First, I really have done extensive searching and can't seem to find the answer:
I have ATT Tilt with new ROM (1.62). Is there any Java update/midlet that will allow the Gmail app to be downloaded and work on my device? As it stands now, it won't even download from the Gmail site.
Thanks in advance.

I would recomend esmertec java.
You can find it out there, it is not free ware, but since your phone probably came with it like my tilt from att, so licenseing shouldn't be an issue.
Threre are wonderful people out there that have taken apart roms and have all applications that came on the stock rom.
look here and good hunting.

I think I have read every thread in this forum having to do with trying to get the Gmail Java app to work. There are folks that say "Gmail works for me", but do not give any details as to their device, version, or other particulars. I have yet to run across a thread that succinctly explains how to get the Kaiser/Tilt to properly use the Gmail Java app. This is surprising to me because I am utterly impressed by many of the people on this forum and what they do. Much of it is beyond me, but I do enjoy the forum very much and have learned quite a bit from it.
Gmail being as popular as it is, I would have believed that one of our "geniuses" would have sorted it out by now.
Maybe soon???

Last time I checked, GMail is not working on WinMo phones at this time, Google even has it as a known issue and has not been able to fix it

Why don't you just check your GMAIL through the Mail application included in the ROM? Or am I missing something?

How about including some links to the app to make this post? Please update the first post with the download link and findings to make this post more usable to all.
Thanks!

Going to http://gmail.com/app installs fine if you have Esmertec Java 20070802 installed. If you don't have this, you can search for CloudyFa esmertec jbed to download the cab.
*Edit* spoke too soon. Gives me an error message about this program requiring a data connection when trying to refresh or download mail. I'll play with it some more...

hello guys, i looked into this thread earlier and tried to get it to work on my device. esmertic java didn't work for me, so i got the IBM Java Virtual Machine, i installed that first then went to http:\\gmail.com\app and downloaded the app and now it works perfectly and the app is really great. you can dowload the IBM jvm from here (http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Emulators/IBM-MIDP-2-0-Java-Emulator-38910.shtml).

I think there's something wrong with the .jad file that we get from gmail.com/app. But you can get the actual jar file at http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar
Download it, transfer to sdcard and run it (install), make sure you have java installed... i'm using cloudyfa_esmertec_jbed... it work great...
i have v1.5 jar link, but eventually lost it... still searching through google.. or perhaps somebody could help...

That direct link is a good find. But, you're right, they are up to version 1.5 now. Would be great to find that link.
Here it is: http://gmail.com/app/v1.5.0/L1/gmail-g.jar
And here is an older version: http://gmail.com/app/v1.1.1/L1/gmail-g.jar

I received this email from IBM:
Thank you for your interest in the "Websphere Everyplace Micro Environment" (WEME), the IBM Java ME solution (NOT JavaSE). For small volumes business deployments and individual copies for personal use, the IBM Java ME virtual machine (WEME) may be purchased from our business partner, Handango for $25 USD. All of our Java runtimes that are available from Handango are Java ME certified and we provide solutions for various Java ME profiles and operating systems.
IBM no longer provides free evaluation or trial copies in the open on the IBM web site or IBM Direct Sales. It is only available under IBM SWG OEM Contracts.

HELP.
Att Tilt. I am too newbie to put all the threads together. If someone could walk me thru all the steps I need to take to get the gmail mobile app to work and also after its downloaded is there a way to shortcut it to the home/today screen. I've got the HTC homescreen and the other one. I found this link on the gmail help site:
http://groups.google.com/group/gmail-help-mobile/browse_thread/thread/93653260d4424e26/dfaf2289978e9159?lnk=gst&q=gmail+mobile+tilt#dfaf2289978e9159
How do I check if I have the right JAVA or not? Please senior members start from the beginning step by step. Thanks:confused:

No matter what I try, always get that $%#%^%^& "this program requires a data connection....." error.
O.k.-- for anyone not having issues, need some help here,
On ATT Tilt and network, running a custom cooked Alex 1.62 ROM with Esmertec JBed Build ID: 20070802.2.1
with the ATT Proxy enabled and with it disabled.
Anyone figure this out?
Need more than just a "installed and running fine" response.

