setting?

I report there is no such problem on WWE_test_02, tested GPS and report it works fine.

Please remember when you dis/enable AGPS, you will need to reboot then download XTRA, or it won't download correctly.

I accidentally click the "Phone" button and uploaded the ROM. The process failed at ~67%. After I used the "Pda" function to upload the ROM again, it seems that I can't turn on the phone now. I guess the radio ROM has been screwed up.

Does anyone know how to fix it ? I guess I can upload the correct radio ROM to make the phone function work again, but where can I find a workable radio ROM ?

i change my system to XP and now it works.i dump all the files from the rom.so the question is solved.
but now the new question is when i cook the dump file and build them
how can i transfer the part2.raw file to .bin?

1) GPS cannot connect whatver I do,
2) UsIm is not accepted (shuts the pone on and off conexcutively), only regular SIM works

after you cook the rom files,use imgfstools and type :

Part00.raw and Part01.raw are needed too. Because they are needed for the bootable part and ipl and spl.

i use imgfstools to extra the files to "dump"
change the files,edit the initflashfiles.dat,default.hv,and user.hv
and use buildimgfs to rebuild it to parto2.raw
all the step is common as other device's rom cook

He gave us many hints enough to make rebuilding tools.
It seems that there is no secret.
There is only lack of efforts and understands.
Read this thread before claiming, plz.

But before asking him, you should learn ROM cooking basics more and more.
Part00.raw is ULDR, and Part01.raw is XIP. These are not IPL/SPL.

Hi, can someone help me to write part02 back?
I have just German ROM and I tried all another methods, but it didnt work.
I just wanted to change the string SGH-i780 to HTC-Hermes. It works but i cant flash it to my device back. I tried the original file, but it doesnt work too. I tried to use pdocwrite -w -d DSK1: -b 0x800 -p Part02 0 0x4e40000 Part02.raw and became this:
CopyFileToTFFS(0:0, 4e40000, 00000000)
ERROR: Unable to open host/destination file - Das System kann die angegebene Dat
ei nicht finden.
==English: cant open file - system cant found this file. But its inthe same directory

Then I tried to extract all raw to os.nbh. I used http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=255090&mode=linear But step 8 is imposible for me becouse Custom RUU Updater with NBH Generator and script is not there.

PS I tried to replace it with downloaded english ROM but it didnt work too. I tried mirage_LV_1.8

Disclaimer: I don't own a Kaiser, so I have not tested this myself.
