Isn't that just for the 3G connection?
I tried to start it yesterday but nothing happends.
Maybe we can try to overwrite it with the app from a TyTn II or something?

I think some sort of registry edit blocks it from running.
pick up any WM phone and goto windows and run it. it will bring up the phone app.

rapwly did it.
Steps to try and recover SnapVue

Firstly try to Remove the battery and restart the handset.
If this fails please go into Snap View Mode and try to Tap in the bottom right hand corner of the Screen were the Settings button is meant to be located. If the Menu pops up please click on Clear Storage and follow the prompts.
There is a Hard Disk Recovery Method the process is directly out of the manual below.

5.2 Hard Disk Recovery

In case of system failure, Windows Vista® can be recovered to the hard disk by running the hard disk recovery utility. Before starting this utility, make sure to back up important data and files.

To run the hard disk recovery utility

1.
Shut down the Mobile Computer and then power it on again.

2.
At the start of the boot-up process, immediately press F3 to run the hard disk recovery utility.

3.
You will then see the following screen:

Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N)104 Securing and Managing the Mobile Computer

Press N to continue with the hard disk recovery process. If you press Y, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.

4.
The next message prompts you whether or not to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data:

Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N) NDo you want to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data? (Y/N)

If, aside from drive C, you have created other partitions in the hard disk and you want to keep them, press N. If you press Y, your partitions will be deleted.

5.
A confirmation message then prompts you whether or not to continue. Press Y to start the hard disk recovery process. If you press N, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.

6.
After the recovery process is complete, slide and hold the POWER/HOLD switch for about four seconds to shut down the Mobile Computer.

\windows\startup (inicio in spanish) isnt being executed so I cant take control. And of course, imposible to hard reset, etc, etc....

don't give up so soon. it is not impossible to hard reset. did anyone run enterbootloader.exe from vista yet? after running it, try running mtty and see if it can detect the device.

[QUOTE=cmonex]i've read all posts in this thread, but saw your solution doesn't work for some people, the usbtool in debugtools is explicitly intended for this purpose so maybe it'll work for everyone.

Could you pleased post the debug tools? I would like to try some com port switching and gps finding. Thanks!

OK, i'll upload it soon!

that's nothing to do with the windows mobile part. unless it handles more than just the hard drive.

But i think the snapvue be formatting with recovery process..

The recovery using the F3 key ONLY restores Vista, I hvae done this a few times trying to get a cisco vpn client running on the device.

I even have removed \windows\inicio and system boots. Maybe is booting from other directory....

er of course it boots. it's just startup dir, to run apps automatically. nothing to do with the system boot process itself

OK got the debugtools uploaded to my site

http://hpcmonex.net/debugtoolspart1.zip

some of the tools might not work ... i did not check if all dependencies are in the zip. please let me know if any of the apps fails to run.
i know for sure that the GPS tools will not work because you need the gps driver files too. (no worries i got those too)
and i did not include some that i was not sure about what they are doing. i will find out soon hopefully

but what is of particular interest to you is the USBTool. put that in \windows and run it, that'll allow virtual usb connection to vista.

usage (quoting from a review): "USBTool. This offers a menu with two options - cable in and cable out. When you select cable in with Vista running it creates a virtual USB connection between the two personalities of the HTC Shift. This allows you to run up Mobile Device Center and explore the WM OS from Vista."

that reminds me, here are also some vista tools that may be useful (one of them is for wdmc usb setup?!). i don't know if all of them are present on the retail version of the shift

The debugtoolspart1.zip file seems to be corrupt in some way, it showed me a list of various files but when extracted, i only get 2 shortcuts and one cab file.

edit - OK, I'm a numpty. I had 'hide protected operating system files' turned on.

Now Vista is searching for drivers....

Yup, it works, Device centre has connected to the WinMo side.

Thanks for that cmonex, it's a lot more user friendly than the previous method we were using.

Yup, place it into the windows folder on the wm side, then run it.

You'll need to email it to yourself, so a data sim is required.

Uncompress zip file and copy today.reg to shift. Then import it using resco registry and you will have access in today screen to.

3)tasks

just came in to say nice job to everyone. looks like loads of progress. some things i would do though are to

replace the snapvue.dll in the windows folder with the one in the snapvue cab for athena.

it will then give u back the start menu on top.

use a reg editor and u'll be able to then get ur soft keys back.

change tsk to something else and ull have a pretty normal windows.

then just use the registry on here to get all the today plugins.

ill try to find some time to get the proper dlls for wifi, bt, and sd so everyone can get those back.

