View Full Version : Random Spots Developing on TITANS / 6800's

I have the XV6800 and noticed that this phone over times developes some screen spots. I have one so far, and on my previous one that I returned (for other reasons) developed one also.
I read a thread on another website that Moguls / Titans develop it too.
Has any one else Developed this? If so is it fixable or is it something that might cause like sometype of recall and issue a fix where we might get phone replacements later on?

i have a light spot about the size a pea in the screens lower left-hand quadrant. It's noticeable it during the verizon boot-up screen with the white background, in word, etc. anything with a white background. Not noticeable if the screen is colored.
I've wondered if this was normal.

Yes, mine is in the exact same place. I read on another website that it might be an HTC issue because other TITAN's have gotten these spots also.
At first I thought that a picture image was burnt into my screen or that I might have pressed the screen to heavily and damaged it.
This has happened twice. I wonder if there is a fix because this is very annoying especialy when trying to read or watching a video.

I have a pc6800 through Alltel and just noticed the same problem three days ago...has anyone spoken with their SP and found out if they are replacing them? I am afraid to take mine in since my all High and mighty Moister sticker now says void even though my phone hasn't been with in 100 feet of water. I find those stickers to be such BS...but that could just be me...I wish I could find some where to buy spare ones..:mad::mad:
I am not entirely certain but I think the void sticker that is displayed by the battery is for the screw. I mean if you try to unscrew your phone to fiddle with the insides then that voids your warranty. I could be wrong.
The only concern would be that if we where to return the phone to get a replacement one, that we would have to flash our RADIOS and ROMS to stock if any one has flashed them to anything that is not stock.

The stickers on both of my alltel 6800's said void out of the box. Their explaination for this is the when the sticker get wet the words bleed and turn the entire sticker purple. Not sure how accurate the rep was but that is the story for what it is worth.

Yeah, mine's got a spot the size of a small pea in the bottom left-hand corner. Doesn't bother me too much yet though, I've got the insurance so I'll go get it replaced one of these days. For others that have tried to get them replaced, any troubles?

After doing some research on forums I noticed that many people have this problem.
Some say that it might be an issue with the phone heating up, faulty LCD manufacturing, the excess use of the vibration feature and so on......
But It seems that no matter what you ( such as gettting a replacement) your current or new phone might still get these spots.
It seems that not many carriers know about this issue, not even HTC.
So the problem might consist unless it is made known to them so they can create a fix for the new shipment of phones. Or else this will reoccur on the phones they have shipped out already.
It sucks because most of us paid a large amount of money for these devices to have it be faulty( not something that can be fixed via software at this moment). Just my opinion.

Ditto, same spot here. was wondering about the spot for a while. I have dropped mine a million times and thought it was because of that.
would be nice to be able to change it in because of the spot because mine is beat down to the ground like 4 flat tires.
will they give me crap because of how beat up it is?

I know every time I go to Alltel and get a phone replaced via the insurance the first question they ask the Rep at the store is if the phone looks like it has been dropped or if it has water damage....I'm sure that is so they can blame it on the user. As far as the phone being under manufacturer warranty they usually just swap it out for me no questions asked. I just always hate when they open the box infront of me and give nothing but the phone....would be nice to have an extra case and charger...LOL..

I've been through three Sprint-branded titans because of this. I'm 100% sure it's a design flaw. If we all complain at once, HTC might actually listen and make a titan that doesn't do this!

This is a shame that only 10% of people voting don't have this problem. This may be due to the fact that only a few people would click this link if they don't have spots. Still worrisome though.
All seem to be lower left quadrant size of a pea (hidden camera for DCD to watch us?)

my original had a nice bright spot on the screen, took it back and got it replaced under my warranty no problem...
didin't effect the functionality of the phone, but it really really bugged me...it's like having stuck or dead pixels...not what you paid for and really annoying

I had my Mogul for about a month now and I have noticed this spot couple of weeks ago. I wander if it has anything with enabling GPS hardware which in turn causes some component to heat up and damage the screen.....

I don't think so. My mogul is less than 2 weeks old, running the stock rom with no mods/hacks/registry tweaks. It has a lower left corner spot.
Pretty disappointing.

Lower left of the screen on my unit. Seems like a common area for everyone to get this "hot spot".

If you look closely in the 2nd pic, you can see the 3 dots in the bottom left corner.

