thanks, yes, this would really help. see my post (9th post in the linked thread) about my opinion on this ;)
Is there a progress bar showing how close you are to affording a machine?

Ok only 6.6 megs of storage space free:
RealVGA 96dpi
Digital Clock
Resco Explorer
Resco Registry PlugIN
USB Tool
Office 2007 (only excel and word)
Outlook 1 IMAP
Contacts (vol file is 700k)
Pocketweather
Ilauncher (VGA Icons)
IExplorer 6.1
PIE Plus
Quickmenu
CERDisplay
Thats it, Its functional for my trip, unless i get a pdf lol that install cab is like 8 megs though, massive bloatware.
Been using USB Tool exclusively for 2 days, its great can RAdmin into my vista side and copy files to winmo and run CerDisplay to remote into the winmo side. Everything from my desktop.
We really need our experienced users to have a look at a couple files in the windows dir, from what i understand they do not need to be as big as they are 18Megs storage space total for 2 files!!
1. mxip_initdb.vol 16Mb (i read something about replacing it and it goes down to 1 meg or something it was over my head)
2. provision.zip 2.8Mb (As far as im aware its the auto install of the new sim chip, but we can do it manually no?)
provision.zip is for htc's connection setup to setup ur data connections to connect properly to ur network. we all use this on other wm devices so know what it is. im pretty sure u can get rid of its reg and connection setup files and use that space. dont see really where it could affect the device in any way. once ur connection is setup who needs it :p UNLESS u travel and use different sims.

Has anyone tried reducing the size of their mxip_initdb.vol file this way? One thing that you clearly cannot do is to back up Contacts onto the SD card (yet), and I am reluctant to sync with the Vista side (as this is not a back up, and I could end up losing all my Contacts). Personally, all of my Contacts are synced with my Exchange server, so I can get them back that way.
Sniveri posts a link which suggests that a wayward mxip_initdb.vol file is only 1.6MB, TEN times smaller than on the Shift! A reduction would clearly be a huge saving, but has anyone been successful reducing it, yet?

Just an interested outsider watching this all develop and weighing getting a Shift.
Could someone answer some basic questions? Or set up a FAQ page or sumptin' for this kind of Shift-related stuff?
1. I understand that the liberation won't survive a hard reset, so how often does the Shift need to be hard-reset while operating in full-on WM mode? (And roughly how long do you think it takes to completely "recover" from a hard-reset?)
2. How much RAM does the WM side operate with? 64Meg? 128? The entire RAM that's available to the Vista side?
3. Are apps that are installed in WM mode installed to the hard drive or into RAM? IOW, will installed WM apps survive a hard-reset? (Could traditional backup programs like Sprite or Spb be used to restore the previous registry?)
4. Any idea what kind of battery life you might get just operating in WM mode alone?
finally
5. In your opinion is the conversion yet to a point that the Shift can function as a WM replacement device? (i.e. Can you use it as reliably as any other WM device for work or play?) If not, do you think it'll get there?
Sorry if these questions have been asked before; thanks.

2.: it uses its own ram, 64MB
3.: neither, they are installed into nand flash. a hard reset by definition means clear the storage so no. but if you just mean removing the battery, then yes apps survive the reset, that's not a hard reset.
4.: it seems it's quite good.
5.: not yet but it will be achieved soon.

Thanks for that. Shame that the memory is stuck at 64... that's sooo WM2003. I assume NAND and RAM are seperate? Would hope so.
It's amazing to watch you guys suss this out. I agree with the other posters here; why did they go to so much trouble to cripple WM when it's obvious that there are so many users who really want the mobile functionality.

the answer to the above is "Don't Know", but I could guess it has to do with the release of Exchange 2007 and the push by Intel and MS to create greater usage with Exchange and Intel "integrated" solutions. After all, one of the very first press releases for the Shift had the CEO of HTC and one of the lead directors of Intel on stage together to talk about their "partnership". Not that I am paranoid, I am just sceptical. After all, WM allows from individual usage, while SnapVue forces an Exchange requirement and ensures you are relient on VISTA (currently the only OS running for this) to use the full capability of the box. It also is trying to expand the UMPC/PPC market into the corporate world where "big money" can be made with some significant tax breaks to boot - no matter what country you are in.
OK maybe I am a little paranoid.
Final point - I may not be a computer wiz (at least not for a long time), but watching everyone here crack the WM issue is amazing. Well done. Once I get the Paypal bugs fixed (I am currently stuck on a modem line due to circumstances), my donation will be coming to this cause.
Cheers and beers all!

why are you talking about WM2003? 128MB only recently started to be more common, since the athena and kaiser.
do you know what RAM and NAND are? how would they be the same? :O
and yeah, god knows why HTC chose to do this! :D

I have started the process with them anyway, cos I really want to contrbute to the good work you guys have done. you have enlightened me immensely, and I'm grateful. Hopefully, as soon as paypal verifies my details my contri should roll in. Many thanks.

Hi CMonex,
thanks for the good work!. I would like to experiment a bit with my htc shift's GPS. Would you be so kind as to send me the GPS libraries? GPSTool alone does not work..
my address is spamcatch at hccnet dot nl
