View Full Version : Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift

Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?

nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?

well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:
hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again
This is the only thing holding me back from ordering one myself!

snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.

Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.

Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!

Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.

I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.

If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.

OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....
Excellent. I have sent myself the executable of PHM.lu's regedit, saved it into my documents, and am now able to access and edit the registry!

Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...

Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

You can download Schaps Registry Editor from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347178
Unpack it on your machine using something like winrar.
Rename the REGIST~1.001 file to RegistryEditor.exe and email that to yourself. It will not need installing as a cab that way.

Install PIE 6.1 by following the instructions in this thread and it seems to work ok!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365164&page=3
The CAB file didn't do anything for me at all, despite the fact that I've "enabled" them in the registry - I do get the CAB icon for it, so I guess that it's a problem with that particular CAB file.
EDIT: I should say that I didn't copy the files into WINDOWS - I just dumped them into "My Documents\Business" and ran them from there.

Just tried it here and I've had no joy. To be honest, I rather suspect that the hardware isn't physically connected to the SnapVue/WM6 side of the device and it's most likely that it will never be possible to access it unless Vista is running - which would defeat the object totally IMHO, since I want to run WM6 to save battery life.
On the plus side though, I've just managed to install full Opera Mobile on it and it is working fine - looks like I shall have to buy a licence for it! I also managed to get the Citrix client working fine, which means that the only thing I can't now do on the device that I wanted to do is watch DivX under WM6, since there just isn't enough storage space available to hold any reasonably sized DivX files (without the SD card being available anyway).

Dave

Ok, got snapvue back...all is well. I sort of don't remember the combination of what I pressed, but it involved holding down the right mouse click button, clicking on the 3G connection icon up top, and then pressing settings. Ok, got snapvue back...all is well. I sort of don't remember the combination of what I pressed, but it involved holding down the right mouse click button, clicking on the 3G connection icon up top, and then pressing settings. Nice :)
Other big discover. I was on vista side and often 3G connection was on and off with the tray icon on and with red cross. Then I opened windows mobile cencer (on vista side) and It was connectingĦĦĦĦ. Then I opened file explorer and I was seeing the windows mobile sideĦĦ. Then again, sound similiar to unplug usb device and It dissapèared and 3g connection was on again.
Its nice to know that we can control snap vue side from vista but I want to control it because I cant use 3g from vista (each 10 seconds switch from windows mobile connected to 3g connected)...any idea?. I dont know what I did.....

Open on vista side internet sharing (\windows\IntSHRIU.lnk). Status should be connected. Ok, you can surf on vista side. Now go to mobile side and click on disconnect on internet sharing side. Then on vista side you will listen usb tipical sound. Open windows mobile center and should be connecting and finally connected and you can manage windows mobile file system from vista side....Continue testing....

Also can you note things like software installed on both sides(if relevant) and SIM in or not etc..

Step by step.
1) On vista side. Its 3g connected. Mobile center opened. IN settings "Allow usb connections" checked and "Allow connections from bluetooth" selected. Second combo set to "automatic". Rest of the checks and checked.
2) Swich to snapvue and execute \windows\IntShrUI.lnk, If status is not connected then press "Connect" left soft key.
3) Ensure vista side continues connected to internet (tray icon connected).
4) On windows mobile side press "disconnect" left soft key button of Internet sharing dialog.
5) Switch to vista side. Windows Mobile center should be connecting.....
And thats all. Now you can manage the windows mobile file system from vista. I ve repeated it several times. This morning I ve upgraded to SP1 but I dont think its related, isnt it?

Even I ve installed soti pocket contoller and I can control "remotelly" windows mobile side from vista side. These pictures have been take from vista side using pocket controller capture tool, controlling windows mobile side using pocket controller....

Steps to try and recover SnapVue
Firstly try to Remove the battery and restart the handset.
If this fails please go into Snap View Mode and try to Tap in the bottom right hand corner of the Screen were the Settings button is meant to be located. If the Menu pops up please click on Clear Storage and follow the prompts.
There is a Hard Disk Recovery Method the process is directly out of the manual below.
5.2 Hard Disk Recovery
In case of system failure, Windows Vista® can be recovered to the hard disk by running the hard disk recovery utility. Before starting this utility, make sure to back up important data and files.
To run the hard disk recovery utility
1.
Shut down the Mobile Computer and then power it on again.
2.
At the start of the boot-up process, immediately press F3 to run the hard disk recovery utility.
3.
You will then see the following screen:
Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N)104 Securing and Managing the Mobile Computer
Press N to continue with the hard disk recovery process. If you press Y, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.
4.
The next message prompts you whether or not to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data:
Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N) NDo you want to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data? (Y/N)
If, aside from drive C, you have created other partitions in the hard disk and you want to keep them, press N. If you press Y, your partitions will be deleted.
5.
A confirmation message then prompts you whether or not to continue. Press Y to start the hard disk recovery process. If you press N, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.
6.
After the recovery process is complete, slide and hold the POWER/HOLD switch for about four seconds to shut down the Mobile Computer.

