View Full Version : Keeping data connections "always on" still necessary on 3G?

Hi folks,

is keeping data connections like GPRS "always on" still necessary on UMTS/HSDPA? I think yes. The reason is that T-Mobile Germany is rounding up every connection to 100k blocks which is a waste (and expensive) if you use Direct Push.

Does anyone know the reg key? Is it still the good old from the GPRS age? "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A3 8-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\(GPRS connection name)\AlwaysOn". ..." or something like that?
I have set this key but can not yet say if it works as I bought my device 2 days ago and can not reliably measure my data volume.

Thanks,
Derek.

PS: data plans in Germany suck....

If you don't mind investing a few euros I would advice you to buy the SPB Gprs Monitor.

The program keeps the data connection activated. The only thing I can tell you is, that there is an "AlwaysOn" in your specified direction. Do you have a "3G" symbol or a "H" above your signal strength indicator? Everytime when I disconnect the data connection it disappears and I get the normal antenna-Symbol. When I reactivate the connection the antenna vanishes and I get a 3G instead. (I have a Orbit 2, so it might be different, but I don't think so.)

PS: data plans in Germany suck....

I'm satisfied. I got my 30mb/month for free and that's more than I need. But I use it only for things like checking soccer results or so.

Yes, I have the monitor installed. It is delivered on CD with the Orbit2 from O2 (didn't know that it keeps the connection alive). Seems that connection is always there as the small E/H is there all the time.

Your English is not bad at all :)

Thanks,
Derek.