I went into a couple of Verizon and Sprint Stores to check out the XV6800's and the Mogul's and even some of their display phones have this spot.
I asked them why the phone had a spot and they were surprised to see it. They didnt have a concrete answer to why the spots developed.
My guess is that Verizon and Sprint will continue to sell phones that develop these spots until some one notifies HTC about this design flaw and gets it fixed for future productions to come.

I had a fujitsu laptop that did exactly the same thing on the screen - right in the middle where on the outside of the lid was the logo. It was acknowledged as a design mistake and subsequent models had a new external logo that didn't apply pressure to the lcd display from behind.
I would say that this is precisely the same thing. There is a piece of hardware right behind the screen that is squeezing the liquid crystals ever so slightly to create the spot.
You can emulate the same thing by pushing the back of most thin laptop displays.
Once HTC learns about the issue (assuming they don't already) you will no doubt see a new build of the titan come out. (Or perhaps a new model altogether).
We should all bug our carriers about it (i.e replacement phones) and then they will bug HTC soon enough.

Lower left corner here. Easiest to see when rebooting. I've been pondering whether or not to take it back for a new one.

I've got one at the lower left, I had assumeed it was something I had done because my brothers Titan had not yet developed the spot. Being on SERO with no insurance, I don't know how easy it would be to have the phone replaced so I haven't done it yet.

Same thing here; pea sized, bottom left.
I'd like to hear from everyone that has replaced there unit to see if the problem has reappeared. I don't want to mess around with reconfiguring my device if I'm going to have the same (or worse) problem again two weeks after it's replaced.

I was in the same boat as you - SERO with no insurance. I contacted sprint through ecare and they're sending me a brand new replacement free of charge. All I did was tell them what was going on with the spots, that it is a widespread issue, and I asked what Sprint would/could do about it. They immediately offered a replacement for free. I would imagine you'll have no problem getting a replacement.

Mine has one spot in the lower left corner about 1 cm up and 6 mm in. It's brightest area is 2 mm across but has sort of a gradient to it that makes it 8mm overall. Here I thought I just got unlucky to have a new phone with a dinked up screen...:P

To be honest, I did not notice it until I read this thread. But I too have a little spot in the lower left area of the screen. Not really the corner, but close enough. I had to turn off the 6800 to see it when it booted up.
Now what to do... My sticker also says void.. (I never knew it was there because I never had taken the back off). I have never dropped it nor had it out in the ran unless on my hip in the case or my pocket.
I do have insurance and I got it Jan 12th.
If it's going to come back and for now it's not something I really see then don't replace... But if it's going to get worse over time.. Maybe I should....

Damn. You're lucky. I went to the sprint store today and they said they could not replace my phone because it is cosmetic damage. HORRIBLE, because I waited for 1.5 hours, and when I went to ask the guy what is the status on my phone, he replied, "oh, I thought they gave it back to you already. It's been finished a long time ago." Apparently, they just looked at spots and that was it. I should have been on my way in no time.
Then, I came home and read your msg. I tried to contact ecare to no avail. They told me I have to contact the manufacturer, or go through insurance since I have insurance. DAMN IT!

Wow - that sure is a shame. I figured I lucked out but hoped that my experience could be of help to someone. The weird thing is though, that when I called to check on the status of getting the new phone shipped (sprint screwed up and didn't place the order when the said they did), the CSR kept mentioning something about the overcurrent problem or something of that nature. It sounded like it was a widely known issue to Sprint (or at least in that call center). Even though Sprint wont take care of it for you, hopefully HTC will. Good luck.

I have this same spot too. I think this thread should be stickied. T^his is a very serious thing. I too noticed mine about 2 weeks ago but had assumed it was a screen burn; I just couldn't figured what could have caused. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have insurance but I won't be seeking a replacement. It's not something I notice that much.

The 6800 is EOL (end of life), so I doubt HTC would recall it at this point, especially since this problem has been known for over a year.

mine is on the bottom left. i sent it in for replacement and got a worse refurb phone with a bigger spot. the repair guy says it is a hardware issue where some connectors in the screen arnt making contact in spots

My first phone had an issue with the wifi, so I did a warrnaty return, the refurb that I got from verizon had a spot, used that as an excuse to return that phone.
Verizon tried to blame me from poking the screen to hard, and tried to charge me $50 for another refurb phone. I told them that it was bull, and that I bought a new phone not a damaged refurb.