I am now running the hard disk recovery, I have asked HTC Australia to pursue the button combination hard-reset for the windows mobile side. I told them i knew like 10 people in the same boat as me.
my box is now running recovery and making partitions and running a program called ImageX, that was initiated by the command x:\windows\system32\cmd.exe -startnet.cmd (it took about 15 mins)
Well the command he gave only recovers the Vista partition back to factory defaults. It does nothing to Winmo. I have made him aware of this and pleaded for the hard-reset command.

Hey boy,
Did you get yours back? snapvue that is.
You can hard reset using \windows\ClearStorage.exe, if needed....
if we can get mobile explorer running we could execute this file and hard reset, according to daniel.
UPDATE:
According to HTC the Reset SnapVUE button in Vista executes teh ClearStorage.exe Command. So this is not the hard reset we were hoping for. Ive hit that option about 20x and still the same results.

rpawly,
I'm not sure if you have tried this, I havent quite read all the posts (sorry) but I had a similar problem when I first got into the file explorer. i.e launched theme changer and disabled SnapVUE.
Whenever I sent emails, they did not appear as notifications.
So i sent a text message to my SIM. Lo and behold a notifcation.
I selected reply and cancelled the message.
This then gave me access to the outlook email tool and the browser functionality that has become our saviour :-)
From here, I copied the whole Windows folder to My Docs. It errored, however, inside was one of the theme files.
I then copied separately the Startup folder to My Docs.
So to save on data usage, I created a new email included the theme file. Cancelled the send and receive, then moved file from drafts to inbox. This let me open the mail and "save as" to which I selected the My Docs\Startup folder.
Then using the browser functionality I copied and pasted the startup folder from My docs to Windows.
Yanked the battery out (hadnt been running Vista at this point :-)) and when powered back on, the startup process launched the theme manager and Today page settings.
Enabled SnapVUE and havent disabled again (although will resolve this once I get quickmenu installed etc)
Hope this helps...

11-03-2008, 10:54 AM
one thing that would be really useful. i don't have a shift still, so can't try myself, but the question is, how to enter bootloader mode.
you need to find the key combination or if you have debugtools from a beta release shift (i will post that stuff, if it isn't posted yet), you can easily establish a virtual usb connection to vista. you can then use RUU or just plain activesync stuff.
with that, maybe enterbootloader.exe would work.
as for hard reset, the SPL version i got here does not have the hard reset key combination, it is simply a commented out function. but it can of course do a hard reset after it finishes flashing an image or if something has set the clearstorage config flag in nand.
before you ask... yes you can also hard reset from mtty using task 28. but again you must enter bootloader mode for that.
as for usual SPL capabilities... it has lots of MFG commands... hardspl might be based on this SPL if we don't find a better one. nice news: it is very clear it handles SD (yes you can load image from SD too).
BTW about the lack of key combo to hard reset, this SPL is old (not even version 1.0) and i haven't fully disassembled it yet anyway. so let's hope.
but again, if you can enter bootloader mode, and get vista to see the shift from mtty - you're in business. i will upload a mtty for shift vista soon.

BRILLIANT!!!!!
It didn't quite work for me but this did:
- From messaging (I was lucky, I left the Windows live theme add-in there), I did the copy/paste of Windows\Startup directory to My Docs, using New Mail Message, Insert Picture, ctrl-c, ctrl-v.
- I then emailed myself a 3rd party file explorer program (.exe file) from Vista
- In snapvue saved this to My Docs\Startup
- In snapvue, create a new email and copy the My Docs\Startup back to Windows
- In Vista, Reset SnapVue
- One Snapvue has restarted, the file explorer is displayed on the screen. Navigate to the Windows directory and run any .THM file
- Put Snapvue back and press ok
- Run clear storage - obviously this is optional but, for me given the amount of rubbish I've tried to save to get SnapVue back, it seemed like a good idea.
Obviously, you are going to need a SIM card with data plan to do this.

I know how to modify sounds/notifications. (Why HTC set "no sound" for incoming mail???")
Just rename attached file to sounds.lnk (upload tool didnt let me upload lnk file), copy it to snapvue part (or email to you) and click on it. Now you can change the events....
I ve added too interesting links to other applets. For example Today theme changer, remove programs, etc

i've read all posts in this thread, but saw your solution doesn't work for some people, the usbtool in debugtools is explicitly intended for this purpose so maybe it'll work for everyone.
btw, if the shift has two keys to emulate softkey presses in WM (i don't remember right now, i only saw the shift for 5 mins so far :( ), then try pressing both while booting WM, that's the hard reset key combo for shift SPLs that have it compiled in - the one i was checking out in disassembler doesn't.

6) WARNING(DONT DO THIS STEP. ONLY TO TEST PRETTY START BUTTON).Run it, go to "Services" tab. Select "SnapVue(SVT0:0)" item and then select "Disable". Restart device......
Its not a good idea to stop this sevice because you can lose 3g contectivity from vista and maybe other needed thigs. You will have to live with a black "Start Button"....

