Hi all.
So, yeah, I'm new here...been lurking around the last several days, reading and reading, and reading some more, trying to make sense of a few things, before making a post that would end up getting a lot of replies of "RTF FAQ", or "Search", etc...

I've recently inherited a T-Mobile Wing (and 2Gig microSD) from my better half, who just couldn't stand the device, and went back to her old Motorola V3. Admittedly, I wasn't all that impressed with it either, so naturally my first thought is "Well, before I just file it away to collect dust, can I make it better?"

And so, I found my way here. :)

Now, like I said, I've been reading and playing around with stuff for a few days, so this post isn't so much a "How Do I Do This?" post, but more of a "What Do I Pick To Do This?"

Like a lot of people, I want my Windows Mobile install to be much like my home PC install: as clean and barebones as possible, while still doing the things it needs and the things I want...

Right now, I'm guessing that I need to go with one of the itje Touch-IT roms, but still not quite sure exactly which one... Heh.

I'm hoping I can just throw out an idea of what I want my phone to do, and perhaps a few of you can make your recommendations as to what exactly I need...

STANDARD PHONE FEATURES: Obviously, the regular phone should work like it's supposed to, including text messaging. All forms of Instant Messaging (Yahoo, Windows Live, etc) should be entirely unnecessary, but maybe as an optional addon cab...

CONNECTIVITY FEATURES: Aside from the regular phone (duh)...Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS, and ActiveSync should be all that is necessary. If storage memory/active memory can be saved by removing any unnecessary drivers or software for the unused connection types, then I'd like to do so.

INTERNET RELATED FEATURES: I would like as much browsing capacity on this thing as I can get, within reason. Is there a better browser for this phone, or am I stuck with IE? Essentially, I want Google Maps on this thing (in lieu of TomTom, I suppose...lol), and maybe the ability to cruise YouTube... Probably also Gmail (Outlook or other "regular" email programs are probably unecessary, unless they can do the job better...meaning faster and probably less memory consumption).

MULTIMEDIA FEATURES: Yes, I still want it to play MP3s and videos and such. Radio would be a nice touch, but optional.

MISC PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES: Yes I still want the standard stuff (calculator, calendar, scheduler, etc), but at the moment, I have no need for things like Office. And no pre-installed games.

CAMERA FEATURES: For the sake of utilizing the hardware, yes, I'd like to have normal camera and video operation...but still have the option to remove it if I had to.

MISC STUFF:
Weather: I would like to be able to tap one button on my Today screen and get the Current weather info ONLY. Maybe with the option of bringing up a new screen with future forcasts.
MyFaves: I would like to be able to tap one button on my Today screen and have it show or hide my MyFaves.
Slide2Unlock: Yes, I want it. Loving anything that reminds me of that shiny iPhone. lol

PLANNING TO USE:
I'm already definitely planning to install and use PocketCBZ (comic book reader), and a couple old console emulators (SNES, GBA), in case anyone needed to consider memory usage with those in mind.
I may or may not want some kind of PDF reader on there also...haven't formally decided yet.

...

Okay. I can't immediately think of anything else right now, too tired...

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction...because right now I'm getting pretty lost trying to decide exactly which mods I need, and which I don't... :-/

Oh, and semi-random: What exactly is the Cube? Obviously it's optional on some roms, and standard on others...but really, what the heck is it, and should I want it? Or even care?

ITJE's Touch-IT roms are great... as well as ASERG's rom. I would reccommend them both.

you can go to Palringo.com and install their instant messaging client which supports all the major ones... it requires a data connection.

you will have bluetooth, wifi, gprs, activesync with both roms without any problems.

Opera Mobile and Opera Mini are the best options out there.

Gmail has a java application you can install from their site which will function similiar to the gmail site.
You can also setup your Gmail account to work through POP or IMAP through the Pocket Outlook.

You can install google maps from the google site as well.

MULTIMEDIA FEATURES: Yes, I still want it to play MP3s and videos and such. Radio would be a nice touch, but optional.

HTC Audio manager functions similiar to an IPOD ... you can also use TCMP , Coreplayer, and any other media players.

There's no FM radio, but with a data connection, you can have access to internet radio, xm or sirius.

MISC PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES: Yes I still want the standard stuff (calculator, calendar, scheduler, etc), but at the moment, I have no need for things like Office. And no pre-installed games.

calculator, calendar come installed basic.... office comes on most roms... but most chefs offer "lite" versions of their roms.

CAMERA FEATURES: For the sake of utilizing the hardware, yes, I'd like to have normal camera and video operation...but still have the option to remove it if I had to.

Comes included.

there are various weather programs out there, including the weather function that comes in HTC HOME plugin which most chefs include in their roms. Personally, I use SPB weather.

None of the Roms include myfaves, but I made a cab for installing myfaves that's available on this forum if you search for it.

You can use Ultimate Launcher or SPB mobile shell 2 to flip through today plugins. Search for that and see an example of it.

You can install S2U2, just search for it.

Some Roms include adobe pdf.

There are plenty of emulators available ... you can find them all over the place. You can install them onto the memory card, and shouldn't have any problems.

I have never heard of PocketCBZ

The cube is simply an interface, you can flip with your thumb.

I hope that answers your questions.