Hi.
Not missing but installing sp1, etc. And of course bringing full wm6 to snapvue but.....without realvga, hehe
Usbtool is easy to use. This is what I did.
1) Turn phone off. It will stop Internet Sharing service. If you skip this step sometimes the process wont work.
2) Run usbtool on winmo side and then menu/cable in
3) switch to vista side. Windows Mobile center shoud start connecting in few seconds.
4) Manager your pocket pc from vista, play with it, etc
5) Once you ve finished switch to winmo, bring usbtool to front, then menu/cable_out. Then exit
6) Turn phone on again. It should connect 3g correctly in vista side.....

u need realvga for it. man the shift is in so bad need of modding.

here is how realvga works as far as i know:

realvga tells wm to stop using the 192 resources that make everything 192 dpi. instead it tells it to use the ones in the cab for eather 96 or 128 dpi. are u guys installing both realvga cabs? the realvga app AND the resources for 128 or 96dpi?

check the threads on athena forums to make sure. if u werent then u know now why it didnt work.

I did the following process and gain the access to file system of WM side.

First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.

I can also connect to WM file system through WM device manager on Vista side.
There are few questions need to be answered.

1. How to install the *.cab file on WM side? I always get an error saying about the certificate.
2. How to install quickmenu on WM side?
3. If I uncheck the Snapvue from the items to be shown on today, what will happen?

Thanks in advance!

can any one kindly solve the issue for me please!
many thanks again!

1. How to install the *.cab file on WM side? I always get an error saying about the certificate.
Edit the registry as described in this thread by Daniel earlier to enable WM to execute cab files
2. How to install quickmenu on WM side?
Email the exe to yourself (exe extension removed so it does not get blocked by your mailsystem, rename it back to .exe as soon as you have saved it)
then execute it
3. If I uncheck the Snapvue from the items to be shown on today, what will happen?
dont do that, your today screen will be empty - some of us suffered a whole day... read posting 171, enable those first.

Regarding the SD drivers, I will give these a go if some one can upload a set. I did notice that at least sdbus.dll was quite considerably smaller than the file on my Kaiser. Hopefully its these minor dll changes that'll be enought to detect the SD card successfully.
Ive compared great chunks of the registry and compared to my Dutty's ROM for Kaiser, they are very similar in regards to entries for SD cards etc.

It would be nice if possible. Access to SD and GPS would bring us gps navigation, etc. Access to GPS will be possible, I am sure. We only have to get the drivers working. But I am not very sure about shared devices between winmo and vista, like BT, WIFI and SD. Obviously one side should control the device (probably vista) and the other one should act as client but It needs software to do it and I am not sure about it.....

I did try the HTCGPSTool provided in the dev tools, but no luck. I can connect on COM 8, but it hangs winmo. I also tried other versions HTCGPStool.exe for the qualcom chip, but still nothing.

Is there an associated driver that I am missing? I am worried that the antenna is not connected. If that is the case I would be willing to try to connect it if possible.

I never got into any of the ROM Cooking projects, so I was just interested in knowing if there is anywhere to download for example the entirely unpacked Kaiser ROM or another of the QUALCOMM chipset devices. I have no qualms with trying to load most of the missing drivers and reg settings to see if there is any device connections.

My Clearstorage let me reset to a vanilla build again, So I'm going to test putting this in as a service instead of a Startup app. Can cancel every reboot, but will hopefully give me the chance to reset if something hasnt quite worked.

Yep, I ve tried it. I unassambled ShagCtrldll.dll and there are interesting api functions, like reset, installcertificate, etc, but there isnt any tool to execute remote programs. In order to execute a program on the device using RAPI (very easy) first must be set a usb connection. We know how to set this connection from winmo side using usbtool but I dont know how to do it from vista side. If we get it using any of the debug tools for vista side then I will do a little program that executes ClearStorage.exe from vista side....:D

Also does anybody know anything about finding and unlocking Extended ROMs at all. Like on most of the phones they store install apps on them. If the Shift has one, and can be easily unlocked and updated then this maybe a way to automate the rebuild with disabling the "Snapvue" functionality without having to send files over data.

Currently I am living in Switzerland and the data tariff for my UK SIM is obviously void (and as a temporary worker getting data packages is almost impossible), so after a £400+ phone bill, my preference is to keep emailing to a minimum, even with the solution for disabling snapvue, you would still need to at minimum send over USBTool to allow access from Vista.

So any ideas RE extended ROM, I'd be happy to try...

OK have just done some quick reading. Appears that the Kaiser does not actually have or use an Extended ROM. To this effect, do we believe that the Shift may have also followed this design.

Which leads us back to gaining access via bootloader etc I presume....

Since I can't run any cab files before edit the registry, how do get to install regedit on WM side

Can some one kindly explain steps in detail?