Once you install it(in my installation I had to copy one exe and two dll files to \windows directory. Maybe you have a new installer. I only had a zip with those 3 files) you ve to execute once. Then It will be loaded every time the system boots. But you wont see a "Start Button". Simply tap on the place where It should be (hidden by Mobile operator name) and It will appear.... Last picture I uploaded with pretty start button was taken with the SnapVUE service stopped but I think Its a vital service so Its better to let it run...

BTW, just tested with the disabled SVT service, and you can still get full access in regards to File System of Windows Mobile. But as mentioned before, this may have further repercussions such as 3G etc. Not sure if it is a necessary step, havent got chance to try reverting, but after SVT is disabled and you have your nice original start menu back, but do not have the standard "Control Panel" when in Start\Settings then move the Settings folder out from Windows and into my docs or something. Then original Control Panel is visible.
As I said, it may already be visible through Start, but I have played so much with this now, I can't remember what I've done. Me thinks I'll be trying a ClearStorage and start afresh....
BTW from Control Panel\Bluetooth it says that there is not BT hardware installed. Even when enabled in Vista side, so we may have a physical disconnection there. But I'm stating this Matter of Factly. Its just initial investigation....

BTW from Control Panel\Bluetooth it says that there is not BT hardware installed. Even when enabled in Vista side, so we may have a physical disconnection there. But I'm stating this Matter of Factly. Its just initial investigation....
Maybe it's missing the drivers for bluetooth (and WiFi offcourse)

Actually running the clearstorage from the Windows Mobile side did cause a full reset for me. It totally reset the device.
The reset device icon from Vista is just a reboot. Without this the only "SnapVUE native" way to reset WM was to pull the battery out.
That was my understanding. As I said, a clearstorage, did help me return to factory defaults for SnapVue first time.

who cares about the incompetent support... this is not the first time they have no idea about anything.
i posted one sure way of hard resetting (task 28), and if the shift does indeed have two keys for emulating softkeys in WM, then those keys are the key combo (to be pressed during boot) to hard reset unless you have an SPL (SPL = bootloader) version that has this function commented out.
Is this not correct then? Clearstorage.exe = hard reset?
yes, clearstorage is equivalent to a hard reset. however we have to find a way to hard reset even without a bootable WM OS. that's either a direct key combination to hard reset or another to enter bootloader and then telling it to hard reset.
also, i wouldn't be surprised if vista had a way to do it too.

Dani
Even I ve installed soti pocket contoller and I can control "remotelly" windows mobile side from vista side. These pictures have been take from vista side using pocket controller capture tool, controlling windows mobile side using pocket controller....
Daniel and all,
I have followed your steps and was able to connect to the winmo side of the device, i can see Pocket PC in explorer and manipulate files.
And it does shut down the 3g to vista side.
Confirmed
Interesting note: While connected via activesync, i enabled wifi and it lost its connect to the winmo side. It looks like when you enable wifi on vista it disables access to the 3g modem.
I was able to install soti pocket controller as daniel was.

1) Install quickmenu to ensure you can use Start button.
2) Ensure and reensure you can use use it.
3) Send to you today.lnk posted before to open Theme manager. Uncheck snapvue theme and snapvue item.
4) Restart device (QuickMenu has a handy option to reboot device).
5) Copy TaskMgr.exe (link is in this forum...dont remember where) using email system.
You will have to live with a black "Start Button"....
pd. Its a good idea to put a link to quickmenu in \windows\startup to ensure its execution...

First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
I can also connect to WM file system through WM device manager on Vista side.
There are few questions need to be answered.
1. How to install the *.cab file on WM side? I always get an error saying about the certificate.
2. How to install quickmenu on WM side?
3. If I uncheck the Snapvue from the items to be shown on today, what will happen?
Thanks in advance!

I can definitely verify that the shift executes /windows/startup, in my whole process i was adding things to it and they were popping up on startup. It is suppose to use that dir 100%

Do you have regeditor on it?
Maybe you can force there to execute something?
Did you try to delete the exe of realvga?
Does anybody know if the installed programs exe is working of even on the device? Then Danielherrero can try to delete the program.

Isn't there a way to startup a program from the register?
Then you can start the cleanstorage program.

Was the original language Spanish of did you switch from english to Spanish?
EDIT:
It's professional, not a smartphone so you can't switch...
Which realvga did you try?
I saw this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327830
there is stated that you can only use it on english OS versions..

Hey Daniel,
Did you perhaps try creating a new folder with startup contents and name this \windows\startup. In case something has altered the registry to look for the name \windows\startup.
A real stab in the dark, sorry :-)

if thats true then it would surely be looking for /windows/startup not the spanish version.

This is installed with the realvga_11.cab
You can see there is nothing in the registery.
Please search your device where the things are locatied.
It's makeing a realvga.exe Maybe in a folder "ce2" or something?
And of course a shortcut. Maybe it made an enlish folder "startup" or something?

That doesnt mean that on its first attempted launch, that Realvga.exe didnt create (or modify) registry settings. If you binary edit the realvga.exe, you may see some reference to registry details, I noted quickly that there are CLSID entries in there which are from the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry structure.
But still blindly stabbing my stylus in the dark, sorry.....
