So one of my friends just got a Tilt 3 days ago. This morning his dog used it as a chew toy. It works but the plastic are jacked up. Anyone know how to get it fixed for cheap or know anyone with a bricked phone forsale?

I haven't ordered anything from them personally, but they seem like they do alot of business. Tell your friend good luck.

Wow. $9.99 for the good-looking HTC keyboard instead of the fugly AT&T version we Tilt owners got stuck with. Too bad I don't have the nerve to dismantle my phone to make the swap.

Whats the difference? Is the original kaiser keyboard easier to type with ? different material ?

You should take your phone in to ATT and tell them it keeps dropping (calls). I'll bet they give you a new one.

Because if it doesn't fit or work properly (someone has claimed this to be a problem from them) it will be hard to return the item.

Oh my! If nothing else works, daydeal.com has great plastic cases for the tilt that snap on. Keyboard access works, complete access to holes, close, perfect fit, no bulk.

There has to be enough phone case to fit to though...

I think as long as you are buying OE parts, and not aftermarket you'll be fine.

AT&T will probably just repackage it and sell it as a refurb.

But yeah... did the dog get put down or be left to play with an electric heater or something?

He might want to have his SIM card profile checked for missing updates. His phone should be reading "AT&T" in the upper left hand of the screen and not "Cingular."

I thought the phone read the operator from the cell tower.

Order the parts from China. Fix the phone.
It will look a lot better with a new shell than it does now, get over your fear of China.

EDIT: They only have Tytn II shells, no Tilts, doesn't really matter now does it?

Yeah, but ATT/Cingular devices are setup to override that and show every network as ATT/Cingular. There is a setting in the phone to read the network name from the phone, or from the SIM, by default ATT phones read the network name from the SIM, and all of their SIM cards are programmed to show all networks as either ATT or Cingular for the older ones. Its not a big deal though, its just the network name. My unhacked phones all read AT&T, most of my hacked phones all read Cingular.

the completion of the "cingular" to "at&t" ended months ago. his phone should have been be reading "at&t" for a while. since it is not, it's almost a given that he does not have an updated sim profile. while it may not be a problem now, in time, it will be.

I haven't seen Cingular on a phone in months and I work with them every day.

Where I do agree with you about 'SIM profile', the Network operator info is actually held in ROM.

Each Network operator gives out a unique 'ID' prefix and your phone takes that prefix and matches it to an ASCII value to display on the screen.

Many 'Cooked' ROM's use selected bits of older ROM's and pre-production sections that do not contain the updated Network ID reference, thereby they display old Carrier names.

If your local operator has changed recently, just get an old phone out of your dusty drawer and insert your SIM card and it will display the old operators name still!! :)

Believe it or not, I have had FIVE replacement Tilts. All of them had worse problems than the dropped calls, so I kept this one :(
One wouldn't stay on, one the microphone didn't work AT ALL, etc...
Maybe one of these days I'll try for another replacement to see if I can get one that keeps signal, but it's a real hassle to have to spend an hour or two on the phone each time I call AT&T, lol.

Soz, but looking at it logically? Have you ever thought that you local cell network may be at fault?

I mean, just saying its STILL the phone after FIVE seems to be pushing it??? :o

Well, here's the thing. I used to have a Treo 750, always had perfect reception even in my home. Besides the Tilt I also have a Razr V3xx, when it has 4 bars, my Tilt has 2 (same location, same carrier, both 3G). Also, the other Tilt's I received did seem to at least not drop signal entirely. I think you misunderstood my first post. All 5 did not drop signal, they had a variety of problems. The other phones had severe problems which kept me from keeping them. The LEAST horrible of the problems was the dropped signal, so I ended up keeping this one. I mean, for example, if I have to choose between a phone which drops signal, or one where the microphone is completely inoperational, I had to choose the one which drops signal.
I have also tested the phone with several different SIM cards, still drops signal.
Don't misunderstand me, I don't care if the phone shows one bar or 5, as long as it works, it's just when it loses signal entirely (usually lasts between 1 minute to 5 minutes to regain signal) that it becomes a real problem.
So, based on this, I HAVE to think it's not the signal.

Hey, is the HTC service manual up for the Kaiser yet? I've replaced housings on 8125's and 8525's and found them to be easy to take apart and put back together- I don't expect the Tilt to be any different but it's always good to have a service manual to work from.

My Tilt has been excellent in the RF department. With my old iPAQ I used to keep a Motorola V551 in the console of my truck for when I was in rural areas and the iPAQ didn't work. I'd switch my SIM card so I could make a call. Since I've bought the Tilt I have not used the phone in the console even once. It even worked in a couple of really rural areas where even the trusty V551 doesn't work.

I'm using a Cingy SIM as well, but the update was sent to my card sometime last November, probably when I upgraded. Since then my Tilt, and my unhacked phones have read AT&T.

Just a little follow up on this thread. The instructions linked above don't show how to take the screen apart (but wasn't a big deal). I took the chew toy apart, put it back together and now it looks like a Kaiser. The parts fit great and I only had to make a couple of very small changes to make it all work. Thanks for the info all!