You need to edit the registry on the WinMo side.
You can download Schaps Registry Editor from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347178
Unpack it on your pc using winrar.

Rename the REGIST~1.001 file to RegistryEditor (no file extension) and email that to yourself. In WinMo, save it from the email - when you do this rename it to RegistryEditor.exe. You can then run it.

QuickMenu can be downloaded here -

I mean my treo has more memory than the shift

just got my device in the bootloader.
see attachment, just open this on wm side.
problem is that the screen stays black (JUST LIKE THE STARTUP OF WM SIDE)

excellent. someone finally tried enterbootloader.

you can also run it on vista side, but needs the usb connection to WM, then just execute a RUU to enter bootloader.

are you able to connect to the bootloader via mtty in vista? i posted mtty earlier in this thread

if yes... then only one task is remaining before we can fully make the shift a normal WM6 device.

and this is... find a way to enter bootloader using key combination during reset. i.e. without bootable WM6.

p.s.: if mtty is working... can you tell me what this command reports: info 7

I think our biggest issue right now is figuring out how to perform a hard reset on the box, no one wants to risk their 1600 dollar baby without being able to revive it.

Ok whos gonna replace the snapvue.dll ??

only replace it if you first install the required certs for it. did PK tell you that?

otherwise snapvue will just stop working

also, replace whole snapvue, not just the dll

but if you pay attention to these things, the end result will be nice; it'll keep snapvue and allow you access to WM too

Well im nearing the end of the road with HTC Support.

I am in contact with the developers from Taiwan.

They have told me the following:

1. There is no hardware method of performing a hard reset on the shift's winmo side.
2. That if they determine that the winmo side is corrupt, one would have to return the device to HTC (your local HTC support) and they would perform a ROM reload of the device.
3. They will not release the ROM to me to fix myself.
4. They are considering and checking with higher ups if they can give me the procedures they use for flashing the ROM. (I told them i could get the ROM 3rd party) They are quoting a security issue with releasing the ROM.

So there you have it. BE CAREFUL.

oh why do you believe this total bullshit. :P
i already noticed many people at an OEM company often don't know what the device is like at all.

1) you can clearly see people here have performed a hard reset just fine! the SPL supports clearstorageflag anyway.
2) nope, you can reflash yourself as soon as shift project can release a hardSPL (needs a test device of course). then of course custom roms!! but project needs a device for that.
3) who cares? :P especially with hardspl. but these people are so nasty... i have tricked many such companies before and worked out how to flash the devices (i'm not talking about HTC devices now, various WM and winCE devices).
4) you should not have told them you can get the rom third party, because a) it is not true *yet* b) better not to tell them such things.

what i'd like is dump the SPL from one of the devices you people have. so i can see exactly which SPL you got, which features it has etc. if someone wants to help then please contact me in a PM.

if it is an SPL that has a hidden hard reset key combo we just need to figure that out then (it is possible to find out either by copious disasm or by trying keys randomly).

if it doesn't have the function compiled in, there is still a way to solve that.

when i copy a large cab file on it complains about size whenever it drops below 10 megs, no documents, no nice browser, (or the cache to go with it), no pictures, no other media, no gps, no pretty front ends, no weather apps, no photo speed dials with the phone apps to come, no messenger, no networking tools. List goes on and on.

In my treo i have a 2 gig card and it works out nicely, the major thing for me is attachments in emails, on my phone i save them to sd card so im sure poutlook is taking a nice chunk of my storage memory.

daniel, what is your memory stats at now?

block title bar just blocks the title bar, in other words the top black bar's certain bit. this is part of snapvue. nothing really interesting. as i said before, best way to remove snapvue is to replace snapvue.dll with one that is modded to show the start menu then get back everything else.

So any ideas RE extended ROM, I'd be happy to try...

i believe shift is like other new phones where it doesnt have ext rom.

Re BlockTitleBar.exe I found that this is what also takes the Fn + Keys to control things like volume/brightness etc. When thinking this was the prog that covered the Start Menu and etc, I replaced it with winrar. When then testing for "open" key presses that may trigger something, I kept getting an application launch (It was winrar I replaced it with) with unknown command line errors.

Replaced the original file (i.e. deleted the winrar renamed to blocktitlebar.exe) and the FN + Keys were working again.

Thanks to Daniel and other guys, i managed to edit the registry as described, execute now CAB Files without problems and also installed Quickmenu. Furthermore SPB Pocket plus, which has it all. And Documents to go, which enables now to read office files and PDFs. And I of course donated to the Shift project.

