I have included a picture of my current screen to show the source of this threads question:

Is it possible to remove the grayed-out button highlight?
I have tried editing the files with HTC Home & Customizer but to no avail. It may be controlled within a .dll or the image may be located eleswhere.

I modified my 6-tab buttons with indicators that will represent which tab is selected without needing the highlight. Since each button comprises of (2) images (icon & iconselected), you can create buttons which will indicate which tab is in use.

If anyone has ideas please let me know...

**edit** I figured it out. I used Paint.net to make every file inside of the \Program Files\HTC Home Customizer\Files\bg\Transparent folder completely transparent which did the trick...

I've tried that but it doesn't work too well. If you change your icons and background color you will see what I mean. The best thing that I've come up with is to change the HH_BEZEL_fill.png color to match the color of your background, or as close as possible. Your highlighted icon will appear a little darker or tinted to the color you choose, but you shouldn't see any highlight around the icon if the colors match up. The only drawback with this is that you have to have a different HH_BEZEL_fill.png to match each of your backgrounds.