This is how i did it.
Using Duttys 6.1
Installed Esmertec JBed Build ID: 20070802.2.1
Go to gmail.com, then at the top select get faster gmail.
This will take you to the latest build of the app. Agree and d/l.
After d/l select and hold to install, or open the midlet manager and select the jad file to install. after that the app will complie and be available in the midlet manager.
if you are using cube, then you can enter the advanced config edit and select your mail app to run the midlet manager with the argument -run s_0 if it is the first item in the list of the midlet manager ( first installed) if you add further java apps and want a shortcut to that as well, then it would be -run s_1 and so on.

If you are not familiar with the processes and locations of cooked roms, a great place to start would be the wiki,
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
and the forums for Kaiser
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
Here is a reference to Jbed.

Please take the time to do some research before asking a question like that.
We are here to help, if you are willing to help yourself.:)

Thank you for your help. I spend hours reading and rereading many posts, threads and wikis. Some people generously offer links right away - others like you answer rudely. I am learning. A few weeks ago I couldn't download a cab onto my tilt. Now I can and I can remap my PTT key and I've downloaded SPB software and the Kaiser home page and an upgrade to windows mobile and backed up my device. searching isn't so easy. There are many many threads to read thru - some 50-100 pages long. People tweak things they offer later in the thread. So please be patient with us newbies. And thank you for all the help we get.

Thank you for your help.
You are welcome!
Really, i was not trying to be rude, as i did offer links and was the second poster on the thread trying to help.
As for the noob statement. As you can see i have been here for a shorter period of time, and my kaiser is my first modded phone except my iphone.
Everything that i have learned about radios, roms, applications, cooking, has been in literally, the last few weeks. I had a ppc6700 with qwest for 2 years that my wife had that was stock from day 1!
So, if i offended you then i apologize, but it was just a reference to where i learned everything, I did not intend to be rude. If i offended you now, well then, you probably think everyone is out to get you! :)
Seriously, how far are you with the java and gmail app?
I have it running on dutty's 6.1, I love this rom.

and 1.64.06.04 radio.

JBed Build ID:20070802**(some people have issues with this one but try it)

Ahh,
That may be the issue, but since I cooked my own ROM, I didn't include the My ISP network settings. You wouldn't happen to have them for ATT?
(or if anyone has them, would appreciate it.)

why dont you just enable IMAP on your gmail settings and use IMAP w/ gmail in your messaging app that comes with winmo? that is what i do and i have no problems.
i used to have some weird email error where i just to just download headers but Gmail seams to have fixed this problem because i have not noticed it at all in a LONG time :)

Sounds like a great suggestion. But please clarify for me: Do you mean to simply set up Gmail as a mail account after it has had IMAP enabled?

I have the gmail java app running on my Tilt, but to get it running, each time I have to choose the Java apps, then choose the gmail app, then it goes through 2 permission screens (which don't seem to have a never bug me about it again option). Anyone know of a shorter way to have it just load up? I know VITO has a macro recorder, but that screws up my screen mapping.
___EDIT___
I read this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=258141) about shortcutting to midlets and this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-318771.html) about creating custom application launches on the htc today plugin. When I create the .lnk file according to the first thread, it just opens up the java manager (for me it shows as jbed.exe, I didn't see a jmm.exe). Any ideas? After I get the link working, if someone could point me in the right direction of adding the link as a quicklaunch item in the htc today plugin, that would be extra special nice of you.

The link below really explains the shortcuts and the permission things for Java (in this case for Opera Mini, but the same would pertain to GMail).

This whole Java stuff is for sure weird! I went to the gmail/app site to download the app just for fun. For some reason it would not download with my normal internet connection (I routinely use isp.cingular data connection).
However, when I went in to my connection settings and changed to wap.cingular I was able to download and install the GMail java app.
THEN - was unable to run the program (seemed to not make a connection) using either isp.cingular or the MediaNet wap.cingular connection !!
How weird
I use OperaMini ALL the time without problem!
If anyone can explain this it may help some of the lesser experienced users who seem to be lost

For the data connection problem you have to make sure youre connected to the internet through the my isp and not media net,
But isn't the PDA Personal plan for only MediaNet. From the way I understand it...the MyISP configuration is for only if you are doing tethering to a laptop or other device.
But in any case...I have tethering on my account and neither MediaNet nor MyISP work.
I was able to use the GMail Java application on my $150 Motorola SLVR...just don't understand why I can't use the same thing on my $500 phone.