Thanks to all you guys. Cheers, S

Please, i also followed the info on editing the registry as described, but couldnt execute any .cab files. Did i miss anything, eg space, dot, etc from this (wceload.exe ''%''1 /nodelete)?

no other things to do, just type very exactly as it was posted into the described line, then it should work. Dont forget to reboot then.

Also double check your spelling. The %1 should be between the quotes, and make sure they are proper Double Quotes not two single Quotes

You've written
wceload.exe ''%''1 /nodelete

it should be

wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete

- With regedit addon i go in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\ and under Value Data i have type wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete

Maybe Its only me but doesnt work for me. This is what I do.
1) Stop Snapvue and disable it.
2) Until this point I ve 3g in both sides
2) Reboot snapvue.
3) SnapVue service isnt executed on startup so Internet Share connection probably isnt launched (for me)
3) I cant get 3g on vista side... :(

It works if the service is up the snapvue boots and then is stoped manually but It doesnt work (for me)if the service is disabled to not be executed after reset.---

Cheers, S

Hi sbueschi,
I want to use SPB Pocket Plus as well. After some time now, have you got any problems with it?
On my HTC Vario II I tried to use Quickmenu and Pocket Plus together which didn't work fine. Any problems there? Which one is more useful in Snapvue's case?

Thanks

hehe Yes I can but I reset the device several times per day and I will forget it most of the times. The other problem is that snapvue service replace the current theme after reset. My wish is to set my custom theme and see the start button but I should to stop snapvue service after reset and then set again my theme :(

i use pocket plus since approx 2 years on all my recent WM devices (Artemis, Kaiser and Pharos) and i never had an issue. I must maybe mention that i use a regular version i paid for :-) in Snapvue so far i used Quickmenu, did not install SPB, resp reinstalled it again for storage space reasons. I would not recommend to use both in parallel on the same device anyway since many functions are similar (todayscreen functions etc) and i can imagine this is confusing the system.

Its been a couple of days since i've contributed - i needed to go out and earn some money. looks like you guys are doing loads and getting somewhere.

All has not been quiet in the meantime.

I have 12.23 mb storage free with:
- Office Mobile 6.1
- IE 6.1
- Total Commander (for registry hacking)
AND
- RealVGA 96dpi settings - I have uninstalled the actual software as it has done its job.

Some of you guys (Daniel/rpawley) seem reluctant to disable the snapvue dll. I have had this disabled for three days now - no issues whatsoever and I have perfectly fine 3G access from Vista. Also, my Fn keys all work okay. Because I couldn't work out how to disable it, I just deleted the service from the registry.

A couple of screenshots attached. 96dpi is fantastic. At this res.you can use Excel and Word properly and reading and writing emails is a pleasure. Vista becomes redundant for the most part and so I get to work for a lot longer without access to a power supply.

rpawley, you listed a number of big files, some of which you have deleted. Which ones?

I am going to install a couple of bits of software (acrobat reader) and then hang fire till we can work out how to make use of the sd card. For me, this beautiful device is primarily a business device and so I'm not bothered about music, movies, etc. More about how I am going to finish a proposal, catch up with emails and do a bit of research on a mammoth train/plane journey.

I was using it on the train the other day, sharing a table with a couple of strangers who begged me to demonstrate the machine, which I took pleasure in doing. Believe me , they were suitably impressed (and envious) - one being a laptop toting professional, the other a blackberry user. Both saw the benefit of replacing their device with this.

Although I was engrossed in hacking the WM side during the remainder of the three hour journey, one of my fellow travellers pointed out to me that I was getting a load of envious looks from other passengers that were walking past.

Guys

anyone discovered yet a key combination to hardreset the mobile part?
I bricked it somehow by overwriting webview.dll when i installed
internet explorer and now the mobile part has a frozen surface, meaning
taping and keyboard doesnt work at all. soft reset from vista works but once snapvue is up its frozen, i therefore cant enter anything to access clearstorage. Help much appreciated, S

it won't popup a notification if you send an sms or something? could we talk on msn (icq or yahoo works too)? just PM me with your msn address. the reason i'm asking is your device doesn't have much to lose so we can experiment to see how to hard reset it.

Tito which version of realvga did you install?
I installed a cab I found on athena forum and bricked my device. When wm booted the directory \windows\startup wasnt executed so I couldnt do the tipical trick in these cases. Of course Quickmenu stopped working so I couldnt launch file explorer or other program. Finally I had to return it to the shop and they gave me a new one.....

Yep, that's the one I used. My theory is that the snapvue dll was your problem. I had already disabled mine. Remember that at 96dpi, your title bar is smaller - maybe snapvue got confused and decided to kill your baby.

Keep in mind the memory constraints we have for now. Using big front ends can really eat your storage/program memory. the shift doesnt have as much memory as a phone does.
